Abstract:The NLPComp team participated in two TACKBP2012 tasks: Regular Entity Linking and Regular Slot Filling. For the entity linking task, a three-step entity linking system is developed. In the first step, a list of possible candidates are selected. Then the best candidate is identified to decide whether a link exists. In addition, a document clustering algorithm is used to group NIL queries. This system uses the Wikipedia anchor terms to enlarge the number of candidate instances. It then incorporates the topic modelling technique to select features of topical words. However, our system produces a poor answer coverage and the NIL detection system brings significant loss in the final Fscore. For the slot filling task, we developed a system which combines rule-based approach and multiple instance learning technique. In rulebased slot filling, a number of trigger words are collected from the English Wikipedia and the frequency feature is used to select final slot value(s). When extracting slot value(s) using the multiple instance learning technique, 2009 and 2010 KBP slot filling queries and manually annotated answers are used to create named entity pairs which exhibit a particular relation. Then bags of sentences containing named entity pair are extracted from the KBP source. Our system reaches the median level among all the participating systems.

Abstract:This paper summarize our work in TAC2010 knowledge base population track. We submit result for english entity linking and regular slot filling task. For entity linking we use a frequency based method as baseline and implement a collective method following (Han et al., 2011) for entity linking. For slot filling, we use wikipedia infobox as a source of supervision by mapping back to sentences to generate more training sentences. Evaluation result shows the strength and weakness of both our approaches.

Abstract:The Semantic Textual Similarity (STS) task aims to exam the degree of semantic equivalence between sentences (Agirre et al., 2012). This paper presents the work of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyUCOMP) team which has participated in the STS core and typed tasks of SemEval2013. For the STS core task, the PolyUCOMP system disambiguates words senses using contexts and then determine sentence similarity by counting the number of senses they shared. For the STS typed task, the string kernel (Lodhi et al., 2002) is used to compute similarity between two entities to avoid string variations in entities.

Abstract:This paper describes the systems of PKUTM in Text Analysis Conference (TAC) 2010. We participated in the Recognizing Textual Entailment (RTE) track and the Summarization track. For the RTE track, we propose a method to map every node in the hypothesis to one or more nodes in the text. With the help of named-entities tools, MINIPAR relationships, and regular patterns to recognize temporal and numeric expressions, some nodes are merged into one node. We transform the hypothesis by using semantic knowledge from sources like WordNet, VerbOcean, and LingPipe. In the Summarization track, we propose a unified framework for both kinds of summarization. We employ a manifold-ranking model to select sentences and a novel sentence ordering method to generate final summaries. The underlying idea of the proposed approach is that a good summary is expected to include the sentences with both high biased information richness and high information novelty. The evaluation results show that our proposed two frameworks are very effective for RTE and Summarization tasks, respectively.

Abstract:This paper reports the ICL KBP team participated in the TAC2010-Knowledge Base Popolation Track. We submitted results for Entity Linking task and Slot Filling task. For Entity Linking, we implemented a simple unsupervised method to select the candidate entities in the Wikipedia Reference Knowledge Base for the given query document which describes the query name-string. For Slot Filling, we treat it as a binary classification problem for each candidate slot value and use type constraint to filter the results. Experimental results reveals that our method reaches the median values of all participants for both tasks.

Abstract:This paper presents the work of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyUCOMP) team which has participated in the Semantic Textual Similarity task of SemEval-2012. The PolyUCOMP system combines semantic vectors with skip bigrams to determine sentence similarity. The semantic vector is used to compute similarities between sentence pairs using the lexical database WordNet and the Wikipedia corpus. The use of skip bigram is to introduce the order of words in measuring sentence similarity.

Abstract:Entity Linking is to link a name string from plain-text documents to the corresponding entry in given knowledge base. In this paper we demonstrate our entity linking system for TAC KBP 2011 Track. Our system implements pairwise and listwise learning to rank methods to create a ranking list of candidates with several kinds of features, including context similarity, term frequency, key entity extraction and WikiPage information. We participate in entity linking and cross-lingual entity linking task. We use random forest to validate the top 1 candidate recommended by our system. We achieve a performance of 72.9% F1 measure for both two tasks.

Abstract:This paper describes the THUNLP system submitted to Entity Linking task of KBP Track in TAC 2013. This system achieves the third place with a B-cubed+ F1 score of 0.712 in mono-lingual entity linking task. In Chinese cross-lingual entity linking, this system achieved B-cubed+ F1 score of 0.647 with the help of Google Translate.

Abstract:We participated in the high-level feature extraction and interactive-search task for TRECVID 2006. Interaction and integration of multi-modality media types such as visual, audio and textual data in video are the essence of video content analysis. Although any uni-modality type partially expresses limited semantics less or more, video semantics are fully manifested only by interaction and integration of any unimodal. For the high-level feature extraction and interactive-search tasks, taking the temporal-sequenced associated cooccurence characteristic of multimodal media data in video into consideration, we develop a new approach to represent the relations between seperate shots, which mainly uses SimFusion and Locality Preserving Projections (LPP). SimFusion is an effective algorithm to reinforce or propagate the similarity relations between multi-modalities. LPP is an optimal combination of linear and nonlinear dimensionality reduction method. For high-level feature extraction task, e.g.semantic concept detection which actually is a pattern recognition problem, we use SVM as the powerful classifier to perform detection. For interactive search, we make use of relevance feedback to revise search results. We submitted one fun for each task.

