Abstract:In the present study, the effect of the welding current parameter on the microstructure, hardness, and mechanical properties of the dissimilar resistance spot welding of the advanced high-strength steel DP590 and the interstitial free steel DC06 was studied. Microstructural examinations were performed on the welded samples using optical microscopy and a scanning electron microscope equipped with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis. The shear and cross-tension behavior of the welded samples were also studied. The critical process parameters were electrode force (3.6 kN), squeeze time (20 cycles), weld time (15 cycles), hold time (20 cycles), and weld current (8, 10, and 12 kA). The Results showed that coarse martensite and recrystallized coarse grains were observed in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the DP590 steel. The martensite fraction in the nugget was higher than in the base metal. Moreover, the HAZ in the DC06 steel side exhibited various zones of ferrite with different morphologies. The EBSD characterization of the nugget's DP590/DC06 welds interface indicated that the Widmanstätten ferrite phase with the orientation of TD || was formed due to the rapid cooling rate in the nugget. Increasing the current up to 10 kA resulted in enhanced tensile shear strength, hardness, and absorbed energy in the nugget of DC06/DP590 steel welds. However, more increments in the welding current led to the deterioration of the mechanical properties, owing to the explosive phenomenon in the nugget. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the microstructural evolution and mechanical behavior of dissimilar resistance spot welds, facilitating the optimization of welding parameters for improved joint performance.
