Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets loaded with WO3 nanoparticles were prepared via heat treatment of g-C3N4 together with WOx-EDA nanobelts. The thermal treatment temperature and WOx-EDA precursor play the key role in enhancing the interaction between WO3 nanoparticles and g-C3N4 nanosheets, because the temperature of thermal decomposition of WOx-EDA (similar to 400 degrees C) is close to the thermal exfoliation temperature of g-C3N4. The structure evolution and promotion effect of the nanocomposites in photocatalytic performance were well studied. It is found that WO3 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on the surface of the g-C3N4 nanosheets, and the close integration of WO3 and g-C3N4 lead to the high photocatalytic activity in the degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. Meanwhile, a larger specific area and increase of visible light absorption are also of benefit to speed up the degradation of organic dye. Also, the mechanism of the photocatalytic reaction and its reutilization properties were investigated.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) was hybridized by Bi2WO6 via a hydrothermal method. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) results reveal that an intimate interface between C3N4 and Bi2WO6 forms in the heterojunctions. The UV-vis diffuse reflection spectra show that the resulting C3N4-Bi2WO6 heterojunctions possess more intensive absorption within the visible light range in comparison with pure Bi2WO6. These excellent structural and spectral properties endowed the C3N4-Bi2WO6 heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activities. Significantly, the optimum photocatalytic activity of the 0.5C(3)N(4)-0.5Bi(2)WO(6) heterojunction for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) was almost 3 and 155 times higher than those of either individual C3N4 or Bi2WO6. The possible photocatalytic mechanism with superoxide radical species as the main active species in photocatalysis is proposed on the basis of experimental results. Moreover, the heterojunction depicted high stability and durability during six successive cycles.
Acid-induced Molecule Self-Assembly Synthesis of Z-scheme WO3/g-C3N4 Heterojunctions for Robust Photocatalysis Against Phenolic Pollutants

Abstract:Searching for effective strategies of boosting charge carrier separation and improving photooxidation ability are highly desirable to design graphitic carbon nitride-based photocatalysts for efficient organic pollutant degradation. Here we demonstrate an in situ acid-induced self-assembly of melamine and sodium tungstate method combined with hydrothermal treatment, by forming WO3/melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular complex, to fabricate porous sheet-like WO3/g-C3N4 heterojunctions with oxygen doping; meanwhile, the morphology of WO3/g-C3N4 nanosheets can be further regulated by selecting different short-chain carboxylic acids. The heterojunctions exhibit enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity than bulk g-C3N4 and supramolecule-based g-C3N4 in degradation of phenolic pollutants, acetaminophen and methylparaben. The tests including active species trapping, photoelectrochemistry and photoluminescence firmly evidence that the extraordinary Z-scheme charge transfer manner plays dominated role to this excellent activity, which can accelerate charge carrier separation and retain powerful redox ability of electrons on conduction band of g-C3N4 and holes on valence band of WO3 simultaneously; additionally, porous sheet-like nanostructures and oxygen doping also positively influence the activity via improving light harvesting, providing plentiful active sites, shortening charge carrier migration distance and further facilitating charge carrier separation. LC-MS analysis and TOC monitoring find the target pollutants are completely degraded under oxidation of holes, superoxide and hydroxyl radicals.

Abstract:The composite Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 nanosheet was fabricated by facile precipitation method for the first time. The results of XRD, XPS and FT-IR confirmed the successful construction of heterojunctions. Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 displayed better adsorptive and photocatalytic activity for removal of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) with good stability. Zeta potential and BET analysis suggested that the enhancement of Lewis base sites and large surface area were the reason for the improvement of adsorptive mechanism. On the side of photocatalysis, the better charge separation and visible light utilization in Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 were confirmed by transient photocurrent response, PL spectrum and UV–vis DRS. Moreover, active species trapping experiments and ESR tests indicated that h+ and ·O2− were the main radicals in the photocatalytic system. As the formation of type II heterojunction, band structures were optimized by valence band (VB) and conduct band (CB) offset, which was depth calculated. Due to this optimization and more activity sites generated in the photocatalyst surface, a slight improvement of the ·O2− generation was displayed by quantification test. This work might provide some guidance for synergy of adsorption and the photocatalytic degradation mechanism, and rational construction of type II heterojunctions to solve ever-increasing environmental problems.

