Abstract:While manganese oxide (MnO2) has been extensively studied as an electrode material for pseudocapacitors, a clear understanding of its charge storage mechanism is still lacking. Here we report our findings in probing the structural changes of a thin-film model MnO2 electrode during cycling using in operando Raman spectroscopy. The spectral features (e.g., band position, intensity, and width) are correlated quantitatively with the size (Li+, Na+, and K+) of cations in different electrolytes and with the degree of discharge to gain better understanding of the cation-incorporation mechanism into the interlayers of pseudocapacitive MnO2. Also, theoretical calculations of phonon energy associated with the models of interlayer cation-incorporated MnO2 agree with the experimental observations of cation-size effect on the positions of Raman bands. Furthermore, the cation-size effects on spectral features at different potentials of MnO2 electrode are correlated quantitatively with the amount of charge stored in the MnO2 electrode. The understanding of the structural changes associated with charge storage gained from Raman spectroscopy provides valuable insights into the cation-size effects on the electrochemical performances of the MnO2 electrode.

Abstract:In operando Raman spectroscopy has been used to monitor the phase changes of non-stoichiometric α-MnO2, α-Mn0.98O2, electrode materials in a pseudo-capacitor during the charging/discharging process. Results indicate that the α-Mn0.98O2 can be converted to MnO2 and Mn3O4 when placed in electrolyte exposed to laser for the Raman measurements. Both the phases contribute to the energy storage process through reversible phase transformation which involves hydrated cations M+, protons H+ and Mn2+ intercalation/deintercalation during the charging/discharging process.

Abstract:Manganese oxides of different structures, especially α-MnO2, have been extensively studied as electrodes for pseudocapacitors. However, the poor stability associated with intercalation of proton has been the main obstacle to their commercial applications. To effectively mitigate this problem, it is necessary to fully understand the energy storage mechanism of the MnO2 phases. In this study, δ phase MnO2 has been synthesized through controllable electroplating on architectural Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) bones, demonstrating a high specific capacitance of 1068Fg−1 and high stability (slight performance drop focus on the first 2000 cycles and then remained relatively constant in the subsequent 13,000 cycles). The charge storage mechanism of the δ-MnO2 coated GZO has been carefully investigated under this extreme reaction condition. Results suggest that the amount of charge stored in the electrode material correlates well with the amount of Na+ inserted into the electrode material from the electrolyte. It is also noted that no spectral features corresponding to H+ insertion were detected during cycling when the sample was probed using in operando Raman spectroscopy. Therefore, for layered δ-MnO2, a charge storage mechanism of Na+ intercalation/deintercalation dominated, accompanied by interlayer spacing expansion/contraction, was proposed. Moreover, theoretical calculations also confirmed that the insertion of Na+ is more energetically favorable than H+ at all sites of the interlayer in δ-MnO2, offering a rational explanation of the proposed mechanism and the observed excellent stability.

Abstract:A manganese dioxide (MnO2) film is electrodeposited onto a gold-coated quartz crystal electrode by a galvanostatic method. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image shows that the electrodeposited MnO2 film consists of nanorods with diameters of 15–20 nm. The cyclic voltammetric (CV) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) results demonstrate that the MnO2 electrodes exhibit similar specific capacitance (SC) and mass-to-charge ratios (MCR) in those electrolytes that contain the same cation but different anions. However, the SC and MCR are different in those electrolytes that contain the same anion but different cations. The SC of MnO2 electrodes increases with a decrease of the cationic radius and an increase of the cationic charge. The smaller the cationic radius, the smaller the deviation of the MCR from the equivalent weight (EW) of the cation. The results illustrate that the pseudocapacitive charge storage mechanism of MnO2 involves the cation in the electrolyte and its intercalation/deintercalation, which are affected by the charge number and the cationic radius. This work offers a theoretical basis for selecting suitable electrolytes to couple MnO2-based electrodes in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Pseudocapacitors, which can store more energy at high charge/discharge rates, have attracted considerable attention. The performance of a pseudocapacitive material mainly depends on the interaction between electrode materials and the electrolyte ions. However, the understanding of the interaction is still limited. Here, the performance of Ti2CT2 (T = O, F, and OH) nanosheets as pseudocapacitor electrode materials has been investigated through a novel first-principles approach. The results suggest that O-terminated Ti2C nanosheets are shown to be pseudocapacitive cathode materials. The pseudocapacitance is attributed to the large intrinsic capacitance of Ti2CO2 nanosheets and contact adsorbed cations. The former mainly decides the capacity of charges and the latter reduces the change of potential in the electrode. The integral capacitance and Na-ion capacity of Ti2CO2 nanosheets are simulated to be 291.5 F g(-1) with a broad potential window range from 0 to 2.80 V (versus Na/Na+). Low diffusion energy barriers on Ti2CO2 and Ti2CF2 nanosheets indicate fast transportation and high charge and discharge rate for Na-ions. Our results provide insight into the origin of pseudocapacitance on stacked two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:This work presents the quantitative analysis of different mechanistic contribution to charge storage process of Fe3O4 in Li2SO4 aqueous electrolyte using nanorod film electrode as the ideal platform. “Capacity (stored charge)-charging time” relationship and “current-sweep rate” power law relationship, etc. are investigated. In addition to capacitive charge storage process, diffusion-controlled process is also found to occur in Fe3O4 nanorod film. This diffusion-controlled contribution dominates at low rates (78.4% at 0.5mVs−1) and cannot be ignored even at relatively high rates (22.8% at 100mVs−1). Our finding clearly uncovers that nanostructured Fe3O4 stores charges not merely on the surface/near-surface like typical pseudocapacitive materials, but rather through the intercalation of Li+ in the bulk.

