Abstract:Cotton fiber functionalized with tetraethylenepentamine and chitosan (CTPC) was prepared and used as absorbents for the removal of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cr(III) ions from aqueous solution. The functionalized materials (CTPC) were characterized by SEM/EDX, FTIR, BET and XRD to confirm the characterization and structural changes of fibers before and after the modifying process. The adsorption performance of CTPC was investigated with different pH, contact time and initial concentration of three kinds of metal ions. Results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity was 81.97 mg g(-1) for Cu(II), 123.46 mg g(-1) for Pb(II) and 72.99 mg g(-1) for Cr (III) based on the Langmuir isotherm model at optimal pH (5.0). Adsorption kinetics of CTPC fibers for Cu(II), Pb (II), and Cr(III) ions followed the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption-desorption experiments demonstrated that CTPC showed better stability, and CTPC would be an effective and practical material for the treatment and recycling of heavy metal ions in the wastewater.

Abstract:Due to its valuable compounds, food waste has been gaining attention in different applications, such as life quality and environment. Combined with circular economy requirements, a valorization method for waste, especially banana waste, was to convert them into adsorbents with advanced properties. The banana waste, after thermal treatment, was used with high removal performances (100%) for the removal of heavy metals, such as Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn, but their small particle size makes them very hard to recover and reuse. For this reason, a biopolymeric matrix was used to incorporate the banana waste. The matrix was chosen for its remarkable properties, such as low cost, biodegradability, low carbon footprint, and reduced environmental impact. In this research, different types of materials (simple banana peel ash BPA and combined with biopolymeric matrix, ALG–BPA, CS–BPA) were prepared, characterized, and tested. The materials were characterized by means of attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and tested for the removal of metal ions from synthetic solutions using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The ALG–BPA material proved to be the most efficient in the removal of heavy metal ions from synthetic solution, reaching even 100% metal removal for Cr, Fe, Pb, and Zn, while the CS-based materials were the least efficient, presenting the best values for Cr and Fe ions with a removal efficiency of 34.14% and 28.38%, respectively. By adding BPA to CS, the adsorption properties of the material were slightly improved, but also only for Cr and Fe ions, to 37.09% and 57.78%.

Novel Sustainable Adsorbents Prepared by Banana/Pomegranate Peels via EDTA Grafting for Effective Removal of Cd(II), Co(II), Mn(II), and Ni(II) from Sewage System

Abstract:Biosorbents prepared by agricultural waste for eliminating heavy metal ions from sewage systems have gained widespread attention due to the high efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. In this study, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was grafted onto banana/pomegranate peels to generate two adsorbents, EDTA@BP and EDTA@PP. They were charactered with excellent adsorption capabilities of 46.30 mg/g, 31.85 mg/g, 27.25 mg/g, and 55.25 mg/g for EDTA@BP when removing Cd(II), Co(II), Mn(II), and Ni(II) from aqueous solution, and 86.96 mg/g, 53.19 mg/g, 40.98 mg/g, 68.49 mg/g for EDTA@PP, respectively. The adsorption process was completed within 5 min and could be well described by Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Surface characterization of adsorbents using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that EDTA improved metal ion binding performance by introducing more surface oxygen-containing groups, and the adsorption process was dominated by ion exchange and complexation. This study showed the feasibility of EDTA grafting for converting peel biomass into adsorbents with excellent performance to deal with aqueous heavy metal pollutants.

Abstract:Here, we propose a green and sustainable 3D porous aerogel based on citrus peel (CP), chitosan (CS), and bentonite (BT). This aerogel is prepared through a simple sol-gel and freeze-drying process and is designed for efficient capture of Cu(II) ions from water matrices. CCBA-2, with its abundance of active binding sites, exhibits an impressive Cu(II) adsorption yield of 861.58 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics follow the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. In the presence of coexisting mixed-metal ions, CCBA-2 demonstrates a significantly higher selectivity coefficient (KdCu = 1138.5) for removing Cu(II) ions compared to other toxic metal ions. Furthermore, the adsorption of Cu(II) ions by CCBA-2 is not significantly affected by coexisting cations/anions, ionic strength, organic matter, or different water matrices. Dynamic fixed-bed column experiments show that the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions reaches 377.4 mg/g, and the Yoon-Nelson model accurately describes the adsorption process and breakthrough curve. Through experiments, FTIR, and XPS analyses, we propose a reasonable binding mechanism between CCBA-2 and metal cations, involving electrostatic attraction and chemical chelation between Cu(II) and the functional groups of the aerogel. CCBA-2 saturated with Cu(II) ions can be successfully regenerated by elution with 1 M HNO3, with only a slight decrease in adsorption efficiency (5.3%) after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles. Therefore, CCBA-2 offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly material that can be considered as a viable alternative for the green and efficient removal of toxic Cu(II) ions from wastewater.

