Abstract:Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) crystals have been predicted to have high electrochemical activity because nearly all active atoms are exposed to the electrolytes, which offers great potential for energy storage. However, to construct layered structure metal oxides, simplifying the synthetic methods and improving the electronic conductivity remain a challenge. Herein, we synthesized 2D vanadium doped manganese oxides through a facile hydrothermal method. Vanadium dopant is also used as a template agent for the formation of nanosheet-shaped MnO2, further leading to high specific surface area as well as significant enhancement of the electronic conductivity, as confirmed by the first-principle calculations and four-point probe method. For the sake of a shortened ion transport distance and enhanced electronic conductivity, V-doped MnO2 nanosheets display an excellent electrochemical performance as a supercapacitor electrode.
Influence of morphologies and pseudocapacitive contributions for charge storage in V 2 O 5 micro/nano-structures

Abstract:Three pure V2O5 micro/nano-structures including rods, hierarchical wires and porous tubes are synthesized via a chemical vapor deposition process by adjusting the oxidation temperature. Their surface-to-volume ratio increases significantly because of particle size decrease, pore quantity increase and hollow structure formation. Lithium-ion storage investigation in aqueous electrolyte indicates that the enlargement of surface area can suppress irreversible phase transition and lead to significant improvement of cycling stability, storage capacity and electrochemical kinetics. Furthermore, scan-rate dependence cyclic voltammetry analysis demonstrates that both pseudocapacitive and bulk Li+ storage are within these V2O5 electrodes and the relative contributions of them depend strongly on the scan rate. In porous V2O5 micro/nano-tubes, the surface pseudocapacitive storage dominates the total storage capacity at scan rates above 0.06 V s(-1), whereas the bulk Li+ storage is the domination effect for V2O5 micro/nano-rods at the scan rate ranging from 0.02 to 0.3 Vs(-1). At the special scan rate, the maximum and minimum capacity is observed in V2O5 porous micro/nano-tubes and micro/nano-rods, respectively. These studies should be useful for elucidating the morphological effects on Li-ion storage for V2O5-based electrodes. By varying key morphological parameters, the pseudocapacitive properties of V2O5 micro/nano-structure electrodes are expected to be affected. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In situ techniques to disclose electrochemical and interfacial behavior between electrode and electrolyte in a quantitative manner are in high demand in numerous fields including electrochromism, energy storage as well as basic science research. This work demonstrates a self-made in situ Raman spectra technique coordinating with an electrochemical workstation and its utility for zinc-induced structural dynamics and charge transfer of a layered V2O5. The increase or decrease of Raman activity modes of V-O3, O1-V-O2, and O1-V-O3 at low or high applied voltages is probably due to the presence of 'free pathway' within layers. An interpretation is proposed where the two stages of bidirectional reversibility of Zn2+ intercalation and deintercalation from 'free pathway' and V2O5 matrix occur via an electrochemical process, followed by Zn2+ continuous aggregation, fusion and possible transformation to ZnxV2O5. A distinct difference between Li+-based and Zn2+-based electrolytes is that the Raman active modes between V atom and apical oxygen are almost not enhanced or weakened for V2O5 in Zn2+-based electrolyte, most likely due to the greater Coulomb force of Zn2+ on V2O5 matrix than that of Li+. These observations have implications for understanding the performance and stability of electrochromic devices.

Abstract:Lithium was inserted electrochemically from au electrolyte into V2O5 thin films prepared by evaporation and posttreated at different temperatures in air so that LixV2O5 was obtained. Li+ storage properties, reversibiliy of Li+ intercalation/deintercalation in V2O5 thin films and influence of Li+ insertion on their optical properties were investigated. The experimental results show that two factors, the V5+ concentration and the sum total of sites in V2O5 thin films, control the capacity of Li+ insertion into V2O5 thin films, and that these thin films have a good Li+ storage characteristic, stability and reversibility.

