Abstract:We present an overview of a research program for the excited nucleon states in Excited Baryon Analysis Center (EBAC) at Jefferson Lab. Current status of our analysis of the meson production reactions based on the unitary dynamical coupled-channels model is summarized, and the N* pole positions extracted from the constructed scattering amplitudes are presented. Our plans for future developments are also discussed.

Abstract:We present the dynamical origin of the P11 nucleon resonances resulting from a dynamical coupled-channels (DCC) analysis of meson production reactions off a nucleon target, which is conducted at Excited Baryon Analysis Center (EBAC) of Jefferson Lab. Two resonance poles are found in the energy region where the Roper resonance P11(1440) was identified. Furthermore, the two resonance poles and the next higher resonance pole corresponding to P11(1710) are found to originate from a single bare state.

Abstract:Studies of the structure of excited baryons are key factors to the N* program at Jefferson Lab (JLab). Within the first year of data taking with the Hall B CLAS12 detector following the 12 GeV upgrade, a dedicated experiment will aim to extract the N* electrocouplings at high photon virtualities Q 2 . This experiment will allow exploration of the structure of N* resonances at the highest photon virtualities ever achieved, with a kinematic reach up to Q 2 = 12 GeV 2 . This high-Q 2 reach will make it possible to probe the excited nucleon structures at distance scales ranging from where effective degrees of freedom, such as constituent quarks, are dominant through the transition to where nearly massless bare-quark degrees of freedom are relevant. In this document, we present a detailed description of the physics that can be addressed through N* structure studies in exclusive meson electroproduction. The discussion includes recent advances in reaction theory for extracting N* electrocouplings from meson electroproduction off protons, along with Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD)-based approaches to the theoretical interpretation of these fundamental quantities. This program will afford access to the dynamics of the nonperturbative strong interaction responsible for resonance formation, and will be crucial in understanding the nature of confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in baryons, and how excited nucleons emerge from QCD.

Abstract:We review recent calculations using the quark meson coupling model which should be of particular interest at Jefferson Lab. In particular, we discuss the change in the proton electric and magnetic form factors when it is bound in a specific shell model orbit. Modern quasi-elastic electron scattering experiments should be able to detect effects of the size predicted. We also examine the mean field potential felt by an $\omega$ in a finite nucleus, concluding that the $\omega$ should be bound by between 50 and 100 MeV.

Abstract:The Flux-Tube Breaking Model in ee$\in$MC is expanded to include the residual QCD potential between the Final-State mesons, within the non-relativistic limit. These residual QCD potentials have been predicted in the context of the Flux-Tube Breaking Models to generate meson-meson molecular states for the $f_{0}(500)$, $f_{0}(980)$, $a_{0}(980)$, through the colour hyper-fine spin-spin interaction. These residual potentials are also found to have an important impact on the $S_{1}$ decay of the $a_{1}$ and $K_{1}$ axial-vector mesons due to the colour hyper-fine spin-spin interaction. It is found that in the low mass regions, the $\rho(770)$ and $K^{*}(892)$ are sensitive to the linear-confining potential and colour-Coulomb potential suggesting that with the high statistics at the B-Factories, it may be possible to probe the linear-confining potential and colour-Coulomb potential through a model dependent description of the resonance shape or by exploiting multiple production process.

Abstract:Exclusive electroproduction reactions provide an access to the structure of excited baryons. To extract electroproduction multipoles encoding this information, the Jülich-Bonn-Washington (JBW) analysis framework is extended to the analysis of differential cross sections in $K\Lambda$ electroproduction. This update enlarges the scope of previous coupled-channel analyses of pions and eta mesons, with photoproduction reactions as boundary condition in all analyzed electroproduction reactions. Polarization observables are predicted and compared to recent CLAS data. The comparison shows the relevance of these data to pin down baryon properties.

