Abstract:Owing to the superior abrasive resistance, processability and self-lubricating performances, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) has attracted numerous attention in the areas of automotive steering wheels, electronic industry and national defense, etc. However, the industrial applications of TPU are imped due to its highly intrinsic flammability and the release of a lot of smoke and hot during combustion. To address this hurdle, herein, a hybridized flame retardant (ATi 3 C 2 T x ) was synthesized by the hydrogen-bonding interaction between titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) and aluminum hypophosphite (AP). The results indicated that incorporated 9.5A0.5Ti 3 C 2 T x decreased the peak of heat release rate, total heat release, total smoke release and total CO yield of TPU by 69.2%, 50.8%, 63.7% and 20.5%, respectively. Besides, the TPU/9.5A0.5Ti 3 C 2 T x composite passed the UL-94 V-0 rating test and obtained the highest LOI (29.9%) among all the specimens. The improved fire resistance of TPU composites was ascribed to the multiple effects of the ATi 3 C 2 T x hybrid.

Functionalizing Ti3C2Tx for enhancing fire resistance and reducing toxic gases of flexible polyurethane foam composites with reinforced mechanical properties

Abstract:Flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF) is the most used polyurethane, but the highly flammable characteristic limits its widespread usage. In this work, ZIF-8@Ti3C2Txwas synthesized to reduce the heat and toxic gases of FPUF. Flame-retardant FPUF was characterized by cone calorimeter (Cone), thermogravimetric analysis/fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR), tensileand compression tests. Compared with pure FPUF, these results showed that the peak of heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), CO and HCN of FPUF6 decreased by 46%, 69%, 27% and 43.5%, respectively. Moreover, the tensile and compression strength of FPUF6 demonstrated a 52% and 130% increment, respectively. The superior dual metal catalytical charring-forming effect and physical barrier effect of ZIF-8@Ti3C2Tx were achieved. In summary, a simple and reliable strategy for preparing flame-retardant FPUF with reinforced mechanical and fire safety properties was provided.

The radiation degradation of polytetrafluoroethylene resulting in low-molecular and functionalized perfluorinated compounds

Abstract:The degradation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) by high energy radiation with a high dose and in presence of oxygen forms perfluorinated carboxylic acids, among other compounds. In an inert atmosphere (in nitrogen) mixtures of perfluorinated olefines and paraffins of different chain length ranges are obtained. This process represents a new alternative of the synthesis of special active components, such as fluorocarbon surfactants, fluorine containing textile finishing agents, special dielectrics and others. Irradiation of the resulting perfluorinated paraffins (in nitrogen) and of gaseous degradation products of PTFE leads to a significant increase in the yield of perfluorinated olefines. Reaction mechanisms are discussed. Recombinations of radicals obtained by irradiation form branched molecules. The reactions are diffusion controlled. Irradiation of high molecular PTFE leads to low branching. The degree of branching of molecules increases in correlation with a decrease of viscosity of the reaction medium. An apparatus conception pertaining to the process of a continuous degradation of PTFE to perfluoroolefines and perfluoroparaffins in the favourable chain length ranges from six to 14 carbon atoms, according to application, is described. An essential component of this conception is the use of a target which consists of a tempered thin layer which is moved into an inertly processed reactor for irradiation. The action of high energy radiation of relatively low dose in air in presence of reactive substances leads to a finely grained PTFE powder with functional groups, which can be mixed easily with liquids, solutions and polymers.

Abstract:With the growing awareness of energy consumption and environmental pollution, the development of γ-radiation-degradable technology derived from clean energy is of great concern. However, radiation-induced degradation for thermoset materials is limited because γ-radiation-induced radicals are prone to recombination rather than controlled cleavage. Herein, via introducing the radiation-sensitive groups, phenyl imine conjugated NN bonds, we synthesized a radiation-sensitive epoxy monomer from vanillin (a renewable source) and 4-hydroxybenzhydrazide. The thermoset was formed by crosslinking this bio-based epoxy monomer with our reported hardener bearing phenyl imine conjugated NN bonds. When treated by a stimulus of γ-ray radiation, the resulting epoxy thermoset with high contents of sensitive groups could be efficiently degraded at a dose of 10 kGy. Degradation of the thermosets are realized through the controlled cleavage of phenyl imine conjugated NN bonds. Benefiting from this stable conjugated structural design, the epoxy thermosets exhibit excellent mechanical performance and intrinsic flame resistance with a tensile strength over 70 MPa and a limited oxygen index (LOI) of 35.1 %, which are higher than those of traditional robust thermosets made from bisphenol A. This work not only renders a pioneering paradigm of bio-based γ-ray-degradable thermosets but also develops an effective approach to simplify the manufacturing process of fire-safe thermosets, which significantly enhance the versatility of polymer materials.