Abstract:Raman spectra of isolated single particles of technical grade LiMn2O4 (mean diam ca. 10 mu m) embedded in Au foils were recorded in situ in 1 M LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate (2:1 w/w) solutions using a Raman microscope. Data collected under steady state as a function of applied potential were in excellent agreement with those reported for the material using other approaches. In addition, the rather high signal to noise ratios made it possible, for the first time, to monitor in real time the spectral properties of individual particles under transient conditions during a voltammetric scan. Extensions of this novel in situ measurement strategy are expected to allow the electrical state of particles incorporated into electrodes in battery-type environments to be determined spectroscopically both with temporal and spatial resolution, enabling in certain instances direct comparisons to be made with predictions based on theoretical modeling. Abstract:Manganese oxides are promising pseudocapacitve materials for achieving both high power and energy densities in pseudo capacitors. However, it remains a great challenge to develop MnO2-based high-performance electrodes due to their low electrical conductance and poor stability. Here we show that MnO2 nanowires anchored on electrochemically modified graphite foil (EMGF) have a high areal capacitance of 167 mF cm(-2) at a discharge current density of 0.2 mA cm(-2) and a high capacitance retention after 5000 charge/discharge cycles (115%), which are among the best values reported for any MnO2-based hybrid structures. The EMGF support can also be recycled and the newly deposited MnO2-based hybrids retain similarly high performance. These results demonstrate the successful preparation of pseudocapacitors with high capacity and cycling stability, which may open a new opportunity towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly method of utilizing electrochemical energy storage devices.

Abstract:Molybdenum nitride-based materials have been extensively investigated as pseudocapacitive materials due to their superior metallic conductivity and thermal stability. Nevertheless, few studies have focused on the origin of pseudocapacitance ( Credox ) differences for charged molybdenum nitride electrodes with different crystal structures. Herein, taking cubic Mo 2 N (NaCl-type), Mo 3 N 2 (CsCl-type) and hexagonal MoN (AlB 2 -type) as the research targets, we have systematically investigated the differences in rate performance and capacitance of these three materials by experimental methods and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to obtain the origin of Credox differences among them. DFT calculations prove that the proportions of Credox are 86.45%, 85.32% and 84.57% for Mo 2 N, Mo 3 N 2 and MoN and thus the Mo 2 N features the most obvious pseudocapacitive behavior. Furthermore, the rigid band approximation (RBA) method reveals that the differences of work function change ( ΔWF ) are the root cause of Credox differences for these three kinds of charged materials. The highest electrochemical capacitance retention, highest conductivity, and fastest K + ion mobility indicate that the MoN possesses the best rate performance among these three materials. Additionally, the most intact nanowire morphology and smallest ΔWF of Mo 2 N enable it to possess the highest electrochemical capacitance and theoretical total capacitance ( Ctotal ). The above findings will shed light on examining capacitance in a charged environment while screening the next-generation high-performance pseudocapacitive materials under various crystal structures.

