Abstract:The current status of the experimental measurements and theoretical predictions of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_\mu$ is briefly reviewed. The emphasis is put on the evaluation of the hadronic contribution to $a_\mu$ as it has the largest uncertainty among all Standard Model contributions. The precision of the hadronic contribution is driven by the input e+e- data predominantly from the \pi+pi- channel. Including the latest experimental data on e+e- annihilation into hadronsfrom CMD2 and SND for the \pi+\pi- channel and BaBar for multihadron final states, the updated Standard Model prediction disagrees with the measurement dominated by BNL by 3.3 standard deviations, with the theoretical precision exceeding the experimental one.

Abstract:The E989 Muon $g-2$ Experiment at Fermilab aims to measure the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu$, to an unprecedented precision of 140 parts per billion (ppb), representing a four-fold improvement over the current best measurement, achieved at Brookhaven National Lab. There stands a greater than 3 standard deviations discrepancy between the Brookhaven measurement of $a_\mu$ and the theoretical value predicted using the Standard Model. The Fermilab experiment seeks to either resolve or confirm this discrepancy, which is suggestive of new physics interactions. To achieve the E989 target precision, the anomalous precession frequency of muons in a magnetic storage ring must be determined with a systematic uncertainty below 70\,ppb, and the average magnetic field experienced by these stored muons must be known equally well. The muon anomalous precession frequency is imprinted on the time-dependent energy distribution of decay positrons observed by 24 electromagnetic calorimeters. A suite of pulsed NMR probes continually monitors the magnetic field. This document presents the current status of the Fermilab experiment while emphasizing the ongoing analysis of the 2018 Run 1 dataset and the systematic effects that complicate it.

Abstract:In this article, we review and update implications of the muon anomalous magnetic moment (muon $g-2$) anomaly for two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDMs), which are classified according to imposed symmetries and their resulting Yukawa sector. In the minimal setup, the muon $g-2$ anomaly can be accommodated by the type-X (lepto-philic) 2HDM, flavor-aligned 2HDM (FA2HDM), muon-specific 2HDM ($\mu$2HDM), and $\mu\tau$-flavor violating 2HDM. We summarize all relevant experimental constraints from high-energy collider experiments and flavor experiments, as well as the theoretical constraints from the perturbative unitarity and vacuum stability bounds, to these 2HDMs in light of the muon $g-2$ anomaly. We clarify the available parameter spaces of these 2HDMs and investigate how to probe the remaining parameter regions in future experiments. In particular, we find that, due to the updated $B_s\to\mu^+ \mu^-$ measurement, the remaining parameter region of the FA2HDM is almost equivalent to the one of the type-X 2HDM. Furthermore, based on collider simulations, we find that the type-X 2HDM is excluded and the $\mu$2HDM scenario will be covered with the upcoming Run 3 data.

Abstract:We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant $\alpha$ and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^5)$ with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by $(m_\mu/M_W)^2$ and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^2)$ and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^3)$ the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads $a_\mu^\text{SM}=116\,591\,810(43)\times 10^{-11}$ and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7$\sigma$. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. This and the prospects to further reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the near future-which are also discussed here-make this quantity one of the most promising places to look for evidence of new physics.

Abstract:The ideas and formulas presented in the article will help to bring together the theoretical predictions for the anomalous magnetic moment of muon and the results of the "Muon g-2" experiment. In doing so, we are discussing the new effect exclusively within the Standard Model. In quantum physics a state with spin perpendicular to a magnetic field can be expressed as a superposition of energy eigenstates with spins parallel and antiparallel to the field: the resultant spin precession is due to the energy difference between the two eigenstates. If the state, like the muon, is unstable and can decay, it will have a natural energy spread. As a result the frequency of the spin precession can vary. For a constant magnetic field the measured spin precession velocity will be spread according to the Lorentzian distribution with width $\left(\gamma\tau\right)^{-1}$, for Lorentz gamma factor $\gamma=E/ m$, and particle lifetime $\tau$. Although the true mean and variance of a Lorentzian distribution is undefined, the latter can be estimated by the maximum likelihood method to be ${2 \over N (\gamma \tau)^2}$, twice that of a normal distribution. Thus, the statistical error on the anomalous magnetic moment in reality should turn out to be wider than with $\chi^2$ analysis of the experiment.

