Abstract:A two-step thermal polarization process was developed to create N-doped bamboo-like carbon nanotubes with Co loading. Co-doped graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets were prepared through the thermal polymerization of melamine. N-doped bamboo-like carbon nanotubes confirmed by Raman spectra were fabricated via further thermal polymerization at 750 degrees C using g-C3N4 nanosheets. Co nanoparticles were loaded during the thermal polymerization. Electrochemical tests indicate that Co-loaded samples revealed superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. The Pt clusters were deposited on the Co-loaded nanotube. When the loading amount of Pt clusters is 0.21% wt, the HER performance of Co-loaded nanotubes was better than that of commercial Pt/C (20% wt of Pt loading) electrode. In contrast, those Ni loaded nanotubes exhibited excellent selectivity in the catalytic direction of furfural hydrogenation, in which 99.3% of furfural was converted to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol at 120 degrees C. Tailoring the d-band center of N-doped carbon nanotube arrays with Co4N nanoparticles and single-atom Co for a superior hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:Abstract A 3D self-supported integrated electrode, consisting of heteroatomic nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube arrays on carbon cloth with confined ultrafine Co 4 N nanoparticles and a distribution of anchored single-atom Co, is fabricated via a cobalt-catalyzed growth strategy using dicyandiamide as the nitrogen and carbon source and a layered cobalt hydroxide-nitrate salt as the precursor. The abundance of exposed active sites, namely, the Co 4 N nanoparticles, single-atom Co, and heteroatomic N-doped carbon nanotubes, and multiple synergistic effects among these components provide suitable tailoring of the d -band center for facilitating vectorial electron transfer and efficient electrocatalysis. Benefiting from the merits of its structural features and electronic configuration, the prepared electrode exhibits robust performance toward the hydrogen evolution reaction with overpotentials of only 78 and 86 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in acidic and basic electrolytes, respectively. Density functional theory calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy valence band measurements reveal that the effective tailoring of the d -band center by Co 4 N nanoparticles plays a crucial role in optimizing the hydrogen adsorption free energy to a more thermoneutral value for efficient electrocatalysis.

Abstract:An original catalytic method has been proposed to synthesize carbon nanotubes (CNTs)–ZrB2–ZrO2 heterostructures using ZrB2 polymeric precursor. The pyrolysized gases from the ZrB2 polymeric precursor are identified to be the carbon sources for CNTs growth. A parametric study is conducted to control the CNTs growth by optimizing parameters such as synthesis temperature and catalyst content. Observations show that the in situ grown CNTs are homogeneously dispersed in the powders, and the structure and the amount of CNTs are significantly dependent on the synthesis parameters. There are two kinds of grown CNTs existed in the produced hybrid heterostructures: (i) the kinking structured CNTs that are disordered and incomplete graphitization; (ii) the improved and graphitized CNTs. The ZrB2 polymeric precursor during thermal pyrolysis provides capable of supplying substantial carbon source for CNTs nucleation and growth by homogeneous vapor–liquid–solid reactions.
In Situ-Generated Co0-Co3O4/N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes Hybrids As Efficient and Chemoselective Catalysts for Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes

Abstract:The earth-abundant nanohybrids Co-0/Co3O4@N-doped carbon nanotubes were fabricated via an efficient thermal condensation of D-glucosamine hydrochloride, melamine, and Co-(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O. The hybrids furnish excellent catalytic activity and perfect chemoselectivity (>99%) for a wide range of substituted nitroarenes (21 examples) under relatively mild conditions. The high catalytic performance and durability is attributed to the synergistic effects between each component, the unique structure of graphene layers-coated Co-0, and the electronic activation of doped nitrogen. Density functional calculations indicate that the inner Co-0 core and N species on the carbon shell can significantly decrease the dissociation energies of H-2, giving evidence of the ability of carbon shell in the hybrids to enable H-2 activation. These results open up an avenue to design more powerful low-cost catalysts for industrial applications.

