Abstract:To improve the energy utilization efficiency of H2S decomposition by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD),a series of experiments are performed.Taking coaxial DBD reactive system as object,the influences of DBD's electrical parameters and reactor geometrical parameters on the energy input and H2S removal efficiency are studied from aspects of resonance characteristics and power characteristics.The experimental results show that the resonance behavior between discharge frequency and loading voltage affects direcdy the H2S removal efficiency.The removal efficiency reaches its maximum value at resonance frequency point.The reason that the loading voltage and reactor geometrical parameters have an effect on the size of resonance frequency can be attributed to the changes of dielectric equivalent capacitance.Moreover,the effective discharge power of DBD has quantitative rule with discharge frequency,loading voltage and reactor's geometrical parameters,i.e.P=A ·L·f· Vn.The energy input efficiency ηP is the largest at resonance frequency point when the loading voltage remains unchanged.If the other operating parameters remain unchanged,the longer the discharge area is,the higher the H2S removal efficiency is.The optimal discharge gap is 5 mm.

Abstract:The structure of a bipolar narrow pulsed dielectric barrier discharge reactor for water treatment is illustrated. Discharge characteristics of the reactor and its performance on dyeing wastewater treatment are investigated. Decolorization experiments of 100 mL indigo blue water solution by the reactor show that a removal rate up to 99.095% can be reached in 2.5 min.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a pulsed low electric field process for water disinfection. Electric intensity of 0.6-1.7 kV cm(-1) is applied. Experiments are performed with a 1.2 L axis-cylinder reactor. A bipolar pulsed power source with pulsed width of 25 mu s and frequency of 100-3000 Hz is used. Water conductivity of 3-200 mu s cm(-1) is investigated, which can significantly affect pulsed voltage-current waveforms and injected energy. Energy per pulse rises with increased water conductivity. The initial E. Coli density and water conductivity are two major factors influencing the disinfection. No disinfection effect is performed with deionized water of 3 mu s cm(-1). When water conductivity is 25 mu s cm(-1) and bacteria density is 104(-1)06 cfu ml(-1), significant disinfection effect is observed. More than 99% of the cells can be disinfected with an energy density of less than 70 J ml(-1), while water temperature is below 30..

Abstract:Water disinfection of E .coli by high frequency pulsed low electric fields was investigated .The effects of constructional ,electrical and aqueous parameters on disinfection efficiency and energy efficiency were evaluated .Experiments were performed with a 500 mL cylindrical reactor .Average electric intensity of 3‐12 kV/cm was applied and pulsed frequency was up to 20 000 Hz .Optimized structure of high voltage electrode were six equally distributed mesh electrodes with diameter of 40 mm .Both the disinfection efficiency and energy efficiency were enhanced by increasing the electric strength and pulse duration .Water conductivity could influence the pulsed waveforms and single pulse energy ,which changed the disinfection results . Reducing the initial bacterial density made the process more effective and easily realized sterilization .Pulsed frequency did not show any effect on disinfection ,but high frequency could greatly reduce treatment time .When pulsed voltage ,pulsed width ,water conductivity and initial bacteria density were 6 kV ,30 μs ,2 .5 μS/cm and 103‐106 cfu/mL ,respectively ,1‐2 logarithmic reduction were obtained with energy consumption less than 200 J/mL and water temperature lower than 40 ℃ .If initial bacterial density was less than 1 250 cfu/mL ,all the cells could be sterilized ,which was a non‐thermal processing .

Abstract:High-voltage(HV) discharges induce high-intensity electrical field that generates large quantities of electrons and radicals. Hence they are employed to control and remove pollutants. In this paper, we introduce several environmental applications of high-voltage discharge, such as removal of SO2, NOx, particles, VOCs and pollutants in water, ozone generation, sterilization and collection of micro-organism. For desulfuration and denitration using streamer corona discharges, heterogeneous oxidation of S(IV) is quicker than homogeneous oxidation, and increasing AC/DC, pulse power and energy density is the key for improving the removal efficiency. Electrostatic precipitator(ESP) has been developed for a long time, yet its improvement is impeded due to the inadequate development of device design and power technology, and reentrainment. Using ESP index instead of Deutsch Equation to guide ESP sizing and power optimization is conducive to improve ESP efficiency. When using HV discharge to produce ozone, the emphasis is on short-pulse power supply, additives and cooling. HV discharge is also employed to treat VOCs and waste water in various structures. The former one usually combines discharge with catalysis, while the latter includes discharge under or over liquid surface. However, both ——of them need to be improved in energy efficiency. HV discharge could deactivate micro-organism through radicals, UV or electrical field, yet it could also be used to collect micro-organisms while keeping their high activities. Nevertheless for environmental applications, the non-thermal plasma technology needs further development in pilot demonstration and integrated process.