Abstract:Abstract The new experiment data of muon g − 2 is reported by the workers at Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). Combined with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 result, the departure from the standard model prediction is about 4.2σ. It strengthens our faith in the new physics. U(1)XSSM is the U(1) extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, where we study the electroweak corrections to the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of muon from the one-loop diagrams and some two-loop diagrams possessing important contributions. These two-loop diagrams include Barr-Zee type, rainbow type and diamond type. The virtual supersymmetric particles in these two-loop diagrams are chargino, scalar neutrino, neutralino, scalar lepton, which are supposed not very heavy to make relatively large corrections. We obtain the Wilson coefficients of the dimension 6 operators inducing the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of muon. The numerical results can reach 25 × 10−10 and even larger.

Abstract:The Fermilab Muon $g-2$ experiment measures the muon anomalous magnetic moment with high precision. Together with recent improvements on the theory front, the first results of the experiment confirm the long-standing discrepancy between the experimental measurements and the Standard Model predictions. The observed value of $a_\mu({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54) \times 10^{-11} ~ (\text{0.46\,ppm})$, combined with the previous experimental measurement, results in a discrepancy of $ (251 \pm 59)\times 10^{-11}$ with the theoretical prediction, corresponding to $4.2 ~\sigma$. This note presents the first results, the current status and the future prospects of the Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab.

Abstract:The muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory measures the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_\mu$, very precisely. This measurement tests the Standard Model. The analysis for the data collected in 2000 (a $\mu^+$ run) is completed and the accuracy on $a_\mu$ is improved to 0.7 ppm, including statistical and systematic errors. The data analysis was performed blindly between the precession frequency and the field analysis groups in order to prevent a possible bias in the $a_\mu$ result. The result is $a_{\mu}({\rm exp}) = 11~659~204(7)(5) \times 10^{-10}$ (0.7 ppm). This paper features a detailed description of one of the four analyses and an update of the theory.

Abstract:We briefly review the current status of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. Based on various model calculations in the literature, we obtain the estimate a_{mu}^{HLbL} = (102 \pm 39) x 10^{-11}. Recent developments including more model-independent approaches using dispersion relations and lattice QCD, that could lead to a more reliable estimate, are also discussed.

Abstract:A bstract The difference between the updated experimental result on the muon anomalous magnetic dipole moment and the corresponding theoretical prediction of the standard model on that is about 4 . 2 standard deviations. In this work, we calculate the muon anomalous MDM at the two-loop level in the supersymmetric B − L extension of the standard model. Considering the experimental constraints on the lightest Higgs boson mass, Higgs boson decay modes h → γγ , WW , ZZ , $$ b\overline{b} $$ b b ̄ , $$ \tau \overline{\tau} $$ τ τ ̄ , B rare decay $$ \overline{B} $$ B ̄ → X s γ , and the transition magnetic moments of Majorana neutrinos, we analyze the theoretical predictions of the muon anomalous magnetic dipole moment in the B − L supersymmetric model. The numerical analyses indicate that the tension between the experimental measurement and the standard model prediction is remedied in the B − L supersymmetric model.

Abstract:We summarize recent developments in the Standard-Model evaluation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_\mu$, both in the hadronic-light-by-light and hadronic-vacuum-polarization contributions. The current situation for the latter is puzzling as we are confronted with multiple discrepancies that are not yet understood. We present updated fits of a dispersive representation of the pion vector form factor to the new CMD-3 data set and quantify the tensions with the other high-statistics $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$ experiments in the contribution to $a_\mu$ in the energy range up to 1 GeV, as well as in the corresponding contribution to the intermediate Euclidean window.

