Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed electrochemical regioselective annulation of 6-phenylpurines and 6-phenyl-7-deazapurines with alkynes has been developed. Electricity is used to recycle the active rhodium-based catalyst, promote the evolution of H2 and help in reducing the reaction temperature. This mild and green method enables a broad substrate scope and wide functional group tolerance, providing a new series of polycyclic purinium and 7-deazapurinium salts in high yields. Mechanistic studies show that the five-member rhodium(III) species and purinoisoquinolinium-coordinated rhodium(I) complex are the two key intermediates in this transformation.

Abstract:The combination of achiral Cp*Rh(III) with chiral carboxylic acids (CCAs) represents an efficient catalytic system in transition metal-catalyzed enantioselective C–H activation. However, this hybrid catalysis is limited to redox-neutral C-H activation reactions and the adopt to oxidative enantioselective C–H activation remains elusive and pose a significant challenge. Herein, we describe the development of an electrochemical Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed enantioselective C‒H annulation of sulfoximines with alkynes enabled by chiral carboxylic acid (CCA) in an operationally friendly undivided cell at room temperature. A broad range of enantioenriched 1,2-benzothiazines were obtained in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield and 98:2 er). The practicality of this method was demonstrated by scale-up reaction in a batch reactor with external circulation. A crucial chiral Cp*Rh(III) intermediate was isolated, characterized, and transformed, providing rational support for a Rh(III)/Rh(I) electrocatalytic cycle.

Abstract:Abstract A Rh-catalyzed electrochemical vinylic C–H annulation of acrylamides with alkynes has been developed in an undivided cell, affording cyclic products in good to excellent yield. Divergent syntheses of α-pyridones and cyclic imidates are accomplished by employing N-phenyl acrylamides and N-tosyl acrylamides as substrates, respectively. Additionally, excellent regioselectivities are achieved when using unsymmetrical alkynes. This electrochemical process is environmentally benign compared to traditional transition metal-catalyzed C–H annulations because it avoids the use of stoichiometric metal oxidants. DFT calculations elucidated the reaction mechanism and origins of substituent-controlled chemoselectivity. The sequential C–H activation and alkyne insertion under rhodium catalysis leads to the seven-membered ring vinyl-rhodium intermediate. This intermediate undergoes either the classic neutral concerted reductive elimination to produce α-pyridones, or the ionic stepwise pathway to produce cyclic imidates.

Abstract:Cp*Rh(III)‐catalyzed regioselective C−H annulation and alkenylation of 2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes have been developed. The cationic Cp*Rh(III) catalytic system containing FeCl3 additive enables annulation of 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes, providing efficient access to 5,7‐diarylated 2‐quinolinones. The reaction pathway can be switched to alkenylation with [Cp*RhCl2]2 as the catalyst, NaOAc as the additive and HOAc as the solvent, affording C6‐alkenylated 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones in high yields. These protocols accommodate a wide range of substrates with good functional group compatibility.

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed tandem arylation/cyclization reaction of 3-(ortho-boronated aryl) conjugated enones with unactivated alkynes is reported. By using a rhodium(I)/chiral-diene complex as the catalyst, the protocol was processed smoothly to provide various 2,3-disubstituted indene compounds in high yields with excellent regioselectivities and enantioselectivities. The approach outlined herein is appealing, as simple diarylalkynes, diakylalkynes, and alkyl(aryl)alkynes are the starting materials.

