Abstract:This study synthesizes and characterizes luminescent ternary samarium complexes (S1–S4), formulated as [Sm(L) 3 (S) n ], where the variable n ranges from 2 for monodentate ligands to 1 for bidentate ligands. In the formulation, L represents Trifluoroacetylacetone (tfaa) and S signifies various Lewis bases i.e. Tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO, S1), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, S2), Neocuproine (NeoC, S3) and Bathocuproine (BathoC, S4). The prepared Sm(III) complexes were characterized through various analytical as well as spectral techniques. The peaks observed at around 415 and 520 cm −1 in FTIR spectra imply the formation of coordination bond between Sm(III) ion and –O and –N atoms of tfaa and neural moieties, respectively. In NMR spectra of complexes, diketone and neutral ligand protons exhibit notable downfield and upfield shifts, reflecting the paramagnetic influence of samarium ion. The complexes exhibit thermal stability upto 240 °C, thereby demonstrating their suitability for utilization in display devices. Photophysical characteristics were assessed through photoluminescence (PL) and excited state lifetime measurements. The complexes exhibited a hyperintense peak at around 648 nm ( 4 G 5/2 → 6 H 9/2 ) which is sensitive to ligand environment and associated with the characteristic orange-red emission. The comprehensive investigation supports the potential of these complexes in photonic and display devices.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of four octacoordinated complexes of [Sm(TFPB) 3 ] with different neutral ligands have been successfully performed. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of neutral ligands in enhancing the emission intensity of Sm(III) ion by investigating their light-emitting characteristics. Dominance of hypersensitive transition 4 G 5/2 → 6 H 9/2 is observed which suggests the asymmetry in the vicinity of Sm(III) ion in these complexes, reinforced by asymmetry ratio. Stark-splitting in the magnetic dipole 4 G 5/2 → 6 H 5/2 transition was consistent across most complexes, but [Sm(TFPB) 3 (topo) 2 ] displayed a different pattern due to monodentate auxiliary moiety, which does not provide as much structural rigidity and stability as found in the other complexes. Various analyses including IR, NMR, CV, TGA, UV and colorimetry, supported possible applications of synthesized complexes in devices based on photonics, sensors, magnets and other technological fields.

Abstract:The samarium complexes with carbacylamidophosphate type ligand—dimethyl-N-bezoylamidophosphate and different ancillary ligands have been synthesized and their luminescence properties have been investigated. On irradiation with ultraviolet radiation the complexes display SmIII-centered intensive luminescence in visible (red–orange emission) and near-infrared spectral regions both in solid state and in non-aqueous solutions. The color coordinates, quantum yield and decay curves of the complexes are discussed in detail. Values of the emission decay times in the visible region lie in the range of 0.1–0.2 ms. It was shown that bands intensity distribution in the luminescence spectra for complexes under consideration depends on the composition of the complex and differs for the crystalline samples and the solutions. The quantum yield for the complexes solutions varies in the range 0.83–1.75%. The intramolecular energy transfer in the complexes is discussed. The obtained complexes can be considered as promising material for an emitting component of OLEDs or fluorescent markers.

Abstract:We report a novel ytterbium complex [Yb(tta)(3)DFQZ] which exhibited obviously enhanced two-photon sensitized near-infrared luminescence properties of Yb3+ compared to the usually reported Yb3+ complexes, with a two-photon excitation action cross-section of 22 GM under excitation at 860 nm at 298 K. Unlike other lanthanide complexes, [Yb(tta)(3)DFQZ] under nitrogen exhibited quantum yields for the sensitized Yb3+ luminescence that increased with increasing temperature. [Yb(tta)(3)DFQZ] was dispersed in a polymer film to prepare a near-infrared-emission sensor that made it possible to conveniently detect the temperature in a range from 178 to 378 K without the influence of O-2, via a luminescence spectrum of Yb3+ in the film. This provided a promising solution to the long-standing problem that complex calculations and complicated structures are usually needed for eliminating the influence of O2 on temperature sensing with a luminescent sensor.
Enhancement of Photostability Ageing of Samarium Complexes in PMMA Films

