Abstract:Prussian blue and its analogues have attracted tremendous interests as cathode materials for sodium ion batteries because of their low cost and high capacity. However, their commercial applications are hindered by low capacity utilization and insufficient cycle life. Here, we report on a MnCoNi-co-doped Prussian blue analogue with high purity and crystallinity by a citrate-assisted controlled crystallization process. Moreover, a novel strategy of in situ capturing for residual coordinated water during sodiation/desodiation process is proposed to achieve a high cyclability by using the aluminium chloride Lewis acid as electrolyte additive. The reversible cubic-rhombohedral phase transition is revealed by in situ X-ray diffraction, ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and transient electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The MnCoNi-co-doped composite delivers a capacity of 111 mAh g(-1) even at 1C and retains a capacity retention of 78.7% after 1500 cycles for sodium ion batteries. This work provides important insights on eliminating the parasitical coordinated water in lattice and modulating the crystallinity to develop high-performance Prussian blue and its analogues.

Abstract:Prussian blue and its analogues consisting of different transition-metal ions (Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu, Co and Zn) have been synthesized at room temperature. Insertion of Na into KFe2(CN)(6) in a carbonate electrolyte exhibited a reversible capacity near 100 mA h g(-1) with no capacity fade in 30 cycles. The data indicate that a Na-ion battery with a Prussian blue framework as a cathode will be feasible.

Abstract:Abstract Iron-based Prussian blue analogs are promising low-cost and easily prepared cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Their materials quality and electrochemical performance are heavily reliant on the precipitation process. Here we report a controllable precipitation method to synthesize high-performance Prussian blue for sodium-ion storage. Characterization of the nucleation and evolution processes of the highly crystalline Prussian blue microcubes reveals a rhombohedral structure that exhibits high initial Coulombic efficiency, excellent rate performance, and cycling properties. The phase transitions in the as-obtained material are investigated by synchrotron in situ powder X-ray diffraction, which shows highly reversible structural transformations between rhombohedral, cubic, and tetragonal structures upon sodium-ion (de)intercalations. Moreover, the Prussian blue material from a large-scale synthesis process shows stable cycling performance in a pouch full cell over 1000 times. We believe that this work could pave the way for the real application of Prussian blue materials in sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Prussian blue and its analogues with three-dimensional frame structures have been shown to be of great importance in the research and development of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, we develop a simple and convenient self-template method to prepare a hollow-structured Prussian blue analogue (CoFe-PBA). This structure is conducive to buffer the volume changes during ion extraction and insertion processes and shorten the ion diffusion path. When further building a thin polydopamine (PDA) coating, the synthesized CoFe-PBA@PDA exhibits a high discharge capacity of 123.1 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 with a capacity retention of 71.5% after 500 cycles. Moreover, the capacity retention of CoFe-PBA@PDA after 100 cycles is 14.3% higher than that of the two comparison samples. In addition, the reversible structure of CoFe-PBA@PDA without forming a new phase was verified by in situ X-ray diffraction. This work may provide another design idea or strategy for improving the stability of the PBA cathodes used in SIBs.

Abstract:Obvious volume change and the dissolution of polysulfide as well as sluggish kinetics are serious issues for the development of high performance metal sulfide anodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), which usually result in fast capacity fading during continuous sodiation and desodiation processes. In this work, by utilizing a Prussian blue analogue as functional precursors, small Fe-doped CoS2 nanoparticles spatially confined in N-doped carbon spheres with rich porosity were synthesized through facile successive precipitation, carbonization, and sulfurization processes, leading to the formation of bayberry-like Fe-doped CoS2/N-doped carbon spheres (Fe-CoS2/NC). By introducing a suitable amount of FeCl3 in the starting materials, the optimal Fe-CoS2/NC hybrid spheres with the designed composition and pore structure exhibited superior cycling stability (621 mA h g−1 after 400 cycles at 1 A g−1) and improved the rate capability (493 mA h g−1 at 5 A g−1). This work provides a new avenue for the rational design and synthesis of high performance metal sulfide-based anode materials toward SIBs.

