Abstract:Deciding whether a graph can be edge-decomposed into a matching and a $k$-bounded linear forest was recently shown by Campbell, H{ö}rsch and Moore to be NP-complete for every $k \ge 9$, and solvable in polynomial time for $k=1,2$. In the first part of this paper, we close this gap by showing that this problem is in NP-complete for every $k \ge 3$. In the second part of the paper, we show that deciding whether a graph can be edge-decomposed into a matching and a $k$-bounded star forest is polynomially solvable for any $k \in \mathbb{N} \cup \{ \infty \}$, answering another question by Campbell, H{ö}rsch and Moore from the same paper.

Abstract:The overlap graphs of subtrees in a tree (SOGs) generalise many other graphs classes with set representation characterisations. The complexity of recognising SOGs in open. The complexities of recognising many subclasses of SOGs are known. We consider several subclasses of SOGs by restricting the underlying tree. For a fixed integer $k \geq 3$, we consider: \begin{my_itemize} \item The overlap graphs of subtrees in a tree where that tree has $k$ leaves \item The overlap graphs of subtrees in trees that can be derived from a given input tree by subdivision and have at least 3 leaves \item The overlap and intersection graphs of paths in a tree where that tree has maximum degree $k$ \end{my_itemize} We show that the recognition problems of these classes are NP-complete. For all other parameters we get circle graphs, well known to be polynomially recognizable.

Abstract:A $k$-star colouring of a graph $G$ is a function $f:V(G)\to\{0,1,\dots,k-1\}$ such that $f(u)\neq f(v)$ for every edge $uv$ of $G$, and every bicoloured connected subgraph of $G$ is a star. The star chromatic number of $G$, $\chi_s(G)$, is the least integer $k$ such that $G$ is $k$-star colourable. We prove that $\chi_s(G)\geq \lceil (d+4)/2\rceil$ for every $d$-regular graph $G$ with $d\geq 3$. We reveal the structure and properties of even-degree regular graphs $G$ that attain this lower bound. The structure of such graphs $G$ is linked with a certain type of Eulerian orientations of $G$. Moreover, this structure can be expressed in the LC-VSP framework of Telle and Proskurowski (SIDMA, 1997), and hence can be tested by an FPT algorithm with the parameter either treewidth, cliquewidth, or rankwidth. We prove that for $p\geq 2$, a $2p$-regular graph $G$ is $(p+2)$-star colourable only if $n:=|V(G)|$ is divisible by $(p+1)(p+2)$. For each $p\geq 2$ and $n$ divisible by $(p+1)(p+2)$, we construct a $2p$-regular Hamiltonian graph on $n$ vertices which is $(p+2)$-star colourable. The problem $k$-STAR COLOURABILITY takes a graph $G$ as input and asks whether $G$ is $k$-star colourable. We prove that 3-STAR COLOURABILITY is NP-complete for planar bipartite graphs of maximum degree three and arbitrarily large girth. Besides, it is coNP-hard to test whether a bipartite graph of maximum degree eight has a unique 3-star colouring up to colour swaps. For $k\geq 3$, $k$-STAR COLOURABILITY of bipartite graphs of maximum degree $k$ is NP-complete, and does not even admit a $2^{o(n)}$-time algorithm unless ETH fails.

Abstract:Luo et al. conjectured that for a tree T with bipartition X and Y , if a k -connected bipartite graph G with minimum degree at least k+max⁡{|X|,|Y|} , then G has a subtree TG isomorphic to T such that G−V(TG) is k -connected. Although this conjecture has been validated for spiders and caterpillars in cases where k≤3 , and also for paths with odd order, its general applicability has remained an open question. In this paper, we establish the validity of this conjecture for k≤3 with the girth under of G at least the diameter of G minus one.