Abstract:To address the severe pollution caused by heavy metals, adsorbents have attracted considerable attention based on the idea of energy conservation, emission reduction, and waste utilization. In this work, magnetic nanocomposites were employed as an adequate source for Cu2+ adsorption. Fe3O4 nanoparticles were modified using branched polyethyleneimine and biochar produced from banana peels. The magnetic nanocomposites (BPB/Fe3O4/BPEI) were prepared by chemical coprecipitation. The resulting adsorbents were characterized using SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, and FTIR, and it was also indicated that BPB/Fe3O4/BPEI was successfully prepared by stepwise modification with BPB, Fe3O4, and branched polyethyleneimine. VSM result shows the BPB/Fe3O4/BPEI exhibit a paramagnetic behavior (21.22 emu/g). A mesoporous structure can be confirmed by BET analysis (BPB/Fe3O4/BPEI: 68.72 m2/g). The effects of contact time, pH, concentration of copper ions, and adsorbent dose on the efficiency of copper ion adsorption were investigated. The optimal adsorption efficiencies for BPB(81.99%), Fe3O4(20.18%), BPB/Fe3O4(82.15%), Fe3O4/BPEI(87.37%), and BPB/Fe3O4/BPEI(99.46%) were determined. Furthermore, D-R, Temkin, Freundlich, Langmuir, Redlich-Peterson, Toth, Sips, and Hill isotherm models, Weber-Morris intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich, PSO, PFO, and Boyd kinetic models were conducted to better understand the removal process. The BPB/Fe3O4/BPEI adsorbents fit the PSO kinetic model and the Sips isotherm model best. The maximum capacities for Cu2+ adsorption with BPB, Fe3O4, BPB/Fe3O4, Fe3O4/BPEI, and BPB/Fe3O4/BPEI are determined to be 15.14 mg/g, 2.75 mg/g, 24.65 mg/g, 32.66 mg/g, and 73.23 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of other metal ions and the reusability of BPB/Fe3O4/BPEI were studied, indicating that BPB/Fe3O4/BPEI has good stability even in the presence of other influential heavy metal ions in solution and can be effectively reused for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:To date, highly toxic heavy metal ions from wastewater seriously deteriorate the aquatic environment safety. This study proposes an adsorbent that can be adopted to remove heavy metal ions by combining environmentally friendly cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), sodium alginate (SA), and amino-rich polyethyleneimine using a ferric chloride- and glutaraldehyde-mediated crosslinking process and yielding a porous hollow bead (CS-Fe@PEI). The bead has a hollow porous structure according to SEM and a high nitrogen content of 13.85 wt% with numerous active adsorption sites, which are beneficial to the adsorption of heavy metal ions. Chromium was chosen as the main model pollutant for batch adsorption experiments. CS-Fe@PEI has excellent adsorption capacity of 526.32 mg/g for Cr(VI) at 298 K, which conforms with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. The stable hollow structure allowed the regeneration of the CS-Fe@PEI beads for more than six cycles after Cr(VI) adsorption. According to FT-IR, Zeta, and XPS analyses, the beads effectively adsorbed the pollutants by electrostatic interaction, reducing the hypertoxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Furthermore, the beads also possessed a superior adsorption capacity for heavy metal cations (Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II)). These results demonstrated that the fabricated CS-Fe@PEI beads were an efficient and reusable adsorbent, with a high potential for removing heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Developing high-efficient and easy-to-recover adsorbents for the removal of toxic metals in water is imperative, although it poses a huge challenge. In this study, a sulfur-functionalized metal-organic framework was incorporated into Ca-alginate/polyacrylic acid granulates as an effective adsorbent ( abbr. CPZ-SH) for Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ removal. The physicochemical properties of the obtained CPZ-SH were determined by the integrated characterization techniques (e.g., FTIR, XRD, and SEM). The environmental effects of solution pH, typical background cations (K + , Na + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ ), and dissolved organic matter were assessed to determine the adsorption behaviors of the granulates. Time-dependent adsorption kinetics suggested that the adsorption process was dominated by an intraparticle diffusion procedure. CPZ-SH exhibited maximum adsorption capacities of 75.8 and 48.4 mg g –1 at 30 °C, and excellent adsorption reusability with Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ adsorption efficiencies over 96.0% and 85.1% after 10 cycles, respectively. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) demonstrated that the functional groups (thiol, carboxyl, and hydroxyl) played a crucial role in adsorption processes. The findings provided an effective strategy to construct nanostructured metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into granulates as recyclable adsorbents and enable heavy metal removal from water.

