Abstract:Based on summarizing and analyzing the development,characteristics and problems of the existing architecture of manufacturing execution system(MES),a functional architecture of MES was proposed,which was oriented to manufacturing enterprises in China.By taking the production management model as the core,the proposed functional architecture defined the main functions of the production management model and the information flows transferring between these functions.Furthermore,maintenance management,quality management and inventory management, which would affect the production,were provided as the main functional models,and the information exchanges between them and production management were also presented.Additionally,in order to ensure scalability of this functional architecture,other functional models affecting the production were also defined.Finally,an application of the functional architecture to guide the design and establishment of the MES software oriented to the process industry of China was introduced to demonstrate the practicability and completeness.
Multi-agent production scheduling model of steel enterprise based on OPM/MAS

Abstract:Agent-oriented modeling tools have many deficiencies in uniformity, flexibility, interaction ability and logic verification capability, which hinder the research and design of muti-agent systems. An object-process methodology/multi-agent system(OPM/MAS) agent-oriented modeling method is introduced to express the abstractions of the complex system by using graphics and natural language. The function, structure and dynamic behavior of the system can be integrated in a refinery and unified model, and logic verification is available. OPM/MAS has advantages of flexibility and expressiveness. The application in the production scheduling of the steel industry shows the advantage of OPM/MAS as a modeling method for complex multi-agent systems.

Abstract:The plans made by customer oriented ERP system for the whole enterprise should be executed based on the actual conditions of plants. But there are often some differences between plans made by planning floor and actual capabilities of plants because of the limits of ERP itself, dynamic characteristics of plants and a lot of undetermined factors in plants. So Manufacturing Execution Systems were created to solve this problem. They are execution oriented information systems. MES provides the critical link to fill the gap between ERP and control systems. MES can execute automatically production plans made by planning floor, extract the correct information for ERP from collected real time data. MES enables information systems to be interconnected with each other closely and production departments to work in harmony. Consequently, enterprises get maximum profits. In this paper, we explain why MES was created and introduce the development of MES. Based on MESA model, a MES functional model is proposed that comprises two major parts, one related with plan execution and plant management and the other related with data collection and processing. There are 10 functions in the model.

Abstract:A multi-period bi-level integrated planning and scheduling model was formulated by considering demand and utility uncertainties in order to reduce the effects of uncertain factors in production process on production planning and scheduling.Demand and utility uncertainties were dealt with separately in planning and scheduling layers according to the difference of time scale.In planning layer,chance constraint stochastic programming was introduced to describe the demand uncertainty.An uncertain discrete-time linear programming model was formulated based on discrete-time modeling method.The fluctuations of production rate and deviations from the reference limits of inventory were considered.In scheduling layer,the fuzzy theory was utilized to describe the utility uncertainty.An uncertain continuoustime mixed-integer linear programming model related to multistage multipurpose batch process was formulated based on unit-specific event-based continuous-time modeling method.The bi-level planning and scheduling models were iteratively solved by rolling horizon optimization strategy.The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model wvas illustrated through a benchmark example from literatures.The proposed method can effectively reduce the effects of the two uncertainties and increase the utilization of equipments and utilities.

Abstract:As iron and steel products demand becomes increasingly diversified and batch reduced, make-to-order production has gradually satisfied the demand of modern iron and steel enterprises. It is significant for optimization of the make-to-order production planning to guarantee punctual delivery considering inventory, production capacity, processes and product specification. A multi-objective mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model is formulated to optimize the production, and a hybrid particle swarm optimization algorithm is developed to solve the model. A case study based on the order data of a steel and iron enterprise is presented. Compared with the optimization strategy upon particle swarm optimization and manual scheduling, the proposed optimization model and strategy effectively reduce losses caused by back order, inventory storage and unbalanced production capacity, and provide a reference and guidance for the operation.

Abstract:When the programming-based method and multi-agent system (MAS) are applied in integrated manufacturing planning and scheduling, difficulties such as it is hard to model the problem and it costs much time to get a solution are met. In this paper, a new Workflow-based Hierarchy Scheduling Model (WBHSM) is proposed. Process-oriented modeling is adopted to describe planning process and scheduling process. Then the Cooperative Workflow-based Integrated Scheduling System (CWISS) and relative algorithm are put forward. An example is showed.