Abstract:A novel non-destructive methodology for operando observation of ion intercalation and the state of charge on battery electrodes is presented based on spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). The potentiality of this technique for performing time-resolved measurements of (de-)lithiation processes on electrode materials has been demonstrated using thin film spinel LiMn$_2$O$_4$ as a cathode for Li-ion batteries. The chemical diffusivity of Li+ ions in this material has been determined by the time evolution of the Li insertion into the film, and in the light of these results, it has been possible to relate the controversial pseudo-capacitive behavior observed in this material to the nanostructure of the layer. The results presented here establish a new way for operando characterization of battery materials and devices providing a powerful tool for the understanding of ion diffusion mechanisms in a collection of electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Electrochemistry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of MnO2/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were made to evaluate capacitive performance and electronic structure as a supercapacitor. MnO2 was deposited on the surface of RGO by a spontaneous redox reaction. At low current density (1 A g-1), the specific capacitance of MnO2/RGO (MRGO) greatly increased with increasing growth time from 281 to 462 F g−1. Electrochemical results show that the specific capacitance of RGO and MRGO arises from the combined contributions of electrochemical double-layer capacitance (EDLC) and pseudo-capacitance. To gain insights into the charge storage mechanism of RGO and MRGO, it was characterized using ex-situ soft XAS techniques at Mn L-edge and C, O K-edges in the charging/discharging process. The ex-situ soft XAS results provide evidence that the contribution of RGO to specific capacitance involves an oxygen-functionality-related contribution of pseudocapacitance and EDLC. In addition, the specific capacitance of MRGO reveals pseudocapacitive contributions from the redox processes that involve the Mn(III)/Mn(IV) redox reaction in MnO2. This work utilizes electrochemical and ex-situ XAS techniques to elucidate charge storage mechanism for supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:The intrinsically poor electrical conductivity of transition metal oxides is a critical challenge to obtain high electrochemical performance when these materials are used as the electrode of supercapacitors. In this study, the pseudo-capacitance features of perovskite (La0.75Sr0.25)(0.95)MnO3-delta (LSM) having a high electric conductivity of 44.9 S cm(-1) at room temperature was preliminarily investigated. The easily prepared LSM electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge method to evaluate its electrochemical performances. The results show that LSM has pseudo-capacitance features and the specific capacitance is 56 F g(-1) at a scanning rate of 2 mV s(-1). This is the first report on the pseudo-capacitance value of LSM. Furthermore, the electrodes show no obvious capacitance degradation after 1000 cycles.

Abstract:Linking surface structure evolution to the capacity fading of cathode materials has been a problem in lithium ion batteries. Most of the strategies used to solve this problem are focused on the differences between the unaged and aged materials, leading to the loss of intermediate dynamic change information during cycling. Raman spectroscopy is a convenient, nondestructive, and highly sensitive tool for characterizing the surface/near-surface region structure. In this work, we improved an operando Raman system, which is able to record in situ and in real time a series of Raman spectra during charging/discharging cycles and is even able to record very weak Raman peaks without the use of SRES enhancement, which facilitates sample preparation. These series of Raman spectra revealed an inherent correlation between the electrode potential/Li content and the surface structure changes of the as-prepared pure LiMn2O4 film, including the biphase reaction, the evolution of the peroxo O-O bond, and the formation of the Mn3O4 surface phase. They were the first to show that the number of peroxo O-O bonds was decreased with an increasing number of cycles and that this decrease was accompanied by an increase in the Mn3O4 phase. With the help of the data measured by XPS, c-AFM, electrochemical testing equipment, and the calculation based on density functional theory, the causes of the capacity fading of the material are discussed. This work not only showed a direct correlation between the surface structure evolution and the capacity fading of the LiMn2O4 but also could provide an alternative operando Raman system that could be widely used for the in situ characterization of battery electrode materials.
Laser Thermal Shock Enabling Ultrafast Spin Regulation of MnO2 for Robust Pseudocapacitive Energy Storage

Abstract:A laser thermal shock technology is applied to regulate the spin state of MnO2, contributing to a largely increased pseudocapacitive performance even at commercial mass loading. The pseudocapacitive performance of MnO2 is intrinsically determined by its electronic structure, especially the spin state. However, the correlation between the electrochemical behavior and the spin state of electrode materials remains ill‐defined, and efficient spin regulation strategies for MnO2 are thus lacking. Herein, the study reports laser thermal shock of electrochemically deposited MnO2 for efficient spin regulation. The combined use of theoretical calculation and experimental investigation indicates that the thermal shock induces oxygen vacancy in MnO2 to reduce spin polarization and delocalize electron distribution. As a result, the electrical conductivity largely increases and the Na+ adsorption is reasonably optimized. By lasering an integrated electrode for only 83 s, a 54% increase of the specific capacitance is observed. For the first time, the pseudocapacitive capability of MnO2 is revealed by in situ electron paramagnetic resonance where the enhanced redox pair is correlated with evolution of Mn2+ during charge/discharge. Moreover, the commercial‐level mass‐loaded electrode also offers a decent performance enhancement after laser treatment, indicating the great prospect of this technology for real applications. This work innovatively correlates the pseudocapacitive performance of MnO2 with its spin state and offers a new avenue to optimize the electrochemical capability through spin regulation.

Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the Effect of Oxygen Vacancies on the Electronic Structure and Pseudocapacitance of MnO2.