Abstract:In order to promote the application scene of polyurethane (PU) elastomers, the low degradability and poor fire safety are the key problems that need to be solved urgently. In this work, the polyurethane elastomers (PCL-HDI-THPO x ) with flame retardant and degradable groups were synthesized. In the Microscale combustion colorimeter (MCC) test, the Total Heat Release (THR) and peak of Heat Release Rate (pHRR) of were decreased by 24% and 26%, respectively. Due to the enhancement of the internal crosslinking network density of the elastomer by THPO, the tensile strength and toughness increased by 450% and 117%, respectively. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) results showed the glass transition temperature (T g ) was between 30 o C and 40 o C, showing good shape memory properties. Surprisingly, the novel elastomer completely degraded in ethanol at 60 o C. Its excellent comprehensive performance will be welcomed in the fields of wearable electronic devices and load-bearing materials.

Abstract:Accompanying with tremendous efforts devoted to prompting recycling and mitigating disposal problems pertinent to obsolete polymer materials, it is imperative to ameliorate thermoset polymer composites that are both mechanically robust and reprocessable. Herein, we devised and prepared a series of dynamic thermoset polyurea composites (HTPU-x) by embedding CB into pristine thermoset polyurea matrix and merely using commodity raw materials. Through incorporating the dynamically sterling nature of urea bonds, the devised HTPU-x can simultaneously maintain superhigh breaking strength and elongations at break even after multiple cycles under hot press, manifesting both extraordinary mechanical properties, extraordinary reprocessability and exceptional multiple recyclability. Especially, amalgamation of the conductivity of carbon black and the dynamic nature of urea bonds can not only furnish these HTPU-x with conventional elastic shape memory performance, but also equip them with plastic shape memory and permanent shape reconfiguration under heat and electricity. Furthermore, HTPU-x can be reshaped and reconfigured to various permanent shapes in several seconds at a safe voltage. With enabling traditionally thermoset polymer composites with more upgraded functions, this designed scheme of mechanically robust HTPU-x provides a facilitating approach to reprocess and recycle the wasted thermoset polymer composites.

Abstract:Amounts of heat and toxic fumes are released during the combustion of polymeric materials, which severely threats to the human health and causes the environmental pollution. Therefore, it is vital to find an effective way to address these problems. Herein, titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) and chitosan (CS) were firstly adopted to functionalize ammonium polyphosphate (APP) via the microencapsulation and layer-by-layer assembly. Afterwards, the as-synthesized core-shell-structured hybrid (@Ti3C2Tx) was used to enhance the interface compatibility, thermal stability and fire safety of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites. The results demonstrated that the @Ti3C2Tx hybrid presented a strong interface interaction with the TPU matrix. Besides, TPU/@Ti3C2Tx composites exhibited the improved thermal stability. The TPU composite containing [email protected]@0.5Ti3C2Tx achieved V-0 rating in the UL-94 testing. The cone calorimetry results illustrated that introduction of [email protected]@0.5Ti3C2Tx into TPU caused remarkable reduction in the total heat release (73.0%) and total smoke release (77.3%). Furthermore, the total carbon monoxide yield and total carbon dioxide yield of TPU/@0.5Ti3C2Tx were significantly decreased by 75.3% and 75.4%, respectively, compared to those of pure TPU. The synergistic charring effect between and Ti3C2Tx, the thermal oxidization action and "tortuous path" effect of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets combined with the trapping effect of resulted in the dramatically improved fire resistance of the polymeric material. This work offers an innovative strategy to fabricate the high-performance polymer composites with superior fire safety.