Abstract:Bipolar pulsed discharge in the Gas-liquid-solid mixture was studied using a packed bed plasma reactor with gas bubbling. Effect of different packings on the treatment performance was investigated. Light emission and the active species formed during the discharge process were measured. Experimental results proved that bipolar pulsed discharge in the packed bed reactor with gas bubbling had a good performance on dye water decolorization. Color removal rate increased with the applied voltage. Packings had great influence on the color removal of the wastewater. Emission spectrum of the bipolar pulsed discharge in water-air mixture had a wider range and higher intensity. In addition, the concentration of the active species generated in the bipolar pulsed discharge system was proved to be higher than other studies.
Removal Factor Analysis of Chemical Oxygen Demand by Bipolar Pulsed Discharge in Dye Waste Water with Plasma Treatment

Abstract:The removal rule of chemical oxygen demand （COD） in the typical dye solution was investigated using a packed bed reactor by bipolar pulsed discharge in the air-water-solid mixture, and the value of COD in different conditions such as different voltages, air flow rates and initial concentrations was measured. Experimental results prove that the COD value of dye waste water will increase first and then decrease constantly at a high load voltage, while the COD value increase slowly to a certain extent at a low load voltage. The removal effect of COD is better when the air flow rate is higher and is worse when the initial concentration and conductivity of the dye waste water increase. It is found that the degradation effect on dyes with different functional groups is remarkable after the bipolar pulsed discharge treatment.

Abstract:Water treatment by bipolar pulsed discharge in the water-air-solid particle three-phase mixture is a newly developed and promising technology. In our present investigation, discharge characteristics of the bipolar pulsed discharge in the water-air-solid particle three-phase mixture have been investigated using a wire-cylinder electrode reactor packed with solid particles. Effect of the solid particles (conducting stainless steel fragments, dielectric glass beads and ceramic spheres) on the discharge characteristics has been studied. Experimental results show that electrical discharge occurs easily in the water-air-solid particle mixture than in water-air mixture for the same applied voltage. In addition, physical and dialectical characteristics of the solid particle significantly affect the applied voltage and the discharge current. A steeper front-edged and low tailing pulsed load voltage can be obtained when the discharge reactor is packed with dielectric spheres. At the same time, electrical discharges proved to be much stronger for the reactor packed with dielectric spheres than conductance material.

Abstract:研究了脉冲电压应用于处理染料废水的可行性以及处理效果。结果表明,处理过程中,合理的电导率对色度的去除起决定作用。试验确定的染料废水的脉冲电压处理条件为:脉冲幅值700V,脉宽4～10μs,频率50Hz,电导率在9mS/cm以上。经过10min处理后,色度去除率可达78%以上。从紫外和可见光谱图可以看出,脉冲电压处理10min后,染料的发色基团基本被破坏,染料浓度大幅度下降。

Abstract:Experiments were conducted to study the role of electrolysis-SBR in removing chromaticity and COD and electrolysis in improving biodegradability of pharmaceutical wastewater. The objective is to advance the knowledge of influence of residence time, voltage and pH on the electrolysis-SBR efficiency. The results showed that electrolysis-SBR could remove more than 90% of chromaticity and 85% of COD and electrolysis improved the biodegradability of pharmaceutical wastewater from 0.17 to 0.51 at 30 voltages. 7.0 of pH value could be advantageous to the removal of chromaticity. A retention time of 60 minutes was recommended for the process design of electrolysis.

Abstract:Bipolar pulsed discharge is an effective method for water treatment, which produces a large amount of active species during the discharge processes. Those active species can oxidize organic molecules dissolved in water or even get them completely mineralized. The formation rule of ozone in the air-water-solid mixture treated by bipolar pulsed discharges in different experiment conditions was investigated. The results show that the concentration of ozone increases with the increase of the applied voltage, but decreases with the increase of air flow rate. Gas phase ozone production differs with different packing glass beads in diameter. The highest ozone concentration is obtained when the reactor is packed with 9 mm glass beads. In addition, when solid packing materials have a lower Peak-Peak roughness values, more ozone is produced.