Abstract:Defect engineering is an effective way to modulate the intrinsic physicochemical properties of materials. In this work, delta-MnO2 with oxygen vacancies is fabricated by a simple oxidation or reduction process, and the relationship between the electronic structure and pseudocapacitance is systematically studied through experimental analysis and theoretical calculations. The peaks in the Raman spectra of the as-prepared samples are shifted compared with those of pure MnO2 and the Mn3+/Mn4+ ratio and O species content also change after the introduction of oxygen vacancies. The optimized samples exhibit a better specific capacitance of 207 F g(-1) after the oxidation process and 181.4 F g(-1) after the reduction treatment compared with only 143.9 F g(-1) for the pure MnO2. The samples obtained through the oxidation or reduction process also retain 93.3 or 86.4 % of the initial capacity after 5000 cycles. The excellent properties are attributed to the enhanced conductivity and increased surface reactivity or electrochemically active sites. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the presence of oxygen vacancies leads to an increase in the density of states, which improves the redox reaction of MnO2. This study will provide a reference for exploring and designing highperformance pseudocapacitive materials.
Enhanced Pseudocapacitive Performance of Α-Mno2 by Cation Preinsertion.

Abstract:Although the theoretical capacitance of MnO2 is 1370 F g-1 based on the Mn3+/Mn4+ redox couple, most of the reported capacitances in literature are far below the theoretical value even when the material goes to nanoscale. To understand this discrepancy, in this work, the electrochemical behavior and charge storage mechanism of K+-inserted α-MnO2 (or KxMnO2) nanorod arrays in broad potential windows are investigated. It is found that electrochemical behavior of KxMnO2 is highly dependent on the potential window. During cyclic voltammetry cycling in a broad potential window, K+ ions can be replaced by Na+ ions, which determines the pseudocapacitance of the electrode. The K+ or Na+ ions cannot be fully extracted when the upper cutoff potential is less than 1 V vs Ag/AgCl, which retards the release of full capacitance. As the cyclic voltammetry potential window is extended to 0-1.2 V, enhanced specific capacitance can be obtained with the emerging of new redox peaks. In contrast, the K+-free α-MnO2 nanorod arrays show no redox peaks in the same potential window together with much lower specific capacitance. This work provides new insights on understanding the charge storage mechanism of MnO2 and new strategy to further improve the specific capacitance of MnO2-based electrodes.

Understanding how charge is efficiently stored in the electrodes or across the electrolyte/electrode interface is key to developing advanced SC electrodes. Scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM) studies 2 have been used to investigate MnO 2 based supercapacitor electrodes using a novel three-electrode based in-situ flow electrochemical device ( Fig. 1 ) 3, 4 . Near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of MnO 2 films in-situ deposited and subjected to several different electrochemical processes were measured with high spatial resolution at the Mn L 3 and O K edges ( Fig. 2 ) at both working electrode (WE) and counter electrode (CE) regions. In this work, the redox state changes associated with pseudocapacitance during charging/discharging processes in a potential window of -0.5 V Au to +0.9 V Au (+0.1 V RHE to +1.5 V RHE ) have been investigated. The spectroscopic data and quantitative chemical mapping by in-situ STXM measurements demonstrated that an as-electrodeposited MnO 2 film was reduced to both Mn 3+ and Mn 2+ oxidation states through a reversable Mn 4+ ↔ Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ redox reaction. A significant change from a quasi-uniform MnO 2 film to a dendritc MnO 2 structure was observed during discharging at +1.5 V RHE ( Fig. 3, Fig. 4 ) corresponding to redeposition of Mn 2+ dissolved into electrolyte during the reduction process 5 . I n-situ STXM measurements at the CE showed there is deposition of MnO 2 during the reduction reaction (charging process) at +0.1 V RHE . Mn L 3 features of Mn 2+ appeared in the electrolyte region during the reduction process and disappeared during the oxidation process, confirming the dissolution/redeposition mechanism. Abstract:In this paper, a multiple potential step chronoamperometry (MUSCA) technique is used to analyze the electrochemical behavior of pseudocapacitive Ti3C2Tx MXene material. MUSCA allows for reconstruction of cyclic voltammograms with considerably lower ohmic drop contribution. As such, the voltammogram current responses from the surface and bulk processes can be precisely deconvoluted at any given potentials, especially at high scan rates. An electrochemical kinetic analysis of the Ti3C2Tx electrode using the calculated voltammograms showed that the surface process dominates at higher scan rate while the bulk process takes over at the low scan rate in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. By minimizing the ohmic drops, the MUSCA method is presented to be a useful tool to study the natural electrochemical behavior of pseudocapacitive electrodes and to help designing better energy storage systems.