Abstract:Li-rich layered oxides hold great promise for improving the energy density of present-day Li-ion batteries. Their application is, however, limited by the voltage decay upon cycling, and the origin of such a phenomenon is poorly understood. A major issue is determining the voltage range over which detrimental reactions originate. In the present study, a unique yet effective approach was employed to probe this issue. Instead of studying the materials during the first cycle, electrochemical behavior and evolution of the atomic structures were compared in extensively cycled specimens under varied charge/discharge voltages. With the upper cutoff voltage lowered from 4.8 to 4.4 V, the voltage decay ceased to occur even after 60 cycles. In the meantime, the material maintained its layered structure without any spinel phase emerging at the surface, which is unambiguously shown by the atomic-resolution Z-contrast imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy. These results have conclusively demonstrated that structural/chemical changes responsible for the voltage decay began between 4.4 and 4.8 V, where the layered-to-spinel transition was the most dramatic structural change observed. This discovery lays important groundwork for the mechanistic understanding of the voltage decay in Li-rich layered cathode materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal (TM) compound nanomaterials, due to their high-surface-area and large potential charge capability of TM atoms, have been widely investigated as electrochemical capacitors. However, the understanding of charge-storage mechanisms of 2D transition-metal compounds as electrode materials is still limited. In this study, using density functional theory computations, we systematically investigate the electrochemical properties of monolayer VS2 and V2C. Their electronic structures show a significant electron storage capability of around 0.25 V, referenced to the standard hydrogen electrode, and indicate redox pseudocapacitance characteristics as cathodes. The different charge densities visually confirm that excess electrons tend to localize in the vanadium atoms nearby contact-adsorbed Li ions, corresponding to the redox of vanadium atoms. In contrast, only the electric double layer acts as a charge-storage mechanism in the V2C monolayer. However, the O saturation would induce redox pseudocapacitance in the V2C monolayer. Furthermore, the calculated metallic behavior and low Li ion diffusion barriers substantiate that V2C and VS2 monolayers would manifest low resistance in the charging process. Our findings provide insights for the different charge-storage mechanism of VS2 and V2C monolayers.

Abstract:While manganese oxide (MnO2) has been extensively studied as an electrode material for pseudocapacitors, a clear understanding of its charge storage mechanism is still lacking. Here we report our findings in probing the structural changes of a thin-film model MnO2 electrode during cycling using in operando Raman spectroscopy. The spectral features (e.g., band position, intensity, and width) are correlated quantitatively with the size (Li+, Na+, and K+) of cations in different electrolytes and with the degree of discharge to gain better understanding of the cation-incorporation mechanism into the interlayers of pseudocapacitive MnO2. Also, theoretical calculations of phonon energy associated with the models of interlayer cation-incorporated MnO2 agree with the experimental observations of cation-size effect on the positions of Raman bands. Furthermore, the cation-size effects on spectral features at different potentials of MnO2 electrode are correlated quantitatively with the amount of charge stored in the MnO2 electrode. The understanding of the structural changes associated with charge storage gained from Raman spectroscopy provides valuable insights into the cation-size effects on the electrochemical performances of the MnO2 electrode.

Abstract:Layered H2Ti6O13‐nanowires are prepared using a facile hydrothermal method and their Li‐storage behavior is investigated in non‐aqueous electrolyte. The achieved results demonstrate the pseudocapacitive characteristic of Li‐storage in the layered H2Ti6O13‐nanowires, which is because of the typical nanosize and expanded interlayer space. The as‐prepared H2Ti6O13‐nanowires have a high capacitance of 828 F g−1 within the potential window from 2.0 to 1.0 V (vs. Li/Li+). An asymmetric supercapacitor with high energy density is developed successfully using H2Ti6O13‐nanowires as a negative electrode and ordered mesoporous carbon (CMK‐3) as a positive electrode in organic electrolyte. The asymmetric supercapacitor can be cycled reversibly in the voltage range of 1 to 3.5 V and exhibits maximum energy density of 90 Wh kg−1, which is calculated based on the mass of electrode active materials. This achieved energy density is much higher than previous reports. Additionally, H2Ti6O13//CMK‐3 asymmetric supercapacitor displays the highest average power density of 11 000 W kg−1. These results indicate that the H2Ti6O13//CMK‐3 asymmetric supercapacitor should be a promising device for fast energy storage.

