Abstract:More than a century ago, L. E. J. Brouwer proved a famous theorem, which says that any orientation preserving homeomorphism of the plane having a periodic point must have a fixed point. In recent years, there are still some authors giving various proofs of this fixed point theorem. In \cite{Fa}, Fathi showed that the condition``having a periodic point'' in this theorem can be weakened to ``having a non-wandering point''. In this paper, we first give a new proof of Brouwer's theorem, which is relatively more simpler and the statement is more compact. Further, we propose a notion of BP-chain recurrent points, which is a generalization of the concept of non-wandering points, and we prove that if an orientation preserving homeomorphism of the plane has a BP-chain recurrent point, then it has a fixed point. This further weakens the condition in the Brouwer's fixed point theorem on plane.

Abstract:We show that any sequence of integers satisfying necessary Dold's congruences is realized as the sequence of fixed point indices of the iterates of an orientation-reversing homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}^{m}$ for $m\geq 3$. As an element of the construction of the above homeomorphism, we consider the class of boundary-preserving homeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^{m}_{+}$ and give the answer to [Problem 10.2, Topol. Methods Nonlinear Anal. 50 (2017), 643 - 667] providing a complete description of the forms of fixed point indices for this class of maps.

Abstract:The bounded orbit conjecture says that every homeomorphism on the plane with each of its orbits being bounded must have a fixed point. Brouwer's translation theorem asserts that the conjecture is true for orientation preserving homeomorphisms, but Boyles' counterexample shows that it is false for the orientation reversing case. In this paper, we give a more comprehensible construction of counterexamples to the conjecture. Roughly speaking, we construct an orientation reversing homeomorphisms $f$ on the square $J^2=[-1, 1]^2$ with $\omega(x, f)=\{(-1. 1), (1, 1)\}$ and $\alpha(x, f)=\{(-1. -1), (1, -1)\}$ for each $x\in (-1, 1)^2$. Then by a semi-conjugacy defined by pushing an appropriate part of $\partial J^2$ into $(-1, 1)^2$, $f$ induces a homeomorphism on the plane, which is a counterexample.

Matching Algorithmic Bounds for Finding a Brouwer Fixed Point

Abstract:We prove a new discrete fixed point theorem for direction-preserving functions defined on integer points, based on a novel characterization of boundary conditions for the existence of fixed points. The theorem allows us to derive an improved algorithm for finding such a fixed point. We also develop a new lower bound proof technique. Together, they allow us to derive an asymptotic matching bound for the problem of finding a fixed point in a hypercube of any constantly bounded finite dimension. Exploring a linkage with the approximation version of the continuous fixed point problem, we obtain asymptotic matching bounds for the complexity of the approximate Brouwer fixed point problem in the continuous case for Lipschitz functions. It settles a fifteen-years-old open problem of Hirsch, Papadimitriou, and Vavasis by improving both the upper and lower bounds. Our characterization for the existence of a fixed point is also applicable to functions defined on nonconvex domains, which makes it a potentially useful tool for the design and analysis of algorithms for fixed points in general domains.

Abstract:We give a direct proof of Schauder's fixed point theorem in the setting of geodesic metric spaces, generalizing the classical Schauder's theorem and improving a recent version of this theorem in CAT(κ) spaces. Abstract:Let $X$ be a metric space. Recently in~[1] it was considered a new type of mappings $T\colon X\to X$ which can be characterized as mappings contracting perimeters of triangles. These mappings are defined by the condition based on the mapping of three points of the space instead of two, as it is adopted in many fixed-point theorems. In the present paper we consider so-called $(F,G)$-contracting mappings, which form a more general class of mappings than mappings contracting perimeters of triangles. The fixed-point theorem for these mappings is proved. We prove also a fixed-point theorem for mappings contracting perimeters of triangles in the sense of Edelstein.

Abstract:In this paper, a generalization of fixed-point mappings with an iterate at a point in complete metric spaces is shown, using the notions of T-closed sets and i-P-regularity/d-P-regularity, proving conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the fixed point. Examples are provided to illustrate the results and an application to coupled fixed points is shown.

Abstract:In the paper, we address the following problem, often encountered in geometric constructions: having defined an orientation preserving diffeomorphism in a number of `patches' on a manifold $\mathcal{M}$, can we extend it to a diffeomorphism of the whole manifold $\mathcal{M}$? We give a positive answer, provided the `patches' are sufficiently regular. Then, we extend the same result to the case of bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms and homeomorphisms.

Abstract:The present paper is devoted to a study of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms on three-dimensional manifolds with a non-wandering set consisting of a finite number of surface attractors and repellers. The main results of the paper relate to a class of homeomorphisms for which the restriction of the map to a connected component of the non-wandering set is topologically conjugate to an orientation-preserving pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism. The ambient -conjugacy of a homeomorphism from the class with a locally direct product of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism and a rough transformation of the circle is proved. In addition, we prove that the centralizer of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms consists of only pseudo-Anosov and periodic maps.

Abstract:For a disk $D$ in the plane $\mathbb R^2$ and a plane map $f$, we give several conditions on the restriction of $f$ to the boundary $\partial D$ of $D$ which imply the existence of a fixed point of $f$ in some specified domain in $D$. These conditions are similar to those appeared in the intermediate value theorem for maps on the real line. As an application of the main results, we establish a fixed point theorem for plane maps having an outflanking arc, which extends the famous theorem due to Brouwer: if $f$ is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism on the plane and has a periodic point, then it has a fixed point.

Abstract:We give a complete proof of the following theorem which was conjectured by Jakob Nielsen for closed oriented surfaces.THEOREM. Let f: M --> M be a homeomorphism of a compact surface. When M is closed, then f is isotopic to a diffeomorphism with N(f) fixed points, where N(f) is its Nielsen number. When M has boundary, N(f) should be replaced by the relative Nielsen number N(f; M, partial derivative M) defined by Schirmer.Another result is the inequality \L(f) - chi(M)\ less-than-or-equal-to N(f) - chi(M) when chi(M) < 0, where L(f) is the Lefschetz number and chi(M) is the Euler characteristic.

Abstract:We give a new proof of Cartan's fixed point theorem using topological fixed point theory. For an odd dimensional, simply connected and complete manifold having non-positive curvature, we further prove that every isometry with finite order not only fixes a point, but also maps a pencil of geodesics to itself. We apply similar techniques to the automorphism group of a smoothly bounded domain in the complex plane having connectivity three or more. We show that any prime dividing the order of this finite group must divide a certain integer depending only on the connectivity of the domain.

Abstract:We study the basic question of characterizing which boundary homeomorphisms of the unit sphere can be extended to a Sobolev homeomorphism of the interior in 3D space. While the planar variants of this problem are well-understood, completely new and direct ways of constructing an extension are required in 3D. We prove, among other things, that a Sobolev homeomorphism φ : R 2 → onto R 2 in W loc 1 , p ( R 2 , R 2 ) for some p ∈ [ 1 , ∞ ) admits a homeomorphic extension h : R 3 → onto R 3 in W loc 1 , q ( R 3 , R 3 ) for 1 ⩽ q < 3 2 p . Such an extension result is nearly sharp, as the bound q = 3 2 p cannot be improved due to the Hölder embedding. The case q = 3 gains an additional interest as it also provides an L 1 -variant of the celebrated Beurling-Ahlfors quasiconformal extension result.
