Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets loaded with WO3 nanoparticles were prepared via heat treatment of g-C3N4 together with WOx-EDA nanobelts. The thermal treatment temperature and WOx-EDA precursor play the key role in enhancing the interaction between WO3 nanoparticles and g-C3N4 nanosheets, because the temperature of thermal decomposition of WOx-EDA (similar to 400 degrees C) is close to the thermal exfoliation temperature of g-C3N4. The structure evolution and promotion effect of the nanocomposites in photocatalytic performance were well studied. It is found that WO3 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on the surface of the g-C3N4 nanosheets, and the close integration of WO3 and g-C3N4 lead to the high photocatalytic activity in the degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. Meanwhile, a larger specific area and increase of visible light absorption are also of benefit to speed up the degradation of organic dye. Also, the mechanism of the photocatalytic reaction and its reutilization properties were investigated.

Abstract:High-crystalline g-C3N4 nanosheets (HC−CN) with reduced structural defects have been constructed through Ni-foam-induced thermal condensation because Ni-foam not only serves as a template for deposition of the 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets with high surface area to prevent stacking of g-C3N4 nanosheets but also acts as a catalyst to promote the polymerization and crystallization of g-C3N4 via effective dehydrogenation of the −NH2 group. The obtained HC–CN exhibits superior photocatalytic performance for H2 evolution under visible light irradiation (λ u003e 400 nm), which significantly benefits from the prolonged lifetime of photogenerated charge carriers and the increase of the transfer path within 2D structures of high-crystalline g-C3N4 nanosheets.

Abstract:CdWO4 nanocrystals with controlled particle size and crystallinity were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method using citric acid as the capping agent. By systematic sample characterization using X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscope, selected area electron diffraction, Barret−Emmett−Teller technique, Fourier transformed infrared spectra, UV−visible diffuse reflectance spectra, and photoluminescence spectra, all as-prepared CdWO4 samples were demonstrated to crystallize in a pure-phase of monoclinic wolframite structure. With varying the reaction temperature from 160 to 220 °C, particle size was controlled to grow from 11 to 21 nm. Abstract:We studied an orthorhombic-to-rhombohedral transformation of AgGaO2, which was performed in water at low temperature and accompanied by morphology variation, by using powder X-ray diffraction, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, and photocatalytic 2-propanol oxidization. The experimental results revealed that the crystal growth of the beta-phase (orthorhombic AgGaO2) to alpha-phase (rhombohedral AgGaO2) in water could be divided into phase-transformation, transition, and mature periods. The effects of water and temperature on the phase transformation and crystal-structure correction were clarified. It is found that the morphology of the alpha-phase sample is a superstructure, the shape of which is influenced by the phase-transformation temperature. The morphology variation of beta-phase particle to alpha-phase hexagonal platelet is a solid-liquid-solid growth process via the time-line based SEM images. The formation mechanism of this superstructure may be attributed to the growing-space competition.

Abstract:Novel highly efficient heterostructured photocatalysts consisting of g-C3N4 nanosheets on hexangular flowerlike FeWO4 microcrystals were first fabricated via an in situ growth approach. The intimate g-C3N4 coating layers (ca. 50-130 nm) on the surface of FeWO4 microcrystals were observed through transmission electron microscopy. An all-side evaluation of its performance toward typical photoassisted oxidation and reduction reactions was carried out, which exhibited drastically improved performance for photocatalytic oxygen production and photo degradation, while obviously suppressed hydrogen evolution activity when compared with the bulk g-C3N4 (CNU). The optimal photocatalyst CNU-FW90 (90 mg of FeWO4 in 15 g of urea) displayed an oxygen evolution rate of 303 mu mol/(g h), about 2.4 and 3.8 times as much as that of CNU and FeWO4, respectively. Not only that, CNU-FW90 showed superior degradation activity with a reaction kinetics rate constant of 0.1192 min(-1), nearly 5-fold higher than that of the pure CNU. By correlating the performance with the band structures and surface valence states of g-C3N4@FeWO4 heterojunctions, a possible mechanism was proposed to uncover the differences between oxidation and reduction reactions in this system, which highlighted the crucial role of Fe3+/Fe2+ couple in tuning the performance of photocatalytic reactions. This work put forward a promising strategy to design highly efficient semiconductor photocatalysts and shed light on the vital effect of surface valence state of Fe element in tuning the performance of Fe-related photocatalysts.

Abstract:Ag2WO4 is a significant photocatalyst that responds to UV light irradiation only, which greatly hinders it for further practical application for solar light. To address this problem, herein, 1D plasmonic Ag/Ag2WO4 photocatalysts have been fabricated by a successive process including hydrothermal synthesis to obtain Ag2WO4 followed by an additional in situ chemical-reduction process for Ag decoration. Then, the structural features, optical properties, and electronic structures of Ag2WO4 and Ag/Ag2WO4 nanowires were systematically investigated via a combination of theoretical calculations and experimental evidence. The plasmon-enhanced Ag/Ag2WO4 nanowires exhibited higher visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity, which performed a desired photodestruction ratio of 91.2% on methylene blue within 60 min and good stability in five cycles. The Ag decoration greatly facilitates visible-light harvesting and thus promotes photogenerated radical oxidation to dye, which is evidenced by the higher hydroxyl radical level of Ag/Ag2WO4 detected in the ESR test during the photocatalytic process. The theoretical calculation based on density functional theory indicates that Ag nanoparticles formed on the surface of Ag2WO4 could narrow the band gap of Ag2WO4. In addition, the surface plasmon resonance absorption effect and fast charge transfer effect in the metal-semiconductor system contribute to the photocatalytic performance of Ag/Ag2WO4.