Abstract:Currently, manufacturing execution systems (MES) are widely used in industries. Since the manufacturing execution systems is a dynamic process that comprises of production plans, machines, and resources, a scheduling strategy of great significance for rapid respond to both orders and shop floor processing variation. This paper presents developments of reactive and proactive scheduling methods on both order-oriented level and processing-oriented level. Further, an integrated scheduling strategy is devised based on the aforementioned approaches. The scheduling strategy exploits the feature of each specific strategy and complements their capabilities in order to process real-time events. The scheduling system generates a good quality schedule, which execution is performed by the triggers. A practical production case is chosen as an example to exam the proposed scheduling strategy. Results show the efficiency of the integrated scheduling strategy in production plan and real-time event processing.

Abstract:Aimed at the shortages of MES that couldn't realize dynamic quality control well, a framework of MES oriented to dynamic quality control was proposed after dynamic quality control and ERP/MESIPCS three-tier enterprise integration infrastructure were studied, and the quality function models of MES were analyzed. According to the framework and the key technologies of MES, the dynamic quality control model was provided and the data acquisition and system integration models were established. The development of MES oriented to dynamic quality control for a PCB enterprise was given. Through data acquisition, quality analysis and quality control model, this system realizes dynamic on-line control of PCB products.

Abstract:To solve the problem of scheduling the utilization plan and maintenance plan of Electric Multiple Units(EMU) for EMU depots,on the premise of known EMU routes,an integer programming model was built for the integrative scheduling of EMU utilization plan and maintenance plan with both EMU utilization routes and the regulations of EMU inspection and maintenance as the main constraints,with the minimization of the quantity of EMU and the cost of the EMU maintenance as the optimization objectives.The feasible utilization path set for EMU was solved according to the possible operation conditions as well as the constraints of EMU inspection and maintenance.Based on this set,the simulated annealing algorithm to solve the model was designed.By analyzing an example,it is validated that the proposed model and algorithm can effectively solve the problem of scheduling EMU utilization plan and maintenance plan.

Abstract:Successful capacity planning and production scheduling is built on the understanding of market opportunities and the costs of capacity, production, sourcing, inventory, and distribution over the planning horizon. Increasingly, companies attempt to integrate capacity planning and production scheduling to improve upon the commonly used sequential decision process, but most related research works fail to capture the granularity of actual operational decisions and therefore may overlook potential cost-saving opportunities. The contributions of this study include: (1) a detailed integrated capacity and production scheduling model with multiple discrete and continuous options for varying short and medium-term capacity, (2) a heuristic algorithm that exploits the problem structure to solve the nonlinear mixed integer problem, (3) an evaluation of the value of the integrated model relative to traditional practice and its sensitivity to parameters, (4) a review of past contributions to integrated planning, particularly focused on IJPR, and (5) a case study originated from a world-class automobile manufacturer illustrating how the model can be applied and confirming its value relative to hierarchical and less detailed modelling approaches.

Abstract:Existing production scheduling research has made great effort to integrate multiple production-related actives to achieve efficient product supply, such as the integration of production and transportation, and the integration of production and equipment operation and maintenance (O&M). However, rare studies are executed to investigate the integration of production, transportation and O&M, which may lead to inefficient supply plans. Encouraged by this, we consider a novel integrated scheduling problem, in which two-stage hybrid flow shop scheduling for spare parts manufacturing, transportation scheduling of the third-party logistics (3PL) and operational strategies of complex equipment are considered simultaneously. To tackle it, a mixed-integer linear programming model is constructed to minimize total production costs, minimize transportation costs and maximize operational utility of the equipment. Furthermore, a two-stage memetic algorithm (TSMA) is designed for addressing the problem. It employs a five-layer encoding method for chromosome representation and three well-tailored initialization methods to generate a high-quality initial population. In the first optimization stage, some problem-specific operators, including three crossovers, two mutations, and an entity-oriented local search operator, are proposed to improve its search capability. Two cost-saving strategies devised in the second optimization stage are designed to further optimize the optimal Pareto solutions generated in the previous stage. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed designs and TSMA in addressing the considered problem. In addition, the necessity of integrating production, transportation and equipment operation is verified through a set of comparison experiments. The study enriches integrated production scheduling theory, and provides methodological support for improving operational utility of complex equipment.

Abstract:Multi-energy systems (MESs) integrate multiple energy vectors and contribute to energy efficient utilization, which have received considerable attention in the energy research field. However, regarding a MES with multi communities, the coordination among the communities has not been fully considered in its planning and configuration. Therefore, this paper proposes a coordinated configuration strategy for MES planning based on capacity-energy-information sharing. First, analysing the capacity, energy and information sharing mechanisms among communities, an improved energy hub (EH) model and hierarchical planning framework for MES is built. Moreover, a bilevel configuration model that coordinates the planning and operation stages is developed to design a MES, which is guided by the information sharing of communities. While the upper level model makes the optimal quantity and capacity configuration plan of communities with consideration of capacity sharing, the lower level model optimizes the best operation economy considering energy interactions in MES scheduling. Finally, a case study is carried out and simulation results show that, compared with the planning approaches in the reference cases, the proposed strategy contributes to a decrease in the MES planning costs and exhibits better performances in jointly considering the planning economy, robustness, carbon emissions and user benefits.

