Abstract:In this work, we study the duality symmetry group of Carrollian (nonlinear) electrodynamics and propose a family of Carrollian ModMax theories, which are invariant under Carrollian $\text{SO}(2)$ electromagnetic (EM) duality transformations and conformal transformation. We define the Carrollian $\text{SO}(2)$ EM transformations, with the help of Hodge duality in Carrollian geometry, then we rederive the Gaillard-Zumino consistency condition for EM duality of Carrollian nonlinear electrodynamics. Together with the traceless condition for the energy-momentum tensor, we are able to determine the Lagrangian of the Carrollian ModMax theories among pure electrodynamics. We furthermore study their behaviors under the $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ deformation flow, and show that these theories deform to each other and may reach two endpoints under the flow, with one of the endpoint being the Carrollian Maxwell theory. As a byproduct, we construct a family of two-dimensional Carrollian ModMax-like multiple scalar theories, which are closed under the $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ flow and may flow to a BMS free multi-scalar model.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the issue of duality in Carrollian (ultra-relativistic limit) nonlinear electrodynamics and proposes a new family of theories—the Carrollian ModMax theories, which remain invariant under Carrollian SO(2) electromagnetic duality transformations and conformal transformations. Specifically, the paper first reviews the basics of Carrollian symmetry and geometry, then defines the Carrollian Hodge dual operation applicable to degenerate metrics, and uses it to study the discrete electromagnetic duality in Carrollian Maxwell electrodynamics. By introducing an appropriate Carrollian Hodge dual operation, the authors find that although Carrollian Maxwell electrodynamics is not "self-dual" in the strict sense, the invariance of the theory can be maintained through a modified electromagnetic duality transformation. Next, the paper extends the Gaillard-Zumino condition to Carrollian nonlinear electrodynamics to explore continuous generalized duality symmetry. Through this condition, the authors analyze the generalized duality symmetry of Carrollian Maxwell electrodynamics and find a new family of Carrollian nonlinear electrodynamics theories—the Carrollian ModMax theories, which not only maintain conformal invariance but also possess SO(2) electromagnetic duality invariance. Additionally, the paper studies the behavior of these theories under the \(\sqrt{T\overline{T}}\) deformation flow and demonstrates how these theories transform into each other. One endpoint is the Carrollian Maxwell theory, and these endpoint theories are fixed points of the deformation flow but have different duality symmetries. Notably, the Carrollian ModMax theories cannot be generated from the Carrollian Maxwell theory through the \(\sqrt{T\overline{T}}\) deformation flow, and at the endpoints, this deformation flow becomes irreversible. Finally, as a byproduct of the research, the authors construct a family of 2-dimensional Carrollian ModMax-type multi-scalar theories and discuss their behavior under the \(\sqrt{T\overline{T}}\) deformation flow. These theories also flow to one of two fixed endpoints, one of which is the BMS free multi-scalar theory, and at these endpoints, the deformation flow is also irreversible.
