An Analysis of Xu Yuanchong’s English Translation of Chinese Classical Poems from the Perspective of Translation Norms

Abstract:Chinese classical poetry has been a great treasure not only in Chinese literature but in world literature. But out of the cultural differences, the translation of Chinese classical poetry is rather difficult for translators to gain the interest of the target reader. Xu Yuanchong is being regarded as the best in translating Chinese classical poetry. Based upon Gideon Toury’s norm theory, the thesis makes a comparatively overall study of Xu Yuanchong’s translation of Chinese classical poetry. The purpose is to make a thorough and objective analysis of translational norms based on a concrete translation case and to give some useful guidance for the Chinese translators.
