Abstract:This paper describes the THUNLP system submitted to Entity Linking task of KBP Track in TAC 2013. This system achieves the third place with a B-cubed+ F1 score of 0.712 in mono-lingual entity linking task. In Chinese cross-lingual entity linking, this system achieved B-cubed+ F1 score of 0.647 with the help of Google Translate.

Abstract:Entity Linking is to link a name string from plain-text documents to the corresponding entry in given knowledge base. In this paper we demonstrate our entity linking system for TAC KBP 2011 Track. Our system implements pairwise and listwise learning to rank methods to create a ranking list of candidates with several kinds of features, including context similarity, term frequency, key entity extraction and WikiPage information. We participate in entity linking and cross-lingual entity linking task. We use random forest to validate the top 1 candidate recommended by our system. We achieve a performance of 72.9% F1 measure for both two tasks.

Abstract:Entity Linking (EL) is the task of resolving mentions to referential entities in a knowledge base, which facilitates applications such as information retrieval, question answering, and knowledge base population. In this paper, we propose a novel embedding method specifically designed for EL. The proposed model jointly learns word and entity embeddings which are located in different distributed spaces, and a bilinear model is introduced to simulate the interaction between words and entities. We treat EL as a ranking problem, and utilize a pairwise learning-to-rank framework with features constructed with learned embeddings as well as conventional EL features. Experimental results show the proposed model produces effective embeddings which improve the performance of our EL algorithm. Our method yields the state-of-the-art performances on two benchmark datasets CoNLL and TAC-KBP 2010.

Abstract:Knowledge bases play an increasing important role in many applications. However, many knowledge bases mainly focus on English knowledge, and have only a few knowledge for low-resource languages (LLs). If we can map the entities in LLs to these in high-resource languages (HLs), many knowledge such as relation between entities can be transferred from HLs to LLs. In this paper, we propose an efficient and effective Cross-Lingual Entity Matching approach (CL-EM) to enrich the existing cross-lingual links by learning to rank framework with the learned language-independent features, including cross-lingual topic features and document embedding features. In the experiments, we verified our approach on the existing cross-lingual links between Chinese Wikipedia and English Wikipedia by comparing it with other state-of-art approaches. In addition, we also discovered 141,754 new cross-lingual links between Baidu Baike and English Wikipedia, which almost doubles the number of the existing cross-lingual links.

Abstract:Entity Linking (EL) is the task of mapping mentions in natural-language text to their corresponding entities in a knowledge base (KB). Type modeling for mention and entity could be beneficial for entity linking. In this paper, we propose a type-guided semantic embedding approach to boost collective entity linking. We use Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) and dynamic convolutional neural network (DCNN) to model the mention and the entity respectively. Then, we build a graph with the semantic relatedness of mentions and entities for the collective entity linking. Finally, we evaluate our approach by comparing the state-of-the-art entity linking approaches over a wide range of very different data sets, such as TAC-KBP from 2009 to 2013, AIDA, DBPediaSpotlight, N3-Reuters-128, and N3-RSS-500. Besides, we also evaluate our approach with a Chinese Corpora. The experiments reveal that the modeling for entity type can be very beneficial to the entity linking.

Abstract:The NLPComp team participated in two TACKBP2012 tasks: Regular Entity Linking and Regular Slot Filling. For the entity linking task, a three-step entity linking system is developed. In the first step, a list of possible candidates are selected. Then the best candidate is identified to decide whether a link exists. In addition, a document clustering algorithm is used to group NIL queries. This system uses the Wikipedia anchor terms to enlarge the number of candidate instances. It then incorporates the topic modelling technique to select features of topical words. However, our system produces a poor answer coverage and the NIL detection system brings significant loss in the final Fscore. For the slot filling task, we developed a system which combines rule-based approach and multiple instance learning technique. In rulebased slot filling, a number of trigger words are collected from the English Wikipedia and the frequency feature is used to select final slot value(s). When extracting slot value(s) using the multiple instance learning technique, 2009 and 2010 KBP slot filling queries and manually annotated answers are used to create named entity pairs which exhibit a particular relation. Then bags of sentences containing named entity pair are extracted from the KBP source. Our system reaches the median level among all the participating systems.

