Abstract:Various kinds of social networks develop explosively, such as online social networks, scientific cooperation networks, athlete networks, airport passage networks, and so on. With the large number of participants and real-time property, social networks increasingly demonstrate their strength in information dissemination. Social computing has become a promising research area and attracts lots of attention. Analyzing and mining human behaviors, topological structure, and information diffusion in social networks can help to understand the essential mechanism of macroscopic phenomena, discover potential public interest, and provide early warnings of collective emergencies.

Abstract:Big Data is defined as an emerging paradigm that includes complex and large-scale information beyond the processing capability of conventional tools. Traditional data analytics methods have been commonly used for many applications, such as text classfication, image recognition, and video tracking. For analysis purposes, these data often need to be represented as vectors. However, many other types of data objects in real-world applications contain rich feature vectors and structure information, such as chemical com pounds in bio-pharmacy, brain regions in brain networks and users in social networks. Unfortunately, vector representa tions are very simple features that do not inherently contain the object’s structure information. In reality, objectsmay have complicated characteristics depending on how the objects are assessed and characterized. Data may also reside in het erogeneous domains, such as traditional tabular-based data, sequential patterns, social networks, time series information, and semi-structured data. As a result, novel data analytics methods are needed to discover meaningful knowledge in advanced applications from objects with large-scale com plex characteristics. In total, there were 104 submissions to this IEEE ACCESS Special Section, with 39 accepted after rigorous peer review.

Abstract:CYBER-PHYSICAL system is a system of collaborating computational elements to control physical entities. The coordination and the tight link between computational, virtual and physical resources in cyber-physical system will have a pervasive effect on our everyday life. The development of cyber-physical system will create new opportunities for the introduction of services that will enhance the quality of life of the society as a whole. Research advances in cyber-physical systems promise to transform our world with systems that will far exceed those of today in terms of: effectiveness, adaptability, autonomicity, energy efficiency, precision, reliability, safety, usability, scalability, stability and user-centric applicability. Moreover, recently the sensor web concept came into foreground, aiming at combining distributed sensing with the ubiquitous connectivity and accessibility of the web, therefore facilitating the close interaction of digital world with physical world. The technical challenges of cyber-physical systems are significant, and of high research and practical importance, mainly stemming from the fact that traditionally different groups of scientists deal with this setting without much interaction, using disjoint sets of techniques. Towards merging the cyber and physical world, well-defined analytical models, methodologies and experimental validations are required in order to build systems capable of orchestrating heterogeneous components together in a flexible and efficient way. The control systems community has been consistently engaged in the development of theories, tools, and practices for the analysis and the design of cyber-physical systems. The aim of this special issue is to provide a window into the recent developments of the fundamentals and applications of control of cyber-physical systems.

Abstract:CyberGIS is an interdisciplinary field combining advanced cyberinfrastructure, geographic information science and systems (GIS), spatial analysis and modeling, and a number of geospatial domains to improve research productivity and enable scientific breakthroughs. It has emerged as a new-generation GIS that enables synergistic advances in data-driven knowledge discovery, visualization and visual analytics, and collaborative problem solving and decision making. This paper describes a cutting-edge cyberGIS software environment from a system perspective. Two case studies focus on elucidating BioScope: a data-driven and computationally intensive cyberGIS application for bioenergy supply chain optimization, and MovePattern: interactive and multi-scale visual analytics for complex and massive movement data extracted from the Twitter steaming application programming interfaces. These studies demonstrate widely accessible capabilities of cyberGIS for resolving the variety, velocity, and volume of spatial big data to enable unprecedented data-intensive knowledge discovery.

Abstract:The articles in this special section focus on computational intelligence for big social data analytics. In the eras of social connectedness and social colonization, people are becoming increasingly enthusiastic about interacting, sharing, and collaborating through online collaborative media. In recent years, this collective intelligence has spread to many different areas, with particular focus on fields related to everyday life such as commerce, tourism, education, and health, causing the size of the Social Web to expand exponentially. The distillation of knowledge from such a large amount of unstructured information, however, is an extremely difficult task, as the contents of today's Web are perfectly suitable for human consumption, but remain hardly understandable to machines. Big social data analysis grows out of this need and combines multiple disciplines such as social network analysis, multimedia management, social media analytics, trend discovery, and opinion mining.

