Abstract:We show that signed weak solutions to obstacle problems for porous medium type equations with Cauchy-Dirichlet boundary data are continuous up to the parabolic boundary, provided that the obstacle and boundary data are continuous. This result seems to be new even for signed solutions to the (obstacle free) Cauchy-Dirichlet problem to the singular porous medium equation, which is retrieved as a special case.

Abstract:We study the obstacle problem for parabolic operators of the type ∂t+L , where L is an elliptic integro‐differential operator of order 2s, such as (−Δ)s , in the supercritical regime s∈(0,12) . The best result in this context was due to Caffarelli and Figalli, who established the Cx1,s regularity of solutions for the case L=(−Δ)s , the same regularity as in the elliptic setting. Here we prove for the first time that solutions are actually more regular than in the elliptic case. More precisely, we show that they are C1, 1 in space and time, and that this is optimal. We also deduce the C1,α regularity of the free boundary. Moreover, at all free boundary points (x0,t0) , we establish the following expansion: (u−φ)(x0+x,t0+t)=c0(t−a·x)+2+O(t2+α+|x|2+α), with c0>0 , α>0 and a∈Rn .

Abstract:We prove the existence and uniqueness of solution of the obstacle problem for quasilinear Stochastic PDEs with non-homogeneous second order operator. Our method is based on analytical technics coming from the parabolic potential theory. The solution is expressed as a pair (u, v) where u is a predictable continuous process which takes values in a proper Sobolev space and v is a random regular measure satisfying minimal Skohorod condition. Moreover, we establish a maximum principle for local solutions of such class of stochastic PDEs. The proofs are based on a version of ItO's formula and estimates for the positive part of a local solution which is non-positive on the lateral boundary.

Abstract:We establish the existence, uniqueness, and $W^{1,2,p}$-regularity of solutions to fully-nonlinear, parabolic obstacle problems when the obstacle is the pointwise supremum of functions in $W^{1,2,p}$ and the nonlinear operator is required only to be measurable in the state and time variables. In particular, the results hold for all convex obstacles. Applied to stopping problems, they provide general conditions under which a decision maker never stops at a convex kink of the stopping payoff. The proof relies on new $W^{1,2,p}$-estimates for obstacle problems when the obstacle is the maximum of finitely many functions in $W^{1,2,p}$.

Abstract:For equations of order two with the Dirichlet boundary condition, as the Laplace problem, the Stokes and the Navier-Stokes systems, perforated domains were only studied when the distance between the holes dε is equal to or much larger than the size of the holes ε. Such a diluted porous medium is interesting because it contains some cases where we have a non-negligible effect on the solution when (ε, dε) → (0, 0). Smaller distances were avoided for mathematical reasons and for these large distances, the geometry of the holes does not affect or rarely affect the asymptotic result. Very recently, it was shown for the 2D-Euler equations that a porous medium is non-negligible only for inter-holes distances much smaller than the size of the holes. For this result, the boundary regularity of holes plays a crucial role, and the permeability criterion depends on the geometry of the lateral boundary. In this paper, we relax slightly the regularity condition, allowing a corner, and we note that a line of irregular obstacles cannot slow down a perfect fluid in any regime such that ε ln dε → 0.

Abstract:We consider the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations on a bounded domain $\Omega$ with $C^4$ boundary. We prove that if the velocity field $u \in C^{0,\alpha} (\Omega)$ with $\alpha > 0$ (where we are omitting the time dependence), it follows that the corresponding pressure $p$ of a weak solution to the Euler equations belongs to the Hölder space $C^{0, \alpha} (\Omega)$. We also prove that away from the boundary $p$ has $C^{0,2\alpha}$ regularity. In order to prove these results we use a local parametrisation of the boundary and a very weak formulation of the boundary condition for the pressure of the weak solution, as was introduced in [C. Bardos and E.S. Titi, Philos. Trans. Royal Soc. A, 380 (2022), 20210073], which is different than the commonly used boundary condition for classical solutions of the Euler equations. Moreover, we provide an explicit example illustrating the necessity of this new very weak formulation of the boundary condition for the pressure. Furthermore, we also provide a rigorous derivation of this new formulation of the boundary condition for weak solutions of the Euler equations. This result is of importance for the proof of the first half of the Onsager Conjecture, the sufficient conditions for energy conservation of weak solutions to the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations in bounded domains. In particular, the results in this paper remove the need for separate regularity assumptions on the pressure in the proof of the Onsager conjecture.

Abstract:We establish a quasi-monotonicity formula {for an intrinsic frequency function related to solutions to} thin obstacle problems with zero obstacle driven by quadratic energies with Sobolev $W^{1,p}$ coefficients, with $p$ bigger than the space dimension. From this we deduce several regularity and structural properties of the corresponding free boundaries at those distinguished points with finite order of contact with the obstacle. In particular, we prove the rectifiability {and the local finiteness of the Minkowski content} of the whole free boundary in the case of Lipschitz coefficients.

Abstract:We prove the local Hölder regularity of weak solutions to the mixed local nonlocal parabolic equation of the form \begin{equation*} u_t-\Delta u+\text{P.V.}\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}} {\frac{u(x,t)-u(y,t)}{{\left|x-y\right|}^{n+2s}}}dy=0, \end{equation*} where $0<s<1$; for every exponent $\alpha_0\in(0,1)$. Here, $\Delta$ is the usual Laplace operator. Next, we show that the gradients of weak solutions are also $\alpha$-Hölder continuous for some $\alpha\in (0,1)$. Our approach is purely analytic and it is based on perturbation techniques.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem of the porous medium type reaction-diffusion equation \begin{equation*} \partial_t\rho=\Delta\rho^m+\rho g(\rho),\quad (x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^n\times \mathbb{R}_+,\quad n\geq2,\quad m>1, \end{equation*} where $g$ is the given monotonic decreasing function with the density critical threshold $\rho_M>0$ satisfying $g(\rho_M)=0$. We prove that the pressure $P:=\frac{m}{m-1}\rho^{m-1}$ in $L_{loc}^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ tends to the pressure critical threshold $P_M:=\frac{m}{m-1}(\rho_M)^{m-1}$ at the time decay rate $(1+t)^{-1}$. If the initial density $\rho(x,0)$ is compactly supported, we justify that the support $\{x: \rho(x,t)>0\}$ of the density $\rho$ expands exponentially in time. Furthermore, we show that there exists a time $T_0>0$ such that the pressure $P$ is Lipschitz continuous for $t>T_0$, which is the optimal (sharp) regularity of the pressure, and the free surface $\partial \{(x,t): \rho(x,t)>0\}\cap \{t>T_0\}$ is locally Lipschitz continuous. In addition, under the same initial assumptions of compact support, we verify that the free boundary $\partial \{(x,t): \rho(x,t)>0\}\cap \{t>T_0\}$ is a local $C^{1,\alpha}$ surface.

Abstract:A broad class of possibly non-unique generalized kinetic solutions to hyperbolic-parabolic PDEs is introduced. Optimal regularity estimates in time and space for such solutions to nonlocal, and spatially inhomogeneous variants of the porous medium equation are shown in the scale of Sobolev spaces. The optimality of these results is shown by comparison to the nonlocal Barenblatt solution. The regularity results are used in order to obtain existence of generalized kinetic solutions.
