Abstract:A easy method that seeks and identifies diffraction-free optical beam is presented according to the concept of Fourier Optics in this paper.It is also proved that the diffraction-free optical bean truncated by limited circular aperture won't be diffraction-free optical beam any more.

Abstract:Freeform optics constitutes a new technology that is currently driving substantial changes in beam shaping. Most of the current beam shaping systems are elaborately tailored for fixed optical properties, which means the output light distribution of a beam shaping system usually cannot be changed. What we present here is a class of beam shaping systems, the optical properties of which can be changed to meet the requirements for different applications. The proposed beam shaping system is composed of a freeform lens and a non-classical zoom system which is designed by ray aiming and the conservation of energy instead of aberration control. The freeform lens includes two elaborately designed freeform optical surfaces, by which both the intensity distribution and wave-front of an incident light beam are manipulated in a desired manner. The light beam after propagating through the non-classical zoom system produces an illumination pattern on a fixed observation plane with a variable pattern size and an unchanged irradiance distribution at different zoom positions. Two design examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed beam shaping systems.

Abstract:Imitated the optical system of Rowland circle structure, the Rowland sphere structure is built in this paper, the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction scalar integral formula of electromagnetic wave is simplified on the Rowland sphere structure, the computational formulas of spatial frequency spectrum and diffractional far field distribution from the weakly guiding optical fiber LP mode are derived. The concept of central disc in LP 01 mode optical fiber diffractional far field, which had analogy to the Airy disc of plane wave Fraunhofer diffraction from circular aperture, is presented, and the calculational formulas of LP 01 mode optical fiber diffractional far field divergence half width is deduced in the end of this paper.

Abstract:The analytical expression for the diffraction distribution on the axis of a Gaussian beam through a circular phase-plate was obtained. It is found that the intensity of the diffracted light is larger than that of the free Gaussian beam in a wide range, but the intensity in the infinite far field is less than that of the free Gaussian beam.

Abstract:An acousto-optic deflector model considering sound attenuation and Gaussian optical field is presented based on acousto-optic effect and parametric interaction.According to the model,the effects of ultrasonic frequency,sound power and the light incidence angle on the diffraction light are studied. Besides,the different effects of the three factors above are compared when there is sound attenuation and not.The computer simulation results shows that diffraction efficiency of deflector decreases when sound attenuation exists,which leads to the aberration of diffraction wave and position excursion of peak value of diffraction light intensity.

Abstract:Principles and transformation properties of cos beams were given in this paper, and demonstrations of diffraction-free beam propagation were realized for the first time. Abstract:Beam shaping, in other words, the control of both intensity distribution and phase profile, has a wide range of applications. In this paper, double freeform surfaces are utilized to shape collimated beams, realizing an arbitrary output wavefront with desired illumination pattern. Freeform surfaces are designed by solving a second order partial differential equation (PDE) of the Monge-AmpSre (MA) type, without the limitation of symmetry or paraxial approximation. The mathematical derivation of the PDE is based on the Snell's law, the energy conservation law along infinitesimal tubes of rays and the constancy of the OPL. The PDE is discretized with a finite difference scheme into a system of nonlinear equations, which can be numerically solved by Newton's method. Since Newton's method requires a good initialization for the iteration, a simultaneously point-by-point method, based on ray mapping, is employed to find the initial iterate. Different design examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness and wide application of our method, transforming a collimated Gaussian beam into a spherical wavefront with uniform illumination patterns. Variable-sized uniform illumination pattern can be obtained by moving the observation plane due to a potential benefit of the spherical output wavefront.

Abstract:The numerical method based on the fast Fourier transform (FFT) is generally applied to calculate the Fresnel diffraction field, which would suffer from sampling constraints. To break this limit, in this Letter, the semi-analytic Fresnel diffraction calculation method is proposed based on polynomial decomposition. The diffraction field is computed by using properly analytic Fresnel diffraction basis functions (FDBFs) according to the application requirements. Analytic FDBF is calculated based on Legendre or Chebyshev polynomials by using the object-domain frequency division multiplexing method. The proposed method offers arbitrary sampling, high-flexibility, and high-accuracy diffraction calculation in the full Fresnel region. The computational efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are compared with FFT-based methods. It has potential application in light field analysis, wavefront sensing, and image processing.

Abstract:Realization of super-diffraction limiting propagation by cos beams. The principles and transformation properties of cos beams are given in this paper, and the super-diffraction limiting propagation of cos beams are demonstrated experimentally. Finally, we report that a series of new beams whose divergence and intensity, the both, are better than Gaussian beams which are invented as a patent and it is going to be produced.

Abstract:Conical refraction of optical beams with circular symmetry is often analyzed using Belsky-Khapalyuk-Berry (BKB) theory; however, for beams with noncircular symmetry, it is difficult to obtain analytical expressions for far-field diffraction patterns. We propose a method, based on fast Fourier transform (FFT), for calculating conical refraction of beams with noncircular symmetry and verify it experimentally using a quasi-plane wave passing through a square aperture and focusing lens. Excellent agreement between theoretical and experimental results has been achieved.