Abstract:Prussian blue attracts the attention of many researchers as a promising candidate for use in sodium-ion battery cathodes due to its open frameworks and high working potential. However, the interstitial water in its crystal structure and its poor electronic conductivity limits its performance in practical sodium-ion batteries. Here, acid-assisted ball milling synthesis was employed as a versatile method for the production of surface-modified Prussian blue. With (CH3COO)2Fe being used as the raw material, the Prussian blue produced using ball milling synthesis was modified by the carboxyl functional group on its surface, which resulted in lower interstitial water content and enhanced electrochemical cycling performance. In addition, ball milling synthesis provided the as-prepared Prussian blue with a large surface area, improving its electrochemical rate performance. When used as the cathode of sodium-ion batteries, as-prepared Prussian blue delivered a specific capacity of 145.3 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C and 113.7 mAh g−1 at 1 C, maintaining 54.5% of the initial capacity after 1000 cycles at 1 C (1 C = 170 mA g−1). Furthermore, a solid-state sodium-ion battery was mounted, with as-prepared Prussian blue being employed as the cathode and Na metal as the anode, which delivered a high specific capacity of 128.7 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C. The present study put forward an effective solution to overcome the limitations of Prussian blue for its commercial application.

Abstract:Sodium ion batteries are attracting great attention due to the naturally alternative energy storage for large-scale applications. The reliable and high performance cathode materials are urgently needed for their practical applications. Here, we report sodium iron–nickel hexacyanoferrate (FeNiHCF) with Prussian blue structure by substitution of a portion of iron ions with nickel ions, and characterize it as cathode material of sodium ion battery for the first time. The low-spin Fe2+/Fe3+ couple in FeNiHCF is sufficiently activated for sodium storage, which leads to higher capacity contribution at larger potential and better stability on redox energy comparing with the single metal hexacyanoferrate of FeHCF or NiHCF. The FeNiHCF cathode presents synergistic advantages of high capacity, remarkable cycling stability, superior rate capability and good Coulombic efficiency. Significant improvement on electrochemical performance have been achieved with a discharge capacity of 106 mAh g−1, a Coulombic efficiency of ∼97% and excellent capacity retention of 96% over 100 cycles. Impressively, the FeNiHCF cathode present a good and stable cycling at high current densities, e.g. a capacity of 71 mAh g−1 and 100% capacity retention at a current density as high as 500 mA g−1. The intercalation chemistry manner for improving the sodium storage of material may shed light on improving the Na-storage performance of Prussian blue analogues.

Abstract:Metal sulfides display considerable theoretical capacities as anode materials in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), but their application is limited by their large volume expansion, sluggish charge-transfer kinetics, and poor cycling performances. In this study, unlike the traditional coprecipitation method to prepare the Prussian blue analogue (PBA), PBA with a tremella-like microflower structure is first synthesized by the hydrothermal method under the synergistic effect of trisodium citrate dihydrate (TSC, Na(3)C(6)H(5)O(7)middot2H(2)O) and K-3[Co(CN)(6)], and two kinds of cobalt sulfide nanoparticles embedded in N/S-codoped carbon frameworks (namely, Co3S4@C-N/S and Co9S8@C-N/S) are successfully synthesized by a subsequent solid sulfidation process. Herein, N/S-codoped carbon frameworks improve the electronic conductivity and provide more active sites for sodium storage. As the anode material in SIBs, the Co3S4@C-N/S 1.8-based anode exhibits an excellent initial charge/discharge specific capacity of 685.3/745.2 mAh g(-1) with a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 91.97% at 0.1 A g(-1) and a superior cycling performance (599.1 mAh g(-1) in the 600th cycle at 1 A g(-1) with a capacity retention of 89.4%). However, the Co9S8@C-N/S 1.8-based anode also delivers considerable initial Coulombic efficiency (86.1% at 0.1 A g(-1)) with high cycling stability (391.9 mAh g(-1) even in the 1200th cycle at 2 A g(-1) with a capacity retention of 78.1%). This study provides a material synthesis route for high-performance anode materials used in SIBs and other alkali metal-ion batteries.

Abstract:3D hierarchical hollow nanocubes constructed by 1D FeSe2@C core-shell nanorods were successfully prepared by a thermally-induced selenization process of their Prussian blue microcubes precursor. Such novel nanorods-based FeSe2@C hollow structures exhibit high conductivity and special structural property which provide good charge transport kinetics by facilitating the charge transfer into the inner of FeSe2 nanorods. When used as anode materials for sodium ion batteries, the hierarchically hollow nanocubes showed excellent rate performance and ultra-stable long-term cycling stability at a high current density of 10Ag−1, suggesting a good sodium-ion storage material. This simple solid-phase process demonstrated in this work can be further used for the preparation of other metal selenide with unique and fascinating structure for the potential applications in the energy storage field.