Abstract:The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into fuels and valuable chemicals using solar energy is a promising method for reducing CO2 emissions and solving energy supply issues. However, the development of inexpensive, efficient and metal-free materials for photocatalytic CO2 reduction is challenging. Herein, we report a facile supramolecular self-assembly strategy for the preparation of porous nitrogen-rich graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanotubes with Lewis basicity and a large surface area, which are beneficial for the adsorption of CO2 and, consequently, the enhancement of the photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity. The metal-free porous nitrogen-rich g-C3N4 nanotubes catalyst exhibits a superior visible-light-induced CO2-to-CO conversion rate of 103.6 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which is 17 and 15 times higher than those of bulk g-C3N4 (6.1 mu mol g(-1) h(-1)) and P25-TiO2 (7.1 mu mol g(-1) h(-1)), respectively, and exceeds the performance of most metal-free photocatalysts. This work provides new insights into the synthesis of functional groups-modified g-C3N4 with a unique structure for effective photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Copolymerization is an efficient method to modulate the intrinsic properties of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). Herein, carbon ring and stereo molecular scaffold co-doped g-C3N4 heterostrcutural nanosheets are constructed for simultaneously enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under ordinary pressure. The carbon ring changes the in-plane connection of g-C3N4 by the sp2-hybridized CN bonds, extending the delocalization of π electrons. The stereo molecular scaffold loses the interlayer stacking of bulk g-C3N4 for easier exfoliation. The synergistic effect of the above two aspects can greatly improve the photocatalytic performance of AGCN. After thermal exfoliation, the highest photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity of A0.2G0.3CN-E sample is 12.9 times higher than that of MCN. This work provides a strategy to design g-C3N4 photocatalysts with enhanced photocatalytic activity by using synergistic effect.

Abstract:The atomically thin nanosheets of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with mesopores have been successfully exfoliated with supercritical CO2 (scCO2). The thickness of the as-synthesized samples could be directly tailored by simply regulating the scCO2 pressure. The obtained bilayer mesoporous g-C3N4 nanosheets doped with monatomic Co through a microwave-assisted approach havve been employed as single-atom catalysts to enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. The as-prepared Co/P/CN-sc sample exhibited a boosted H2 production performance due to its unique structural advantages by exposing more active sites and facilitating the separation of charge carriers. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray absorption fine structure measurement, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, a possible mechanism has been proposed. The work shows a new perspective for designing an inexpensive photocatalyst with a unique structure through a facile and green approach for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Synergy of defect engineering and curvature effect for porous graphite carbon nitride nanotubes promoted photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Abstract Graphite carbon nitride (g‐C 3 N 4 ) nanotubes have received extensive attention due to its unique morphology and electronic migration. Herein, the defective porous g‐C 3 N 4 nanotube (DTCN) is prepared through a simple thermal reduction process. The construction of N vacancy and tubular structure can synergistically promote the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. As a result, DTCN demonstrates a higher photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (1440 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ), which is 5 times higher than that of the initial g‐C 3 N 4 nanotube (TCN). Importantly, combined with density functional theory calculations and experimental results, it is the first time to prove that the synergy of curvature effect and N vacancy of nanotubes can enhance the adsorption energy of hydrogen and decrease the work function, resulting in more superior photocatalytic performance than the layered structure. This work provides more in‐depth comprehension for the photocatalytic mechanism of nanotube materials, which has inspirational significance for the design of the g‐C 3 N 4 photocatalyst with high performance.

Abstract:Highlights Co/Mo co-doped mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performances with regard to H2 generation (8.6 times) and Rhodamine B degradation (10.1 times) compared with pristine g-C3N4. The density functional theory calculations and optical simulation illustrate that Co/Mo co-doping and the created mesoporous structure can enhance light absorption. The enhanced activity depends on the synergistic effect of Co and Mo co-doping.

Abstract:The carbon-based electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air battery not only needs bifunctional activities to oxygen reduction and evolution reactions, but also requires a high graphitization degree to maintain an excellent stability. Herein, a simple and scale-up strategy is developed to synthesize a highly active and stable electrocatalyst () through a solid-state thermal conversion process, derived from a single and easy-to-get precursor (cobaltic Prussian blue analogue). The Co particles trapped inside the tips are the growth sites of the carbon nanotubes and greatly improve the catalytic activity. This kind of special structure helps to achieve remarkable bifunctional activities comparable to the noble metal counterparts and superior durability. Interestingly, is proved to have no single-atom Co sites on the carbon nanotube. In combination with electrochemical tests, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, N-C is considered to be the best ORR active site while N-C is the best OER active site.