Abstract:Visible-light-driven WO3/g-C3N4 composites photocatalysts were synthesized via a facile one-step simultaneously heating procedure with urea as the main precursor. These prepared catalyst samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N-2 adsorption, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The photocatalytic activity of the WO3/g-C3N4 composites was evaluated by the photo-degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the composites with 25"wt.% WO3 content exhibited highest photocatalytic activity compared to pure WO3, bare g-C3N4 and other WO3/g-C3N4 composites. The favorable photocatalytic activity of WO3/g-C3N4 composites was mainly attributed to the excellent surface properties, enhanced visible-light absorption and the desirable band positions. A possible Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on structure and electrochemical characterizations results, which can well explain the enhanced migration rate of photogenerated electrons and holes in WO3/g-C3N4 heterojunctions. Abstract:Novel WO3/g-C3N4 composite photocatalysts were prepared by a calcination process with different mass contents of WO3. The photocatalysts were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TG), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts was evaluated by degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) under visible light. The results indicated that the WO3/g-C3N4 composite photocatalysts showed higher photocatalytic activity than both the pure WO3 and pure g-C3N4. The optimum photocatalytic activity of WO3/g-C3N4 at a WO3 mass content of 9.7% under visible light irradiation was up to 4.2 times and 2.9 times as high as that of the pure WO3 and pure g-C3N4, respectively. The remarkably increased performance of WO3/g-C3N4 was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between the interface of WO3 and g-C3N4, including enhanced optical absorption in the visible region, enlarged specific surface areas and the suitable band positions of WO3/g-C3N4 composites.

Abstract:An excellent ternary Z-scheme photocatalytic heterojunction of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet/WO 3 /graphene oxide (CWG) was prepared by in-situ growth of WO 3 during thermal exfoliation bulk g-C 3 N 4 to g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet, followed by electrostatic self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO) and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet in the HNO 3 solution. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated by the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The CWG heterojunction exhibited outstanding photocatalytic efficiency for RhB degradation, which was about 4.6 and 23 times that of CN and WO 3 , indicating the introduction of GO and WO 3 improved the capability of the photocatalysis due to an efficient charge separation and transfer between g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets and WO 3 . In addition, the possible for the enhancing photocatalytic mechanism was revealed based on the active species trapping and ESR analysis.

Abstract:Nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) based highly efficient ternary photocatalyst are fabricated by modifying surface of GO incorporated WO3 nano-sheets. XRD confirmed the formation of monoclinicWO3 nano-sheets. All the characteristic peaks of WO3, GO and NCQDs are obvious in XRD patterns of WO3/GO/NCQDs ternary photocatalysts confirming successful fabrication of the photocatalysts. SEM images showed that WO3 host matrix is distorted after incorporation of GO and NCQDs owing to lower interfacial tension. The surface of WO3 nano-sheets is modified with morphological defects making more active sites available. UV-vis spectra exhibited extended visible light absorption and remarkable reduction of WO3 band gap energy. The photoluminescence spectra confirmed the efficient charge separation in NCQDs modified ternary photocatalyst. The synthesized composites were applied for the photocatalytic degradation of harmful organic dye i.e. methyl orange (MO). The ternary composites represented the excellent photocatalytic activity as compared to binary and pure WO3 photocatalysts. This enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the availability of active sites, extended light absorption in visible region and enhanced charge separation efficiency.
Constructing Mesoporous G-C3n4/zno Nanosheets Catalyst for Enhanced Visible-Light Driven Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Novel mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was synthesized via one-step thermal condensation of ethyl cellulose (EC) and urea mixture. Morphology, crystal structure and charge carrier lifetime of the composites were controlled by tuning the amount of EC. The optimized 5 wt% EC/g-C3N4 (OEC/g-C3N4), which showed the highest surface area and longest carrier lifetime, were facilely incorporated into the ZnO nanosheet by the hydrothermal method as catalyst for methylene blue degradation under visible-light irradiation. The optimized photocatalytic activity of OEC/g-C3N4/ZnO nanosheets at a weight ratio of 3% under visible-light irradiation is almost 8.5 times higher than that of ZnO nanosheets. This enhancement in performance is mainly attributed to OEC/g-C3N4 incorporation, which broadens the light absorption and facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron hole pairs at the interface. In addition, this method is expected to be extended to other EC/g-C3N4 loaded materials.
Metallic WO2-decorated g-C3N4 nanosheets as noble-metal-free photocatalysts for efficient photocatalysis

Abstract:The introduction of a metallic cocatalyst is a good strategy for achieving a high carrier density and absorbing photons under wide-spectrum illumination. Herein, metallic WO2/g-C3N4 nanocomposites were designed and synthesized for the first time using a simple calcination method to enhance the photocatalytic performance. WO2/g-C3N4 exhibited significant photocatalytic properties: under visible light irradiation, 4 wt% WO2/g-C3N4 exhibited an RhB photocatalytic degradation of 96% in 120 min. Meanwhile, the H2 production rate of 4 wt% WO2/g-C3N4/3 wt% Pt was 2436.9 μmol g−1 h−1, which was 2.55 and 6.18 times higher than that of 3 wt% Pt/g-C3N4 (956.35 μmol g−1 h−1) and WO2/g-C3N4, respectively. Experimental tests and density functional theory calculations reveal that WO2 exhibits a metal-like performance with a narrow bandgap to capture electrons and hinders the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers at the interface of WO2/g-C3N4. Our study provides a new perspective for the rational design of metallic cocatalysts/semiconductors with highly efficient photocatalytic properties.

