Abstract:In this work we establish the optimal regularity for solutions to the fully nonlinear thin obstacle problem. In particular, we show the existence of an optimal exponent $\alpha_F$ such that $u$ is $C^{1,\alpha_F}$ on either side of the obstacle. In order to do that, we prove the uniqueness of blow-ups at regular points, as well as an expansion for the solution there. Finally, we also prove that if the operator is rotationally invariant, then $\alpha_F\ge \frac12$ and the solution is always $C^{1,1/2}$.

Abstract:We establish the existence, uniqueness, and $W^{1,2,p}$-regularity of solutions to fully-nonlinear, parabolic obstacle problems when the obstacle is the pointwise supremum of functions in $W^{1,2,p}$ and the nonlinear operator is required only to be measurable in the state and time variables. In particular, the results hold for all convex obstacles. Applied to stopping problems, they provide general conditions under which a decision maker never stops at a convex kink of the stopping payoff. The proof relies on new $W^{1,2,p}$-estimates for obstacle problems when the obstacle is the maximum of finitely many functions in $W^{1,2,p}$.

Abstract:We prove a higher regularity result for the free boundary in the obstacle problem for the fractional heat operator via a higher order boundary Harnack estimate. As a consequence, we show that if the obstacle is Hm+beta, then the free boundary is Hm-1+alpha near non-degenerate free boundary points for some 0 < alpha <= beta. Abstract:We study the obstacle problem for parabolic operators of the type ∂t+L , where L is an elliptic integro‐differential operator of order 2s, such as (−Δ)s , in the supercritical regime s∈(0,12) . The best result in this context was due to Caffarelli and Figalli, who established the Cx1,s regularity of solutions for the case L=(−Δ)s , the same regularity as in the elliptic setting. Here we prove for the first time that solutions are actually more regular than in the elliptic case. More precisely, we show that they are C1, 1 in space and time, and that this is optimal. We also deduce the C1,α regularity of the free boundary. Moreover, at all free boundary points (x0,t0) , we establish the following expansion: (u−φ)(x0+x,t0+t)=c0(t−a·x)+2+O(t2+α+|x|2+α), with c0>0 , α>0 and a∈Rn .

Abstract:We prove some regularity results for a priori bounded local minimizers of non-autonomous integral functionals of the form $$\mathcal{F}(v,\Omega)=\int_\Omega F(x,Dv)dx,$$ under the constraint $v \ge \psi$ a.e. in $\Omega$, where $\psi$ is a fixed obstacle function. Assuming that the coefficients of the partial map $x \mapsto D_\xi F(x,\xi)$ satisfy a suitable Sobolev regularity, we are able to obtain higher differentiability and Lipschitz continuity results for the local minimizers.

Abstract:We analyse the obstacle problem for the nonlocal parabolic operator where , , and is a nonlocal lower order diffusion operator with respect to the fractional Laplace operator . This model appears in the study of American options pricing when the stochastic process governing the stock price is assumed to be a purely jump process. We study the existence and the uniqueness of solutions to the obstacle problem, and we prove optimal regularity of solutions in space, and almost optimal regularity in time.

Abstract:We study the regularity of the interface between the disjoint supports of a pair of nonnegative subharmonic functions. The portion of the interface where the Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman (ACF) monotonicity formula is asymptotically positive forms an $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$-rectifiable set. Moreover, for $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$-a.e. such point, the two functions have unique blowups, i.e. their Lipschitz rescalings converge in $W^{1,2}$ to a pair of nondegenerate truncated linear functions whose supports meet at the approximate tangent plane. The main tools used include the Naber-Valtorta framework and our recent result establishing a sharp quantitative remainder term in the ACF monotonicity formula. We also give applications of our results to free boundary problems.

Abstract:We establish a quasi-monotonicity formula {for an intrinsic frequency function related to solutions to} thin obstacle problems with zero obstacle driven by quadratic energies with Sobolev $W^{1,p}$ coefficients, with $p$ bigger than the space dimension. From this we deduce several regularity and structural properties of the corresponding free boundaries at those distinguished points with finite order of contact with the obstacle. In particular, we prove the rectifiability {and the local finiteness of the Minkowski content} of the whole free boundary in the case of Lipschitz coefficients.

Abstract:In the previous work [Interfaces Free Bound., 19, 351-369, 2017], de Queiroz and Shahgholian investigated the regularity of the solution to the obstacle problem with singular logarithmic forcing term \begin{equation*} -\Delta u = \log u \, \chi_{\{u>0\}} \quad \text{in} \quad \Omega, \end{equation*} where $\chi_{\{u>0\}}$ denotes the characteristic function of the set $\{u>0\}$ and $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \geq 2$) is a smooth bounded domain. The solution solves the minimum problem for the following functional, \begin{equation*} \mathscr{J}(u):=\int_{\Omega}\left(\frac{|\nabla u|^2}{2}-u^+ (\log u-1)\right) \, dx, \end{equation*} where $u^+=\max{\{0,u\}}$. In this paper, based on the regularity of the solution, we establish the $C^{1,\alpha}$ regularity of the free boundary $\Omega \cap \partial\{u>0\}$ near the regular points for some $\alpha\in (0,1)$. The logarithmic forcing term becomes singular near the free boundary $\Omega\cap\partial\{u>0\}$ and lacks the scaling properties, which are very crucial in studying the regularity of the free boundary. Despite these challenges, we draw inspiration for our overall strategy from the "epiperimetric inequality" method introduced by Weiss in 1999 [Invent. Math., 138, 23-50, 1999]. Central to our approach is the introduction of a new type of energy contraction. This allows us to achieve energy decay, which in turn ensures the uniqueness of the blow-up limit, and subsequently leads to the regularity of the free boundary.

Abstract:An optimal control problem of the obstacle for an elliptic variational inequality is considered, in which the obstacle is regarded as the control. To get the regularity of the optimal pair, a new related control problem is introduced. By proving the existence of an optimal pair to such a new control problem, the regularity of the optimal pair to the original problem is obtained. It turns out that the regularity obtained is sharp in general. Some other interesting properties of the optimal pair are also established.
