Abstract:We find Carroll non-BPS Dp-brane action by performing Carroll limit of a canonical form of unstable Dp-brane action. We analyze different Carroll limits and discuss solutions of the equations of motion of Carroll non-BPS Dp-brane at the tachyon vacuum.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a Carroll magnetic limit of a one-loop scalar effective action. We work on general static backgrounds and compute both divergent and finite parts of the effective action in this limit. We show, that the divergent part can be removed by adding local counterterms. The finite part is related to an effective action in a lower dimensional theory which however does not coincide in general with the one obtained by a Carroll limit in the classical counterpart.

Abstract:We study the Carrollian limit of the (general) quadratic gravity in four dimensions. We find that in order for the Carrollian theory to be a modification of the Carrollian limit of general relativity, the parameters in the action must depend on the speed of light in a specific way. By focusing on the leading and the next-to-leading orders in the Carrollian expansion, we show that there are four such non equivalent Carrollian theories. Imposing conditions to remove tachyons (from the linearized theory), we end up with a classification of Carrollian theories according to the leading-order and next-to-leading-order actions. All modify the Carrollian limit of general relativity with quartic terms of the extrinsic curvature. To the leading order, we show that two theories are equivalent to general relativity, one to $R+R^2$ theory, and one to the general quadratic gravity. To the next-to-leading order, two are equivalent to $R+R^2$ while the other two to the general quadratic gravity. We study the two theories that are equivalent to $R+R^2$ to the leading order and write their magnetic limit actions.

Abstract:We define the Carrollian black holes corresponding to the limit of Schwarzschild-(A)dS spacetime and its higher-derivative counterpart known as Schwarzschild-Bach-(A)dS spacetime, which is also a static spherically symmetric vacuum solution of quadratic gravity. By analyzing motion of massive particles in these geometries, we found that: In the case of Schwarzschild-(A)dS, a (nearly) tangential particle from infinity will wind around the extremal surface with a finite number of windings depending on the impact parameter and the cosmological constant. In Schwarzschild-Bach-(A)dS, a particle passing close enough to the extremal surface will have an infinite number of windings; hence, it will not escape to asymptotic infinity as in Schwarzschild-(A)dS. We also calculate the thermodynamical quantities for such black holes and argue that it is analogous to an incompressible thermodynamical system with divergent entropy when the temperature goes to zero (in the strict Carroll limit). We then define a divergent specific heat that can be positive, negative, or zero.

Abstract:We consider the Carrollian limit of ModMax electrodynamics, namely the limit of vanishing speed of light, for the most general, four-dimensional, duality and conformal invariant electromagnetism. The theory is parameterized by a unique real constant $\gamma$, which remains playing a non-trivial role in the magnetic Carrollian case, while it can be removed in the electric Carrollian contraction, and we therefore focus in the former. Applying the technique of Lie point symmetries, we obtain that the magnetic limit is invariant under the Carrollian group, as well as under the local translation in Carrollian time $x^{0}\rightarrow x^{0\prime}=x^{0}+f\left(x^{i}\right) $ and $x^{i}\rightarrow x^{i\prime}=x^{i}$, with $f$ being an arbitrary function. A diagonal part of the symmetries span the Conformal Carroll algebra of level $2$, $\mathfrak{ccarr}_2$ in four dimensions. Two additional internal symmetries remain in the Carrollian limit of ModMax standing for the conformal invariance of the theory, as well as the invariance under duality transformations.

Abstract:Despite the absence of a lightcone structure, some solutions of Carroll gravity show black hole-like behaviour. We define Carroll black holes as solutions of Carroll gravity that exhibit Carroll thermal properties and have a Carroll extremal surface, notions introduced in our work. The latter is a Carroll analogue of a Lorentzian extremal surface. As examples, we discuss the Carroll versions of Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstroem, and BTZ black holes and black hole solutions of generic 1+1 dimensional Carroll dilaton gravity, including Carroll JT and Carroll Witten black holes.

Carrollian Structure of the Null Boundary Solution Space

Abstract:We study pure $D$ dimensional Einstein gravity in spacetimes with a generic null boundary. We focus on the symplectic form of the solution phase space which comprises a $2D$ dimensional boundary part and a $2(D(D-3)/2+1)$ dimensional bulk part. The symplectic form is the sum of the bulk and boundary parts, obtained through integration over a codimension 1 surface (null boundary) and a codimension 2 spatial section of it, respectively. Notably, while the total symplectic form is a closed 2-form over the solution phase space, neither the boundary nor the bulk symplectic forms are closed due to the symplectic flux of the bulk modes passing through the boundary. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the $D(D-3)/2+1$ dimensional Lagrangian submanifold of the bulk part of the solution phase space has a Carrollian structure, with the metric on the $D(D-3)/2$ dimensional part being the Wheeler-DeWitt metric, and the Carrollian kernel vector corresponding to the outgoing Robinson-Trautman gravitational wave solution.

Abstract:We study various aspects of the Carroll limit in which the speed of light is sent to zero. A large part of this paper is devoted to the quantization of Carroll field theories. We show that these exhibit infinite degeneracies in the spectrum and may suffer from non-normalizable ground states. As a consequence, partition functions of Carroll systems are ill-defined and do not lead to sensible thermodynamics. These seemingly pathological properties might actually be a virtue in the context of flat space holography. Better defined is the Carroll $\textit{regime}$, in which we consider the leading order term in an expansion around vanishing speed of light without taking the strict Carroll limit. Such an expansion may lead to sensible notions of Carroll thermodynamics. An interesting example is a gas of massless particles with an imaginary chemical potential conjugate to the momentum. In the Carroll regime we show that the partition function of such a gas leads to an equation of state with $w=-1$. As a separate story, we study aspects of Carroll gravity and couplings to Carrollian energy-momentum tensors. We discuss many examples of solutions to Carroll gravity, including wormholes, Maxwell fields, solutions with a cosmological constant, and discuss the structure of geodesics in a Carroll geometry. The coupling of matter to Carroll gravity also allows us to derive energy-momentum tensors for hypothetical Carroll fluids from expanding relativistic fluids as well as directly from hydrostatic partition functions.