Abstract:Manganese oxides of different structures, especially α-MnO2, have been extensively studied as electrodes for pseudocapacitors. However, the poor stability associated with intercalation of proton has been the main obstacle to their commercial applications. To effectively mitigate this problem, it is necessary to fully understand the energy storage mechanism of the MnO2 phases. In this study, δ phase MnO2 has been synthesized through controllable electroplating on architectural Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) bones, demonstrating a high specific capacitance of 1068Fg−1 and high stability (slight performance drop focus on the first 2000 cycles and then remained relatively constant in the subsequent 13,000 cycles). The charge storage mechanism of the δ-MnO2 coated GZO has been carefully investigated under this extreme reaction condition. Results suggest that the amount of charge stored in the electrode material correlates well with the amount of Na+ inserted into the electrode material from the electrolyte. It is also noted that no spectral features corresponding to H+ insertion were detected during cycling when the sample was probed using in operando Raman spectroscopy. Therefore, for layered δ-MnO2, a charge storage mechanism of Na+ intercalation/deintercalation dominated, accompanied by interlayer spacing expansion/contraction, was proposed. Moreover, theoretical calculations also confirmed that the insertion of Na+ is more energetically favorable than H+ at all sites of the interlayer in δ-MnO2, offering a rational explanation of the proposed mechanism and the observed excellent stability.

Abstract:For li ion batteries, the cathode materials are typically metal oxides or phosphates. Among the commonly-used cathode materials, V2O5 have been considered to be very promising cathode materials. However, the long-standing issues of low intrinsic electronic conductivity, slow lithium-ion diffusion and irreversible phase transitions on deep discharge prevent the high specific capacity/energy vanadium pentoxide from being used as the cathode material in practical battery applications. In this talk, our presentation will be centered on the study of V2O5 as the cathode materials for Li-ion batteries. Here we develop a method to incorporate graphene sheets into vanadium pentoxide nanoribbons via the sol–gel process. The resulting graphene-modified nanostructured vanadium pentoxide hybrids contain only 2 wt. % graphene, yet exhibits extraordinary electrochemical performance. Finally, the in-depth investigation of process-structure-property relationship in these hybrids-based Li-ion batteries has been studied using advanced in situ synchrotron techniques and existing tools.

Abstract:In order to act as extrinsic pseudocapacitor materials, nanoscale vanadium oxides are required to simultaneously exhibit a capacitance-based high power density and an intercalation-based high energy density. We have fabricated a three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) structure with a wall thickness of 14nm that fulfills the above requirements. The 3DOM vanadium oxide film exhibits high rate performance with 355Fg−1 at 0.5Ag−1 and 125Fg−1 at 15Ag−1. The enhanced pesudocapacitive effect and Li-ion diffusion coefficient based on the 3DOM nanostructure, also contributes to the high rate capability of vanadia, which can be confirmed by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry.

Abstract:2D N-doped V2O3 (N-V2O3) nanosheets were fabricated as anode materials for Li-ion batteries by a facile sol-gel method and a subsequent deoxidation-nitridation strategy. Benefiting from the 3D V-V tunnel structure, sufficient active sites and nitrogen modifications, N-V2O3 nanosheets exhibit improved Li+ diffusion kinetics, robust structure and enhanced conductivity. As a result, N-V2O3 nanosheets show a high specific capacity, long cycling life and high rate capability (136 mA h g(-1) even after 1000 cycles at 2 A g(-1)) as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. It is instructive to note that the efficient Li+ storage of N-V2O3 is dominated by intercalation pseudocapacitance. In the mechanism of intercalation pseudocapacitance, lithium ions are intercalated into the 3D V-V tunnels and adsorbed to the V-O active sites without crystalline phase transition. This mechanism combines long cycling life with short charging/discharging times, which is suitable for stable and ultrafast Li-ion storage.

