Abstract:Microactuators provide controllable driving forces for precise positioning, manipulation and operation at the microscale. Development of microactuators using active materials is often hampered by their fabrication complexity and limited motion at small scales. Here we report light-fuelled artificial goosebumps to actuate passive microstructures, inspired by the natural reaction of hair bristling (piloerection) on biological skin. We use light-responsive liquid crystal elastomers as the responsive artificial skin to move three-dimensionally printed passive polymer microstructures. When exposed to a programmable femtosecond laser, the liquid crystal elastomer skin generates localized artificial goosebumps, resulting in precise actuation of the surrounding microstructures. Such microactuation can tilt micro-mirrors for the controlled manipulation of light reflection and disassemble capillary-force-induced self-assembled microstructures globally and locally. We demonstrate the potential application of the proposed microactuation system for information storage. This methodology provides precise, localized and controllable manipulation of microstructures, opening new possibilities for the development of programmable micromachines.

Abstract:Moisture actuators can accomplish humidity-triggered energy-conversion process, through material screening and structural design. Inspired by natural caterpillars and the hydrophilic properties of graphene oxide (GO), this work proposes a geometrical design of period-gradient structures in GO films for fabricating moisture actuators. These novel period-gradient-structured GO films exhibit excellent dynamic performance that they could deform at 1000° with a small radius in several seconds at a high relative humidity (RH ≈ 80%). The properties of fast actuating speed and high response to deformation are achieved through the structural designing of the sole GO film by a one-step formation process. A mechanics-based theoretical model combined with the finite element simulation is presented to demonstrate the actuating mechanism in geometry, moisture, and mechanics, which lays the foundation for potential applications of GO films in remote control, environmental monitoring, and man-machine interactions.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive soft actuators have attracted increasing attention in multiple fields since they exhibit unique advantages in safe interaction with humans and adaptability to dynamic environments. However, the study of untethered stimuli-responsive soft actuators has been limited by the slow response speed, irreversible deformations or inability in responding to multiple stimuli. Taking inspiration from the growth process of lotus leaves, we propose a novel design for an untethered soft actuator comprising graphene oxide (GO) and polyethylene (PE), which shows sensitive response to multiple stimuli, including moisture, light, heating, cooling, and elective volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and exhibits significant deformation at a rapid rate (up to 90.5 degrees/s). The high sensitivity of the actuators enables them to be powered by the neglected energy in daily life instead of requiring specialized energy sources, paving the way for the green and sustainable development in soft robotics. In addition, the bending modes and bending degrees of actuators can be programmed to meet the personalized needs of complex three-dimensional structures. Based on GO/PE actuators, a variety of multistimuli-responsive intelligent devices have been developed to demonstrate their application potential in arts, bionics, soft robotics and wearable devices, including interesting WordArt, Chinese paper-cut art pieces, artificial iris, soft crawling robots and a smart cloth unit with adjustable breathability.

Abstract:The miniaturization of mechanical machines is critical for advancing nanotechnology and reducing device footprints. Traditional efforts to downsize gears and micromotors have faced limitations at around 0.1 mm for over thirty years due to the complexities of constructing drives and coupling systems at such scales. Here, we present an alternative approach utilizing optical metasurfaces to locally drive microscopic machines, which can then be fabricated using standard lithography techniques and seamlessly integrated on the chip, achieving sizes down to tens of micrometers with movements precise to the sub-micrometer scale. As a proof of principle, we demonstrate the construction of microscopic gear trains powered by a single driving gear with a metasurface activated by a plane light wave. Additionally, we develop a versatile pinion and rack micromachine capable of transducing rotational motion, performing periodic motion, and controlling microscopic mirrors for light deflection. Our on-chip fabrication process allows for straightforward parallelization and integration. Using light as a widely available and easily controllable energy source, these miniaturized metamachines offer precise control and movement, unlocking new possibilities for micro- and nanoscale systems.