Abstract:Several ligands have been selected to synthesize novel samarium complexes known for possessing good PLQY and excellent photostability ageing under weather and humidity conditions. New routes are open to design samarium complexes with high potential end‐use for sustainable optoelectronic devices. In this study, a set of β‐diketonate samarium(III) complexes–namely, [Sm(TTA)3Phen], [Sm(TTA)3DPEPO], [Sm(TTA)3Bipy], and [Sm(TTA)3Pyra]–has been synthesized and comprehensively characterized. Upon excitation, these complexes exhibit distinct emissions at 566 nm, 610 nm, 650 nm, and 710 nm, respectively, corresponding to the electronic transitions 4G5/2→6H5/2, 4G5/2→6H7/2, 4G5/2→6H9/2, and 4G5/2→6H11/2. Notably, the most pronounced pinkish‐red emission is associated with the peak at 650 nm. Furthermore, the [Sm(TTA)3DPEPO] complex displays a remarkable photoluminescence quantum yield, reaching up to 15.77 % in a PMMA film matrix. The investigation also involved a prolonged examination lasting over 1200 hours, during which PMMA films doped with the samarium complexes were subjected to humidity and weather conditions to evaluate their photoluminescence stability. The results indicate consistent emissions throughout the humidity test, with an eventual cessation after 1200 hours–except in the case of [Sm(TTA)3Phen] under weather conditions. The enduring emission in this scenario is attributed to the robustness of the phenanthroline ligand, thus highlighting its role in enhancing the durability of the complex.

Abstract:Four eight-coordinated luminescent samarium complexes of type [Sm(hfpd)3L2] and [Sm(hfpd)3L'] [where hfpd = 1,1,1,5,5,5-Hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione L = tri-octyl-phosphine oxide (TOPO) and L' = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), neocuproine (neoc) and bathocuproine (bathoc) were synthesized via a stoichiometrically controlled approach. This allows for precise control over the stoichiometry of the complexes, leading to reproducible properties. This investigation focuses on understanding the impact of secondary ligands on the luminescent properties of these complexes. Infrared (IR) spectra provided information about the molecular structures, whereas 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra confirmed these structural details along with the coordination of ligands to trivalent Sm ion. The UV-vis spectra revealed the molar absorption coefficient and absorption bands associated with the hfpd ligand and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy demonstrated intense orange-red emission (648 nm relative to 4G5/2 → 6H9/2) from the complexes. The Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) triangles indicated that the complexes emitted warm orange red light with color coordinates (x, y) ranging from (0.62, 0.36) to (0.40, 0.27). The investigation of the band gap as well as color parameters confirms the utility of these complexes in displays and LEDs.

Herein, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm co-doped LuScO3 single crystal fibers (SCFs) had been delicately grown by Laser Heated Pedestal Growth (LHPG) method. The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry was realized based on the Er3+:4S3/2→4I15/2 (545~593nm) and Tm3+:3H4→3H6 (750~850nm) NTCLs. Such an obvious FIR-temperature change through the NTCLs presents an outstanding optical thermometric performance, yielding the high temperature sensing with wide range. The maximum value of absolute sensitivity was 2 orders of magnitude higher than the temperature measurement using TCLs. More importantly, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm:LuScO3 SCFs exhibit superior thermal stability that will be helpful to obtain high precision temperature measurement. Hence, our findings might offer some useful inspiration for exploring high-sensitivity luminescent thermometers and enriching the research of temperature measuring materials.

Luminescent Ln3+-based silsesquioxanes with a β-diketonate antenna ligand: toward the design of efficient temperature sensors

Abstract:We report the synthesis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, and luminescence measurements of a novel family of luminescent cage-like tetranuclear silsesquioxanes (PhSiO 1.5 ) 8 (LnO 1.5 ) 4 (O)(C 5 H 8 O 2 ) 6 (EtOH) 2 (CH 3 CN) 2 ⋅2CH 3 CN (where Ln = Tb, 1 ; Tb/Eu, 2 ; and Gd, 3 ), featuring seven-coordinated lanthanide ions arranged in a one-capped trigonal prism geometry. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit characteristic Tb 3+ and Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ -related emissions, respectively, sensitized by the chelating antenna acetylacetonate (acac) ligands upon excitation in the UV and visible spectral regions. Compound 3 is used to assess the energies of the triplet states of the acac ligand. For compound 1 , theoretical calculations on the intramolecular energy transfer and multiphonon rates indicate a thermal balance between the 5 D 4 Stark components, while the mixed Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ analog 2 , with a Tb:Eu ratio of 3:1, showcases intra-cluster Tb 3+ -to-Eu 3+ energy transfer, calculated theoretically as a function of temperature. By utilizing the intensity ratio between the 5 D 4 → 7 F 5 (Tb 3+ ) and 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 (Eu 3+ ) transitions in the range 11–373 K, we demonstrate the realization of a ratiometric luminescent thermometer with compound 2 , operating in the range 11–373 K with a maximum relative sensitivity of 2.0% K −1 at 373 K. These findings highlight the potential of cage-like silsesquioxanes as versatile materials for optical sensing-enabled applications.