Abstract:Cobalt vanadate (Co3V2O8, CVO) nanowires assembled by nanosheets are successfully synthesized using a two-step hydrothermal method. Annealing temperatures can alter the specific surface area of the CVO samples. The physicochemical and electrochemical properties of these CVO samples are systematically characterized and compared. Impressively, the as-prepared CVO exhibits a higher reversible specific capacity and better rate performance than other annealed CVO electrodes, including a specific capacity of 1810 mAh g–1 at 200 mA g–1 over 50 cycles. Density functional theory computations indicate that the binding energy of CVO decreases after adsorbing Li atoms, leading to a high pseudocapacitance contribution of the electrodes.

Abstract:Two-dimensional double transition metal carbides/nitride with unique out-of-plane arrangement of two metal atoms is emerging as a new pseudocapacitor material and attracting wide attention in the field of energy storage. Herein, fabrication of a novel 211-phase vanadium niobium carbide (VNbCTx) MXene by selectively etching the Al atomic layer from its VNbAlC MAX phase is reported for the first time. Effect of etching parameters on the microstructure, crystallinity, and electrochemical property of multilayer VNbCTx is examined. As the electrode material of lithium ion batteries, VNbCTx show a higher specific capacity of 520.5 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and promising cycle stability. This work provides additional understanding about the synthesis and storage perfor-mance of double transition metal MXene, which will benefit the development of novel double transition metal MXene for energy storage applications.

Abstract:In operando Raman spectroscopy has been used to monitor the phase changes of non-stoichiometric α-MnO2, α-Mn0.98O2, electrode materials in a pseudo-capacitor during the charging/discharging process. Results indicate that the α-Mn0.98O2 can be converted to MnO2 and Mn3O4 when placed in electrolyte exposed to laser for the Raman measurements. Both the phases contribute to the energy storage process through reversible phase transformation which involves hydrated cations M+, protons H+ and Mn2+ intercalation/deintercalation during the charging/discharging process.

An Orthogonal Investigation in Structures and Performances of Vanadium Modified Li2fesio4

Abstract:A series of different vanadium modified carbon coated lithium iron silicate (Li2Fe1-xVxSiO4/C) composites were prepared by sol-gel precursor and solid-state reaction using ammonium metavanadate (NH4VO3) as a vanadium source material. The effects of vanadium content, sucrose amount, sol-gel time and type of carboxylate acid on crystal structure, surface morphology, elemental composition and electrochemical performance of Li2Fe1-xVxSiO4/C composites were investigated through orthogonal design experiments. The initial discharge capacity of the nominal 35% vanadium modified Li2FeSiO4/C, prepared under the optimized conditions (sucrose amount of 80% and sol-gel time of 2 h using citric acid as a pH regulator), reached as high as 216.7 mAh/g (corresponding to 1.30 moles per formula unit) at 0.1C and room temperature. The composite exhibited a mixed Pmn2(1) and P2(1) phase with the coexistences of metallic iron (Fe) and lithium silicate (Li2SiO3) as the main impure phases.

Abstract:Layer-by-layer V2O5 structures self-assembly by quadrate sheets like "multilayer cake" were successfully synthesized using NH4VO3 as the vanadium sources by a facile hydrothermal route and combination of the calcination. The structure and composition were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer, X-ray powder diffraction, Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optical properties of the as-obtained V2O5 layer-by-layer structures were investigated by the Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectrum. The electrochemical properties of the as-obtained V2O5 layer-by-layer structures as electrodes in supercapacitor device were measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) both in the aqueous and organic electrolyte. The specific capacitance is 347 Fg(-1) at 1 A g(-1) in organic electrolyte, which is improved by 46% compared with 238 Fg(-1) in aqueous electrolyte. During the cycle performance, the specific capacitances of V2O5 layer-by-layer structures after 100 cycles are 30% and 82% of the initial discharge capacity in the aqueous and organic electrolyte, respectively, indicating the cycle performance is significantly improved in organic electrolyte. Our results turn out that layer-by-layer V2O5 structures are an ideal material for supercapacitor electrode in the present work. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