Abstract:The clinical and radiographic records of 23 patients (15 women, eight men) with rapidly destructive hip disease (RDHD) were retrospectively reviewed. Criteria for RDHD included a history of hip pain of 1-6 months duration and the radiographic appearance of a rapidly progressive atrophic form of bone destruction involving both the femoral head and the acetabulum. Radiographs of the remainder of the appendicular skeleton were assessed in 14 patients. The mean patient age was 72 years. The average time from clinical presentation to the appearance of severe hip destruction was 14 months. Five patients demonstrated similar atrophic bone destruction around other articulations. No patients had clinical or laboratory evidence of sepsis or neurologic disease. Although previous reports have suggested that RDHD is degenerative in nature, similar involvement of other articulations suggests that it may represent a focal finding of a more generalized process.

Abstract:Various mechanisms are currently exploited to transduce a wide range of stimulating sources into mechanical motion. At the microscale, simultaneously high amplitude, high work output, and high speed in actuation are hindered by limitations of these actuation mechanisms. Here we demonstrate a set of microactuators fabricated by a simple microfabrication process, showing simultaneously high performance by these metrics, operated on the structural phase transition in vanadium dioxide responding to diverse stimuli of heat, electric current, and light. In both ambient and aqueous conditions, the actuators bend with exceedingly high displacement-to-length ratios up to 1 in the sub-100 μm length scale, work densities over 0.63 J/cm(3), and at frequencies up to 6 kHz. The functionalities of actuation can be further enriched with integrated designs of planar as well as three-dimensional geometries. Combining the superior performance, high durability, diversity in responsive stimuli, versatile working environments, and microscale manufacturability, these actuators offer potential applications in microelectromechanical systems, microfluidics, robotics, drug delivery, and artificial muscles.

Abstract:Micro-gripper is an important tool to manipulate and assemble micro-scale objects. Generally, as micro-gripper is too small to be directly driven by general motors, it always needs special driving devices and suitable structure design. In this paper, two-finger micro-grippers are designed and fabricated, which utilize light-induced deformation smart material to make one of the two fingers. As the smart material is directly driven and controlled by remote lights instead of lines and motors, this light-driven mode simplifies the design of the two-finger micro-gripper and avoids special drivers and complex mechanical structure. In addition, a micro-manipulation experiment system is set up which is based on the light-driven micro-gripper. Experimental results show that this remotely light-driven micro-gripper has ability to manipulate and assemble micro-scale objects both in air and water. Furthermore, two micro-grippers can also work together for cooperation which can further enhance the assembly ability. On the other hand, this kind of remotely controllable micro-gripper that does not require on-board energy storage, can be used in mobile micro-robot as a manipulation hand.

Attachment of Mycoplasma hominis to human cell cultures.

Abstract:Clinical isolates, cell-culture contaminants, and the type strain PG21 of Mycoplasma hominis were examined for attachment to erythrocytes and human cell cultures. Strain 13428 (from blood, postpartum fever) and strain 1184 (cell culture) attached to human and guinea pig erythrocytes, but there were no differences in attachment activities between these strains. However, five M. hominis strains isolated from different tissue sites showed quantitative differences in attachment to human WiDr (intestinal carcinoma cell cultures), MRC-5 (human embryonic lung fibroblasts) and HeLa (carcinoma of cervix) cell cultures. The relative attachment activities were, in descending order: strain 1184 (cell culture), strain 11932 (cervix), strain 13428 (blood, postpartum fever), 13408 (nongonococcal urethritis), and type strain PG21 (multiple passage, originally from human rectum). Trypsin and pronase treatment of M. hominis strain 1184 markedly reduced attachment, suggesting that surface proteins play a role in M. hominis attachment to mammalian cells. In subsequent studies, strain 1620 (septic arthritis) showed the highest attachment activity, whereas strain 1652 (surgical skin flap) and L01888 (cell culture) showed attachment activity similar to cell culture strain 1184. The differing attachment activities of these M. hominis strains isolated from different infected sites of patients with a variety of diseases may be relevant to the virulence of these strains.

