Abstract:In this paper, we study the nonexistence of bent functions in the class of Boolean functions without monomials of degree less than d in their algebraic normal forms (ANF). We prove that n-variable Boolean functions in such class are not bent when there are not more than n + d - 3 monomials in their ANFs. We also show that an n-variable Boolean function is not bent if it has no monomial of degree less than ⌈3n/8 + 3/4⌉ in its ANF.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate properties of generalized bent Boolean functions and 2k-bent (i.e., negabent, octabent, hexadecabent, et al.) Boolean functions in a uniform framework. From the Hadamard matrices, Hodzic and Pasalic presented sufficient conditions for generalized bent functions. Using cyclotomic fields and the decomposition of generalized bent functions, we generalize their results, prove that Hodzic and Pasalic's conditions of generalized bent functions are not only sufficient but also necessary, and completely characterize generalized bent functions in terms of their component functions. Furthermore, we present a secondary construction of bent functions or semibent functions from generalized bent functions. Finally, we give the relations of generalized bent functions and 2 k -bent functions, demonstrate that 2 k -bent functions are actually a special class of generalized bent functions, and completely characterize 2 k -bent functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dual of generalized bent functions $f: V_{n}\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_{p^k}$ where $V_{n}$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ and $p$ is an odd prime, $k$ is a positive integer. It is known that weakly regular generalized bent functions always appear in pairs since the dual of a weakly regular generalized bent function is also a weakly regular generalized bent function. The dual of non-weakly regular generalized bent functions can be generalized bent or not generalized bent. By generalizing the construction of \cite{Cesmelioglu5}, we obtain an explicit construction of generalized bent functions for which the dual can be generalized bent or not generalized bent. We show that the generalized indirect sum construction method given in \cite{Wang} can provide a secondary construction of generalized bent functions for which the dual can be generalized bent or not generalized bent. By using the knowledge on ideal decomposition in cyclotomic field, we prove that $f^{**}(x)=f(-x)$ if $f$ is a generalized bent function and its dual $f^{*}$ is also a generalized bent function. For any non-weakly regular generalized bent function $f$ which satisfies that $f(x)=f(-x)$ and its dual $f^{*}$ is generalized bent, we give a property and as a consequence, we prove that there is no self-dual generalized bent function $f: V_{n}\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_{p^k}$ if $p\equiv 3 \ (mod \ 4)$ and $n$ is odd. For $p \equiv 1 \ (mod \ 4)$ or $p\equiv 3 \ (mod \ 4)$ and $n$ is even, we give a secondary construction of self-dual generalized bent functions. In the end, we characterize the relations between the generalized bentness of the dual of generalized bent functions and the bentness of the dual of bent functions, as well as the self-duality relations between generalized bent functions and bent functions by the decomposition of generalized bent functions.

On constructing bent functions from cyclotomic mappings

Abstract:We study a new method of constructing Boolean bent functions from cyclotomic mappings. Three generic constructions are obtained by considering different branch functions such as Dillon functions, Niho functions and Kasami functions over multiplicative cosets and additive cosets respectively. As a result, several new explicit infinite families of bent functions and their duals are derived. We demonstrate that some previous constructions are special cases of our simple constructions. In addition, by studying their polynomial forms, we observe that the last construction provides some examples which are EA-inequivalent to five classes of monomials, Dillon type and Niho type polynomials.

Abstract:Based on the definition of generalized partially bent functions, using the theory of linear transformation, the relationship among generalized partially bent functions over ring Z N, generalized bent functions over ring Z N and affine functions is discussed. When N is a prime number, it is proved that a generalized partially bent function can be decomposed as the addition of a generalized bent function and an affine function. The result obtained here generalizes the main works concerning partially bent functions by Claud Carlet in [1].

Abstract:As a class of optimal combinatorial objects, bent functions have important applications in cryptography, sequence design, and coding theory. Bent idempotents are a subclass of bent functions and of great interest, since they can be stored in less space and allow faster computation of the Walsh-Hadamard transform. The objective of this paper is to present a generic construction of bent functions from known ones. It includes the previous constructions of bent functions by Mesnager and Xu et al. as special cases, and produces new bent functions, which cannot be produced by earlier ones. In particular, it also generates infinite families of bent idempotents over ${F}_{2^{2m}}$ of any algebraic degree between 2 and $m$ . This together with a recent construction by Su and Tang gives a positive answer to an open problem on bent idempotents proposed by Carlet. In addition, an infinite family of anti-self-dual bent functions is obtained in which the sum of any three distinct functions is again an anti-self-dual bent function in this family. This solves an open problem recently proposed by Mesnager.

Abstract:We introduce and study dual functions of generalized Boolean bent functions over Z(4), i.e., functions from F2-vector spaces to Z(4) whose Fourier transforms have constant magnitudes. For a special class of generalized Boolean bent functions with even number of variables constructed from a class of quadratic binary bent functions in polynomial forms proposed by the first author, we explicitly determine their dual functions by explicitly determining duals of these binary bent functions.