Abstract:In this comprehensive study, we investigated the structure, optical, and thermal aspects of [Sm(C4H5O6)(C4H4O6)][3H2O], a samarium based metal-organic framework. Testing and exploring advanced semiempirical quantum models, we provide some insights into ground-state molecular properties within the solid metal-organic framework. The single-excitation configuration interaction approach within the spectroscopic method INDO/S-CIS was utilized in the computation of UV spectra, singlet, and triplet excited states for the uncoordinated organic component. We also exploited the established Judd-Ofelt theory to elucidate the spectroscopic properties, allowing us to predict various attributes, including absorption and luminescence traits. The inclusion of thermogravimetric analysis exposes a multifaceted thermal decomposition process. Moreover, this analysis was explored in the determination of activation energies associated with distinct stages of decomposition.

Optical Temperature Sensing Characteristics of Sm3+ Doped YAG Single Crystal Fiber Based on Luminescence Emission

Abstract:A series of YAG: x mol%Sm3+ single crystal (SC) materials, in which xis 0.3, 0.5, 1, 2, respectively, have been synthesized through laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) method. The down-conversion luminescence properties of prepared fluorescent materials were investigated under a 405 nm laser. According to the results, 0.5 mol% was selected as the optimal doping concentration, and the integrated YAG single crystal fiber (SCF) with end Sm3+ doped was further fabricated. Then the optical temperature sensing character-istics were studied by the technique of the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) in detail. It shows that 4F3/2 and 4G5/2 of Sm3+ ions are thermally coupled energy levels. The FIR of the 4F3/2/4G5/2 -> 6H5/2 increases monotonously as temperature rises, and its temperature measurement range can be extended to 1178 K. The maximum absolute sensitivity and maximum relative sensitivity are 3.046 x 10-4 K-1(1129 K) and 5.033 x 10-3 K-1 (500 K), respectively. Additionally, the FIRs of various emission bands from 4G5/2 -> 6H5/2, 7/2 and the FIR of the emission sub-bands from 4G5/2 -> 6H9/2 exhibit temperature dependence in 303-1028 K and 303-878 K, respectively. Red-to-ultraviolet Light Chargeable Sm2+-activated Deep-Red Persistent Phosphor for Simultaneous Bioimaging and Bio-Temperature Sensing

Abstract:Persistent phosphor-based bio-applications do not need real-time photo-excitation and do not suffer from disturbance of stray excitation light, auto-fluorescence of the measured substance and heat produced by excitation. However, the persistent phosphors that well match the optical biological windows are deficient. Here, we report for the first-time divalent samarium (Sm2+) activated persistent phosphor with dual-functionality for simultaneous bioimaging and bio-temperature sensing. The persistent phosphor is Sm2+ and Nd(3+)codoped SrAl2Si2O8 that can be photo-charged in 250-660 nm and shows deep-red persistent luminescence (PersL) originated from both the 4f(5)5d(1) -> 4f(6) and D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions that well match the first optical biological window. The intense PersL output shows the effective operation temperature range of 240-340 K, covering the physiological temperature range of 298-325 K. It is found that quantum tunneling dominates both the visible light including red light charging process and PersL generating process. The temperature dependent PersL intensity ratio of the thermally coupled 4f(5)5d(1) -> (4)f(6) emission band and the D-5(0) -> F-7(J) emission lines is studied and a maximum relative sensitivity of 4.81 % K-1 at 200 K and 2.17-1.82 % K-1 in the physiological temperature range are achieved. The dual-functionality of SrAl2Si2O8:1 %Sm2+,1 %Nd(3+ )for simultaneous bioimaging and bio-temperature sensing is demonstrated. Our findings open up new scenarios for multifunctional applications of Sm2+.
High-sensitivity NaYF4:Yb3+/Ho3+/Tm3+ phosphors for optical temperature sensing based on thermally coupled and non-thermally coupled energy levels