Abstract:Though highly flexible Agent-based MES (AMES) can be constructed using to agent autonomy and loosely-coupled coordination characteristics, MES whose flexibility purely depends on the spontaneous and autonomous behavior of agent will fall short in holistic controllability.An ARC-model-driven (Agent Model,Role Mode,Character Model) AMES architecture is presented.And the corresponding way of adjusting AMES structure and behavior rapidly by model alternation is proposed so that holistic controllability can be maintained in managing AMES.

Abstract:The electric power, gas, and heat systems work on different but complementary time and space scales. Multiple energy systems (MES) yields an increase on the efficiency and flexibility of energy supply. The coupling between different forms of energy bring difficulties in the planning of the overall energy system. This paper proposes a novel optimal planning method for a community level MES that jointly determines the optimal generation, conversion and delivery of electricity, heat, cooling, and other services. First, configuration planning of a community level MES is introduced and defined using the energy hub (EH) concept. Then, the planning problem is presented with the objective of minimizing the sum of the investment and operating costs, with variables that represent the selection of energy converters or storage and their relationships. The model is then formulated asa mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem based on graph theory. The proposed model does not requires any pre-assumptions on the configurations of the EH so that it can plan the MES starting from scratch. Finally, an illustrative example is provided to describe the functioning of our proposed method. A numerical case study for the planning of a subsidiary administrative center in Beijing, China is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract:Multi-energy systems (MESs) contribute to increasing energy utilization efficiency and renewable energy accommodation by coupling multiple energy sectors. The preferable characteristic of MESs raises the need for optimizing the configuration of MESs across multiple energy sectors at the planning stage. Based on the energy hub (EH) model, this research presents a two-stage mixed-integer linear programming approach for district level MES planning considering distributed renewable energy integration. The approach models an MES as a directed acyclic graph with multiple layers. The proposed EH configuration planning procedure includes two stages: 1) optimizing what equipment (e.g., energy converters, distributed renewable energy sources and storages) should be invested in for each layer and 2) optimizing the connection relationships between the invested equipment in each two adjacent layers. The proposed approach is able to optimize both the equipment selection and the MES configuration. It can be applied to both expansion planning and initial planning of MESs from scratch. An illustrative example of planning a typical MES is given. A sensitivity analysis is performed to show the impacts of load profiles, energy prices and equipment parameters on the optimal MES configuration. A case study based on the MES in Beijing's new subsidiary administrative center is conducted using the proposed approach.

Abstract:Traditional manufacturing enterprises cannot adjust their production line structure in the short term. They face significant challenges in adapting to the rapidly changing market environment and meeting various variable batch production requirements. Building a suitable and convenient multi-layer planning and scheduling model is an important goal to solve the efficient operation of manufacturing enterprises. This paper proposes a planning and scheduling design that meets the needs of enterprise and the production workshop using the APERT-VC model through a top-down design methodology. APERT is an enterprise-level plan that uses attention mechanisms to collect job plan time and decomposes project plans into workshop plans through PERT technology. virtual command is workshop level plan management, which converts workshop plans into time series vectors and achieves rapid and comprehensive guidance of workshop resource planning for enterprises through multiple classification and decision-making. Through experiments, the algorithm achieved production scheduling accuracy improvement of over 30% compared to previous algorithms and a decision accuracy rate of over 90%. The first half of the new model solves the problem of collecting work time for multi variety and variable batch products, and improves the accuracy of algorithm input. The second half of the new algorithm innovatively combines image recognition technology with dispatcher behavior, achieving efficient simulation results.

Abstract:With the development of integration technology, the integrated automation systems for process industry adopt three-layer architecture of ERP/MES/PCS. According to the characteristics of process industry, the structure characteristics of the existed Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) for process industry are analyzed. The MES's function modules are presented and the corresponding agent modules are built, then an agent-based distributed MES structure for process industry is proposed. Such structure not only makes for managing and controlling the distributed MES for process industry, but also has flexibility and expansibility. Moreover, researches are made on the circulating mechanism of each agent and the communication among multi-agents, so as to realize the appropriate schedule of MES for process industry.