Abstract:Entity linking is a task of linking mentions in text to the corresponding entities in a knowledge base. Recently, entity linking has received considerable attention and several online entity linking systems have been published. In this paper, we build an online bilingual entity linking system XLink, which is based on Wikipeida and Baidu Baike. XLink conducts two steps to link the mentions in the input document to entities in knowledge base, namely mention parsing and entity disambiguation. To eliminate dependency of language, we conduct mention parsing without any named entity recognition tools. To ensure the correctness of linking results, we propose an unsupervised generative probabilistic method and utilize text and knowledge joint representations to perform entity disambiguation. Experiments show that our system gets a state-of-the-art performance and a high time efficiency.

Abstract:This paper summarize our work in TAC2010 knowledge base population track. We submit result for english entity linking and regular slot filling task. For entity linking we use a frequency based method as baseline and implement a collective method following (Han et al., 2011) for entity linking. For slot filling, we use wikipedia infobox as a source of supervision by mapping back to sentences to generate more training sentences. Evaluation result shows the strength and weakness of both our approaches.

Abstract:This paper reports the ICL KBP team participated in the TAC2010-Knowledge Base Popolation Track. We submitted results for Entity Linking task and Slot Filling task. For Entity Linking, we implemented a simple unsupervised method to select the candidate entities in the Wikipedia Reference Knowledge Base for the given query document which describes the query name-string. For Slot Filling, we treat it as a binary classification problem for each candidate slot value and use type constraint to filter the results. Experimental results reveals that our method reaches the median values of all participants for both tasks.

Abstract:Entity Linking (EL) is a fundamental technology in Natural Language Processing and Knowledge Engineering. Previous works mainly focus on linking mentioned names recognized in news or articles to knowledge base. However, in social network, user-generated content is quite different from typical news text. Users sometimes use words more informally, even create new words. One entity may have different aliases mentioned by web users, so identifying these aliases calls for more attention than before. Several methods are proposed to mine aliases and a learning-to-rank framework is applied to combine different types of feature together. A binary classifier based on SVM is trained to judge whether the top one candidate given by ranking algorithm is accepted. The evaluation results of NLP&CC 2013(1) Entity Linking Track shows the effectiveness of this framework.

Abstract:This paper address the problem of entity linking. Specifically, given an entity mentioned in unstructured texts, the task is to link this entity with an entry stored in the existing knowledge base. This is an important task for information extraction. It can serve as a convenient gateway to encyclopedic information, and can greatly improve the web users' experience. Previous learning based solutions mainly focus on classification framework. However, it's more suitable to consider it as a ranking problem. In this paper, we propose a learning to rank algorithm for entity linking. It effectively utilizes the relationship information among the candidates when ranking. The experiment results on the TAC 2009 dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework. The proposed method achieves 18.5% improvement in terms of accuracy over the classification models for those entities which have corresponding entries in the Knowledge Base. The overall performance of the system is also better than that of the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Entity linking maps name mentions in the documents to entries in a knowledge base through resolving the name variations and ambiguities. In this paper, we propose three advancements for entity linking. Firstly, expanding acronyms can effectively reduce the ambiguity of the acronym mentions. However, only rule-based approaches relying heavily on the presence of text markers have been used for entity linking. In this paper, we propose a supervised learning algorithm to expand more complicated acronyms encountered, which leads to 15.1% accuracy improvement over state-of-the-art acronym expansion methods. Secondly, as entity linking annotation is expensive and labor intensive, to automate the annotation process without compromise of accuracy, we propose an instance selection strategy to effectively utilize the automatically generated annotation. In our selection strategy, an informative and diverse set of instances are selected for effective disambiguation. Lastly, topic modeling is used to model the semantic topics of the articles. These advancements give statistical significant improvement to entity linking individually. Collectively they lead the highest performance on KBP-2010 task.