Abstract:In general, Fourier transform lenses are considered as ideal in the design algorithms of diffractive optical elements (DOEs). However, the inherent aberrations of a real Fourier transform lens disturb the far field pattern. The difference between the generated pattern and the expected design will impact the system performance. Therefore, a method for modifying the Fourier spectrum of DOEs without introducing other optical elements to reduce the aberration effect of the Fourier transform lens is proposed. By applying this method, beam shaping performance is improved markedly for the optical system with a real Fourier transform lens. The experiments carried out with a commercial Fourier transform lens give evidence for this method. The method is capable of reducing the system complexity as well as improving its performance.

Abstract:With the help of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method, a formula is given to study the pulsed spherical beams with the truncated cross section propagating in free space, where the paraxial approximation are also adopted in the derivation. As art application, a theoretical calculation of convergent isodiffracting pulsed beam propagation is presented as an approximation of spherical pulsed beam propagation. Simulation is also shown to illustrate the characteristics of focusing pulsed beam through several kinds of converging lens.

Abstract:Fast optimization algorithms of the design of diffractive optical elements (DOEs) for beam shaping are often based on fast Fourier transform (FFT), and the demand of the sampling theorem must be met when FFT is used to calculate the light intensity. Limited by the fabricating technology, the pixel size of a DOE cannot be too small. For beam shaping in Fresnel diffraction domain, given that the sampling interval of a DOE is fixed, if the diffraction distance is too short, all FFT algorithms would not meet the demand of the sampling theorem, and then the results of beam shaping would become worse. In this paper, the disadvantages of the FFT algorithms in near Fresnel diffraction domain are discussed, and an area division method is proposed for the DOEs design. The simulation and experimental results show the validity of the proposed area division method.

Abstract:Limited-diffraction beams are a class of waves that may be localized in space and time. Theoretically, these beams are propagation invariant and can propagate to an infinite distance without spreading. In practice, when these beams are produced with wave sources of a finite aperture and energy, they have a very large depth of field, meaning that they can keep a small beam width over a large distance. Because of this property, limited-diffraction beams may have applications in various areas such as medical imaging and tissue characterization. In this paper, fundamentals of limited-diffraction beams are reviewed and the studies of these beams are put into a unified theoretical framework. Theory of limited-diffraction beams is further developed. New limited-diffraction solutions to Klein-Gordon Equation and Schrodinger Equation, as well as limited-diffraction solutions to these equations in confined spaces are obtained. The relationship between the transformation that converts any solutions to an (-1)-dimensional wave equation to limited-diffraction solutions of an -dimensional equation and the Lorentz transformation is clarified and extended. The transformation is also applied to the Klein-Gordon Equation. In addition, applications of limited-diffraction beams are summarized.

Abstract:A light beam propagating with an infinite anti-diffracting distance requires infinite power to preserve its shape. However, the fundamental barrier of finite power in free space has made the problem of diffraction insurmountable over the past few decades. Here, to overcome this limitation, we report an approach that employs the multiple energy oscillation mechanism, thereby permitting the creation of a light beam with an ultralong anti-diffracting distance in free space. The anti-diffracting distance is no longer restricted by finite power in free space but instead depends on the number of energy oscillations. This unprecedented propagation behavior is attributed to a new understanding of non-diffractive light beam: when an anti-diffracting light beam completely discharges its energy, it cannot recharge again. A versatile optical pen is therefore developed to manipulate the number, amplitude, position and phase of energy oscillations for an arbitrary numerical aperture of a focusing lens so that energy recharge can occur in free space and multiple energy oscillations can be realized. A light beam with a tunable number of energy oscillations is eventually generated in free space and propagates along a wavy trajectory. This work will enable extending non-diffractive light beams to an expanded realm and facilitate extensive developments in optics and other research fields, such as electronics and acoustics.

Abstract:Abstract In physical optics, Fresnel diffraction matters. The single Fourier transform method has been widely used in Fresnel diffraction calculation and can perform the direct computation of the output field with high efficiency. Based on a phase-space analysis, we find that the conventional single Fourier transform method cannot correctly deal with the full bandwidth of the input field. Aliasing occurs with high-frequency components because the bandwidth transfer capacity of the conventional method is insufficient, which greatly deteriorates the calculation accuracy. To address this serious problem, we propose a single Fourier transform-based full-bandwidth Fresnel diffraction calculation method. By rearrangement of the sampling resources, all the frequency components can be correctly transferred for accurate, efficient, and flexible Fresnel diffraction calculation.

Abstract:The design of a diffractive optical element (DOE) for true beam smoothing in the fractional Fourier transform domain is described. Based on the Fresnel integrals, the intensity distribution on the output plane is calculated accurately and the discretization error of the spherical phase factor is avoided. The 'fine design' of the DOE for true beam smoothing is completed with the sampling interval chosen as half of the traditional sampling interval. Simulation results show that the intensity at any point on the output plane fully meets the required demands, not just those sampling points used in the optimization.
