Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.
Synthesis of Ag / AgCl / TiO 2 Composite Plasmonic Photocatalyst

Abstract:Mesoporous TiO2 frameworks were synthesized by the sol-gel combined with evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) methods using F127 as the templating agent. Based on the obtained mesoporous TiO2, Ag/AgCl/mosoporous TiO2 composites were synthesized by the method of depositing AgCl and then reducing partial Ag ions to Ag under mercury lamp irradiation. SEM、XRD were used to characterize the composites, and the efficiency of photodegradating methyl orange (MO) is also investigated. The results reveal the prepared TiO2 frameworks are composed of well crystallized anatase, and AgCl can be identified as chlorargyrite. The incorporation of Ag and AgCl has not destroyed the mesoporous TiO2 frameworks. Compared with pure mesoporous TiO2, the photodegradation efficiency of the composites is almost doubled. The increase of photodegradation efficiency is attributed to surface plasmon resonance absorption of Ag.

Abstract:A novel mesoporous-structured photocatalyst MoO3/TiO2 was synthesized through a modified sol gel method by using P123 as the template, and the resulting nano-photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption measurements, transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, XPS and Raman techniques. Low-angle XRD and TEM images show the lack of long-range order in the as-prepared MoO3/TiO2, but the Mo species are homogenously dispersed on the anatase matrix. According to the results of N-2 ads-desorption, the calcined products possess the high surface area and the pore size distribution centered between 4-7 nm. The calcined meso-MoO3/TiO2 materials exhibit the high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of MB (methylene blue) under visible light radiation.

Abstract:Uniform and monodispersed TiO2 nanocrystals-assembled leaves-like nanosheets (TLNs) have been synthesized via a novel and direct hydrothermal method, i.e. a controlled hydrolysis of tetrabutyltitanate (TBOT) in ethanol without adding any surfactant reagents. The physical and chemical properties of TLNs were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra and BET surface area measurement. The photoelectrochemical performance of TLNs was characterized through photocurrent and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement. The photocatalytic activity of the TLNs was evaluated by photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) aqueous solution under simulated solar irradiation. The experimental results showed that the TLNs exhibited a much better photocatalytic activity than that of pure TiO2 (PT) and commercial TiO2 (P25).

Abstract:Single-crystal-like TiO2 mesoporous microspheres have been reported with high photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet light (UV light) because of their high specific surface areas and single-crystal-like channel walls. In this work, plasmonic gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and beta-NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+ upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were composited with single-crystal-like TiO2 mesoporous microspheres through a series of facile approaches, aiming at broadening response region of solar light from UV to visible and near infrared light and enhancing the photocatalytic activity further. The structure was rationally designed by modifying the pore size of TiO2 mesoporous microspheres so as to anchor plasmonic Au NPs, and covering beta-NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+ with SiO2 in order to embed UCNPs into TiO2 mesoporous microspheres via hydrophilic interaction. This work studied the attribution of Au NPs and UCNPs to photocatalysis and found out that combining Au NPs and certain amount of UCNPs with single-crystal-like TiO2 mesoporous microspheres in a monolithic architecture would bring enhanced broadband photocatalytic activity under simulated solar light. Consequently, the composite photocatalyts containing 150 mg UCNPs showed a significant enhancement in reaction rate, which was 36.02% higher than commercial P25 and 85.09% higher than pure TiO2 mesoporous microspheres under simulated solar light.

However, modifying with sole noble metal is often limited as it tunes wavelength of only several nanometers. To overcome this drawback, an alternative approach can be offered by decoration with more than one noble metal. For instance, Au-Ag co-decoration displays greatly adjustable, composition-dependent SPR agent over a broad range of the visible light spectrum (ca. from 415 to 525 nm). Hence Au-Ag complex is a remarkable candidate for tuning the photo adsorption of TiO2 from UV to visible light. This study presents a novel and tailored method for the fabrication of Au-Ag co-modified TiO2 particles, and how Au-Ag dependent SPR was applied as the visible light-responsive TiO2 based photocatalysts in a simple but reliable way. The fabricated Au-Ag co-decorated TiO2 (AuxAg(1−x)/TiO2) was characterized and proved to own excellent stability and large specific surface area. The optimization of these particles against the wavelength of maximal solar light intensity was confirmed by photo degradation of methylene blue under visible light radiation. This work may provide further insight into the design of TiO2-based composites with improved photocatalytic properties for environmental remediation and renewable energy utilization.
Controllable One-Pot Synthesis and Enhanced Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity of Tunable C−Cl-Codoped TiO2Nanocrystals with High Surface Area