Abstract:The application of non-thermal plasma excited by strong electric fields is becoming a key technology on water treatment because of high efficiency and no second pollution. This paper presents a pulsed DBD plasma reactor using a coaxial plexiglass tube. The advantage of this structure is that the oxidants, such as hydroxyl radicals, generated by the discharge were mixed well with the wastewater and gas. The full contact of plasma and organic pollutant makes sure the efficient process. The aim of our research is that how to efficiently produce and utilize these oxidants. Through the emission spectrometer, hydroxyl radicals and oxygen free radicals were proved to be exist qualitatively. The concentration of Hr 2 rOr 2 r and Or 3 r were measured by related detectors to prove efficient generation of oxidants. Degradation of indigo carmine solution was attempted by this system. The effects of discharge time, discharge voltage, frequency, initial pH value, and different gas were studied. The degradation rate and the energy cost of indigo carmine will be obtained.

Abstract:Emission spectrum of the bipolar pulsed discharge in water-air mixture has been measured in the near-ultraviolet (UV) region using an Inspectrum 300 charge-coupled device (CCD) spectrograph. Effects of several parameters including peak-to-peak voltage, pulse repetitive frequency, etc., on the relative UV radiation intensity have been investigated. Experimental results show that bipolar pulsed discharge in water-air mixture emits strong UV radiation. The emission spectrum of the discharge has a wide range. The applied peak-to-peak voltage, pulse repetitive frequency, and air flow rate have positive effect on the relative intensity of the second positive band of nitrogen at 337.1 run. However, solution conductivity has negative effect.

Abstract:The treatment of dyeing wastewater is becoming a hot area of environmental field in many countries.In this paper,the dyeing wastewater is treated by application of electro-chemical method.The treatment effect of dyeing wastewater at different type of electrodes,different space and different electrolytic tank is studied.Results show that the meshy electrode and hollow electrode are found to be better than the plate electrode.The best electrode is the meshy electrode with8eyes.Shortening the electrode space might fasten the speed of reaction and lessen the energy consumption.Electrolytic tank with reel shape has better effect than the electrolytic tank with rectangle shape.It is concluded that the electro-chemical method has the significant efficiency for removing COD and chromaticity of the dyeing wastewater and it is a prospective treatment method.

Abstract:The effect of pulsed high-voltage discharge on mass transfer and reaction processes in a needle-plate reactor was studied. Bubble size distributions and characteristic parameters were determined by photography, implying that inlet air bubbles could be broken into smaller ones effectively by discharge. The mass transfer parameters including specific interfacial area (a), volumetric mass transfer coefficient (k L a), and liquid-side mass transfer coefficient (k L) were obtained by Danckwerts-plot, reflecting the mass transfer processes. In addition, 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) decomposition was determined under the same experimental conditions. The results showed that the conclusions of 4-CP removal were coincided with the statistical results of bubble images, illustrating that higher peak voltage, pulsed frequency and appropriate air flow rate are beneficial to mass transfer and reaction. However, there was a slight difference between 4-CP removal and mass transfer parameters at higher air flow rate. Therefore, it is more reasonable to optimize the operating conditions of a pulsed high-voltage discharge reactor via combining image acquisition and mass transfer parameters with the results of pollutant degradation.

Abstract:The pulse discharge plasma chemical process(PPCP) has been widely investigated to remove toxic compounds,and electrical parameters are directly related to the formation of discharge plasma and the removal efficiencies of contaminants,so it is necessary to make research on discharge characteristics under different conditions in order to provide reference for PPCP application.In the experiments,a Blumlein pulse-forming network(BPFN) type of narrow pulse generator and a wire-plate pulse plasma reactor were adopted.The influences of factors such as power supply capacitance,plate distance and dielectric barrier on discharge characteristics were investigated.The results show that increasing the power supply capacitance can improve the utilization efficiency of discharge energy;increasing the plate distance will result in higher peak voltage,lower peak current and shorter pulse width and achieve better waveforms;the dielectric barrier can help solving the spark discharge,and also improve the utilization efficiency of discharge energy.