Abstract:We show that our previous work on Galilei and Carroll gravity, apt for particles, can be generalized to Galilei and Carroll gravity theories adapted to p -branes ( p = 0, 1, 2, ⋯). Within this wider brane perspective, we make use of a formal map, given in the literature, between the corresponding p -brane Carroll and Galilei algebras where the index describing the directions longitudinal (transverse) to the Galilei brane is interchanged with the index covering the directions transverse (longitudinal) to the Carroll brane with the understanding that the time coordinate is always among the longitudinal directions. This leads among other things in 3D to a map between Galilei particles and Carroll strings and in 4D to a similar map between Galilei strings and Carroll strings. We show that this formal map extends to the corresponding Lie algebra expansion of the Poincaré algebra and, therefore, to several extensions of the Carroll and Galilei algebras including central extensions. We use this formal map to construct several new examples of Carroll gravity actions. Furthermore, we discuss the symmetry between Carroll and Galilei at the level of the p -brane sigma model action and apply this formal symmetry to give several examples of 3 D and 4 D particles and strings in a curved Carroll background.

Brown-Kuchar Mechanism for Unstable D-Brane at Large Tachyon Regime

Abstract:We study space-time filling unstable D-brane coupled to gravity. We find Hamiltonian for this D-brane and then we implement Brown-Kuchar formalism for this system. We calculate algebra of constraints of deparametrized theory and we show that for large $T$ the Poisson brackets between new constraints are zero. Then we define gauge invariant functions on phase space following deparametrization construction introduced in [9].

Abstract:Using carefully chosen projections, we consider different Carroll limits of relativistic Dirac fermions in any spacetime dimensions. These limits define Carroll fermions of two types: electric and magnetic. The latter type transforms as a reducible but indecomposable representation of the Carroll group. We also build action principles for all Carroll fermions we introduce; in particular, in even dimensions we provide an action principle for a minimal magnetic Carroll fermion, having the same number of components as a Dirac spinor. We then explore the coupling of these fermions to magnetic Carroll gravity in both its first-order and second-order formulations.

On self-dual Carrollian conformal nonlinear electrodynamics

Abstract:In this work, we study the duality symmetry group of Carrollian (nonlinear) electrodynamics and propose a family of Carrollian ModMax theories, which are invariant under Carrollian $\text{SO}(2)$ electromagnetic (EM) duality transformations and conformal transformation. We define the Carrollian $\text{SO}(2)$ EM transformations, with the help of Hodge duality in Carrollian geometry, then we rederive the Gaillard-Zumino consistency condition for EM duality of Carrollian nonlinear electrodynamics. Together with the traceless condition for the energy-momentum tensor, we are able to determine the Lagrangian of the Carrollian ModMax theories among pure electrodynamics. We furthermore study their behaviors under the $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ deformation flow, and show that these theories deform to each other and may reach two endpoints under the flow, with one of the endpoint being the Carrollian Maxwell theory. As a byproduct, we construct a family of two-dimensional Carrollian ModMax-like multiple scalar theories, which are closed under the $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ flow and may flow to a BMS free multi-scalar model.

Abstract:Carroll symmetry arises from Poincaré symmetry upon taking the limit of vanishing speed of light. We determine the constraints on the energy-momentum tensor implied by Carroll symmetry and show that for energy-momentum tensors of perfect fluid form, these imply an equation of state E + P = 0 for energy density plus pressure. Therefore Carroll symmetry might be relevant for dark energy and inflation. In the Carroll limit, the Hubble radius goes to zero and outside it recessional velocities are naturally large compared to the speed of light. The de Sitter group of isometries, after the limit, becomes the conformal group in Euclidean flat space. We also study the Carroll limit of chaotic inflation, and show that the scalar field is naturally driven to have an equation of state with w = − 1. Finally we show that the freeze-out of scalar perturbations in the two point function at horizon crossing is a consequence of Carroll symmetry. To make the paper self-contained, we include a brief pedagogical review of Carroll symmetry, Carroll particles and Carroll field theories that contains some new material as well. In particular we show, using an expansion around speed of light going to zero, that for scalar and Maxwell type theories one can take two different Carroll limits at the level of the action. In the Maxwell case these correspond to the electric and magnetic limit. For point particles we show that there are two types of Carroll particles: those that cannot move in space and particles that cannot stand still.

Noncommutativity and Tachyon Condensation

Abstract:We study the fuzzy or noncommutative Dp-branes in terms of infinitely many unstable D0-branes, from which we can construct any Dp-branes. We show that the tachyon condensation of the unstable D0-branes induces the noncommutativity. In the infinite tachyon condensation limit, most of the unstable D0-branes disappear and remaining D0-branes are actually the BPS D0-branes with the correct noncommutative coordinates. For the fuzzy S^2 case, we explicitly show only the D0-branes corresponding to the lowest Landau level survive in the limit. We also show that a boundary state for a Dp-brane satisfying the Dirichlet boundary condition on a curved submanifold embedded in the flat space is not localized on the submanifold. This implies that the Dp-brane on it is ambiguous at the string scale and solves the problem for a spherical D2-brane with a unit flux on the world volume which should be equivalent to one D0-brane. We also discuss the diffeomorphism in the D0-brane picture.