Abstract:This paper provides an overview of the Shared Task at the 4th CCF Conference on Natural Language Processing and Chinese Computing NLPCC 2015: Entity Recognition and Linking in Search Queries, where participant systems are required to recognize entity mentions from short search queries in Chinese, and further link them into a given structured knowledge base. In this paper, we introduce how the task is defined, how we collect the datasets and last we report the evaluation results with a brief analysis.

Abstract:The TAC 2010 Guided Summarization task requires participants to generate coherent summaries with the guidance of predefined categories and aspects. In this paper, we present our two extractive summarization systems. In the first system, we employ a topic model Labeled LDA to model the aspects. The correspondence between the aspects and the topics in Labeled LDA is established through identifying indicative words for each aspect. After training and inference of Labeled LDA, we get the salience scores of concepts (named entities and bigrams) from topic concept distributions. Then we use an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) based maximal coverage method to generate summaries. In the other system which also uses ILP and maximal coverage during sentence extraction, the salience of concepts is obtained using a pairwise learning to rank algorithm - RankNet. The training samples are constructed based on the human annotated Pyramid data.

Abstract:Coordination is an important and common syntactic construction which is not handled well by state of the art parsers. Coordinations in the Penn Treebank are missing internal structure in many cases, do not include explicit marking of the conjuncts and contain various errors and inconsistencies. In this work, we initiated manual annotation process for solving these issues. We identify the different elements in a coordination phrase and label each element with its function. We add phrase boundaries when these are missing, unify inconsistencies, and fix errors. The outcome is an extension of the PTB that includes consistent and detailed structures for coordinations. We make the coordination annotation publicly available, in hope that they will facilitate further research into coordination disambiguation.
TAC2010 Update Summarization and AESOP of ICL.

Abstract:For the guided summarization task of TAC 2010, we submitted two runs using the combination of manifold ranking score and aspects information. The only difference between these two runs is that one computes a score according to aspect information while the other one considers aspect coverage in each sentence. For the update summarization task, we adopt similar methods and simultaneously penalize the information overlap between docset B and docset A. For the AESOP task, we focused on No Models evaluation case and submitted three runs. The first one uses a simple linear combination of three ROUGE scores, including ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2 and ROUGE-SU4, with four human summaries as models. The other two methods extract term information from four human summaries, such as term frequency and model frequency, based on which we evaluate each automatic summary. The difference between these two runs is that one of them introduces more term information, such as bigram information.

Our classification and clustering solutions for XML documents have used both the structure and content information, where the frequent subtrees as structural units are used for content extraction from the XML document. In addition, we used the WordNet and the link information for better performance, and applied the structured link vector model for classification.

Abstract:This paper describes the USTC_NELSLIP systems submitted to the Trilingual Entity Detection and Linking (EDL) track in 2016 TAC Knowledge Base Population (KBP) contests. We have built two systems for entity discovery and mention detection (MD): one uses the conditional RNNLM and the other one uses the attention-based encoder-decoder framework. The entity linking (EL) system consists of two modules: a rule based candidate generation and a neural networks probability ranking model. Moreover, some simple string matching rules are used for NIL clustering. At the end, our best system has achieved an F1 score of 0.624 in the end-to-end typed mention ceaf plus metric.

We participated in the Question Answering (QA) track, and the Recognizing Textual Entailment (RTE) track. For question answering track, we enhanced the traditional question answering system by sentiment lexicon based opinion analysis. The rigid list questions are divided into two categories based on their answer types. And two snippet extraction approaches are proposed to answer squishy list questions. For RTE track, we design different strategies to recognize true entailment and false entailment. The similarity between hypothesis and text is measured to recognize true entailment. We detect the exact entity and relation mismatch to recognize the false entailment. The evaluation results show that the proposed approaches are very effective for the QA and RTE tasks. Exploring Entity-Level Spatial Relationships for Image-Text Matching

Abstract:Exploring the entity-level (i.e., objects in an image, words in a text) spatial relationship contributes to understanding multimedia content precisely. The ignorance of spatial information in previous works probably leads to misunderstandings of image contents. For instance, sentences ‘Boats are on the water’ and ‘Boats are under the water’ describe the same objects, but correspond to different sceneries. To this end, we utilize the relative position of objects to capture entity-level spatial relationships for image-text matching. Specifically, we fuse semantic and spatial relationships of image objects in a visual intra-modal relation module. The module performs promisingly to understand image contents and improve object representation learning. It contributes to capturing entity-level latent correspondence of image-text pairs. Then the query (text) plays a role of textual context to refine the interpretable alignments of image-text pairs in the inter-modal relation module. Our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art results on MSCOCO and Flickr30K datasets.
