Abstract:A book embedding of the complete graph $K_n$ needs $\lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil$ pages and the page-subgraphs can be chosen to be spanning paths (for $n$ even) and one spanning star for $n$ odd. We show that all page-subgraphs can be chosen to be {\rm star forests} by including one extra {\rm cross-cap} page or two new ordinary pages.

Abstract:We show that every planar graph has a monotone topological 2-page book embedding where at most (4n-10)/5 (of potentially 3n-6) edges cross the spine, and every edge crosses the spine at most once; such an edge is called a biarc. We can also guarantee that all edges that cross the spine cross it in the same direction (e.g., from bottom to top). For planar 3-trees we can further improve the bound to (3n-9)/4, and for so-called Kleetopes we obtain a bound of at most (n-8)/3 edges that cross the spine. The bound for Kleetopes is tight, even if the drawing is not required to be monotone. A Kleetope is a plane triangulation that is derived from another plane triangulation T by inserting a new vertex v_f into each face f of T and then connecting v_f to the three vertices of f.

Abstract:A "book with k pages" consists of a straight line (the "spine") and k half-planes (the "pages"), such that the boundary of each page is the spine. If a graph is drawn on a book with k pages in such a way that the vertices lie on the spine, and each edge is contained in a page, the result is a k-page book drawing (or simply a k-page drawing). The k-page crossing number nu_k(G) of a graph G is the minimum number of crossings in a k-page drawing of G. In this paper we investigate the k-page crossing numbers of complete graphs K_n. We use semidefinite programming techniques to give improved lower bounds on nu_k(K_n) for various values of k. We also use a maximum satisfiability reformulation to calculate the exact value of nu_k(K_n) for several values of k and n. Finally, we investigate the best construction known for drawing K_n in k pages, calculate the resulting number of crossings, and discuss this upper bound in the light of the new results reported in this paper.

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph on $n$ vertices, and let $\lambda_1(L(G))\ge \cdots\ge \lambda_{n-1}(L(G))\ge \lambda_n(L(G))=0$ be the eigenvalues of its Laplacian matrix $L(G)$. Brouwer conjectured that for every $1\le k\le n$, $\sum_{i=1}^k \lambda_i(L(G)) \le |E|+\binom{k+1}{2}$. Here, we prove the following weak version of Brouwer's conjecture: For every $1\leq k \leq n$, \[ \sum_{i=1}^k \lambda_i(L(G)) \leq |E|+k^2+15k\log{k}+65k. \] For a graph $G=(V,E)$, we define its partition density $\tilde{\rho}(G)$ as the maximum, over all subgraphs $H$ of $G$, of the ratio between the number of edges of $H$ and the number of vertices in the largest connected component of $H$. Our argument relies on the study of the structure of the graphs $G$ satisfying $\tilde{\rho}(G)< k$. In particular, using a result of Alon, McDiarmid and Reed, we show that every such graph can be decomposed into at most $k+ 15\log{k}+65$ edge-disjoint star forests (that is, forests whose connected components are all isomorphic to stars). In addition, we show that for every graph $G=(V,E)$ and every $1\le k\le |V|$, \[ \sum_{i=1}^k \lambda_i(L(G)) \leq |E|+k\cdot \nu(G) + \left\lfloor\frac{k}{2}\right\rfloor, \] where $\nu(G)$ is the maximum size of a matching in $G$.

Abstract:Every $k$-tree has book thickness at most $k+1$, and this bound is best possible for all $k\geq3$. Vandenbussche et al. (2009) proved that every $k$-tree that has a smooth degree-3 tree decomposition with width $k$ has book thickness at most $k$. We prove this result is best possible for $k\geq 4$, by constructing a $k$-tree with book thickness $k+1$ that has a smooth degree-4 tree decomposition with width $k$. This solves an open problem of Vandenbussche et al. (2009)

Abstract:It is shown that the number of pages required for a book embedding of a graph is the maximum of the numbers needed for any of the maximal nonseparable subgraphs and that a plane graph in which every triangle bounds a face has a two-page book embedding. The latter extends a theorem of H. Whitney and gives two-page book embeddings for $X$-trees and square grids.

