Abstract:On the basis of Toda-Yamamoto's long-term cause and effects test program and generalized impulse response technology,this article conducts researches on the long-term cause and effects relationship between total social real fixed investment and the movement of retail price level,and then further examines the role of money supply M1 and trade interdependence in promoting such relationship.The results are as follows.(1)Money supply M1 is the sole endogenous variant.Its growth does not directly lead to the movement of price level,but indirectly influences it through total social real fixed investment.(2)There exists a two-way cause and effects relationship between trade interdependence and total social real fixed investment.Only through the latter can the former indirectly influence the movement of price level.(3)China's reform and opening-up policy not only helps to absorb surplus production capacity but also intensifies the problem.However,the absorption effects surpass the intensification results.(4)The positive shock of investing in a unit will lead to mitigate inflation in the first 2-4 years,but will result in relatively serious deflation in the late five years.
Inflation Disagreement Weakens the Power of Monetary Policy

Abstract:Households often disagree in their inflation outlooks. We present novel empirical evidence that inflation disagreement weakens the power of forward guidance and conventional monetary policy. These empirical observations can be rationalized by a model featuring heterogeneous beliefs about the central banks’ inflation target. An agent who perceives higher future inflation also perceives a lower real interest rate and thus would like to borrow more to finance consumption, subject to borrowing constraints. Higher inflation disagreement would lead to a larger share of borrowing-constrained agents, resulting in more sluggish responses of aggregate consumption to changes in both current and expected future interest rates. This mechanism also provides a microeconomic foundation for Euler equation discounting that helps resolve the forward guidance puzzle.

Abstract:In an infinitely lived, representative agent model with the Becker-Mulligan (1997) endogenous time preference, this paper reexamines the effects of monetary growth. An increase in the inflation rate reduces the resources spent on imagining the future, which increases the rate of time preference and decreases the steady-state value of capital stock. This model relates inflation and consumer patience, and shows that inflation will make people less patient. Finally, Friedman's optimal monetary growth rule is also investigated and found not to hold.

Abstract:This paper shows that the effect of inflation on asset prices and real aggregates depends on the financial intermediation sector. When firms finance using nominal long-term debt issued by financial intermediaries, unexpected changes in inflation lead to a wealth transfer across sectors. Higher inflation decreases firms' real liabilities and default risk, which helps reduce debt overhang. However, it hurts intermediaries' balance sheet, leading to a contraction in credit. We show theoretically that the ultimate effect of inflation depends on the tightness of financing constraints in the intermediation sector. We find strong empirical evidence consistent with these results. We also show that an inflation policy responding to both financial and real variables can help stabilize our economy.

Abstract:In a stochastic monetary model with the cash-in-advance constraint and the social-status concern, this paper studies the effects of inflation and inflation variability on growth. It is shown that the Tobin effect still holds under deterministic monetary growth. The effect of inflation on growth, however, is ambiguous under stochastic monetary growth: the effect is positive when an agent's desire for social status is relatively strong and negative when this desire is relatively weak. It is also found that inflation variability always stimulates growth.

Abstract:We study corporate investment by considering both external economic factor and managerial behavior, in particular the dynamic interaction between inflation uncertainty and managerial overconfidence by employing a sample of Chinese companies. The empirical findings demonstrate that lower inflation uncertainty increases over-investment, and managerial overconfidence exacerbates such effect. Further analysis shows that over-investment in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) is mainly driven by managerial overconfidence, and the negative association between inflation uncertainty and overinvestment is due to managerial overconfidence. The effect of managerial overconfidence is mute in non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs). In addition, we find asymmetric impact of inflation uncertainty on corporate over-investment during different economic cycles. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The resurgence of inflation has been accompanied by a reversal of prospects of growth, with a prominent role assigned to the fall of households' purchasing power. Yet this real income effect of inflation surprises, independent of restrictive monetary policy, is not present in the standard New Keynesian models for monetary policy. The reason lies in the formulation of the consumption‐based "IS equation". The paper shows how the income effect can be introduced by reformulating the consumption function, with the consequence that it exerts an autonomus stabilization effect on inflation. The main monetary policy implications are examined by means of simulations.

Abstract:UK households that wish for lower inflation and lower nominal interest rates have higher expected inflation. We interpret the evidence through the lens of a New Keynesian model where ambiguity-averse households differ in wealth, skill, labor market participation, and the receipt of government transfers and are subject to Knightian uncertainty. Households act based on beliefs that are negatively affected by their wishes, the more so the greater the amount of uncertainty. Using indirect inference, we find substantial output costs due to uncertainty. Monetary policy uncertainty contributes little to the costs because households generally dislike monetary expansions. Abstract:We examine the existence of liquidity effects by using the equilibrium interest rates estimated from the disequilibrium analysis instead of the observed interest rate. The use of equilibrium interest rates allows us to take the growth rate in the money supply as being exogenous and circumvent the identification problem away. Following the traditional AR model and the method proposed by Hamilton (1997), we obtain evidences showing the negative relationship between the equilibrium interest rate and the growth rate in money supply.

Abstract:With the introduction of Marshallian recursive preferences to the Sidrauski model, this paper re-examines the effects of monetary growth on the economy. It is found that an increase in the monetary growth rate decreases the steady-state value of capital stock, consumption, and real balance holding. Short-run analysis presents the mechanism that inflation affects the economy: An increase in the monetary growth rate leads to an increase of initial consumption and reduction of initial savings, which increases the instantaneous time preference rate and makes people less patient initially. Finally, Friedman's optimal monetary growth rule is also investigated in this paper.