Abstract:Design and synthesis of environmentally friendly adsorbents with high adsorption capacities are urgently needed to control pollution of water resources. In this work, a calcium ion-induced approach was used to synthesize sodium alginate fibroid hydrogel (AFH). The as-prepared AFH has certain mechanical strength, and the mechanical strength is enhanced especially after the adsorption of heavy metal ions, which is very convenient for the recovery. AFH exhibited excellent adsorption performances for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions and displayed very high saturated adsorption capacities (Qe) of 315.92 mg·g−1 (Cu2+), 232.35 mg·g−1 (Cd2+), and 465.22 mg·g−1 (Pb2+) with optimized pH values (3.0–4.0) and temperature (303 K). The study of isotherms and kinetics indicated that adsorption processes of heavy metal ions fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir model. Pb2+ was found to have the strongest competitiveness among the three heavy metal ions. Thus, AFH has great application prospects in the field of heavy metal ions removing from wastewater.

Abstract:Heavy metals have previously been removed from aqueous media using activated carbon as an adsorbent but due to its high cost, researchers are working to develop low-cost adsorbents from agricultural products and by-products. In this research, fresh banana peels were utilised as raw materials, and they were subsequently carbonised using the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method to generate an efficient hydrochar adsorbent with the participation of potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. Pure standard of Fe, Mn and Zn were used as the stock solution for the heavy metal ions removal. The catalysis of KOH with concentration ranging from 0% to 50% by weight were utilized as the reaction media. Parameters including the dosage, metal concentrations, contact time and pH value were carefully investigated. According to the results of concentrations of heavy metals before and after adsorption obtained from AAS, hydrochar produced in 30%wt KOH exhibit the most adsorption capacity and Zn removal exhibit the highest adsorption among all three metal ions used at 83% removal efficiency. The presence of a high number of oxygen functional groups (OFG) is confirmed by FTIR findings, that influence the adsorption reaction. As a result, chemically modified banana peels can be used as a low-cost alternative to other expensive adsorbents for heavy metal removal, and HTC could be a viable technique for producing low-cost adsorbents.
Temperature Regulated Adsorption and Desorption of Heavy Metals to A-MIL-121: Mechanisms and the Role of Exchangeable Protons

Abstract:Adsorption is a viable technology to remove trace heavy metals from wastewater, but regeneration of adsorbents in an economic and environmentally friendly manner often represents a limiting factor of its application. Compared with traditional strong acid desorption, developing a chemical-free method is of great significance to both economic and the environmental welfare. Herein, we synthesized a novel thermoresponsive absorbent, A-MIL-121, which could effectively remove trace Cu(II) (> 95 %) from a highsalinity ([Na+]/[Cu2+] = 20000) water at normal temperature. At elevated temperature, A-MIL-121 could quickly and efficiently desorb Cu(II), with over 90% desorption rate at 80 degrees C within 3 h. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis revealed that two types of -COOH groups existed in the material. One was in free form and acted as the sites for Cu(II) adsorption; the other was in dimer connected by two H-bonds, which cleaved at elevated temperature. As a result, massive exchangeable protons were released to the solution, which caused the desorption of Cu(II). Similar temperature dependent adsorptiondesorption behavior was also found to other heavy metals, such as Cd2+, Pb2+, Ni2+. No significant capacity loss was observed after 10 successive adsorption-desorption cycles. Finally, Column experiments using a real copper electroplating wastewater showed that a total of similar to 1650 mL of clean water was generated before breakthrough (Cu2+ < 0.5 mg/L), while less than 45 mL of 80 degrees C water was used for regeneration. This study indicates the potential of A-MIL-121 as a novel green adsorbent to address trace heavy metals in wastewater. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Rapid global industrialization has worsened the heavy metal contamination of aquatic ecosystems globally. In this study, green, ultrafine cellulose-based porous nanofibrous membranes for efficient heavy metal removal were obtained by incorporating chitosan (CS) and using conventional and core–shell electrospinning ways. The relationship between the parameters of the electrospinning solution, the micro-morphology and porosity, the chemically active sites, the thermal stability, and the adsorption performance of the biocomposite nanofibrous membranes were analyzed. The adsorption effects of the copper ions, including the initial concentration, solution pH, and interaction time, were investigated. The results show that the average diameters of the conventional and core–shell ultrafine nanofibers with 50% and 30% CS loading are 56.22 nm and 37.28 nm, respectively. The core–shell cellulose acetate (CA)/CS biocomposite nanofibrous membranes showed the weaker thermal stability with a 48.2 °C lower maximum thermal decomposition temperature and induced the surface aggregation of more copper ions compared to the conventional one. A more uniform distribution of the chemical adsorption sites is obtained by conventional single-nozzle electrospinning than by core–shell electrospinning, which effectively promotes the adsorption performance of copper ions and decreases the surface shrinkage of the nanofibrous membranes during adsorption. The 30% CS conventional nanofibrous membranes at an aqueous solution pH of 5 showed the optimum adsorption capacity of copper ions (86.4 mg/g). The smart combination of renewable biomass with effective chemical adsorption sites, electrospinning technology that produces an interwoven porous structure, and an adsorption method with low cost and facile operation shows a promising prospect for water treatment.