Abstract:Nowadays, MEMS, precision machining develops impressively and swiftly and needs high resolution micro-driving system. Micro-driving technology has a bright future. And piezoelectric micro driving is acknowledged as good approach for its advantage like compact structure, high resolution, high frequency response, without noises etc. Thus, a piezoelectric micro driving mechanism with nano-scale resolution was framed and then introduced in this article. A symmetrical flexible hinge was utilized to guide the movement. Micro-displacement performance experiments were carried out in a superior clean laboratory. Experimental data shows that the mechanism has a resolution of 4nm and a response of 10ms. It could be utilized in many fields that require nano-scale actuators. And key factors to high resolution of piezoelectric micro driving were presented on the base of experiments.

Abstract:Micro-scale intelligent actuators capable of sensitive and accurate manipulation under external stimuli hold great promise in various fields including precision sensors and biomedical devices. Current microactuators, however, are often limited to multiple-step fabrication process and multi-materials. Here, a pH-triggered soft microactuator (<100 μm) with simple structure, one-step fabrication process and single material is proposed, which is composed of deformable hydrogel microstructures fabricated by an asymmetric femtosecond Bessel beam. To further explore the swelling-shrinking mechanism, the hydrogel porosity difference between expansion and contraction states is investigated. In addition, by introducing the dynamic holographic processing and splicing processing method, more complex responsive microstructures (S-shaped, C-shaped and tortile chiral structures) are rapidly fabricated, which exhibit tremendous expected deformation characteristics. Finally, as a proof of concept, a pH-responsive microgripper is fabricated for in situ capturing polystyrene (PS) particles and neural stem cells rapidly. This flexible, designable and one-step approach manufacturing of intelligent actuator provides a versatile platform for microobjects manipulation and drug delivery.
Programmable Dual‐Responsive Actuation of Single‐Hydrogel‐Based Bilayer Actuators by Photothermal and Skin Layer Effects with Graphene Oxides

Abstract:The hinge‐based bilayer structures consisting of multi‐stimuli‐responsive hydrogel‐based hinges and a temperature‐responsive hydrogel matrix can undergo self‐folding upon heating and light exposure. The folding angles and kinetics of the bilayer structure are controlled by the geometry of the hinge and different external stimuli, respectively. Furthermore, this single‐hydrogel‐based bilayer structure demonstrates walking and steering locomotion as autonomous actuators and soft robots. Shape morphing of stimuli‐responsive composite hydrogels has received considerable attention in different research fields. Although various multilayer structures with dissimilar materials are studied to achieve shape morphing, combining swellable hydrogel layers with non‐swellable layers results in issues with interface adhesion and structural integrity. In this study, single‐hydrogel‐based bilayer actuators comprising poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) matrices and graphene oxide (GO)–PNIPAM hinges are presented. Upon temperature rising, the PNIPAM hydrogel acts as the passive layer due to the formation of dense microstructures near the surface (i.e., the skin layer effect), whereas the GO‐PNIPAM hydrogel functions as the active layer, maintaining porous due to structural modification by the presence of GO. Under light exposure, the GO‐PNIPAM hinges experience selective heating due to the photothermal effect of GO. Consequently, the resulting bilayer structures exhibit programmable dual‐responsive 3D shape morphing. Additionally, the folding kinetics of these actuators can be adjusted based on the applied stimulus (temperature changes or light), as they are driven by different mechanisms, the skin layer, or photothermal effects, respectively. Furthermore, the hinge‐based bilayer structures demonstrate walking and steering locomotion by light exposure. This approach can lead to advances in soft robotics, biomimetic systems, and autonomous soft actuators in hydrogel‐based systems.