Abstract:An electrochemical approach to promote the ortho-C-H alkylation of (hetero)arenes via rhodium catalysis under mild conditions is described. This approach features mild conditions with high levels of regio- and monoselectivity that tolerate a variety of aromatic and heteroaromatic groups and offers a widely applicable method for late-stage diversification of complex molecular architectures including tryptophan, estrone, diazepam, nucleosides, and nucleotides. Alkyl boronic acids and esters and alkyl trifluoroborates are demonstrated as suitable coupling partners. The isolation of key rhodium intermediates and mechanistic studies provided strong support for a rhodium(III/IV or V) regime.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic compounds are widely used in materials science, so it is highly desirable to develop an efficient and practical approach to them. In this paper, a novel, efficient and practical method for the rhodium(III)-catalyzed desulfination of sodium arenesulfinates and oxidative annulation with alkynes has been developed, and the corresponding polycyclic aromatic compounds with multiple substituents were prepared in moderate to good yields. The reactions proceeded through sequential rhodium(III)-catalyzed desulfination, intermolecular addition of aryl-Rh(III) complexes to dialkyl but-2-ynedioates and diarylalkynes, and intramolecular oxidative annulation via C-H activation. The present method is the first example of the oxidative annulation of arene derivatives with two different alkynes. Therefore, it should afford a useful strategy for the synthesis of polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Abstract:The selective rhodium-catalyzed functionalization of arenes is greatly facilitated by oxidizing directing groups that act both as directing groups and internal oxidants. We report density functional theory (B3LYP and M06) investigations on the mechanism of rhodium(III)-catalyzed redox coupling reaction of N-phenoxyacetamides with alkynes. The results elucidated the role of the internal oxidizing directing group, and the role of Rh(III)/Rh(I) and Rh(III)/Rh(V) catalysis of C-H functionalizations. A novel Rh(III)-Rh(V)-Rh(III) cycle successfully rationalizes recent experimental observations by Liu and Lu et al. ( Liu , G. Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013 , 52 , 6033 ) on the reactions of N-phenoxyacetamides with alkynes in different solvents. Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis confirms the identity of Rh(V) intermediate in the catalytic cycle.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed directed C-H functionalization has emerged as a powerful and straightforward tool to construct C-C bonds and C-N bonds. Among these processes, the intramolecular annulative alkene hydroarylation reaction has received much attention because this intramolecular annulation can produce more complex and high value-added structural motifs found in numerous natural products and bioactive molecules. Despite remarkable progress, these annulative protocols developed to date remain limited to hydroarylation and functionalization of one side of alkenes, thus largely limiting the structural diversity and complexity. Herein, we developed a rhodium(iii)-catalyzed tandem annulative arylation/amidation reaction of aromatic tethered alkenes to deliver a variety of 2,3-dihydro-3-benzofuranmethanamine derivatives bearing an all-carbon quaternary stereo center by employing 3-substituted 1,4,2-dioxazol-5-ones as an amidating reagent to capture the transient C(sp(3))-Rh intermediate. Notably, by simply changing the directing group, a second, unsymmetrical ortho C-H amidation/annulation can be achieved to provide tricyclic dihydrofuro[3,2-f]quinazolinones in good yields.

Abstract:Electrosynthesis is recognized as one of the most powerful and sustainable methods in organic chemistry. Recently, electrochemically enabled annulations of carbon‐carbon triple bonds have been successfully achieved, and have broadened prospects for the application of the emerging method with cyclization of alkynes. Thus, herein we outline the recent progress made on electrochemically enabled annulations of alkynes. Abstract:The cycloaddition and annulation reactions of Achmatowicz rearrangement products (ARPs) are critically important to the construction of molecular complexity and the total synthesis of natural products. However, this field is still blemished by the shortage of enantioselective (3+2) reactions of ARPs. Herein, we report the highly enantio-, diastereo-, and regioselective (3+2) annulations of ARPs with nucleophilic alpha-thioacyl Rh(I)-carbenes under Rh(I)/(R)-BINAP catalysis, producing bicyclic dihydrothiophenes with multiple functionalities, three continuous chiral centers, and five prochiral centers in up to 97% yields and 99:1 er. Mechanistically, the migratory insertion following anticoordination is suggested to determine the enantio- and regioselectivities and accounts for the nucleophilic character of alpha-thioacyl Rh(I)-carbenes. DFT calculations revealed that enantioinduction originates from the steric discrimination of (R)- and (S)-ARPs by the chiral ligand.

Abstract:A rhodium(III)-catalyzed enantioselective C–H activation/annulation process is disclosed. With a catalyst derived from a chiral CpRh(III) complex and a chiral acid, the direct annulation reactions between 1-aryl isoquinoline derivatives and alkynes take place smoothly to afford a series of chiral azoniahelicenes in excellent yields and enantioselectivity (up to 99% yield and 96% ee).