Abstract:Hierarchical N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCTs) with controllable aspect ratios were developed for CO 2 adsorption. In this work, NCTs were synthesized by coating different amounts of 3-aminophenol/formaldehyde resin (APF) on the outer layer of silica nanotubes, carbonizing in N 2 at 700 ∘ C and removing the silica and Ni template by hydrofluoric acid etching. The obtained NCTs were activated by K 2 CO 3 . After activation, micropores on the activated N-doped carbon nanotubes (ANCTs) were enriched, the micro-surface area and pore volume of ANCT-1.0 reached 1195m 2 g −1 and 0.45cm 3 g −1 , respectively, and the corresponding adsorption capacity increased by 50% (4.50mmolg −1 at 0 ∘ C and 1 bar). Moreover, ANCT-1.0 maintained a high stability throughout consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles. The advantages of hierarchical N-doped carbon nanotubes, including their meso–microporous structures, high geometric aspect ratio and good stability, make them valuable and promising materials to capture carbon dioxide.

Greenery-Inspired Nanoengineering of Bamboo-Like Hierarchical Porous Nanotubes with Spatially Organized Bifunctionalities for Synergistic Photothermal Catalytic CO2 Fixation

Abstract:The fixation of CO 2 and epoxides into cyclic carbonates is a promising strategy for the resourceful use of CO 2 . However, halogen-based homogeneous co-catalysts are usually required for synergistic catalysis in most heterogeneous catalytic systems, which complicates the process of product separation and purification. Furthermore, CO 2 cycloaddition usually requires heating to drive the reaction, making it a highly energy-consuming catalytic process. Herein, the hyper-cross-linked mesoporous poly (ionic liquid)s and nickel-based bamboo-like N-doped carbon nanotubes are spatially organized to construct a synergistic photothermal catalytic system for CO 2 cycloaddition (denoted as Ni-BNCNTs@HMPs-NH 2 ). The integrated bifunctional catalyst Ni-BNCNTs@HMPs-NH 2 exhibits superior activity and stability for the conversion of CO 2 to cyclic carbonates under mild and co-catalyst/solvent-free conditions. Specifically, when the light intensity is 0.4 W/cm 2 , the reaction temperature can reach 74.2 °C, the yield is 99%, and there is no significant activity loss after 10 cycles of catalysis. Various characterizations illustrate that atomically dispersed Ni-N-C sites and imidazolium-based poly (ionic liquid)s in the Ni-BNCNTs@HMPs-NH 2 can act as Lewis acid sites and nucleophiles for synergistic catalytic CO 2 cycloaddition, respectively. In addition, under light irradiation, bamboo-like carbon nanotubes and plasmonic Ni nanoparticles facilitate the photothermal conversion, and semiconductor Ni-N-C generates photogenerated electrons as well as accelerates the rate-limiting step of the CO 2 cycloaddition. This work provides insights into low-energy photothermal-driven catalytic CO 2 conversion.

Abstract:The ideal photocatalyst used for photocatalytic water splitting requires strong light absorption, fast charge separation/transfer ability and abundant active sites. Heteroatom doping offers a promising and rational approach to optimize the photocatalytic activity. However, achieving high photocatalytic performance remains challenging if just relying on single-element doping. Herein, Boron (B) and sulfur (S) dopants are simultaneously introduced into graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanotubes by supramolecular selfassembly strategy. The developed B and S co-doped g-C 3 N 4 nanotubes (B,S-TCN) exhibited an outstanding photocatalytic in the conversion of H 2 O into H 2 (9.321 mmol g -1 h -1 ), and the corresponding external quantum efficiency (EQE) reached 5.3% under the irradiation of λ = 420 nm. It is well evidenced by the closely combined experimental and (density functional theory) DFT calculations: (1) the introduction of B dopants can facilitate H 2 O adsorption and drive interatomic electron transfer, leading to efficient water splitting reaction. (2) S dopants can stretch the VB position to promote the oxidation ability of g-C 3 N 4 , which can accelerate the consumption of holes and thus inhibit the recombination with electrons. (3) the simultaneous introduction of B and S can engineer the electronic and energy level structural of g-C 3 N 4 for optimizing interior charge transfer. Finally, the purpose of maximizing photocatalytic performance is achieved.