Abstract:For a loopless multigraph $G$, the fractional arboricity $Arb(G)$ is the maximum of $\frac{|E(H)|}{|V(H)|-1}$ over all subgraphs $H$ with at least two vertices. Generalizing the Nash-Williams Arboricity Theorem, the Nine Dragon Tree Conjecture asserts that if $Arb(G)\le k+\frac{d}{k+d+1}$, then $G$ decomposes into $k+1$ forests with one having maximum degree at most $d$. The conjecture was previously proved for $d=k+1$ and for $k=1$ when $d \le 6$. We prove it for all $d$ when $k \le 2$, except for $(k,d)=(2,1)$.

Agreement forests of caterpillar trees: complexity, kernelization and branching

Abstract:Given a set $X$ of species, a phylogenetic tree is an unrooted binary tree whose leaves are bijectively labelled by $X$. Such trees can be used to show the way species evolve over time. One way of understanding how topologically different two phylogenetic trees are, is to construct a minimum-size agreement forest: a partition of $X$ into the smallest number of blocks, such that the blocks induce homeomorphic, non-overlapping subtrees in both trees. This comparison yields insight into commonalities and differences in the evolution of $X$ across the two trees. Computing a smallest agreement forest is NP-hard (Hein, Jiang, Wang and Zhang, Discrete Applied Mathematics 71(1-3), 1996). In this work we study the problem on caterpillars, which are path-like phylogenetic trees. We will demonstrate that, even if we restrict the input to this highly restricted subclass, the problem remains NP-hard and is in fact APX-hard. Furthermore we show that for caterpillars two standard reductions rules well known in the literature yield a tight kernel of size at most $7k$, compared to $15k$ for general trees (Kelk and Simone, SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 33(3), 2019). Finally we demonstrate that we can determine if two caterpillars have an agreement forest with at most $k$ blocks in $O^*(2.49^k)$ time, compared to $O^*(3^k)$ for general trees (Chen, Fan and Sze, Theoretical Computater Science 562, 2015), where $O^*(.)$ suppresses polynomial factors.

Abstract:A book embedding of the complete graph $K_n$ needs $\lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil$ pages and the page-subgraphs can be chosen to be spanning paths (for $n$ even) and one spanning star for $n$ odd. Abstract:Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the Turán number $ex(n, \mathcal{F})$ denotes the maximum number of edges in any $\mathcal{F}$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Recently, Alon and Frankl studied of maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\{K_{k+1}, M_{s+1}\}$-free graph, where $K_{k+1}$ is a complete graph on $k+1$ vertices and $M_{s+1}$ is a matching of $s+1$ edges. They determined the exact value of $ex(n, \{K_{k+1},M_{s+1}\})$. In this paper, we extend the matching $M_{s+1}$ to star forest $(s+1)S_l$, and determine the exact value of $ex(n, \{K_{k+1},(s+1)S_l\})$ for sufficiently large enough $n$. Furthermore, all the extremal graphs are obtained.

Complexity results on the decomposition of a digraph into directed linear forests and out-stars

Abstract:We consider two decomposition problems in directed graphs. We say that a digraph is $k$-bounded for some $k \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}$ if each of its connected components contains at most $k$ arcs. For the first problem, a directed linear forest is a collection of vertex-disjoint directed paths and we consider the problem of decomposing a given digraph into a $k$-bounded and an $\ell$-bounded directed linear forest for some fixed $k,\ell \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}\cup \{\infty\}$. We give a full dichotomy for this problem by showing that it can be solved in polynomial time if $k+\ell \leq 3$ and is NP-complete otherwise. This answers a question of Campbell, Hörsch, and Moore. For the second problem, we say that an out-galaxy is a vertex-disjoint collection of out-stars. Again, we give a full dichotomy of when a given digraph can be edge-decomposed into a $k$-bounded and an $\ell$-bounded out-galaxy for fixed $k,\ell \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}\cup \{\infty\}$. More precisely, we show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time if $\min\{k,\ell\}\in \{1,\infty\}$ and is NP-complete otherwise.