Abstract:Big data is fuelling the digital revolution in an increasingly knowledge driven and connected society by offering big data analytics and computational intelligence based solutions to reduce the complexity and cognitive burden on accessing and processing large volumes of data. In this paper, we discuss the importance of big data analytics and computational intelligence techniques applied to data produced from the myriad of pervasively connected machines and personalized devices offering embedded and distributed information processing capabilities. We provide a comprehensive survey of computational intelligence techniques appropriate for the effective processing and analysis of big data. We discuss a number of exemplar application areas that generate big data and can hence benefit from its effective processing. State of the art research and novel applications in health-care, intelligent transportation and social network sentiment analysis, are presented and discussed in the context of Big data, Cyber–Physical Systems (CPS), and Computational Intelligence (CI). We present a data modelling methodology, which introduces a novel biologically inspired universal generative modelling approach called Hierarchical Spatial–Temporal State Machine (HSTSM). The HSTSM modelling approach incorporates a number of soft computing techniques such as: deep belief networks, auto-encoders, agglomerative hierarchical clustering and temporal sequence processing, in order to address the computational challenges arising from analysing and processing large volumes of diverse data to provide an effective big data analytics tool for diverse application areas. A conceptual cyber–physical architecture, which can accommodate and benefit from the proposed methodology, is further presented.

Abstract:In the last few years, we have witnessed an exponentially growing amount of social media data from social networks, mainly driven by the huge popularity of Web and the rapid advances of multimedia and Internet technologies. Different from conventional data types, social media data are multi-model in nature, including content such as images, audio, and videos, concept such as discussion topic, tag, and annotation, and context such as links, profile, timestamp, and click-through. All these content, concept and context are essential data sources for mining semantics, user intents, trends, knowledge, etc., from social media data, as well as enabling intelligent applications on social media services. This rich media type has raised many new research challenges, ranging from large-scale social media content analysis and mining, concept discovery and monitoring, context-based services, to many other exciting new opportunities. The aim of this special issue is to bring out state-of-the-art research in this area and discover directions for future research. The special issue will serve as a forum for recent advances in the field, with an emphasis on mining the “3 C” (Content, Concept and Context). It received an enthusiastic response. While big data and IoT bring well-understood benefits to increase knowledge and improve the quality of our daily lives, they also face wide attacking surfaces, and thus raise critical concerns on notions of trust, security, and privacy. One of the fundamental questions is how to collect, store, and process the huge amounts of data in a secure and privacy-preserving manner, without compromising the potential of capitalization on big data and IoT.

Abstract:The papers in this special section focus on scholarly data collection and knowledge discovery. Academics and researchers worldwide continue to produce large numbers of scholarly documents including papers, books, technical reports, etc., and associated data such as tutorials, proposals, and course materials. The ever-increasing diversity of disciplines and complexity of real-word problems, require researchers to seek new inspiration and collaboration outside of their own fields. Nowadays, besides traditional venues of collaboration such as conference meetings, the Internet provides a wide range of platforms for scholars to engage with other scholars. These new platforms (such as Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and Wi-ki-style virtual collaboration sites) enrich and document the ways scholars share academic resources, exchange opinions, follow each other’s research, keep up with current research trends, and build their professional networks. The first part of this special issue includes two articles that exemplify research opportunities and challenges in scholarly big data. Their contributions cover three themes: scalable algorithms for extracting scholarly-specific information content, fine-grained tools for analyzing and anticipating scientific impact, and system design for supporting scholarly specific information query.

Abstract:Data mining has actively contributed to solving many real-world problems with a variety of techniques. Traditional approaches in this field are classification, clustering and regression. During the last few years a number of chal-lenges have emerged, such as imbalanced data, multi-label and multi-instance problems, low quality and/or noisy data or semi-supervised learning, among others [item 1) in the Appendix]. When these non-standard scenarios are encountered in the realm of big data, it remains an uncharted research territory, although a growing effort has been made to break the limits. The current trend is to address the classical and newly emerging data mining problems in big data and knowledge processing. Granular computing provides a powerful tool for multiple granularity and multiple-view data analysis at differ-ent granularity levels, which has demonstrated strong capabil-ities and advantages in intelligent data analysis, pattern recog-nition, machine learning and uncertain reasoning [item 2) inthe Appendix]. Big data often contains a significant amount of unstructured, uncertain and imprecise data. There are new challenges regarding the scalability of granular computing when addressing very big data sets [item 3) in the Appendix]. Big data mining relies on distributed computational strate-gies; it is often impossible to store and process data on one single computing node. The exploration of data mining and granular computing in big data and knowledge processing is an emerging field which crosses multiple research disciplines and industry domains, including transportation, communications, social network, medical health, and so on.