Unprecedented Enhancement in Visible-Light-driven Photoactivity of Modified Graphitic C3N4 by Coupling with H2WO4

Abstract:The modified graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets by coupling with H2WO4 are fabricated via an easy, mild and environmental-friendly impregnation method for the first time. Compared with bare g-C3N4 and H2WO4, the H2WO4/g-C3N4 composite shows significant enhancement in the visible-light-driven photoactivity toward the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). It is found that 10 wt.% H2WO4/gC(3)N(4) exhibits the best photocatalytic performance, with around 20 times higher activity than that of pure g-C3N4 nanosheets. The remarkably increased performance is mainly attributed to the existing synergistic interaction between H2WO4 and g-C3N4. The strong interaction could reduce the photoinduced electron-hole recombination and further improve the photocatalytic activity. Additionally, O-center dot(2) is the dominating reactive species for the degradation of RhB, which has been confirmed by the radical scavengers tests. The synthesized photocatalysts present super stability even after nine successive runs. Considering the low-cost, easy preparation process and ultra-high activity, the H2WO4/g-C3N4 photocatalyst can be served as a promising candidate for environment cleaning and waste water treatment. Abstract:In this study, the performance of monoclinic WO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 nanoparticles, an efficient visible photocatalyst, was enhanced using loaded carbon quantum dots (CDs). Moreover, the structure, morphology, and photoelectric performance of ternary photocatalytic composite materials were characterized. The photocatalytic performance of ternary photocatalysts was evaluated using malachite green (MG) as the degradation target; a degradation rate of up to 96.3% was achieved after visible-light irradiation for 80 min. WO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 catalyst with 10%-loaded CDs exhibited the highest photocatalytic degradation rate, which was 23 and 30.44 times higher than that of pure WO 3 and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. Active species capture experiments showed that h + and ·O 2 − are key factors in the MG light degradation process. Furthermore, system characterizations were performed to explain the feasible photocatalytic mechanism for removing MG under visible light irradiation.

Facile Fabrication of Heterostructured G-C3n4/bi2moo6 Microspheres with Highly Efficient Activity under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:A facile and template-free solvothermal method was developed for the synthesis of microspheric g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 photocatalysts. The obtained g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 composites were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS). The XRD, FTIR, and HRTEM characterization results confirmed the formation of heterojunction structures at the interfaces of g-C3N4 and Bi2MoO6. The DRS results showed that the absorption edges of g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 composites were red shifted in the visible light region with the increase of g-C3N4 content. The SEM and TEM images revealed that the composites exhibited a microsphere-like morphology and were composed of smaller nanoplates. The elemental mapping images revealed that g-C3N4 and Bi2MoO6 nanoflakes uniformly assembled together to form hierarchical flowers. Compared with pure g-C3N4 and Bi2MoO6, the as-prepared samples exhibited superior photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of dyes (Rhodamine B and Methyl blue) under visible light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 composites could be attributed to their strong visible light absorption, the high migration efficiency of photo-induced carriers, and the interfacial electronic interaction. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirmed that the interface charge separation efficiency was greatly improved by coupling g-C3N4 with Bi2MoO6. It was also confirmed that the photo-degradation of dye molecules is mainly attributed to the oxidizing ability of the generated holes (h(+)) and partly to the oxidizing ability of ·O2(-) and ·OH radicals.

Abstract:Ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets were synthesized via thermal exfoliation of bulk urea-derived g-C3N4 under an argon atmosphere. As a visible-light responsive photocatalyst, this material exhibits a much superior photocatalytic activity in pollution degradation and H-2 evolution than bulk g-C3N4, as a result of the extended region of visible light response and the enhanced surface area of ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets. These findings may provide a promising and facile approach to the design of high-performance photocatalysts.
WO3 nanoparticles decorated on both sidewalls of highly porous TiO2 nanotubes to improve UV and visible-light photocatalysis

Abstract:The hybrid structure of nanoparticle-decorated nanotubes has the advantage of both large specific surface areas of nanoparticles and anisotropic properties of nanotubes, which is desirable for many applications. In this study, WO3 nanoparticles decorated on highly porous TiO2 nanotubes along both internal and external sidewalls (WO3@TiO2@WO3 heterostructures) were synthesized through emulsion electrospinning, thermal evaporation, and thermal annealing. The WO3@TiO2@WO3 heterostructures had large specific surface areas, high porous structure and excellent interface (between WO3 nanoparticles and TiO2 nanotubes). Three other samples, TiO2 nanofibers, TiO2 nanotubes, and TiO2 nanofibers decorated by WO3 nanoparticles, were prepared in order to compare with the WO3@TiO2@WO3 heterostructures for photocatalysis with both UV and visible light irradiation. The new material (WO3@TiO2@WO3 heterostructures) had a wide range of light absorption and demonstrated the best photocatalytic performance. The possible growth mechanism and reasons for high photocatalysis are discussed in detail.