Abstract:Non-contact optical temperature sensors are highly sought after by researchers due to their satisfactory temperature resolution (δ(T) < 0.1 °C), high relative thermal sensitivity (Sr > 1% °C-1), fast temporal response (t < 0.1 s), and long-term optical stability. In this study, NaYF4:Yb3+/Ho3+/Tm3+ upconversion nanoparticles were prepared by a solvothermal method, and their crystal structure, microscopic morphology, and luminescence mechanism, together with the temperature sensing properties of the specimens, were investigated. Under 980 nm laser excitation, the specimens exhibited strong upconversion luminescence, and the emission peaks corresponded to the characteristic energy level jumps of Ho3+ and Tm3+, respectively. The temperature-dependent luminescence spectra of the samples were investigated based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique over a temperature gradient of 295-495 K. The samples are based on thermally coupled energy levels (TCLs: 1G4(1,2) → 3H6(Tm3+)) and non-thermally coupled energy levels (NTCLs: 3F3 → 3H6(Tm3+) and 5F3 → 5I8(Ho3+), 3F3 → 3H6(Tm3+) and 1G4 → 3H6(Tm3+), 3F3 → 3H6(Tm3+) and 5F5 → 5I8(Ho3+), 3F3 → 3H6(Tm3+) and 5F4 → 5I8(Ho3+)) for temperature sensing performance. The maximum absolute sensitivity (Sa), relative sensitivity (Sr), and minimum temperature resolution δ(T) were found to be 0.0126 K-1 (495 K), 1.7966% K-1 (345 K), and 0.0167 K, respectively, which are better than those of most sensing materials, and the simultaneous action of multiple coupling energy levels can further improve the temperature precision. This study indicates that the sample has a good value for optical temperature measurement and also provides new ideas for the exploration of other high-quality optical temperature sensing materials.

Abstract:In this work, based on two ligands of 2,4-difluorobenzoic acid (2,4-DFBA) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), a series of new lanthanide complexes [Ln2(2,4-DFBA)6phen2, Ln = Tb 1a, Eu 1b, Gd 1c) and Tb,Eu co-doped complex [2, Tb1.976Eu0.0244(2,4-DFBA)6phen2] were successfully synthesized. It was found that 2 is an interesting multichannel readout pattern and self-calibrated temperature sensor, with a wide temperature sensing range in 77–300 K. It shows a high sensitivity up to 2.3%/K.

Spectroscopic studies of TeO2-based glasses doped with Sm3+ ions and its use as an optical temperature sensor

Abstract:This study reports the synthesis and characterization of glasses in the (100-x) 65TeO2-15Li2O-20ZnO + x Sm2O3 system doped with Sm2O3, denoted as Sm3+: TLZ glasses, with varying doping concentrations from 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.35, 0.5, and 1 mol%. The structural and optical properties, as well as the temperature dependence of luminescence, were investigated. Excitation at 405 nm resulted in strong orange-red luminescence at 566, 600, and 646 nm. The local environment surrounding Sm3+ ions was explored using the intensity ratio of electric and magnetic dipole transitions. The non-radiative energy transfer between neighboring Sm3+ ions was evaluated using the Inokuti-Hirayama model, allowing for the determination of the critical transfer distance. The temperature dependence of luminescence, displayed by Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates, exhibited a monotonic change from (0.611, 0.387) at 295 K to (0.605, 0.393) at 479 K. The Sm3+:TLZ glasses doped with 0.15 mol% showed the highest relative thermal sensitivity of 0.10%K-1 at 479 K, suggesting their potential as luminescent thermometers.