Abstract:We study the task of entity linking for tweets, which tries to associate each mention in a tweet with a knowledge base entry. Two main challenges of this task are the dearth of information in a single tweet and the rich entity mention variations. To address these challenges, we propose a collective inference method that simultaneously resolves a set of mentions. Particularly, our model integrates three kinds of similarities, i.e., mention-entry similarity, entry-entry similarity, and mention-mention similarity, to enrich the context for entity linking, and to address irregular mentions that are not covered by the entity-variation dictionary. We evaluate our method on a publicly available data set and demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:Entity linking is the task of resolving ambiguous mentions in documents to their referent entities in a knowledge graph (KG). Existing solutions mainly rely on three kinds of information: local contextual similarity, global coherence, and prior probability. But the information of the mentions’ types is rarely utilized, which is helpful for precise entity linking. That is to say, if the type information of a mention is obtained from a mention classifier, we can exclude candidate entities with different types. However, the key challenge of realizing it lies in obtaining the type labels with appropriate granularity and performing entity linking with the error propagated from the mention classifier. To solve the challenges, we propose a model named type-oriented multi-task entity linking (TMTEL). First, we select types with appropriate granularity from the taxonomy of a KG, which is modeled as a nonlinear integer programming problem. Second, we use a multi-task learning framework to incorporate the selected types into entity linking. The type information is used to enhance the representation of the mentions’ context, which is more robust to the errors of the mention classifier. Experimental results show that our model outperforms multiple existing solutions.
OneNet: A Fine-Tuning Free Framework for Few-Shot Entity Linking via Large Language Model Prompting

Abstract:Entity Linking (EL) is the process of associating ambiguous textual mentions to specific entities in a knowledge base. Traditional EL methods heavily rely on large datasets to enhance their performance, a dependency that becomes problematic in the context of few-shot entity linking, where only a limited number of examples are available for training. To address this challenge, we present OneNet, an innovative framework that utilizes the few-shot learning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) without the need for fine-tuning. To the best of our knowledge, this marks a pioneering approach to applying LLMs to few-shot entity linking tasks. OneNet is structured around three key components prompted by LLMs: (1) an entity reduction processor that simplifies inputs by summarizing and filtering out irrelevant entities, (2) a dual-perspective entity linker that combines contextual cues and prior knowledge for precise entity linking, and (3) an entity consensus judger that employs a unique consistency algorithm to alleviate the hallucination in the entity linking reasoning. Comprehensive evaluations across seven benchmark datasets reveal that OneNet outperforms current state-of-the-art entity linking methods.

Abstract:Entity Linking (EL) aims to map mentions in a text to corresponding entities in a knowledge base. Existing EL methods usually rely on sufficient labeled data to achieve the best performance. However, the massive investment in data makes EL systems viable only to a limited audience. There is ample evidence that introducing entity types can provide the model prior knowledge to maintain the model performance in low-data regimes. Unfortunately, current low-data EL methods usually employ entity types by rule constraints, which are in a shallow manner. Furthermore, they usually ignore fine-grained interaction between mention and its context, resulting in insufficient semantic information of mention representation in low-data regimes. To this end, we propose a Class-Dynamic and Hierarchy-Constrained Network (CDHCN) for entity linking. Specifically, we propose a dynamic class scheme to learn a more effective representation for each entity type. Besides, we formulate a hierarchical constraint scheme to reduce the matching difficulty of the given mention and corresponding candidate entities by utilizing entity types. In addition, we propose an auxiliary task called mention position prediction (MPP) to obtain an informative mention representation in low-data regimes. Finally, extensive in-domain and out-of-domain experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.
NUS-I2R: Learning a Combined System for Entity Linking.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the joint participation of NUS and I2R team in Knowledge Base Population at Text analysis conference 2010. For Entity Linking, we analyze IR approaches and SVM classification in the disambiguation stage and develop a supervised learner for combining these approaches. The combined system performs better than the individual components and achieves results much better than the median. Furthermore, according to our error analysis, quite some errors are caused due to the different Wikipedia version is used, which hinder our system to show significant better performance.

Abstract:Entity linking (EL) is the process of linking entity mentions appearing in web text with their corresponding entities in a knowledge base. EL plays an important role in the fields of knowledge engineering and data mining, underlying a variety of downstream applications such as knowledge base population, content analysis, relation extraction, and question answering. In recent years, deep learning (DL), which has achieved tremendous success in various domains, has also been leveraged in EL methods to surpass traditional machine learning based methods and yield the state-of-the-art performance. In this survey, we present a comprehensive review and analysis of existing DL based EL methods. First of all, we propose a new taxonomy, which organizes existing DL based EL methods using three axes: embedding, feature, and algorithm. Then we systematically survey the representative EL methods along the three axes of the taxonomy. Later, we introduce ten commonly used EL data sets and give a quantitative performance analysis of DL based EL methods over these data sets. Finally, we discuss the remaining limitations of existing methods and highlight some promising future directions.