This approach should be adaptable to the industrial extrusion method for highly productive manufacturing of capacitor films.
Design of core-multi shell flame retardant towards fire safe thermoplastic polyurethane composites with low toxic fumes generation

Abstract:Superior flame retardancy and excellent smoke suppression are two significant issues in thermoplastics, especially for thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with extensive application in industrial fields. It is of great significance, but hardly achievable, to simultaneously impart these properties to TPU. Herein, we reported the titanium carbide and coupling agent functionalized the silicon-wrapped ammonium polyphosphate (NSiAPP@Ti3C2Tx) via hydrogen-bonding interaction and microencapsulation, which were then adopted to enhance the fire safety of TPU. The as-prepared TPU/9.0NSiAPP@1.0Ti3C2Tx composite showed the V-0 rating in the UL-94 testing and its LOI value was increased to 27.6%. Besides, the cone calorimetry results indicated that the peak of heat release rate, total smoke release, total carbon monoxide yield and total carbon dioxide yield of the TPU/9.0NSiAPP@1.0Ti3C2Tx were significantly decreased by 78.1%, 72.6%, 53.7% and 67.5%, respectively, as compared to those of pure TPU. The outstanding charring effect and excellent barrier function together with the prominent terminating action of the NSiAPP@Ti3C2Tx hybrid caused the remarkable enhancement of the fire resistance for TPU composites. This work offers a promising strategy for endowing TPU composite with high flame retardancy and superior smoke suppression.

Abstract:The broader application of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) as encapsulation materials is severely restricted by their serious tensile strength and appreciable fire hazard. Hence, 3D hydrangea-like Ti3C2Tx MXene@FeNi layered double hydroxides (M@LDH) are prepared through in situ growth, and incorporated into the TPU. Excitedly, compared to neat TPU, upon adding 3 wt% M@LDH, the obtained M@LDH-3 was capable of achieving a 38.3% and 67.0% decrease in the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total smoke release (TSR), respectively, exhibiting peerless flame-retardant effects under low addition. In addition, the elongation at break of TPU/M@LDH-3 increased to 637.28% and its tensile strength increased to 42.97 MPa, revealing excellent mechanical properties. The mechanisms for the fire safety and mechanical performance were both studied deeply, expecting this work to illuminate the approach of designing efficient nanomaterials and promote the development of advanced TPU in high-end fields.

Abstract:Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is highly flammable and UV aging, limiting its application in the field of new energy and electronic device. In this work, a novel macromolecular aromatic phosphonate Bis(4-(((diphenylphosphinyl)oxy)methyl)phenyl)phenylphosphonate (DMP) containing both P-C and P=O was successfully prepared by nucleophilic substitution reaction. The DMP was introduced into the TPU matrix to prepare multifunctional TPU composites. Condensed and gas phase analysis have shown that the flame retardant mechanism of DMP was mainly influenced by flame retardant inhibition and the barrier effect of char layer. Only 5 wt% DMP enabled TPU to obtain the UL-94 V-0 rating with the LOI of 27.6%. Compared with pure TPU, the HRR and THR of TPU/5 wt% DMP were decreased by 19.8% and 13.2%. Meanwhile, the matching of the melting point for DMP and the processing temperature for TPU increased its dispersion in TPU matrix. Due to the excellent compatibility between DMP and TPU, TPU/DMP composites almost retained their original transparency and ductility. In addition, TPU/DMP composites exhibited excellent UV resistance, obtaining 100% UV shielding at UV-B wavelengths and up to 97% UV isolation at UV-A wavelengths. The study introduced a novel approach for preparing multifunctional flame retardant additives, and opened up wide application prospects for high-performance flame retardant TPU composites in emerging fields such as rail transit and electronic packaging.

Abstract:Remedied during processing and service life, and then controlled ecologically, are ideal behaviors for polymers. Antioxidants and prooxidants always play their respective roles during the programming of their actions, and the oxygen-containing groups are non-controllable during oxidative stress. This work demonstrates an eco-friendly remedial strategy for polyester-based thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs). Upon the thermal-oxidative stressing, Fe(III) ions were released from the 2,2-bisferrocenylpropane doped in TPUs, polyester chains underwent β -scission, and iron-catalyzed oxidation directed new end groups to carboxylates. Ferroxane was progressively constructed by interaction between Fe x 3+ O y (2x > 3y) and external carboxylates. Consequently, the metallo-supramolecular networks were constructed to mitigate the mechanical degradation . Compared to virgin TPU, the sample containing only 1.0 wt% 2,2-bisferrocenylpropane, with 10-day thermal-oxidative stressing showed distinctly outperforming tensile strength (42.7 ± 1.9 MPa), breaking elongation (984 ± 61%), and Young's modulus (32.0 ± 1.6 MPa). The study would be interesting for preventing failure, lessening waste, and diminishing toxicity of the polymer, which is consistent with sustainable development.