Abstract:In this work, we have prepared a series of efficient visible-light-driven WO3/Fe(III) nanofiber photocatalysts by electrospinning and impregnation method. The physical and optical properties of the prepared photocatalysts were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the nitrogen adsorption analysis. Under the irradiation of visible light, all the prepared WO3/Fe(III) nanofiber photocatalysts exhibit much higher activity for degrading methyl orange (MO) solution than the pristine WO3 nanofibers, and reaches 94.6% under visible light irradiation for 3 h when the relative grafting amount of Fe(III) ions was 0.003 by mass percentage. Grafting of Fe(III) ions on the surface of WO3 nanofiber could enhance its visible-light absorption and reduce the photo-generated electron-hole pairs recombination due to the interfacial charge transfer (IFCT) effect, and thus improve its photocatalytic activity, which were further verified by the ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and the ns-level time-resolved fluorescence decay spectrum measurements.

Abstract:It is of crucial importance to fabricate near-infrared responsive (NIR) catalysts to maximize the utilization of solar energy. And achieving efficient charge separation under near-infrared light was also a great challenge. Herein, the synergy of both improved upconversion and charge separation performances of WO3 was realized by atomic doping of Cu element. The induced mid-gap states can decrease the required excitation energy of photogenerated electrons to improve the upconversion ability, which enhanced the light absorption capacity of WO3 nanosheet. Moreover, the introduced Cu element not only acted as the trapping sites of photogenerated charges, but also led to the charge redistribution of the crystal structure over WO3, which efficiently enhanced the charge separation process. As a result, excellent tetracycline photodegradation performance under NIR light (mineralization degree reaching 92.4%) was realized, where the rate constant of 1 wt% Cu-WO3 (2.92 × 10-3 min−1) reached 14.4 times over that of pristine WO3 (2.02 × 10-4 min−1).

Abstract:The g‐C3N4 synthesized through water vapor activation and sulfur doping exhibits a considerable bandgap value of 3.04 eV, rendering it proficient in efficiently degrading organic matter under visible light irradiation. Graphite carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) has garnered considerable attention due to its excellent photocatalytic properties for the degradation of organic matter in wastewater treatment. Herein, sulfur‐doped g‐C3N4 nanosheets (CN−S‐X) were successfully synthesized via physical steam activation using thiourea and urea as precursors. Comprehensive characterizations demonstrate that the enhanced photocatalysis is attributed to the ultrathin structure, highly active site, vacancy defects, and high specific surface area due to the synergy of S doping and steam activation. The as‐prepared CN−S‐25 photocatalyst exhibits a desirable degradation efficiency of 95.4 % for methylene blue dye with a high degradation rate of 2.65×10−2 min−1 under visible‐light irradiation, which are 2.1 and 5.52 times those for bulk g‐C3N4, respectively as well as good reusability and stability. This study provides a simple and promising strategy to regulate the nanostructure of g‐C3N4 for highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Microstructure and morphology of as–prepared WO3•1/3H2O NPs were investigated through X–ray diffraction patterns (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FT–IR) spectra, while porosity and bandgap through specific surface area and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. It was found that Pd2+ ions played a crucial role in the formation of WO3•1/3H2O NPs, and thus a possible formation mechanism was proposed based on the growth processes. The photocatalytic property of WO3•1/3H2O NPs were evaluated on the basis of Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation in aqueous solutions under simulated visible irradiation. The photocatalytic experimental results indicated that as–prepared WO3•1/3H2O NPs exhibited much more superior photocatalytic activity by contrast to that of the commercial WO3.</dd></dl>

Abstract:The nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres could be successfully synthesized in large quantities by a facile hydrothermal strategy in the presence of surfactant hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) under mild conditions. The morphology and size of as-prepared Bi2WO6 could be readily controlled by adjusting the synthetic parameters such as hydrothermal time. The probable formation mechanism of nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres was discussed in detail. The hierarchical nanosheet-assembled microspheres could be constructed by orderly arranged nanosheets. The photocatalytic activity of the nanosheet-assembled Bi2WO6 microspheres was evaluated by degrading rhodamine B (RhB) under irradiation of visible light. The brilliant photodegradation efficiency is about 98% under visible light irradiation for 50 min. The results suggest that the as-prepared Bi2WO6 microspheres have good prospects as the photocatalyst for the removal of organic pollutants.
