Abstract:The ultra-high electroanalytical sensitivity is undoubtedly inseparable from the efficient sensing nanomaterials and enhanced interfacial interactions. However, the in-depth exploration for the exact understanding of the sensitive mechanism in structure-activity relationship is always persistent and challenging. It is urgent to obtain insights into the connection between electrochemical performance and intrinsic electronic features of the nanomaterials from the density functional theory (DFT). Herein, the affiliation between the configuration, electron transfer, the activity or selectivity are systematically reviewed. Moreover, sets of significant descriptors and analytical methods for discriminating the divergent performance of sensitive interfaces are emphasized, including the band structure, orbital coupling, work function, d-band center, charge density, and the adsorption free energy. Furthermore, the existing limitations and prospects in the advanced DFT application are also presented, which embodies boundless potential for the in-depth elucidation of the reaction mechanism and purposeful screening/customization for promising sensing materials.
