Abstract:Zataria multiflora Boiss. is a medicinal and aromatic plant from the Lamiaceae family. It is extensively used in Iranian traditional medicine, mostly as a replacement for Thyme species. This study was focused on the analysis of chemical composition and the distribution and types of trichomes of Z. multiflora grown under different conditions. Equilibrium headspace analysis in combination with GC-FID-MS was used to identify volatile compounds released by aerial parts of Z. multiflora in development stages of 50 and 100% flowering under normal and drought-stress conditions.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on two aspects: 1. **Analysis of volatile components**: To study the changes in the volatile components of the **Zataria multiflora** plant at different development stages (50% and 100% of the flowering period) and under normal and drought - stress conditions. Through equilibrium headspace analysis combined with gas chromatography - flame ionization detector/mass spectrometer (GC - FID - MS) technology, these volatile components are identified and quantified. 2. **Types, distribution and structure of trichomes**: To study the changes in the types, distribution and structure of glandular and non - glandular hairs on the surfaces of leaves, stems and calyces of the **Zataria multiflora** plant at different development stages and water conditions. Using scanning electron microscope (SEM) technology, the physical characteristics of these trichomes and their responses to environmental stress are observed. ### Main research purposes: - **Analysis of volatile components**: - To identify the volatile components of **Zataria multiflora** at 50% and 100% of the flowering period. - To compare the content changes of these volatile components under normal and drought - stress conditions. - **Trichome research**: - To determine the types, densities and structures of glandular and non - glandular hairs on the surfaces of leaves, stems and calyces at different development stages and water conditions. - To analyze the influence of water stress on the physical characteristics of trichomes. ### Research background: - **Zataria multiflora** is a medicinal and aromatic plant, belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is widely used in Iranian traditional medicine, usually as a substitute for thyme. - Volatile components are the main active substances of this plant, and their composition is affected by seasons, plant species and growth conditions. - Glandular and non - glandular hairs are important structures on the plant epidermis, participating in the secretion of volatile components and the plant's adaptation to environmental stress. ### Research methods: - **Analysis of volatile components**: Use equilibrium headspace analysis combined with GC - FID - MS technology to analyze the volatile components in fresh plant materials. - **Trichome research**: Use scanning electron microscope (SEM) technology to observe the types, densities and structures of trichomes on the surfaces of leaves, stems and calyces. ### Research significance: - Provide a scientific basis for the cultivation and harvesting of **Zataria multiflora**, especially at specific development stages, optimizing according to the required compounds and their concentrations. - Increase the understanding of the adaptation mechanisms of plants under different environmental conditions, which is helpful to improve its application value in the food and pharmacological industries.