On distinguishing special trees by their chromatic symmetric functions

Abstract:In 1995, Stanley introduced the well-known chromatic symmetric function $X_{G}(x_{1},x_{2},\ldots)$ of a graph $G$. It is a sum of monomial symmetric functions such that for each vertex coloring of $G$ there is exactly one of these summands. The question, whether $X_{G}(x_1,x_{2},\ldots)$ distinguishes nonisomorphic trees with the same number of vertices, is still open in general. For special trees it has already been shown. In 2008, Martin, Morin and Wagner proved it for spiders and some caterpillars. We decompose a tree by separating the leafs and their neighbors and do the same to the remaining forest until there remains a forest with vertices of degree not greater than $1$. For nonisomorphic trees $G$ and $H$ with the same number of vertices and special properties concerning their number of leafs and leaf neighbors for each subgraph in their leaf decomposition we prove that the chromatic symmetric function distinguishes the graphs. Our idea is to find independent partitions of $G$ and $H$ with respectively a block of maximal cardinality for $G$ as well as for $H$. These cardinalities are different for graphs $G$ and $H$ with special properties of their leaf decompositions. Additionally, we give explicit formulas for the cardinality of such a maximal block of an independent partition of star connections and spiders.

Abstract:There are seven graph problems grouped into three classes of domination, Hamiltonicity and treewidth, which are known to be $\mathcal{NP}$-complete for bipartite graphs, but tractable for convex bipartite graphs. We show these problems to remain $\mathcal{NP}$-complete for tree convex bipartite graphs, even when the associated trees are stars or combs respectively. Tree convex bipartite graphs generalize convex bipartite graphs by associating a tree, instead of a path, on one set of the vertices, such that for every vertex in another set, the neighborhood of this vertex is a subtree.

Abstract:Tree spanners approximate distances within graphs; a subtree of a graph is a tree $t$-spanner of the graph if and only if for every pair of vertices their distance in the subtree is at most $t$ times their distance in the graph. When a graph contains a subtree of diameter at most $t$, then trivially admits a tree $t$-spanner. Now, determining whether a graph admits a tree $t$-spanner of diameter at most $t+1$ is an NP complete problem, when $t\geq 4$, and it is tractable, when $t\leq 3$. Although it is not known whether it is tractable to decide graphs that admit a tree 3-spanner of any diameter, an efficient algorithm to determine graphs that admit a tree 3-spanner of diameter at most 5 is presented. Moreover, it is proved that if a graph of diameter at most 3 admits a tee 3-spanner, then it admits a tree 3-spanner of diameter at most 5. Hence, this algorithm decides tree 3-spanner admissibility of diameter at most 3 graphs.

Connectivity keeping spiders in k-connected graphs

Abstract:Fujita and Kawarabayashi [J. Combin. Theory, Ser. B 98 (2008), 805--811] conjectured that for all positive integers $k$, $m$, there is a (least) non-negative integer $f_{k}(m)$ such that every $k$-connected graph $G$ with $\delta(G)\geq \lfloor\frac{3k}{2}\rfloor+ f_{k}(m)-1$ contains a connected subgraph $W$ of order $m$ such that $G-V(W)$ is still $k$-connected. Mader confirmed Fujita-Kawarabayashi's conjecture by proving $f_{k}(m)=m$ and $W$ is a path. In this paper, the authors will confirm Fujita-Kawarabayashi's conjecture again by proving $f_{k}(m)=m$ and $W$ is a spider by a new method, where a spider is a tree with at most one vertex of degree at least three. Meanwhile, this result will verify a conjecture proposed by Mader [J. Graph Theory 65 (2010), 61--69] for the case of the spider.

Spotting Trees with Few Leaves

Abstract:We show two results related to the Hamiltonicity and $k$-Path algorithms in undirected graphs by Björklund [FOCS'10], and Björklund et al., [arXiv'10]. First, we demonstrate that the technique used can be generalized to finding some $k$-vertex tree with $l$ leaves in an $n$-vertex undirected graph in $O^*(1.657^k2^{l/2})$ time. It can be applied as a subroutine to solve the $k$-Internal Spanning Tree ($k$-IST) problem in $O^*(\min(3.455^k, 1.946^n))$ time using polynomial space, improving upon previous algorithms for this problem. In particular, for the first time we break the natural barrier of $O^*(2^n)$. Second, we show that the iterated random bipartition employed by the algorithm can be improved whenever the host graph admits a vertex coloring with few colors; it can be an ordinary proper vertex coloring, a fractional vertex coloring, or a vector coloring. In effect, we show improved bounds for $k$-Path and Hamiltonicity in any graph of maximum degree $\Delta=4,\ldots,12$ or with vector chromatic number at most 8.