Abstract:We demonstrate the controlled synthesis of C-Cl-codoped anatase TiO2, nanocrystals by hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) in chloroform containing trace amounts of water at a low temperature of 150 degrees C without subsequent thermal procedure. The C and Cl dopants resulted from the solvothermal decomposition of chloroform induced by water, and the adjusting of molar ratios of water to TTIP was able to tune the crystal sizes and the concentration of the dopants. The as-prepared powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), nitrogen adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). All the C-Cl-codoped TiO2 possessed mesoporous Structure and high Surface areas between 158.1 and 469.6 m(2)/g. The photocatalytic activities of the resulting C-Cl-codoped TiO2 nanocrystals were evaluated by the photodegradation of RhB Under visible light irradiation. The sample synthesized with it molar ratio of water to TTIP equal to 2 exhibited the highest photoactivity among all the synthesized C-Cl-codoped TiO2. Its activity was even much higher than that of the C-TiO2 and Cl-TiO2 reported in our previous work. The enhanced visible light photocatalyitc activity of that C-Cl-codoped TiO2 nanocrystal Could be primarily attributed to the large surface area and the synergetic effect of the codoping.

Abstract:Nanocomposites of Ag/TiO(2) nanowires with enhanced photoelectrochemical performance have been prepared by a facile solvothermal synthesis of TiO(2) nanowires and subsequent photoreduction of Ag(+) ions to Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the TiO(2) nanowires. The as-prepared nanocomposites exhibited significantly improved cathodic photocurrent responses under visible-light illumination, which is attributed to the local electric field enhancement of plasmon resonance effect near the TiO(2) surface rather than by the direct transfer of charge between the two materials. The visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance of these nanocomposites in the degradation of methylene blue dye was also studied, and the observed improvement in photocatalytic activity is associated with the extended light absorption range and efficient charge separation due to surface plasmon resonance effect of AgNPs.

Abstract:Plasmonic noble metal nanoparticles have emerged as a promising material in sensitizing wide-bandgap semiconductors for visible-light photocatalysis. Conventional methods in constructing such heterocatalysts suffer from either poor control over the size of the metal nanoparticles or inefficient charge transfer through the metal/semiconductor interface, which limit their photocatalytic activity. To solve this problem, in this work we construct Au/TiO2 photocatalysts by depositing presynthesized colloidal Au nanoparticles with well-controlled sizes to TiO2 nanocrystals and then removing capping ligands on the Au surface through a delicately designed ligand-exchange method, which leads to close Au/TiO2 Schottky contact after a mild annealing process. Benefiting from this unique synthesis strategy, the obtained photocatalysts show superior activity to conventionally prepared photocatalysts in dye decomposition and water-reduction hydrogen production under visible-light illumination. This study not only opens up new opportunities in designing photoactive materials with high stability and enhanced performance for solar energy conversion but also provides a potential solution for the well-recognized challenge in cleaning capping ligands from the surface of colloidal catalyst nanoparticles.
Enhanced Photocatalytic Water Splitting of TiO2 by Decorating with Facet-Controlled Au Nanocrystals

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) has drawn much interest in photocatalysis due to the advantages in extending light-absorption and improving charge-separation efficiency. In this work, Au nanocubes with exposed {100} facets and Au nanotrioctahedrons with exposed {221} facets are synthesized via the seed-growth method with the aim of demonstrating the photocatalytic performance under the LSPR effect using a typical TiO2 photocatalyst. The modification of Au nanocrystals results in accelerated charge separation in the TiO2 photocatalyst, which is attributed to the synergetic effect of local electromagnetic field enhancement from the LSPR effect and the Schottky junction established in Au and TiO2. Consequently, the photocatalytic hydrogen-production from the TiO2 photocatalyst is greatly improved. Moreover, Au nanotrioctahedrons modified TiO2 exhibits superior photocatalytic performance due to the stronger local electromagnetic field of the LSPR and the more efficient electron trapping originated from the unique morphology with exposed {221} facets.
Facile hydrothermal synthesis of plasmonic photocatalyst Ag@AgCl and degradative photocatalysis under visible light irradiation

Abstract:We put forward a new approach for the synthesis of Ag@AgCl plasmonic photocatalyst via a hydrothermal-deposition-photoreduction method. The cetylmethylammonium chloride (CTAC) was used alone as both a source of reactants and surfactant. The structure of the prepared photocatalyst was determined by XRD, SEM, EDX and UV-Vis spectroscoscopy. The photocatalytic properties were investigated by degradation of an organic pollutant, Rhodamine B, under visible light irradiation. The results reveal that the experimental conditions have a great effect on the morphology of Ag@AgCl crystals. Ag@AgCl crystal is cubic and the Ag@AgCl sample which is photoreduced for 40 min exhibits the highest photoactivity, and 80.6 % RhB is degraded after irradiation for 2 hours using this catalyst. The high photocatalytic activity observed is attributed to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag nanoparticles.