Abstract:Prussian blue crystal of sodium hexacyanoferrate is widely applied as the cathode for sodium ion battery (SIB) due to the features of high specific capacity and easy synthesis. While, the existed coordinated water and vacancy defects will cause the skeleton collapsed and lattice disordered during the cycling process, which lower the coulombic efficiency and shorten the cycle consistency. Furthermore, the inferior electron transport of Fe-HCF further affects the charge-discharge performance. Herein, we designed a high-quality FeMnCu co-doped Prussian blue (PB) crystal and controlled its crystallization process with assistance of citrate. Moreover, a core-shell structure of conductive polyaniline (PANI) coated Prussian blue analogue (FeMnCu@PANI) was constructed. The as-developed FeMnCu@PANI as the cathode for SIB delivers a capacity of 107 mAh g -1 at the current density of 1C and 82 mAh g -1 at 10C. The capacity retention rate reaches ∼90 % at 10C for 500 cycles. This FeMnCu@PANI crystal is nontoxic, high yield, low cost, and suitable for large-scale producing, which has great potential as cathode for SIB with high-capacity retention rate and long service life.

Abstract:Fe-based Prussian blue (Fe-PB) analogues have emerged as promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries, owing to their cost-effectiveness, high theoretical capacity, and environmental friendliness. However, their practical application is hindered by [Fe(CN)6] defects, negatively impacting capacity and cycle stability. This work reports a hollow layered Fe-PB composite material using 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTA) as a chelating and etching agent by the hydrothermal method. Compared to benzoic acid, our approach significantly reduces defects and enhances the yield of Fe-PB. Notably, the hollow layered structure shortens the diffusion path of sodium ions, enhances the activity of low-spin Fe in the Fe-PB lattice, and mitigates volume changes during Na-ion insertion/extraction into/from Fe-PB. As a sodium-ion battery cathode, this hollow layered Fe-PB exhibits an impressive initial capacity of 95.9 mAh g-1 at a high current density of 1 A g-1. Even after 500 cycles, it still maintains a considerable discharge capacity of 73.1 mAh g-1, showing a significantly lower capacity decay rate (0.048%) compared to the control sample (0.089%). Moreover, the full cell with BTA-PB-1.6 as the cathode and HC as the anode provides a considerable energy density of 312.2 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 291.0 W kg-1. This research not only enhances the Na storage performance of Fe-PB but also increases the yield of products obtained by hydrothermal methods, providing some technical reference for the production of PB materials using the low-yield hydrothermal method.

Abstract:In this paper, Prussian blue (PB) prepared by simple liquid phase synthesis method derives CoFe2O4 microcubes, which show remarkable rate performance and cycle stability when used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The cubic frame inherited from PB template and the synergistic effect of bimetallic elements gave the CoFe2O4 microcubes excellent electrochemical performance. At a current density of 100 mA g-1, the discharge capacity stabilized at 932 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles. Even at 500 mA g-1, after 350 cycles, the discharge specific capacity is still 602 mAh g-1. This work provides ideas for the development of LIBs anodes.

Abstract:Recently, Prussian blue and its analogues (PBAs) have attracted tremendous attention as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries because of their good cycling performance, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, they still suffer from kinetic problems associated with the solid-state diffusion of sodium ions during charge and discharge processes, which leads to low specific capacity and poor rate performances. In this work, novel sodium iron hexacyanoferrate nanospheres with a hierarchical hollow architecture have been fabricated as cathode material for sodium-ion batteries by a facile template method. Due to the unique hollow sphere morphology, sodium iron hexacyanoferrate nanospheres can provide large numbers of active sites and high diffusion dynamics for sodium ions, thus delivering a high specific capacity (142 mAh/g), a superior rate capability, and an excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, the sodium insertion/extraction mechanism has been studied by in situ X-ray diffraction, which provides further insight into the crystal structure change of the sodium iron hexacyanoferrate nanosphere cathode material during charge and discharge processes.