Abstract:We develop a dynamical coupled-channels model of K^- p reactions, aiming at extracting the parameters associated with hyperon resonances and providing the elementary antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes that can be used for investigating various phenomena in the strangeness sector such as the production of hypernuclei from kaon-nucleus reactions. The model consists of (a) meson-baryon (MB) potentials v_{M'B',MB} derived from the phenomenological SU(3) Lagrangian, and (b) vertex interactions Gamma_{MB,Y*} for describing the decays of the bare excited hyperon states (Y*) into MB states. The model is defined in a channel space spanned by the two-body barK N, pi Sigma, pi Lambda, eta Lambda, and K Xi states and also the three-body pi pi Lambda and pi barK N states that have the resonant pi Sigma* and barK* N components, respectively. The resulting coupled-channels scattering equations satisfy the multichannel unitarity conditions and account for the dynamical effects arising from the off-shell rescattering processes. The model parameters are determined by fitting the available data of the unpolarized and polarized observables of the K^- p --> barK N, pi Sigma, pi Lambda, eta Lambda, K Xi reactions in the energy region from the threshold to invariant mass W=2.1 GeV. Two models with equally good chi^2 fits to the data have been constructed. The partial-wave amplitudes obtained from the constructed models are compared with the results from a recent partial-wave analysis by the Kent State University group. We discuss the differences between these three analysis results. Our results at energies near the threshold suggest that the higher partial waves should be treated on the same footing as the S wave if one wants to understand the nature of Lambda(1405)1/2^- using the data below the barK N threshold, as will be provided by the J-PARC E31 experiment.

Abstract:The composite nature of baryons manifests itself in the existence of a rich spectrum of excited states, in particular in the important mass region 1-2 GeV for the light-flavoured baryons. The properties of these resonances can be identified by systematic investigations using electromagnetic and strong probes, primarily with beams of electrons, photons, and pions. After decades of research, the fundamental degrees of freedom underlying the baryon excitation spectrum are still poorly understood. The search for hitherto undiscovered but predicted resonances continues at many laboratories around the world. Recent results from photo- and electroproduction experiments provide intriguing indications for new states and shed light on the structure of some of the known nucleon excitations. The continuing study of available data sets with consideration of new observables and improved analysis tools have also called into question some of the earlier findings in baryon spectroscopy. Other breakthrough measurements have been performed in the heavy-baryon sector, which has seen a fruitful period in recent years, in particular at the B factories and the Tevatron. First results from the LHC indicate rapid progress in the field of bottom baryons. In this review, we discuss the recent experimental progress and give an overview of theoretical approaches.

Exclusive photo- and electroproduction of mesons at large momentum transfer

Abstract:We analyze the reactions gamma+p => M+B, with M B being either K+ Lambda, K+ Sigma0, or pi+ n, within perturbative QCD, allowing for diquarks as quasi-elementary constituents of baryons. The diquark-model parameters and the quark-diquark distribution amplitudes of the baryons are taken from previous investigations of electromagnetic baryon form factors and Compton- scattering off protons. Reasonable agreement with the few existing data at large momentum transfer is achieved if the asymptotic form (c x (1-x)) is chosen for the meson distribution amplitudes.

Abstract:Utilizing the large quantity of hyperons and antihyperons produced by the decay of 10 billion $J/\psi$ and 2.7 billion $\psi(3686)$ collected at BESIII, the cross sections of several specific elastic or inelastic (anti-)hyperon-nucleus/nucleon rections have been measured via the scattering between the (anti-)hyperons and the nucleus in the dense objects of BESIII detector. The novel method developed in these works extends the research field and opens a new era for the experiments at $e^+ e^-$ colliders. The results of such measurements will definitely benefit a lot the precise probe of the (anti-)hyperon-nucleus/nucleon interactions and provide constraints for the studies of the potential of strong interaction, the origin of color confinement, the unified model for baryon-baryon interactions, and the internal structure of neutron stars. The desirable prospects of corresponding studies in the future Super Tau-Charm Factory (STCF) are also discussed in this report.

Dynamical Coupled-Channel Model of $πN$ Scattering in the W $\leq$ 2 GeV Nucleon Resonance Region

Abstract:As a first step to analyze the electromagnetic meson production reactions in the nucleon resonance region, the parameters of the hadronic interactions of a dynamical coupled-channel model, developed in {\it Physics Reports 439, 193 (2007)}, are determined by fitting the $\pi N$ scattering data. The channels included in the calculations are $\pi N$, $\eta N$ and $\pi\pi N$ which has $\pi\Delta$, $\rho N$, and $\sigma N$ resonant components. The non-resonant meson-baryon interactions of the model are derived from a set of Lagrangians by using a unitary transformation method. One or two bare excited nucleon states in each of $S$, $P$, $D$, and $F$ partial waves are included to generate the resonant amplitudes in the fits. The parameters of the model are first determined by fitting as much as possible the empirical $\pi N$ elastic scattering amplitudes of SAID up to 2 GeV. We then refine and confirm the resulting parameters by directly comparing the predicted differential cross section and target polarization asymmetry with the original data of the elastic $\pi^{\pm} p \to \pi^{\pm} p$ and charge-exchange $\pi^- p \to \pi^0 n$ processes. The predicted total cross sections of $\pi N$ reactions and $\pi N\to \eta N$ reactions are also in good agreement with the data. Applications of the constructed model in analyzing the electromagnetic meson production data as well as the future developments are discussed.