Scratching lithography, manipulation, and soldering of 2D materials using microneedle probes

Abstract:We demonstrate a facile technique to scratch, manipulate, and solder exfoliated flakes of layered 2D materials using a microneedle probe attached to the precision xyz manipulators under an optical microscope. We show that the probe can be used to scratch the flakes into a designated shape with a precision at micrometer scales; move, rotate, roll-up, and exfoliate the flakes to help building various types of heterostructures; and form electric contacts by directly drawing/placing thin metal wires over the flake. All these can be done without lithography and etching steps that often take long processing time and involve harmful chemicals. Moreover, the setup can be easily integrated into any van der Waals assembly systems, such as those in a glove box for handling air/chemical-sensitive materials. The microneedle technique demonstrated in this study, therefore, enables quick fabrications of devices from diverse 2D materials for testing their properties at an early stage of research before conducting more advanced studies and helps to build different types of van der Waals heterostructures.

Abstract:Design and fabrication of photomechanical soft actuators has attracted intense scientific interest because of their potential in the manufacture of untethered intelligent soft robots and advanced functional devices. Trifunctional and monofunctional polymerizable molecular motors are judiciously designed and synthesized. Novel light-driven liquid crystalline networks (LCN) are prepared by crosslinking overcrowded-alkene-based molecular motors with different degrees of freedom into the anisotropic LCN. The photoisomerization and thermal helix inversion of light-driven molecular motors are reversible when only the upper part of the molecular motor is linked to the network, endowing the LCN film with remarkable photoactive performance. However, photochemical geometric change of the light-driven molecular motor does not work after crosslinking both the upper and lower part of the motor by polymer chains. Interestingly, it is found that the fastened motor can transfer the light energy into localized heat instead of performing photoisomerization. The light-driven molecular-motor-based LCN soft actuators are demonstrated to function as a grasping hand, where the continuous motions of grasping, moving, lifting, and releasing an object are successfully achieved. This work may provide inspiration to the preparation of next-generation photoactive advanced functional materials toward their wide applications in the areas of photonics, optoelectronics, soft robotics, and beyond.

Abstract:Recent efforts in stimuli-responsive soft materials have enabled wirelessly controlled actuation with increasing degrees of freedom, yielding miniature robots capable of various locomotion in open environments such as on a plane or inside fluids. However, grand challenges remain in harnessing photomechanical deformation to induce locomotion and control of friction during the movement, especially for robotic actuations within constrained spaces. Here, the authors report a centimeter-long polymer strip made of a liquid crystal network that is capable of versatile light-fueled motions along a human hair. The soft polymer robot can translocate directionally upon temporally modulated excitation and climb vertically through friction control with light. A self-oscillating strip is demonstrated to continuously translocate along the hair upon a constant light stimulus, and its gaiting is associated to the smoothness of the hair surface. The results offer new insights to small-scale photo-actuator, mechanical control, and automation in soft micro robotics.

Abstract:Magnetic microrobots have been developed for navigating microscale environments by means of remote magnetic fields. However, limited propulsion speeds at small scales remain an issue in the maneuverability of these devices as magnetic force and torque are proportional to their magnetic volume. Here, we propose a microrobotic superstructure, which, as analogous to a supramolecular system, consists of two or more microrobotic units that are interconnected and organized through a physical (transient) component (a polymeric frame or a thread). Our superstructures consist of microfabricated magnetic helical micromachines interlocked by a magnetic gelatin nanocomposite containing iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs). While the microhelices enable the motion of the superstructure, the IONPs serve as heating transducers for dissolving the gelatin chassis via magnetic hyperthermia. In a practical demonstration, we showcase the superstructure's motion with a gradient magnetic field in a large channel, the disassembly of the superstructure and release of the helical micromachines by a high-frequency alternating magnetic field, and the corkscrew locomotion of the released helices through a small channel via a rotating magnetic field. This adaptable microrobotic superstructure reacts to different magnetic inputs, which could be used to perform complex delivery procedures within intricate regions of the human body.