Abstract:We study a game where households buy consumption goods to preempt inflation. This game features a unique equilibrium with high (low) inflation, whenever money supply is high (low). For intermediate levels of money supply, there exist multiple stable equilibria where inflation is either high or low. Equilibria with moderate inflation, however, do not exist, and can thus not be targeted by central banks. That is, depending on agents' equilibrium play, money supply is always either too high or too low for moderate inflation. Finally, we find that inflation rates of durable goods, such as houses, cars, luxury watches, or furniture, are useful leading indicators for changes in overall inflation.

It can reflect the fact that the level of price rising exceeds continuously the level of labor productivity and the growth rate of income. Inflation is a result produced by real factors and non-real factors working together in economic activities. The key for governing inflation is to optimize the credit structure and to increase the supply of inputs to the economic departments at base levels, rather than simply reduce the amount of the money supply. At present, to prevent the "stagflation" should become the central task of macro-controlling in China.

Abstract:The current round of expected inflation in China is the result of declining real money purchasing power caused by the excess money supply in essence, suggesting that the persistent high ratio money supply in China in recent years can not be simply explained by"money missing". In order to test the motivation of inflation, the paper by introducing the output gap, money gap models, found that the output gap has a short-term positive impact on inflation, while the money gap is the main and continued source of inflation. Meanwhile, the real estate market has propelled China's inflation, positive results showed that the rise in house prices has a direct and significant impact on inflation and money gap, thus the control of house prices should also be an important measure of inflation regulation for the central governments.

Abstract:Traditionally, according to the Fisher effect hypothesis, real estate is a preferred asset of preservation for hedging against inflation and allocating asset. But this hypothesis has long been questioned, and thus a very different two types of views about this issue are formed. With the expansion of the portfolio theory, the paper demonstrates the intrinsic correlation mechanism between real estate investment returns and inflation. Based on Chinese 2001 2011 monthly data, implementing ARIMA techniques to decompose the rate of inflation, the paper uses VECM model to study the effect of inflation on the real estate investment return rate and finds that real estate investment can not hedge against inflation. The cause of detail is studied and we find in China, due to the "proxy effect" and "inflation illusion effect", higher inflation will weaken the real estate price appreciation, reduce the real estate investment return. The paper concludes that guiding reasonably inflation expectations can improve the ability of real estate investment's hedging against inflation. At the same time, fully examining the impact of the interest rate policy's lag on inflation and prudently using interest rate instruments can effectively manage inflation.

Abstract:China's price indices begin to show a more substantial upward trend,its inflation pressure continues to grow.The inflation reflects China's traditional economic growth model has the "dilemma": for a long time,China's economic growth is excessively dependent on government investment,making the issuance of bank credit and currency hard to control,while in high-growth economy there is always the risk of high inflation.In reverse,the increase of productive cost caused by inflation will not only extrude enterprise's profit,but also decrease economic growth rate.Because the role of monetary policy is limited in the context of quantitative easing in USA,China's inflationary pressures will continue for some time.To effectively prevent the "stagflation" risk,China's central government should make its monetary policy and fiscal policy cooperate systematically.

Abstract:This paper investigates the effects of monetary policy on long-run economic growth via different cash-in-advance (CIA) constraints on R&D in a Schumpeterian growth model with vertical and horizontal innovations. The relationship between inflation and growth is contingent on the relative extents of CIA constraints and diminishing returns to two types of innovation. This model can generate a mixed (monotonic or non-monotonic) relationship between inflation and growth, given that the relative strength of monetary effects on growth between different CIA constraints and that of R&D-labor-reallocation effects between different diminishing returns vary with the nominal interest rate. In the empirically relevant case where horizontal R&D is subject to larger diminishing returns than vertical R&D, inflation and growth can exhibit an inverted-U relationship when the CIA constraint on horizontal R&D is sufficiently larger than that on vertical R&D. Finally, we calibrate the model to the US economy and find that the growth-maximizing rate of inflation is around 2.4%, which is consistent with the recent empirical estimates.

Abstract:I propose an approach to quantify attention to inflation in the data and show that the decrease in the volatility and persistence of U.S. inflation after the Great Inflation period was accompanied by a decline in the public's attention to inflation. This decline in attention has important implications (positive and normative) for monetary policy as it renders managing inflation expectations more difficult and can lead to inflation-attention traps: prolonged periods of a binding lower bound and low inflation due to slowly-adjusting inflation expectations. As attention declines the optimal policy response is to increase the inflation target. Accounting for the lower bound fundamentally changes the normative implications of declining attention. While lower attention raises welfare absent the lower-bound constraint, it decreases welfare when accounting for the lower bound.

Abstract:The paper shows, in a simple analytical framework, the existence of a deflationary bias in an economy with a low natural rate of interest, a zero lower bound (ZLB) constraint on nominal interest rates and a discretionary Central Bank (CB) with an inflation mandate. The presence of the ZLB prevents the CB from offsetting negative shocks to inflation whereas it can offset positive shocks. This asymmetry pushes average inflation below the target which in turn drags down inflation expectations and reinforces the likelihood of hitting the ZLB. We show that this deflationary bias is particularly relevant for a CB with a symmetric dual mandate (i.e., minimizing deviations from inflation and employment), especially when facing demand shocks. But a strict inflation targeter cannot escape the suboptimal deflationary equilibrium either. The deflationary bias can be mitigated by targeting "shortfalls" instead of "deviations" from maximum employment and/or using flexible average inflation targeting. However, changing monetary policy strategy risks inflation expectations becoming entrenched above the target if the natural interest rate increases.