Modified Water Hyacinth Functionalized with Citric Acid as an Effective and Inexpensive Adsorbent for Heavy Metal-Ion Removal

Abstract:Water hyacinth was modified by citric acid to prepare a carboxyl-functionalized water hyacinth (CWH) adsorption material. The effects of pH, contact time, amount of the adsorbent, initial concentration, and temperature on the adsorption of heavy metal ions were investigated. In the experimental study, the optimal pH values of Ni2+, Cu2+, and Cr6+ in the CWH adsorption solution were 7.5, 6.0, and 5.0; the optimum contact times were 300, 180, and 120 min; and the optimum adsorbent dosages were 0.65, 0.50, and 0.40 g, respectively. The adsorption processes of Ni2+, Cu2+, and Cr6+ by CWH are in accordance with the quasi-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, with the maximum adsorption capacity being 59.64, 77.98, and 96.89 mg/g, respectively. The thermodynamic model shows that it is an endothermic spontaneous process. Even after five adsorption–desorption cycles, the removal ratios of Ni2+, Cu2+, and Cr6+ by CWH remained about 55.23, 65.63, and 71.46%, respectively. The structure of the water hyacinth before and after modification was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate that the surface of CWH was rough and the number of microporous increased and water hyacinth has been successfully carboxylated. The abovementioned results indicate that CWH can be used as an environmentally friendly and economical adsorbent.

Abstract:In this study, sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was treated with sodium hydroxide and bleached to separate the non-cellulose components to obtain cellulose (CE) fibres. Cross-linked cellulose–poly(sodium acrylic acid) hydrogel (CE–PAANa) was successfully synthesised via simple free-radical graft-polymerisation to remove heavy metal ions. The structure and morphology of the hydrogel display an open interconnected porous structure on the surface of the hydrogel. Various factors influencing batch adsorption capacity, including pH, contact time, and solution concentration, were investigated. The results showed that the adsorption kinetics were in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and that the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated by the Langmuir model are 106.3, 333.3, and 163.9 mg/g for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II), respectively. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) results demonstrated that cationic exchange and electrostatic interaction were the main heavy metal ions adsorption mechanisms. These results demonstrate that CE–PAANa graft copolymer sorbents from cellulose-rich SCB can potentially be used for the removal of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Since large amounts of pineapple leaves are abandoned after harvest in agricultural areas, the possibility of developing value-added products from them is of interest. In this work, cellulose fiber was extracted from pineapple leaves and modified with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and carboxymethyl (CM) groups to produce Cell-EDTA and Cell-CM, respectively, which were then used as heavy metal ion adsorbents. A solution of either lead ion (Pb2+) or cadmium ion (Cd2+) was used as wastewater for the purpose of studying adsorption efficiencies. The adsorption efficiencies of Cell-EDTA and Cell-CM were significantly higher than those of the unmodified cellulose in the pH range 1–7. Maximum adsorptions toward Pb2+ and Cd2+ were, for Cell-EDTA, 41.2 and 33.2 mg g–1, respectively, and, for Cell-CM, 63.4 and 23.0 mg g–1, respectively. The adsorption behaviors of Cell-CM for Pb2+ and Cd2+ fitted well with a pseudo-first-order model, but those of Cell-EDTA for Pb2+ and Cd2+ fitted well with a pseudo-second-order model. All of the adsorption behaviors could be described using the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Desorption studies of Pb2+ and Cd2+ on both adsorbents using 1 M HCl suggested that regenerability of Cell-EDTA was, for both adsorbates, better than that of Cell-CM. Moreover, adsorption measurements in a mixture of Pb2+ and Cd2+ at various ratios showed that for both adsorbents the adsorption of Pb2+ was higher than that of Cd2+, while the adsorption selectivity for Pb2+ of Cell-CM was greater than that of Cell-EDTA. This study showed that the modified cellulosic adsorbents made from pineapple leaves were able to efficiently adsorb metal ions.

