Abstract:The optimal state-independent lower bounds for the sum of variances or deviations of observables are of significance for the growing number of experiments that reach the uncertainty limited regime. We present a framework for computing the tight uncertainty relations of variance or deviation via determining the uncertainty regions, which are formed by the tuples of two or more of quantum observables in random quantum states induced from the uniform Haar measure on the purified states. From the analytical formulae of these uncertainty regions, we present state-independent uncertainty inequalities satisfied by the sum of variances or deviations of two, three and arbitrary many observables, from which experimentally friend entanglement detection criteria are derived for bipartite and tripartite systems.

Abstract:We show how a number of well-known uncertainty principles for the Fourier transform, such as the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the Donoho–Stark uncertainty principle, and Meshulam’s nonabelian uncertainty principle, have little to do with the structure of the Fourier transform itself. Rather, all of these results follow from very weak properties of the Fourier transform (shared by numerous linear operators), namely that it is bounded as an operator L1→L∞L^1 \rightarrow L^\infty, and that it is unitary. Using a single, simple proof template, and only these (or weaker) properties, we obtain some new proofs and many generalizations of these basic uncertainty principles, to new operators and to new settings, in a completely unified way. Together with our general overview, this paper can also serve as a survey of the many facets of the phenomena known as uncertainty principles.

Abstract:This correspondence investigates the Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and windowed uncertainty principle associated with 1D fractional Hilbert transform (FRHT) and the Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle associated with two types of 2D FRHT for the first time. These uncertainty bounds are related with the transform parameters of the fractional transform. In addition, we show that the certainty bounds for the complex signals derived by FRHT are different with that of the general complex signals in most cases. The special cases of these principles in traditional domains are provided as well. These new derived uncertainty principles will enrich the ensemble of the uncertainty principle as well as providing new physical interpretation.

Abstract:A sharper uncertainty inequality which exhibits a lower bound tighter than that in the classical $N$-dimensional Heisenberg's uncertainty principle is obtained. The condition that reaches an equality relation of the uncertainty inequality is deduced. Example and simulations are carried out to illustrate that the newly derived uncertainty principle is truly sharper than the classical one. The new proposal's applications in time-frequency analysis, optical signal processing and physical optics propagation are also given.

Abstract:Uncertainty principle reveals the intrinsic differences between the classical and quantum worlds, which plays a significant role in quantum information theory. By using -absolute variance, we introduce the uncertainty of quantum channels and explore its properties. By using Cauchy–Schwarz inequality and the parallelogram law, we establish the product and summation forms of the uncertainty relations for arbitrary two quantum channels, respectively. The summation form of the uncertainty inequalities based on the -absolute variance for arbitrary N quantum channels is also investigated, and the optimal lower bounds are presented. We illustrate our results by several typical examples.

Abstract:The uncertainty principle for vector-valued functions of $ L^2({\mathbb{R}}^n, {\mathbb{R}}^m) $ with $ n\ge 2 $ are studied. We provide a stronger uncertainty principle than the existing one in literature when $ m\ge 2 $. The phase and the amplitude derivatives in the sense of the Fourier transform are considered when $ m = 1 $. Based on these definitions, a generalized uncertainty principle is given.

Abstract:By use of window functions, time-frequency analysis tools like Short Time Fourier Transform overcome a shortcoming of the Fourier Transform and enable us to study the time- frequency characteristics of signals which exhibit transient os- cillatory behavior. Since the resulting representations depend on the choice of the window functions, it is important to know how they influence the analyses. One crucial question on a window function is how accurate it permits us to analyze the signals in the time and frequency domains. In the continuous domain (for functions defined on the real line), the limit on the accuracy is well-established by the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle when the time-frequency spread is measured in terms of the variance measures. However, for the finite discrete signals (where we consider the Discrete Fourier Transform), the uncertainty relation is not as well understood. Our work fills in some of the gap in the understanding and states uncertainty relation for a subclass of finite discrete signals. Interestingly, the result is a close parallel to that of the continuous domain: the time-frequency spread measure is, in some sense, natural generalization of the variance measure in the continuous domain, the lower bound for the uncertainty is close to that of the continuous domain, and the lower bound is achieved approximately by the 'discrete Gaussians'.