Abstract:We analyze the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $g-2$ in the $\mu\nu$SSM. This $R$-parity violating model solves the $\mu$ problem reproducing simultaneously neutrino data, only with the addition of right-handed neutrinos. In the framework of the $\mu\nu$SSM, light left muon-sneutrino and wino masses can be naturally obtained driven by neutrino physics. This produces an increase of the dominant chargino-sneutrino loop contribution to muon $g-2$, solving the gap between the theoretical computation and the experimental data. To analyze the parameter space, we sample the $\mu\nu$SSM using a likelihood data-driven method, paying special attention to reproduce the current experimental data on neutrino and Higgs physics, as well as flavor observables such as $B$ and $\mu$ decays. We then apply the constraints from LHC searches for events with multi-leptons + MET on the viable regions found. They can probe these regions through chargino-chargino, chargino-neutralino and neutralino-neutralino pair production. We conclude that significant regions of the parameter space of the $\mu\nu$SSM can explain muon $g-2$ data.

Abstract:Extensions of the Standard Model featuring excited fermions present an interesting framework that motivates the search for exotic particles at the LHC. Additionally, these extensions offer potential explanations for the muon's anomalous magnetic moment and other precision observables, shedding light on the energy scale and key parameters of the new theory. Our analysis focuses on the one-loop radiative correction originating from excited lepton doublet and triplet states using the effective Lagrangian approach. The bounds derived from the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly can be complemented with the ones arising from other observables like the electroweak precision observable $\Delta \rho$ and the signals from direct LHC searches to constraint the effective theory. Our results suggest that the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly can be addressed within a very narrow region of the effective theory scale. Consequently, this imposes indirect constraints on the parameter space of excited fermions.

Abstract:The hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is parametrized by using the quark-resonance model formulated in \cite{QR}. In this context a recent prediction obtained within the ENJL model \cite{RAF} can be affected by two additional contributions: the next to leading corrections in the inverse cutoff expansion and the gluonic corrections. Motivated by the necessity of reaching a highly accurate theoretical prediction of the hadronic contribution to the muon g-2, we study in detail both the effects.

Abstract:We study the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $g_\mu - 2 \equiv 2 a_\mu$, in the context of supersymmetric models beyond the CMSSM, where the unification of either the gaugino masses $M_{1,2,3}$ or sfermion and Higgs masses is relaxed, taking into account the measured mass of the Higgs boson, $m_H$, the cosmological dark matter density and the direct detection rate. We find that the model with non-unified gaugino masses can make a contribution $\Delta a_\mu\sim 20 \times 10^{-10}$ to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, for example if $M_{1,2} \sim 600$ GeV and $M_3\sim 8$ TeV. The model with non-universal sfermion and Higgs masses can provide even larger $\Delta a_\mu \sim 24 \times 10^{-10}$ if the sfermion masses for the first and the second generations are $ \sim 400 $ GeV and that of the third is $ \sim 8 $ TeV. We discuss the prospects for collider searches for supersymmetric particles in specific benchmark scenarios illustrating these possibilities, focusing in particular on the prospects for detecting the lighter smuon and the lightest neutralino.

Abstract:I review the status of lattice QCD calculations of the hadronic contributions to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, focussing on the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution which dominates the uncertainty of the Standard Model prediction.This quantity exhibits a tension between recent lattice QCD results and the traditional data-driven dispersive method. I discuss the implications for the running of the electromagnetic coupling and the consistency of global fits using electroweak precision data.

Abstract:The experimental uncertainty on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon has been significantly reduced with the recent results of the Fermilab $g-2$ experiment, and a further reduction is expected in the near future. The precision of the Standard Model prediction needs to improve correspondingly to increase the sensitivity of tests for physics beyond the Standard Model. The largest uncertainty is due to contributions from the strong interaction, in particular the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution. Lattice QCD calculations have the potential to provide precise ab initio predictions of the HVP contribution. We review the state of lattice QCD calculations, focusing on the dominant sources of uncertainty that need to be controlled to provide results with sub-percent precision.