Abstract:In this study, magnetic Fe3O4-MnO2 nanoplates were successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal process in order to remove bivalent heavy metals from water. The Fe3O4 part facilitated the reclamation of the adsorbent. Meanwhile, the modification by amorphous MnO2 could significantly enhance the specific surface area of Fe3O4-MnO2 and decrease the point of zero charge, thus ensured the good adsorption capacity for metal cations. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the five metal ions on Fe3O4-MnO2 and the pH effect on removal efficiency were detailedly investigated. Sips isotherm was the most suitable model to describe Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+ adsorption on Fe3O4-MnO2, while Temkin, Redlich-Peterson and Langmuir models showed a higher fitting degree for Ni2+. The adsorption capacities of Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ on Fe3O4-MnO2 were 208.17, 111.90, 169.90 100.24 and 55.63mg/g, respectively. Kinetic data were better fitted to pseudo-second-order model (R 2 >0.99), indicating a dominant role of chemisorption. Further analysis of infrared spectra demonstrated that the adsorption process was achieved mainly by ion exchange and complexation. The adsorption rates and preference ranking of metal ions on Fe3O4-MnO2 were in the same order: Pb2+ >Cu2+ >Cd2+ >Zn2+ >Ni2+. Moreover, the adsorbent showed good recyclability and excellent ability of neutralizing the solutions by surface protonation and deprotonation. Overall, the reported results here have significant implications for removing metal cations from water in practice.

Abstract:The spread of heavy metal ions has given rise to severe environmental problems, and eliminating heavy metal pollutants from the environment has become a difficult task facing the world. Developing a new material with efficient adsorption of heavy metal ions has become a hot focus of the academic community recently. This work presents a l-cysteine functionalized magnetite hollow MnFe2O4 nanosphere (H-MnFe2O4-Cys) material used to remove heavy metal ions in water, and this could be mass-produced using carbonized MnFe2O4 as a matrix, mixed acid as etchant and l-cysteine as the modification agent in a process-controllable reactor. The morphology of H-MnFe2O4-Cys could be effectively controlled by adjusting the etching time. The possible mechanism of the synthesis of H-MnFe2O4-Cys and the efficiency of the removal of Cr6+ and Pb2+ were discussed in detail. Based on the high magnetism, large interior cavities, high porosity, and abundant functional groups (-SH, -NH2), H-MnFe2O4-Cys exhibits excellent adsorption of heavy metal ions (Cr6+ and Pb2+ for instance) from wastewater. The high absorption efficiency and low manufacturing costs, coupled with the advantages of fast removal and magnetic recycling capability, make H-MnFe2O4-Cys a potential adsorbent for heavy metal ion contaminated water.

Abstract:A novel composite foam of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (CS), i.e. PVA/CS composites, was prepared as an adsorbent for the removal of malachite green (MG) and Cu 2+ from aqueous solution. The PVA/CS composite foam held the advantages of PVA and CS. The introduction of CS improved significantly the adsorption capacities of Cu 2+ and MG. The resulting foam with the interconnected pores exhibited good mass transfer property, processing properties and stability. Meanwhile, PVA/CS foam adsorbents had been proved with the excellent adsorption and fast kinetics for MG and Cu 2+. However, MG and Cu 2+ in binary system exhibited competitive adsorption. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics of PVA/CS foams for MG and Cu 2+ were studied in detail, moreover, the effects of ionic strength and foreign pollutants were also investigated. Additionally, desorption and reusability of PVA/CS foam was also investigated based on sequential adsorption-desorption cycles. PVA/CS foam adsorbents could simultaneously remove MG and Cu 2+ when they existed at low concentrations (<100mg/L). All the studied results indicated that PVA/CS composite foam was an efficient, low cost and reusable adsorbent for removal of MG and Cu 2+ from aqueous solutions due to its simple preparation, high adsorption capacity, fast adsorption rate, ionic strength independence, easy separation and good reusability. These properties are of potential application in the up-flow adsorption column for the removal of organic dye and heavy metal. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.
Removal of copper ions by cellulose nanocrystal-based hydrogel and reduced adsorbents for its catalytic properties