Abstract:We present the uncertainty relations in terms of the symmetrized ρ-absolute variance, which generalizes the uncertainty relations for arbitrary operators (not necessarily Hermitian) to quantum channels.By employing the quantity |Uρ|(Φ) proposed by Zhang et al. (2023 Quantum Inf. Process. 22, 456), we also establish tighter uncertainty relations for quantum channels by using the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. Detailed examples are provided to illustrate the tightness of our results.

Abstract:Uncertainty principles present an important theoretical tool in signal processing, as they provide limits on the time-frequency concentration of a signal. In many real-world applications the signal domain has a complicated irregular structure that can be described by a graph. In this paper, we focus on the global uncertainty principle on graphs and propose new connections between the uncertainty bound for graph signals and graph eigenvectors delocalization. We also derive uncertainty bounds for random $d$-regular graphs and provide numerically efficient upper and lower approximations for the uncertainty bound on an arbitrary graph.

Abstract:The latest <math>N</math>-dimensional Heisenberg's uncertainty principle associated with complex-valued functions' uncertainty product in the Fourier transform domain is extended into two fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) domains. The result derived is sharper than the existing ones in the literature, giving rise to a tighter lower bound on the uncertainty product in time and <math>N</math>-dimensional FRFT domains, as well as that in two <math>N</math>-dimensional FRFT domains. Example and simulations also validate the correctness of theoretical analyses, and finally the effectiveness is illustrated by applications in the effective estimation of spreads in time–frequency analysis and optical systems analysis.

Abstract:As a foundation of quantum physics, uncertainty relations describe ultimate limit for the measurement uncertainty of incompatible observables. Traditionally, uncertainty relations are formulated by mathematical bounds for a specific state. Here we present a method for geometrically characterizing uncertainty relations as an entire area of variances of the observables, ranging over all possible input states. We find that for the pair of position and momentum operators, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle points exactly to the attainable area of the variances of position and momentum. Moreover, for finite-dimensional systems, we prove that the corresponding area is necessarily semialgebraic; in other words, this set can be represented via finite polynomial equations and inequalities, or any finite union of such sets. In particular, we give the analytical characterization of the areas of variances of (a) a pair of one-qubit observables and (b) a pair of projective observables for arbitrary dimension, and give the first experimental observation of such areas in a photonic system.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct stronger lower bounds for the variance-based uncertainty relations of two unitary operators, via the power-mean inequalities. It is proved that these bounds are tighter in any interval, compared to the bounds given by Bong et al. (Phys Rev Lett 120:230402, 2018) and by Yu et al. (Phys Rev A 100:022116, 2019). Moreover, we build descending sequences of lower bounds for the uncertainty relations of two or three unitary operators. For illustration, some explicit examples are given to show the tightness of our bounds, in both pure and mixed state cases.

Abstract:The classical uncertainty principle of harmonic analysis states that a nontrivial function and its Fourier transform cannot both be sharply localized. It plays an important role in signal processing and physics. This paper generalizes the uncertainty principle for measurable sets from complex domain to hypercomplex domain using quaternion algebras, associated with the Quaternion Fourier transform. The performance is then evaluated in signal recovery problems where there is an interplay of missing and time-limiting data.

Abstract:In this paper, the Tsallis entropy based novel uncertainty relations on vector signals and matrix signals in terms of sparse representation are deduced for the first time. These new uncertainty bounds are not only related with the entropy parameter, but also related with the vector length, the min non-zero correlation between standard orthogonal basis and the given signals, the max correlation between the two given orthogonal basis and even the eigenvalues along with eigenvectors. Especially, the relationship between uncertainty bounds and matrix eigenvalues is discussed as well, as discloses the new interesting interpretation on sparse representation. In addition, the theoretical analysis and numerical examples have been shown to verify these newly proposed uncertainty principles, e.g., under the case of special parameters of Tsallis entropy, the uncertainty bound reaches its peak value for the sparsest representation of matrix (i.e., only one eigenvalue is not zero). Moreover, various numerical relations between uncertainty bounds and Tsallis entropy parameters are shown in perceptual form, as maybe give us the possible enlightenment or guidance in future sparse representation analysis.