Abstract:In this work, we present a supramolecular template-derived synthesis approach combined with a carbon electronic structure tailoring strategy to prepare N-doped carbon (NC) nanosheets with delicately tuned nitrogen dopant levels and types for selective CO2 electrocatalytic reduction. By this method, the NC nanosheets are able to electrochemically reduce CO2 to CO with an unprecedentedly superior Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92% at a moderate overpotential as low as -0.36 V and showed great long-term stability with a remnant FECO around 85% after 10 h of electrolysis. The improved performance of NC nanosheets is mainly attributed to the synergetic effect of the electronic interaction of pyridinic nitrogen with adjacent C atoms in the interfacial nanoregime and the concomitant pore structure, high conductivity, as well as surface wettability. The capability to modulate the catalytic site electron densities opens up further opportunities for the rational re-engineering of carbon-based catalysts with accelerated electrocatalytic activity toward renewable energy applications and beyond.
Theoretical Study on the Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction Mechanism of Single-Atom Co Complexed Carbon-Based (Co-Nχ@C) Catalysts Supported on Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction serves as an effective strategy to tackle energy crises and mitigate greenhouse gas effects. The development of efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts has been a research hotspot in the field. In this study, we designed four Co-doped single-atom catalysts (Co-Nχ@C) using carbon nanotubes as carriers, these catalysts included tri- and dicoordinated N-doped carbon nanoribbons, as well as tri- and dicoordinated N-doped graphene, respectively denoted as H3(H2)-Co/CNT and 3(2)-Co/CNT. The stable configurations of these Co-Nχ@C catalysts were optimized using the PBE+D3 method. Additionally, we explored the reaction mechanisms of these catalysts for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 into four C1 products, including CO, HCOOH, CH3OH and CH4, in detail. Upon comparing the limiting potentials (UL) across the Co-Nχ@C catalysts, the activity sequence for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 was H2-Co/CNT > 3-Co/CNT > H3-Co/CNT > 2-Co/CNT. Meanwhile, our investigation of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with four catalysts elucidated the influence of acidic conditions on the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction process. Specifically, controlling the acidity of the solution was crucial when using the H3-Co/CNT and H2-Co/CNT catalysts, while the 3-Co/CNT and 2-Co/CNT catalysts were almost unaffected by the solution's acidity. We hope that our research will provide a theoretical foundation for designing more effective CO2 reduction electrocatalysts.
Self-assembled g-C3N4 nanotubes/graphdiyne composite with enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:In this work, g-C3N4 nanotubes (CNtb) with sheet-like graphdiyne (GDY) composite are successfully prepared through a simple self-assembly method. The composite is proved to significantly improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and the conductivity of the material, which consequently leads to enhanced performance towards photocatalytic CO2 reduction. For the composite, the yields for CO and CH4 are increased by 18–20 times, compared with pure CNtb. This work provides a new idea for the preparation of efficient g-C3N4 photocatalysts in the future.

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 can be enhanced by improving photoinduced carrier separation and exposing sufficient reactive sites. In this study, we synthesized B-doped porous tubular g-C3N4 (BCNT) using a H3BO3-assisted supramolecular self-template method, wherein H3BO3 helped in B-doping, building a porous structure, and maintaining one-dimensional nanotubes. The tubular structure had an ultrathin tube wall and large aspect ratio, which are conducive to the directional transmission and separation of photogenerated carriers; moreover, the abundant pore structure of the tube wall could fully expose the reactive sites. The introduction of B and the cyano group modulated the bandgap of g-C3N4 and elevated the position of the conduction band, thus enhancing the photoreduction ability and effectively improving the hydrogen evolution performance. Consequently, the hydrogen evolution of BCNT-2 (220.8, 53.2 μmol·h-1) was 1.82 and 1.54 times that of ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets (CNN, 121.3, 34.6 μmol·h-1) under simulated sunlight and LED lamp irradiation, respectively. Thus, this work provides in-depth insights into the rational design of one-dimensional g-C3N4 nanotubes with high hydrogen evolution activity under visible irradiation.