Abstract:Graph modification problems ask for the minimal number of vertex/edge additions/deletions needed to make a graph satisfy some predetermined property. A (meta) problem of this type, which was raised by Yannakakis in 1981, asks to determine for which properties ${\mathcal P}$, it is NP-hard to compute the smallest number of edge deletions needed to make a graph satisfy ${\mathcal P}$. Despite being extensively studied in the past 40 years, this problem is still wide open. In fact, it is open even when ${\mathcal P}$ is the property of being $H$-free, for some fixed graph $H$. In this case we use $\text{rem}_{H}(G)$ to denote the smallest number of edge deletions needed to turn $G$ into an $H$-free graph. Alon, Sudakov and Shapira [Annals of Math. 2009] proved that if $H$ is not bipartite, then computing $\text{rem}_{H}(G)$ is NP-hard. They left open the problem of classifying the bipartite graphs $H$ for which computing $\text{rem}_{H}(G)$ is NP-hard. In this paper we resolve this problem when $H$ is a forest, showing that computing $\text{rem}_{H}(G)$ is polynomial-time solvable if $H$ is a star forest and NP-hard otherwise. Our main innovation in this work lies in introducing a new graph theoretic approach for Yannakakis's problem, which differs significantly from all prior works on this subject. In particular, we prove new results concerning an old and famous conjecture of Erdős and Sós, which are of independent interest.

Abstract:Simple drawings are drawings of graphs in which two edges have at most one common point (either a common endpoint, or a proper crossing). It has been an open question whether every simple drawing of a complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$ contains a plane spanning tree as a subdrawing. We answer this question to the positive by showing that for every simple drawing of $K_{m,n}$ and for every vertex $v$ in that drawing, the drawing contains a shooting star rooted at $v$, that is, a plane spanning tree containing all edges incident to $v$.

Abstract:A path of order $n$ is denoted by $P_n$, and a star of order $n$ is denoted by $S_{n-1}$. A star-path forest is a forest whose connected components are paths and stars. Antidirected trees in dense digraphs

Abstract:We show that if $D$ is an $n$-vertex digraph with more than $(k-1)n$ arcs that does not contain any of three forbidden digraphs, then $D$ contains every antidirected tree on $k$ arcs. The forbidden digraphs are those orientations of $K_{2, \lceil k/12\rceil}$ where each of the vertices in the class of size two has either out-degree $0$ or in-degree $0$. This proves a conjecture of Addario-Berry et al. for a broad class of digraphs, and generalises a result for $K_{2, \lfloor k/12\rfloor}$-free graphs by Balasubramanian and Dobson. We also show that every digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices with more than $(k-1)n$ arcs contains every antidirected $k$-arc caterpillar, thus solving the above conjecture for caterpillars. This generalises a result of Perles.

Abstract:For some k∈Z≥0∪{∞} , we call a linear forest k -bounded if each of its components has at most k edges. We will say a (k,l) -bounded linear forest decomposition of a graph G is a partition of E(G) into the edge sets of two linear forests Fk,Fl where Fk is k -bounded and Fl is l -bounded. We show that the problem of deciding whether a given graph has such a decomposition is NP-complete if both k and l are at least 2, NP-complete if k≥9 and l=1 , and is in P for (k,l)=(2,1) . Before this, the only known NP-complete cases were the (2,2) and (3,3) cases. Our hardness result answers a question of Bermond et al. from 1984. We also show that planar graphs of girth at least nine decompose into a linear forest and a matching, which in particular is stronger than 3-edge-coloring such graphs.