Abstract:Removal of copper ions (Cu(II)) efficiently from water is crucial for water environment security. We use sustainable, low-cost, renewable cellulose derivatives (carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC-Na)) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the matrix, and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as the functional addition. The CNC/CMC-Na/PVA hydrogel was prepared by the physical cross-linking method. Static adsorption experiments proved that CNC/CMC-Na/PVA hydrogel has a greater adsorption potential (108 mg/g) towards Cu(II). At the same time, the adsorption of Cu(II) on CNC/CMC-Na/PVA hydrogels is spontaneous and endothermic, and obeys the pseudo-second-order model with intra-particle diffusion. Furthermore, the primary adsorption mechanisms had been electrostatic attraction and surface complexation. Importantly, CNC/CMC-Na/PVA hydrogel has efficient absorbability and preferable reusability in actual water samples. Furthermore, the copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) adsorbed on the surface of CNC/CMC-Na/PVA hydrogels were reduced with NaBH4 in situ to realize the secondary utilization in CNC/CMC-Na/PVA hydrogels supported by Cu NPs. It is found that the material can be used as a catalyst to efficiently catalyze the conversion of HMF to BHMF (99%). Consequently, we provide insights into the hydrogel preparation that would possibly be promising novel adsorbents for the elimination of heavy-ion from sustainable water purification.

Abstract:In this study, a novel biomass adsorbent based on activated carbon incorporated with sulfur-based binary metal oxides layered nanoparticles (SML-AC), including sulfur (S2), manganese (Mn), and tin (Sn) oxide synthesized via the solvothermal method. The newly synthesized SML-AC was studied using FTIR, FESEM, EDX, and BET to determine its functional groups, surface morphology, and elemental composition. Hence, the BET was performed with an appropriate specific surface area for raw AC (356 m2·g−1) and modified AC-SML (195 m2·g−1). To prepare water samples for ICP-OES analysis, the suggested nanocomposite was used as an efficient adsorbent to remove lead (Pb2+), cadmium (Cd2+), chromium (Cr3+), and vanadium (V5+) from oil-rich regions. As the chemical structure of metal ions is influenced by solution pH, this parameter was considered experimentally, and pH 4, dosage 50 mg, and time 120 min were found to be the best with high capacity for all adsorbates. At different experimental conditions, the AC-SML provided a satisfactory adsorption capacity of 37.03–90.09 mg·g−1 for Cd2+, Pb2+, Cr3+, and V5+ ions. The adsorption experiment was explored, and the method was fitted with the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.99) as compared to the Freundlich model (R2 = 0.91). The kinetic models and free energy (<0.45 KJ·mol−1) parameters demonstrated that the adsorption rate is limited with pseudo-second order (R2 = 0.99) under the physical adsorption mechanism, respectively. Finally, the study demonstrated that the AC-SML nanocomposite is recyclable at least five times in the continuous adsorption–desorption of metal ions.

Abstract:The heavy metal pollution control industry requires convenient and cost-effective solutions to address complex aqueous environment. Adsorption method can be an effective strategy to realize these goals. Considering the importance of environmental and sustainable development strategies, there is an urgent need to develop efficient, green and non-toxic heavy metal adsorbents. In this work, a robust aminated cellulose-based porous adsorbent (PGPW) was developed from delignified wood and amino-rich polymer using a solvent-free, mild, simple and efficient preparation method. Such adsorbent exhibited excellent adsorption capacity (188.68 mg g-1) for Cu(II), and its adsorption behavior was consistent with pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Notably, PGPW with superior compressibility could be squeezed to achieve rapid desorption and reach equilibrium within 5 min, while still retaining 87 % adsorption efficiency after 50 cycles. In addition, PGPW showed remarkable selectivity towards various coexisting ionic systems and demonstrated a considerable adsorption capacity in natural water applications. The adsorption mechanism of heavy metal ions on porous adsorption material was elucidated. This approach provides a simple, gentle and sustainable strategy for preparing functionalized wood-based composites with efficient adsorption and ultra-fast desorption of heavy metal ions.