Abstract:Understanding the strong interaction dynamics that govern the emergence of hadron mass (EHM) represents a challenging open problem in the Standard Model. In this paper we describe new opportunities for gaining insight into EHM from results on nucleon resonance (N*) electroexcitation amplitudes (i.e., γvpN* electrocouplings) in the mass range up to 1.8 GeV for virtual photon four-momentum squared (i.e., photon virtualities Q2) up to 7.5 GeV2 available from exclusive meson electroproduction data acquired during the 6-GeV era of experiments at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab). These results, combined with achievements in the use of continuum Schwinger function methods (CSMs), offer new opportunities for charting the momentum dependence of the dressed quark mass from results on the Q2-evolution of the γvpN* electrocouplings. This mass function is one of the three pillars of EHM and its behavior expresses influences of the other two, viz. the running gluon mass and momentum-dependent effective charge. A successful description of the Δ(1232)3/2+ and N(1440)1/2+ electrocouplings has been achieved using CSMs with, in both cases, common momentum-dependent mass functions for the dressed quarks, for the gluons, and the same momentum-dependent strong coupling. The properties of these functions have been inferred from nonperturbative studies of QCD and confirmed, e.g., in the description of nucleon and pion elastic electromagnetic form factors. Parameter-free CSM predictions for the electrocouplings of the Δ(1600)3/2+ became available in 2019. The experimental results obtained in the first half of 2022 have confirmed the CSM predictions. We also discuss prospects for these studies during the 12-GeV era at JLab using the CLAS12 detector, with experiments that are currently in progress, and canvass the physics motivation for continued studies in this area with a possible increase of the JLab electron beam energy up to 22 GeV. Such an upgrade would finally enable mapping of the dressed quark mass over the full range of distances (i.e., quark momenta) where the dominant part of hadron mass and N* structure emerge in the transition from the strongly coupled to perturbative QCD regimes.

Search for baryon junctions in e+A collisions at the Electron Ion Collider

Abstract:Constituent quarks in a nucleon are the essential elements in the standard ``quark model" associated with the electric charge, spin, mass, and baryon number of a nucleon. Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) describes nucleon as a composite object containing current quarks (valence quarks and sea (anti-)quarks) and gluons. These subatomic elements and their interactions are known to contribute in complex ways to the overall nucleon spin and mass. In the early development of QCD theory in the 1970s, an alternative hypothesis postulated that the baryon number might manifest itself through a non-perturbative configuration of gluon fields forming a Y-shaped topology known as the gluon junction. In this work, we propose to test such hypothesis by measuring (i) the Regge intercept of the net-baryon distributions for $e$+($p$)Au collisions, (ii) baryon and charge transport in the isobaric ratio between $e$+Ru and $e$+Zr collisions, and (iii) target flavor dependence of proton and antiproton yields at large rapidity, transported from the hydrogen and deuterium targets in $e+p$(d) collisions. Our study indicates that these measurements at the EIC can help determine what carries the baryon number.

Abstract:This talk reviews recent developments in the use of large $N_c$ QCD in the description of baryonic resonances. The emphasis is on the model-independent nature of the approach. Key issues discussed include the spin-flavor symmetry which emerges at large $N_c$ and the direct use of scattering observables. The connection to quark model approaches is stressed.

Abstract:Pseudoscalar mesons can be produced and studied in high-energy electron-nucleus scattering. We review and extend our previous theoretical analysis of meson production in the nuclear Coulomb field. The P→γγ decay rates are most directly determined for mesons produced in the double-Coulomb region where both photons are nearly real, and provided the hadronic-background contributions remain small. The larger the mass of the meson the higher the electron energy needed to assure such favorable conditions.

The reaction $πN \to ωN$ in a dynamical coupled-channel approach

Abstract:This talk is on a refined investigation on light flavor meson-baryon scatterings, using a dynamical coupled-channel approach, i.e. the Jülich-Bonn model. The previous channel space of $\pi N$, $\pi \Delta$, $\sigma N$, $\rho N$, $\eta N$, $K \Lambda$ and $K \Sigma$ is extended by adding the $\omega N$ final state. The spectra of $N^*$ and $\Delta$ resonances are extracted, based on the result of a global fit to a worldwide collection of data, in the energy region from the $\pi N$ threshold to center-of-mass energy $z=2.3$ GeV (approximately $300$ parameters against $9000$ data points). A negative value of the $\omega N$ elastic spin-averaged scattering length has been extracted.