Abstract:A $ k $-page book drawing of a graph $ G $ is a drawing of $ G $ on $ k $ halfplanes with common boundary $ l $, a line, where the vertices are on $ l $ and the edges cannot cross $ l $. The $ k $-page book crossing number of the graph $ G $, denoted by $ \nu_k(G) $, is the minimum number of edge-crossings over all $ k $-page book drawings of $ G $. Let $G=K_n$ be the complete graph on $n$ vertices. We improve the lower bounds on $ \nu_k(K_n) $ for all $ k\geq 14 $ and determine $ \nu_k(K_n) $ whenever $ 2 < n/k \leq 3 $. Our proofs rely on bounding the number of edges in convex graphs with small local crossing numbers. In particular, we determine the maximum number of edges that a convex graph with local crossing number at most $ \ell $ can have for $ \ell\leq 4 $.

Decomposition of Geometric Graphs into Star Forests

Abstract:We solve a problem of Dujmović and Wood (2007) by showing that a complete convex geometric graph on $n$ vertices cannot be decomposed into fewer than $n-1$ star-forests, each consisting of noncrossing edges. This bound is clearly tight. We also discuss similar questions for abstract graphs.

Abstract:An embedding of a graph in a book consists of a linear order of its vertices along the spine of the book and of an assignment of its edges to the pages of the book, so that no two edges on the same page cross. The book thickness of a graph is the minimum number of pages over all its book embeddings. Accordingly, the book thickness of a class of graphs is the maximum book thickness over all its members. In this paper, we address a long-standing open problem regarding the exact book thickness of the class of planar graphs, which previously was known to be either three or four. We settle this problem by demonstrating planar graphs that require four pages in any of their book embeddings, thus establishing that the book thickness of the class of planar graphs is four.

Abstract:An embedding of a graph in a book, called book embedding, consists of a linear ordering of its vertices along the spine of the book and an assignment of its edges to the pages of the book, so that no two edges on the same page cross. The book thickness of a graph is the minimum number of pages over all its book embeddings. For planar graphs, a fundamental result is due to Yannakakis, who proposed an algorithm to compute embeddings of planar graphs in books with four pages. Our main contribution is a technique that generalizes this result to a much wider family of nonplanar graphs, namely to k-map graphs. In fact, our technique can deal with any nonplanar graph having a biconnected skeleton of crossing-free edges whose faces have bounded degree. We prove that this family of graphs has book thickness bounded in k, and as a corollary, we obtain the first constant upper bound for the book thickness of optimal 2-planar graphs.

Abstract:For a loopless multigraph $G$, the fractional arboricity $Arb(G)$ is the maximum of $\frac{|E(H)|}{|V(H)|-1}$ over all subgraphs $H$ with at least two vertices. Generalizing the Nash-Williams Arboricity Theorem, the Nine Dragon Tree Conjecture asserts that if $Arb(G)\le k+\frac{d}{k+d+1}$, then $G$ decomposes into $k+1$ forests with one having maximum degree at most $d$. The conjecture was previously proved for $d=k+1$ and for $k=1$ when $d \le 6$. We prove it for all $d$ when $k \le 2$, except for $(k,d)=(2,1)$.

Abstract:Simple drawings are drawings of graphs in which two edges have at most one common point (either a common endpoint, or a proper crossing). It has been an open question whether every simple drawing of a complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$ contains a plane spanning tree as a subdrawing. We answer this question to the positive by showing that for every simple drawing of $K_{m,n}$ and for every vertex $v$ in that drawing, the drawing contains a shooting star rooted at $v$, that is, a plane spanning tree containing all edges incident to $v$.

Star-Forest Decompositions of Complete Graphs

Abstract:We deal with the problem of decomposing a complete geometric graph into plane star-forests. In particular, we disprove a recent conjecture by Pach, Saghafian and Schnider by constructing for each $n$ a complete geometric graph on $n$ vertices which can be decomposed into $\frac{n}{2}+1$ plane star-forests. Additionally we prove that for even $n$, every decomposition of complete abstract graph on $n$ vertices into $\frac{n}{2}+1$ star-forests is composed of a perfect matching and $\frac{n}{2}$ star-forests with two edge-balanced components, which we call broken double stars.