Organocatalyzed Photo‐Controlled Synthesis of Ultrahigh‐Molecular‐Weight Fluorinated Alternating Copolymers

Abstract:Ultrahigh-molecular-weight (UHMW) polymers with tailored structures are highly desirable for the outstanding properties. In this work, we developed a novel photoorganocatalyzed controlled radical alternating copolymerizations of fluoroalkyl maleimide and diverse vinyl comonomers, enabling efficient preparation of fluorinated copolymers of predetermined UHMWs and well-defined structures at high conversions. Versatility of this method was demonstrated by expanding to controlled terpolymerization, which allows facial access toward fluorinated terpolymers of UHMWs and functional pendants. The obtained copolymers exhibited attractive physical properties and furnished thermoplastic, anticorrosive and (super)hydrophobic attributes as coatings on different substrates. Molecular simulations provided insights into the coating morphology, which unveiled a fluorous protective layer on the top surface with polar groups attached to the bottom substrate, resulting in good adhesion and hydrophobicity, simultaneously. This synthetic method and customized copolymers shed light on the design of high-performance coatings by macromolecular engineering.

Abstract:Fluoropolymers of well-defined structures exhibit significant potential in a broad range of high-tech applications. However, the controlled synthesis of fluoropolymers from easily available monomers remains difficult. In this work, we report the development of an organocatalyzed controlled radical copolymerization of (perfluoroalkyl)ethylenes (PFAEs) and unconjugated vinyl monomers (UCMs) under light irradiation, which has enabled on-demand access toward side-chain fluorinated polymers under metal-free conditions. This method furnishes a large variety of polymers with diverse fluoroalkyl and ester/amide as pendent groups, tunable molar masses, and low dispersities (ca. Đ = 1.1-1.3), and adjustable fractions of PFAE and UCM units. Obtained fluoropolymers exhibit good chain-end fidelity and activity, allowing chain-extension polymerizations to prepare block copolymers of complicated compositions. Furthermore, the PFAE copolymers exhibit outstanding light transmission and low refractive index.
An Operable Platform Towards Functionalization of Chemically Inert Boron Nitride Nanosheets for Flame Retardancy and Toxic Gas Suppression of Thermoplastic Polyurethane

Abstract:The inherent chemical inertness presents a huge challenge for the functionalization of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), thus limiting its potential in flame retardant and toxic gas suppression of thermoplasticity polyurethane (TPU). Here, with the assistance of Lewis acid-base interactions, an operable platform formed by SiO2 coating is constructed onto the surface of h-BN nanosheets, offering an opportunity for introducing phytic acid (PA). The resultant h-BN nanohybrids present an enhancement effect for flame retardancy of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), confirmed by obvious reductions in peak value of heat release rate (-23.5%) and total heat release (-22.1%). Meanwhile, the smoke product rate and total smoke release of TPU composite containing 2.0 wt% h-BN nanohybrids are decreased by 29.2% and 8.6%, respectively. Through CO2 detector and AtmosFIR, specially, it is found that the toxic gases (CO, CH4, C2H6, TOC) are turned into CO2. Through a series of analytic methods, it was found that the introduced PA suffered from a pre-gradation process to release P-containing compounds, reacting with TPU matrix to produce protective char. In addition, the presence of SiO2 was also contributed to improve the robustness of char residue. In view of high temperature condition, the catalysis effect of h-BN is responsible for the conversion of toxic gases. Therefore, the enhanced fire safety of TPU was attributed to the cooperation mechanism of h-BN, SiO2, and PA. Such a functionalization approach provides a novel route to overcome the chemical inertness of h-BN, thus promoting its application in fire safety fields of polymer materials.
Recyclable Tough Thermoset with Imide-Hexahydrotriazine Structure