Abstract:Recently, localized surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely used to construct plasmonic nanohybrids for heterogeneous photocatalysis. For example, the combination of plasmonic Au NPs and TiO2 provides pure TiO2 visible-light activity. The SPR effect induces an electric field and consequently enhances light scattering and absorption, favoring the transfer of photon energy to hot carriers for catalytic reactions. Numerous approaches have been dedicated to the improvement of SPR absorption in photocatalysts. Here, we have designed a core@shell-satellite nanohybrid catalyst whereby an Ag NP core, as a plasmonic resonator featuring unique dual functions of strong scattering and near-field enhancement, is encapsulated by SiO2 and TiO2 layers in sequence, with Au NPs on the outer surface, Ag@SiO2@TiO2-Au, for efficient plasmonic photocatalysis. By varying the size and number of Ag NP cores, the Au SPR can be tailored over the visible and near-infrared spectral region to reabsorb the scattered photons. In the presence of the Ag core, the incident light is efficiently confined in the reaction suspension by undergoing multiple scattering, thus leading to an increase of the optical path to the photocatalysis. Moreover, using numerical analysis and experimental verifications, we demonstrate that the Ag core also induces a strong near-field enhancement at the Au-TiO2 interface via SPR coupling with Au. Consequently, the activity of the TiO2-Au plasmonic photocatalyst is significantly enhanced, resulting in a high H2 production rate under visible light. Thus, the design of a single structural unit with strong scattering and field enhancement, induced by a plasmonic resonator, is a highly effective strategy to boost photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:A ternary Ag/AgCl/Bi2MoO6 plasmonic photocatalyst was successfully fabricated through a two-step synthesis method. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The DRS results showed that the visible light absorption of the Ag/AgCl/ Bi2MoO6 composite had been greatly enhanced owing to the surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) of Ag-0 particles. The SEM and TEM images showed that the obtained flower-like Bi2MoO6 microspheres were composed of nanoplates, on the surface of which Ag/AgCl particles were distributed. In the photocatalytic degradation of dyes, Ag/AgCl/Bi2MoO6 photocatalysts exhibited significantly enhanced activities compared with Bi2MoO6. It was also found that the components of Ag/AgCl/Bi2MoO6 have a great influence on the activity. Controlled experiments proved that the degradation of pollutants over Ag/AgCl/Bi2MoO6 was mainly ascribed to the strong oxidation ability of photo-generated holes. On the basis of band structure analysis and active species trapping experimental results, a photocatalytic mechanism is also proposed.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a novel method to enhance TiO₂ photocatalysis by adopting a new ultrathin tetrahedral-amorphous-carbon (ta-C) film coating on Ag nanoparticles to create strong plasmonic near-field enhancement. The result shows that the decomposition rate of methylene blue on the Ag/10 Å ta-C/TiO₂ composite photocatalyst is ten times faster than that on a TiO₂ photocatalyst and three times faster than that on a Ag/TiO₂ photocatalyst. This can be ascribed to the simultaneous realization of two competitive processes: one that excites the surface plasmons (SPs) of the ta-C-film/Ag-nanoparticle hybrid and provides a higher electric field near the ta-C/TiO₂ interface compared to Ag nanoparticles alone, while the other takes advantage of the dense diamond-like ta-C layer to help reduce the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the conduction band of TiO₂ to the metallic surface, since any electron transfer will suppress the excitation of SP modes in the metal nanoparticles.
One-pot Solvothermal Synthesis of 1D Plasmonic TiO2@Ag Nanorods with Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:A plasmonic photocatalyst is designed and synthesized by coating TiO2 nanoparticles onto the surface of Ag nanorods (Ag NRs), namely one-dimensional TiO2@Ag NRs photocatalyst. Materials characterizations suggest that the as-prepared catalysts consist of a uniform and high crystalline anatase nanocrystals and highly conductive Ag nanorod. It delivers remarkable visible-light photocatalytic performance in simultaneous H2 evolution and decomposition of methyl orange (MO) due to the synergetic effects of plasmonic resonance under visible light irradiation, a matched heterojunction, high surface area and large conductivity.

Abstract:Hybrid plasmonic nanostructures consisting of Ag nanoparticles decorated TiO2 nanorods with highly enhanced photocatalytic activity were synthesized by a facile wet chemical method. The structural, optical, plasmonic and photocatalytic properties of the synthesized Ag-TiO2 hybrid nanostructures were well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of the as-synthesized Ag-TiO2 hybrid nanostructures were evaluated by studying sun light-driven photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes in water. The results showed that Ag-TiO2 hybrid nanostructures exhibit highly enhanced photocatalytic activity towards degradation of MB and MO dyes and the photocatalytic efficiency increased with increase in Ag nanoparticle loading. The mechanism underlying the highly enhanced photocatalytic activity of Ag-TiO2 nanohybrids is proposed. We attribute the observed enhanced photocatalytic activity of Ag-TiO2 hybrid nanostructures to the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers in TiO2 due to the electron scavenging action of Ag nanoparticles and the improved sun light utilization by the plasmonic nanohybrids originating from the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption of Ag nanoparticles.