Abstract:Let $n=2m$. In the present paper, we study the binomial Boolean functions of the form $$f_{a,b}(x) = \mathrm{Tr}_1^{n}(a x^{2^m-1 }) +\mathrm{Tr}_1^{2}(bx^{\frac{2^n-1}{3} }), $$ where $m$ is an even positive integer, $a\in \mathbb{F}_{2^n}^*$ and $b\in \mathbb{F}_4^*$. We show that $ f_{a,b}$ is a bent function if the Kloosterman sum $$K_{m}\left(a^{2^m+1}\right)=1+ \sum_{x\in \mathbb{F}_{2^m}^*} (-1)^{\mathrm{Tr}_1^{m}(a^{2^m+1} x+ \frac{1}{x})}$$ equals $4$, thus settling an open problem of Mesnager. The proof employs tools including computing Walsh coefficients of Boolean functions via multiplicative characters, divisibility properties of Gauss sums, and graph theory.

Abstract:In this article, we provide the first systematic analysis of bent functions f on Fn2 in the Maiorana-McFarland class M regarding the origin and cardinality of their M-subspaces, i.e., vector subspaces such that for any two elements a, b from this subspace, the second-order derivative DaDbf is the zero function on Fn2. By imposing restrictions on permutations π of Fn/2 2, we specify the conditions so that Maiorana-McFarland bent functions f(x, y) = x · π(y) + h(y) admit a unique M-subspace of dimension n/2. On the other hand, we show that permutations π with linear structures give rise to Maiorana-McFarland bent functions that do not have this property. In this way, we contribute to the classification of Maiorana-McFarland bent functions, since the number of M-subspaces of a fixed dimension is invariant under equivalence. Additionally, we give several generic methods of specifying permutations π so that f ∈ M admits a unique M-subspace. Most notably, using the knowledge about M-subspaces, we show that using the bent 4-concatenation of four suitably chosen Maiorana-McFarland bent functions on Fn−2 2, one can in a generic manner generate bent functions on Fn2 outside the completed Maiorana-McFarland class M# for any even n ≥ 8. Remarkably, with our construction methods, it is possible to obtain inequivalent bent functions on F82 not stemming from the two primary classes, the partial spread class PS and M. In this way, we contribute to a better understanding of the origin of bent functions in eight variables, since only a small fraction of about 276 bent functions stems from PS and M, whereas their total number on F82 is approximately 2106.

Two Problems about Monomial Bent Functions

Abstract: In 2008, Langevin and Leander determined the dual function of three classes of monomial bent functions with the help of Stickelberger's theorem: Dillon, Gold and Kasami. In their paper, they proposed one very strong condition such that their method works, and showed that both Gold exponent and Kasami exponent satisfy this condition. In 2018, Pott {\em et al.} investigated the issue of vectorial functions with maximal number of bent components. They found one class of binomial functions which attains the upper bound. They also proposed an open problem regarding monomial function with maximal number of bent components. In this paper, we obtain an interesting result about the condition of Langevin and Leander, and solve the open problem of Pott {\em et al.}. Specifically, we show that: 1) for a monomial bent function over $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2k}}$, if the exponent satisfies the first part of the condition of Langevin and Leander, then it satisfies the entire condition; 2) $x^{2^k+1}$ is the only monomial function over $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2k}}$ which has maximal number of bent components. Besides, as a byproduct, we dig out a very nice property about Kloosterman sums.

Abstract:Using recent results of Keevash et al. [10] and Eberhard et al. [8] together with further new detailed techniques in combinatorics, we present constructions of two concrete families of generalized Maiorana-McFarland bent functions. Our constructions improve the lower bounds on the number of bent functions in n variables over a finite field if p is odd and n is odd in the limit as n tends to infinity. Moreover we obtain the asymptotically exact number of two dimensional vectorial Maiorana-McFarland bent functions in n variables over as n tends to infinity.

Abstract:Inspired by a recent work of Tang et al. on constructing bent functions [14, IEEE TIT, 63(1): 6149-6157, 2017], we introduce a property (Pτ) of any Boolean function that its second order derivatives vanish at any direction (ui,uj) for some τ-subset {u1,…,uτ} of $\mathbb {F}_{2^{n}}$, and then establish a link between this property and the construction of Tang et al. (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 63(10), 6149–6157 2017). It enables us to find more bent functions efficiently. We construct (at least) five new infinite families of bent functions from some known functions: the Gold’s bent functions and some quadratic non-monomial bent functions, Leander’s monomial bent functions, Canteaut-Charpin-Kyureghyan’s monomial bent functions, and the Maiorana-McFarland class of bent functions, respectively. Our result generalizes some recent works on bent functions. We also provide the corresponding dual functions in all our constructions except the quadratic non-monomial one. It also turns out that we can get new bent functions outside the Maiorana-McFarland completed class.

Abstract:We consider negabent Boolean functions that have Trace representation. We completely characterize quadratic negabent monomial functions. We show the relation between negabent functions and bent functions via a quadratic function. Using this characterization, we give infinite classes of bent-negabent Boolean functions over the finite field $\F_{2^n}$, with the maximum possible degree, $n \over 2$. These are the first ever constructions of negabent functions with trace representation that have optimal degree.