Abstract:Trivalent lanthanide ions show interesting optical properties. Keeping this in view, five Sm(III) complexes were synthesized using 4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran-3-carboxaldehyde (L) as primary ligand along with 1,10-Phenanthroline (Phen); Bipyridine (Bipy); Bathophenanthroline (Bathophen) and Neocuproine (Neo) as secondary ligands. Characterizations of prepared complexes were carried out by means of FTIR, elemental analysis, UV–vis, ESI-MS+, thermal studies, PXRD, FESEM, and luminescence studies. Thermal studies confirmed the good thermal stability of complexes. Sharp peaks in X-ray diffractograms suggest their crystalline nature. The photoluminescence process in complexes has been thoroughly studied and discussed in liquid and powder state. The complexes show 4G5/2→6Hj transitions where j = 5/2, 7/2, and 9/2, analogous to characteristic emission peaks of Sm(III) ion at ~ 566, 601, and 648 nm, respectively. The complexes demonstrate intense emission peaks at ~ 601 in liquid and ~ 648 nm in a powder state, which is responsible for bright orange and red emission, respectively. The synergistic effect of secondary ligands was responsible for longer luminescence lifetime and enhanced emission intensity in ternary complexes. Attractive photoluminescence properties of complexes could play a vital role in electroluminescent devices, bio-assays, liquid lasers, OLEDs, etc.

Sm(Iii)-Bi(Iii) Heterometallic Complexes with Aminopolycarboxylate Ligand: Structure, Thermal Stability and Spectral Property

Abstract:Samnium(III)-bismuth(III) heterobimetallic complexes, SmBi(edta)(NO3)(2)center dot 7H(2)O (1) and SmBi(dtpa)(NO3)center dot 3.5H(2)O(2) (edta=ethylenediaminetetraacetate, dtpa=diethylenetriaminepentaacetate), were synthesized and characterized by means of X-ray single crystal diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, elemental analysis, 1CP, FT-IR spectra and thermal analysis. The structure analysis revealed that 1 is in crystalline and 2 is in non-crystal state. Complex 1 crystallizes in monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n with a=1.2622(2) nm b=0.81157(15) nm, c=2.3634(5) nm, beta=105.340(2)degrees, V=2.3347(8) nm(3), Z=4, D-c=2.563 g center dot cm(-3), mu=10.125 mm(-1). Bridging edta(4-) anions between Bi(III) atoms and Sm(III) atoms result into infinite 3D network structure. Thermal decomposition of the two complexes proceeds in similar stages, i.e., dehydration, pyrolysis of ligand, and decomposition of salt, and the final residue is oxide. In addition, the spectral properties have been studied through FL spectra and UV-Vis DRS. The two complexes exhibit one broad band Bi 6s6p-6s(2) emission under UV excitation and the characteristic Sm3+ ion (4)G(5/2)-> H-6(J/2) (J=5, 7, 9, 11) transitions under visible light excitation, respectively.

Abstract:The precise and real-time sensing of the temperature within the physiological range is of great significance in biology and medicine. Here, a Zn-based metal-organic framework (MOF) named Zn-TCOMA is synthesized with good SHG performance due to its unique structure of the ligand and 3D frameworks. By encapsulating the two-photon fluorescent dye DMASE into the pores of Zn-TCOMA, the composite Zn-TCOMA superset of DMASE is obtained and simultaneously exhibits SHG response and two-photon fluorescence. Utilizing the intensity ratio between two-photon fluorescence of DMASE and SHG signal of Zn-TCOMA, Zn-TCOMA superset of DMASE exhibits ratiometric temperature sensing property at physiological temperature region of 20 similar to 60 degrees C with high sensitivity. This MOF thermometer also shows excellent repeatability, good biocompatibility, and high temperature resolution of 0.018 degrees C, opening a new avenue to develop diverse optical thermometric or thermographic applications in biotechnology or other areas. Abstract:Dual-phase compounds consisting of CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) and NaYF4:Ho3+ nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared, and their phase compositions and luminescence properties were characterized. The temperature-dependent fluorescence spectra of compounds were measured under 447 nm excitation in the temperature range from 123 K to 433 K. With the increase of temperature, the fluorescence intensities of PQDs and NPs show different decreasing trends due to different temperature quenching mechanisms. Then, the temperature sensing properties of compounds are studied via fluorescence intensity ratios (FIRs) of 529 nm (CsPbBr3) to 647 nm and 751 nm (NaYF4:Ho3+). The result shows that I529/I751 owns super large absolute sensitivity (385 K−1), high relative sensitivity (5.13%∙K−1) and distinct optimum temperature uncertainty (0.00345 K). Therefore, this compound may be used as highly sensitive temperature sensors.