Abstract:Facilitating charge-carrier separation and transfer is fundamentally important to improve the photocatalytic performance of semiconductor materials. Herein, two-dimensional hexagonal WO3 nanoplates were synthesized by a two-step route: rapid evaporation and solid-phase sintering. The as-prepared WO3 exhibits an enhanced activity of photocatalytic water oxidation compared to bulk monoclinic WO3 . The electron dynamics analysis reveals that a more efficient charge-carrier separation in the former can be obtained, the origin of which can be attributed to an increased number of surface defects in hexagonal WO3 nanoplates. This work not only presents a novel and simple method to produce two-dimensional hexagonal WO3 nanoplates, but also demonstrates that surface defects and two-dimensional geometric structures can promote the charge separation, which may be extended to the design of other efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate that a type-II g-C3N4 nanosheet (CNNS)/W18O49 heterostructure composite can be switched to Z-scheme through the deposition of Au nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of CNNS. Abstract:Novel hierarchical sheet-on-sheet WO3/g-C3N4 (WOCN) composites were successfully fabricated by simple calcination method using acid-treated SrWO4/g-C3N4 as precursors. The morphological observation showed that WO3 nanosheets were closely anchored on the surface of g-C3N4 nanosheets to construct a hierarchical nanostructure. The as-synthesized WOCN composites exhibited a significantly higher photocatalytic activity towards the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) compared to pristine g-C3N4 and WO3 under simulated sunlight irradiation. The optimum photocatalytic activity of the WOCN at a WO3 mass content of 34.6% was 6.5 and 3.0 times higher than that of pristine WO3 and g-C3N4, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activities of WOCN composites were attributed to the formation of hierarchical heterostructure, which provided larger specific surface area, better visible-light absorption capability, reduced the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and enhanced separation efficiency of charge carriers. A Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was proposed according to active species trapping experiments.

Abstract:WO3 nanoplate arrays with (002) oriented facets grown on fluorine doped SnO2 (FTO) glass substrates are tailored by tuning the precursor solution via a facile hydrothermal method. A 2-step hydrothermal method leads to the preferential growth of WO3 film with enriched (002) facets, which exhibits extraordinary photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance with a remarkable photocurrent density of 3.7mAcm–2 at 1.23V vs. revisable hydrogen electrode (RHE) under AM 1.5G illumination without the use of any cocatalyst, corresponding to ~93% of the theoretical photocurrent of WO3. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations together with experimental studies reveal that the enhanced photocatalytic activity and better photo-stability of the WO3 films are attributed to the synergistic effect of highly reactive (002) facet and nanoplate structure which facilitates the photo–induced charge carrier separation and suppresses the formation of peroxo-species. Without the use of oxygen evolution cocatalysts, the excellent PEC performance, demonstrated in this work, by simply tuning crystal facets and nanostructure of pristine WO3 films may open up new opportunities in designing high performance photoanodes for PEC water splitting.

Abstract:A novel Z-scheme Ag-decorated g-C3N4/B2WO6 composite is successfully synthesized by introducing Ag NPs on the interface of g-C3N4/Bi2WO6 composite. The Ag-decorated g-C3N4/Bi2WO6 sample exhibits much higher photocatalytic activity than g-C3N4/Bi2WO6 composite on the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light. The significantly enhanced catalytic efficiency could be attributed to the Z-cheme transfer mechanism of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, which was confirmed by investigating the morphology, structure, optical properties and photocatalytic activities. Abstract:Functional Materials Letters, Ahead of Print. In this work, WO3 quantum dots grow in situ on the synthesized ultra-thin g-C3N4 nanosheets, ultimately forming a type of tightly bound 2D/0D Z-type heterojunctions. It was found that WO3 quantum dots were closely combined with g-C3N4 nanosheets through SEM and TEM measurements. XRD, IR, and XPS characterization proved a g-C3N4/WO3 heterojunction material was formed. The construction of g-C3N4/WO3 heterojunctions enhanced visible light absorption, improved carrier separation efficiency, and reduced charge transfer resistance. Photocatalytic hydrogen production tests showed that the hydrogen production rate of 20% g-C3N4/WO3 composite materials was 2.8 times that of the original g-C3N4, and the hydrogen production amount within 3 h was 3.7 times that of the original g-C3N4. Photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B and 4-chlorophenol under visible light irradiation showed that compared with g-C3N4, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 20% g-C3N4/WO3 composite materials was enhanced. The results reveal that the special structured g-C3N4/WO3 composite materials have excellent photocatalytic activity, which can not only efficiently produce hydrogen but also efficiently degrade organic pollutants, providing an important reference for solving energy crises and environmental problems.

Abstract:In this work, WO3 crystal structure films are deposited on conductive glass substrates by seed layer assisted hydrothermal reaction method. Through controlling the concentration of hydrochloric acid, oxalic acid, and the hydrothermal postprocessing temperature, the micro-peony, micro urchin-like, and porous petal-like WO3 crystal structures are obtained respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical characterization are used to study the formation mechanism of different structures and their effects on the electrochromic properties of WO3 films. The Cl– in HCl has a strong promoting role towards the c axis in WO3 crystal growth and oxalic acid has a promoting effect towards an a axis. In terms of color efficiency, the CE value of micro-urchin is 42.37 cm2/C, far greater than those of two other WO3 structures, 15.21 cm2/C and 12.71 cm2/C. Owing to the cold-water quenching treatment, the CE value of WO3 micro-peony with porous surface structure is 56.95 cm2/C, quadruple CE value of the smooth surface structure, slightly better than that of the micro-urchin structure.