Abstract:Developing sustainable thermosets is regarded as a major approach to cope with environmental pollution and resource waste, but it still remains a challenge to design recyclable thermosets with exceptional comprehensive performance. In this work, a kind of poly(imide-hexahydrotriazine) (PHT) thermosets with degradable and recyclable abilities is reported for the first time. To improve overall property, the rigid-and-flexible cross-linked networks of the thermoset is fabricated by polycondensation between synthetic amino-capped polyimide oligomer and paraformaldehyde (PFA). Such thermosets, especially BP-PHT, possess excellent mechanical properties and toughness with the maximum tensile strength of 129 MPa and breaking elongation ratio of 11.6%. Moreover, the prepared thermosets also present exceptional thermal stability (Tg ~ 211 °C), solvent resistance and ultraviolet (UV) stability. Most importantly, these thermosets could be completely degraded under mild acid solution within 6 h, which makes it available for efficient recycle of high-cost carbon fibers (CFs) and valuable starting materials (degraded products) from composites. In addition, the reprepared PHT thermosets using 80 wt.% or 90 wt.% degraded products still show high mechanical properties and the tensile strength of PHT90% remains up to ~ 80 MPa. Motivated by the requirements of sustainable development, this study proposes a brand-new conception for design and fabrication of excellent overall-performance thermosets materials with desired degradability and recyclability.

Abstract:High fire-safety is extremely required for polymer materials applied in many social environments, but the contradiction between fire-safety and processability for molecular design of intrinsic highly fire-safe polymers has remained a challenge, so perfect polymer candidates meeting the above requirements are greatly lacking. Traditional design based on scientific intuition and trial-and-error experimentation is time-consuming and rather inefficient; herein, we establish a simple material genome approach (MGA) allowing high-throughput screening of intrinsic fire-safe and processable polycarbonates (PCs). A bisphenol unit was chosen as the "gene" of PC chains, and the glass transition temperature and the total heat release were key intrinsic parameters indicative of processability and fire-safe performance, respectively. Two PCs with optimized chemical structures were successfully predicted and synthesized. More excitingly, the predicted PCs show excellent comprehensive performances, and the novel mechanism for outstanding fire-safety performance has been found. This work provides an efficient guide in the design and synthesis of processable highly fire-safe polymers.

Abstract:Thermoset materials containing about 70 wt% epoxy resin are widely used in critical aerospace and wind power structures, generating enormous amounts of waste (such as offcuts and damaged, worn and disposed parts) that affect both the environment and the sustainable development of human society. Owing to their irreversible crosslinked networks, thermoset materials pose major challenges for rapid degradation and high-efficiency recycling. Here we report the synthesis of thermoset hyperbranched polymers (HER-HTn) containing a reversible heterocyclic structure (hexahydro-s-triazine) that can be degraded under relatively mild conditions. The cured HER-HTn exhibit excellent mechanical and thermal properties, as well as rapid degradability in more environmentally friendly phosphoric acid solutions. Controlled degradation experiments show that the cured HER-HTn can be completely digested at relatively low temperatures (90 °C) in a short period (2 h) to recover 2-aminobenzyl alcohol at a high recycling efficiency (85.1%). The recovered 2-aminobenzyl alcohol can then be used to produce the initial hexahydro-s-triazine monomer, which demonstrates the reversibility of the hexahydro-s-triazine structure and recoverability of the thermoset hyperbranched polymers. This investigation provides a method for the synthesis of a degradable thermoset matrix and the cyclic use of high-value materials in the thermoset and its composites.

Abstract:High molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is transformed to free-flowing micropowder by treatment with electron beams. In case of irradiation in presence of air carboxylic acid fluoride groups are incorporated which rapidly hydrolyze to carboxylic groups in the surface-near regions due to atmospheric humidity. These polar groups reduce the hydrophobic and oleophobic properties so much that homogeneous compounding with other materials becomes possible. In addition to PTFE, copolymers of tetrafluoroethylene with hexafluoropropylene (FEP) and perfluoropropylvinylether (PFA) were modified. In case of identical irradiation conditions, the concentration of carboxylic groups is much higher in FEP and PFA than in PTFE, which is due to the lower crystallinity of the copolymers.Electron beam irradiation of PTFE was performed in vacuum at elevated temperature above the melting point. The changes in the chemical structure were studied. The concentration of CF3 branches was found to be much higher as compared to room temperature irradiation.In a practical test PTFE micropowders functionalized by electron irradiation were compounded with epoxy resins, with polyoximethylene and with polyamides. Such compounds are characterized by very good frictional and wearing behaviour in dry-running tests.