Abstract:A path of order $n$ is denoted by $P_n$, and a star of order $n$ is denoted by $S_{n-1}$. A star-path forest is a forest whose connected components are paths and stars. In this paper we determine the maximum spectral radius of graphs that contain no copy of $kS_{\ell-1}\cup P_{\ell}$, $k_1S_{2\ell -1}\cup k_2P_{2\ell}$ or $kS_{4}\cup 2P_{5}$ for $n$ appropriately large.

Abstract:A graph $G$ has a $k$-page book embedding if $G$ can be embedded into a $k$-page book. The minimum $k$ such that $G$ has a $k$-page book embedding is the book thickness of $G$, denoted $bt(G)$. Most of the work on this subject has been done for unoriented graphs and oriented acyclic graphs (no directed cycles). In this work we discuss oriented graphs $\overrightarrow{D}$ containing directed cycles by using oriented book embeddings and oriented book thickness, $obt(\overrightarrow{D})$. To characterize $\overrightarrow{D}$ such that $obt(\overrightarrow{D}) = k$, we define the class $\mathcal{M}^k$ of $k$-page critical oriented graphs to be all oriented graphs $\overrightarrow{D}$ with $obt(\overrightarrow{D}) =k$, but for every proper oriented subgraph of $\overrightarrow{D}$, denoted $\overrightarrow{D}'$, we have that $obt(\overrightarrow{D}') < k$. Determining $\mathcal{M}^k$ for general $k$ is challenging; we narrow down the list of oriented graphs in $\mathcal{M}^k$ for small $k$. In this work we show complete lists for $\mathcal{M}^1$ and for $\mathcal{M}^2 \cap \mathcal{U}$, where $\mathcal{U}$ consists of all strictly dicyclic oriented graphs, that is, oriented graphs containing exactly one oriented cycle, which is a directed cycle. Abstract:Károlyi, Pach, and Tóth proved that every 2-edge-colored straight-line drawing of the complete graph contains a monochromatic plane spanning tree. It is open if this statement generalizes to other classes of drawings, specifically, to simple drawings of the complete graph. These are drawings where edges are represented by Jordan arcs, any two of which intersect at most once. We present two partial results towards such a generalization. First, we show that the statement holds for cylindrical simple drawings. (In a cylindrical drawing, all vertices are placed on two concentric circles and no edge crosses either circle.) Second, we introduce a relaxation of the problem in which the graph is $k$-edge-colored, and the target structure must be hypochromatic, that is, avoid (at least) one color class. In this setting, we show that every $\lceil (n+5)/6\rceil$-edge-colored monotone simple drawing of $K_n$ contains a hypochromatic plane spanning tree. (In a monotone drawing, every edge is represented as an $x$-monotone curve.)

Abstract:A $k$-book in a hypergraph consists of $k$ Berge triangles sharing a common edge. In this paper we prove that the number of the hyperedges in a $k$-book-free 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices is at most $\frac{n^2}{8}(1+o(1))$.

Path Odd-Covers of Graphs

Abstract:We introduce and study "path odd-covers", a weakening of Gallai's path decomposition problem and a strengthening of the linear arboricity problem. The "path odd-cover number" $p_2(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a collection of paths whose vertex sets are contained in $V(G)$ and whose symmetric difference of edge sets is $E(G)$. We prove an upper bound on $p_2(G)$ in terms of the maximum degree $\Delta$ and the number of odd-degree vertices $v_{\text{odd}}$ of the form $\max\left\{v_{\text{odd}}/{2}, 2\left\lceil {\Delta}/{2}\right \rceil\right\}$. This bound is only a factor of $2$ from a rather immediate lower bound of the form $\max \left\{ {v_{\text{odd}} }/{2} , \left\lceil {\Delta}/{2}\right\rceil \right\}$. We also investigate some natural relaxations of the problem which highlight the connection between the path odd-cover number and other well-known graph parameters. For example, when allowing for subdivisions of $G$, the previously mentioned lower bound is always tight except in some trivial cases. Further, a relaxation that allows for the addition of isolated vertices to $G$ leads to a match with the linear arboricity when $G$ is Eulerian. Finally, we transfer our observations to establish analogous results for cycle odd-covers.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Gyárfás (1976), which asserts that any family of trees $T_1, \dots, T_{n}$ where each $T_k$ has $k$ vertices packs into $K_n$. We do so by translating the decomposition problem into a labeling problem, namely complete labeling. Our proof employs the polynomial method using a functional reformulation of the conjecture.