Abstract:Cyber-physical Systems (CPS) are the systematic combination of physical processes, information, and communication technology. Typical examples of CPS are civil infrastructure monitoring, industrial control, and avionic systems. Such systems are generally deployed as a network of interacting elements with a huge amount of data. In addition, with the rapid advance of sensing, computing, and storing technologies, the amount of data increases tremendously. This imposes fundamental challenges on the design and management of CPS in multiple aspects, such as energy efficiency, security, privacy, reliability, scalability, and flexibility. Tackling these challenges necessitates innovative techniques of data analytics for handling the massive data in CPS. In the design of innovative data analysis techniques, human activities and interactions with CPS must be taken into account since humans can monitor and control physical processes when interacting with very large data sets collected via sensors. However, various important human factors, e.g., predictable and repeating behavior, have not yet been well understood and fully taken into consideration in the current generation CPS. This special issue describes significant research contributions in the domain of human-interaction-aware data analytics for CPS. This special issue consists of eight high-quality research articles selected from 18 submissions that had covered a broad range of topics. The article “Catering to Your Concerns: Automatic Generation of Personalized Security-centric Descriptions for Android Apps” develops an innovative scheme to help users avoid malware and privacy-breaching apps by generating security descriptions that explain the privacyand security-related aspects of an Android app in clear and understandable terms. Taking human activities and interactions with cyberphysical systems into consideration, the article “Improved LDA Dimension Reduction-based Behavior Learning with Commodity WiFi for Cyber-physical Systems” designs a human-behaviorlearning system based on Channel State Information (CSI) utilizing a series of algorithms for data analysis and processing. To enable a sustainable edge computing paradigm while meeting the needs of home energy management and residents, the article “A Sustainable and User-behavior-aware Cyber-physical System for Home Energy Management” introduces a cyberphysical system based energy management framework. A novel system for drone surveillance is presented in the article entitled “A Crowdsensing-based Cyber-physical System for Drone Surveillance Using Random Finite Set Theory”; the proposed system utilizes surveillance data captured and sent from citizens’ mobile devices to facilitate jointly drone detection and tracking. The article entitled “Energy-efficient ECG Signal Compression for User Data Input in Cyber-physical Systems by Leveraging Empirical Mode Decomposition” develops the first scheme of leveraging empirical mode decomposition (EMD) on ECG signals for sparse feature modeling and compression and further proposes a new ECG signal compression framework based on an EMD-constructed feature dictionary. Abstract:The world is witnessing an unprecedented growth of cyber-physical systems (CPS), which are foreseen to revolutionize our world {via} creating new services and applications in a variety of sectors such as environmental monitoring, mobile-health systems, intelligent transportation systems and so on. The {information and communication technology }(ICT) sector is experiencing a significant growth in { data} traffic, driven by the widespread usage of smartphones, tablets and video streaming, along with the significant growth of sensors deployments that are anticipated in the near future. {It} is expected to outstandingly increase the growth rate of raw sensed data. In this paper, we present the CPS taxonomy {via} providing a broad overview of data collection, storage, access, processing and analysis. Compared with other survey papers, this is the first panoramic survey on big data for CPS, where our objective is to provide a panoramic summary of different CPS aspects. Furthermore, CPS {require} cybersecurity to protect {them} against malicious attacks and unauthorized intrusion, which {become} a challenge with the enormous amount of data that is continuously being generated in the network. {Thus, we also} provide an overview of the different security solutions proposed for CPS big data storage, access and analytics. We also discuss big data meeting green challenges in the contexts of CPS.

Abstract:The papers in this special section focus on Big Data infrastructure. Data is becoming an increasingly decisive resource in modern societies, economies, and governmental organizations. Big Data is an emerging paradigm encompassing various kinds of complex and large scale information beyond the processing capability of conventional software and databases. Various technologies are being discussed to support the handling of big data such as massively parallel processing databases, scalable storage systems, cloud computing platforms, Hadoop and Spark. Due to the multisource, massive, heterogeneous, and dynamic characteristics of application data involved in a distributed environment, one of the most important characteristics of Big Data is to carry out computing on the petabyte (PB), even the exabyte (EB)-level data with a complex computing process. Therefore, large-scale scalable Big Data Infrastructure with corresponding programming language support and software models for efficient processing in distributed environments such as cloud is on demand. Abstract:This Editorial introduces the PeerJ Computer Science Special Issue on Analysis and Mining of Social Media Data. The special issue called for submissions with a primary focus on the use of social media data, for a variety of fields including natural language processing, computational social science, data mining, information retrieval and recommender systems. Of the 48 abstract submissions that were deemed within the scope of the special issue and were invited to submit a full article, 17 were ultimately accepted. These included a diverse set of articles covering, inter alia , sentiment analysis, detection and mitigation of online harms, analytical studies focused on societal issues and analysis of images surrounding news. The articles primarily use Twitter, Facebook and Reddit as data sources; English, Arabic, Italian, Russian, Indonesian and Javanese as languages; and over a third of the articles revolve around COVID-19 as the main topic of study. This article discusses the motivation for launching such a special issue and provides an overview of the articles published in the issue.
