Abstract:Objective: Moxibustion therapy achieves satisfactory therapeutic effects largely depending on the heat stimulation of burning moxa. Understanding the thermal characteristics of heating process is an effective way to reveal the underlying mechanisms of moxibustion therapy. Methods: This paper performs experimental study on temperature distributions of burning moxa sticks and fresh in vitro porcine abdominal tissue using an infrared camera and thermocouples. Meanwhile, a moxibustion model incorporating moxa stick burning model and tissue heat transfer model was established with consideration of radiation propagation and water evaporation. Results: The burning features of moxa sticks were acquired and the radiation energy generated by the burning moxa stick was absorbed and scattered in biological tissue, resulting in a large temperature gradient in the skin layer. And the water evaporation led to a mass loss and reduced skin surface temperature. The numerical model was verified by experimental results and the effects of moxibustion treatment distance and duration can be quantified based on model calculation. Conclusion: The detailed heat transfer process of moxibustion was obtained experimentally and numerically. During moxibustion, the radiation attenuation and water evaporation have a significant influence on the energy transport in biological tissue which cannot be ignored. The treatment distance of 3 cm is the recommended value to achieve the treatment efficacy without thermal damage and pain. Significance: This research would reveal the underlying mechanisms of moxibustion therapy. Besides, the developed models are expected to establish a guideline for moxibustion clinical treatment.

Abstract:In order to study the heat transfer characteristics of biological tissue during moxibustion and explore the underlying thermal mechanisms of moxibustion therapy.The transient temperature distribution and variation in the in-vitro porcine tissue and agar gel during different gentle moxibustion treatments (with and without cleaning ash) were investigated experimentally with an infrared camera and thermocouples.The detailed heat transfer mechanisms in in-vitro porcine tissue and thermal response to moxibustion were analyzed with bio-heat transfer theory.The results indicate that the ash-clean operation is helpful in elevating temperatures in tissue,extending the treatment time under high temperature and enhancing the warm stimulation effect of moxibustion.The radiation from burning moxa sticks has a large attenuation in the porcine skin.The temperature lag exists both in agar gel and porcine tissue during heat transfer and it's feasible to use agar gel as tissue-mimicking phantom in simplified heat transfer experiments.

Abstract:A moxibustion device with the functions of auricular fumigation moxibustion and heat-sensitive moxibustion is designed. The smoke of the ignited moxa stick is used for the fumigation moxibustion at the external auditory canal, while the heat generated works on Dazhui (GV 14) for heat-sensitive moxibustion. The device consists of five parts, i.e. combustion chamber, smoke pipe, smoke processing chamber, power module and connector. It solves the limitations such as unpleasant experience in treatment, unfavorable temperature control, easy scalding and excessive manual dependence induced by usual fumigation moxibustion and during heat-sensitive moxibustion. This moxibustion device may improve the safety and convenience when delivering the treatment with fumigation moxibustion and heat-sensitive moxibustion, as well as the work efficiency of medical staff.

Abstract:Background Knee osteoarthritis is a major cause of pain and functional limitation. Complementary and alternative medical approaches have been employed to relieve symptoms and to avoid the side effects of conventional medication. Moxibustion has been widely used to treat patients with knee osteoarthritis. Our past researches suggested heat-sensitive moxibustion might be superior to the conventional moxibustion. Our objective is to investigate the effectiveness of heat-sensitive moxibustion compared with conventional moxibustion or conventional drug treatment. Methods This study consists of a multi-centre (four centers in China), randomised, controlled trial with three parallel arms (A: heat-sensitive moxibustion; B: conventional moxibustion; C: conventional drug group). The moxibustion locations are different from A and B. Group A selects heat-sensitization acupoint from the region consisting of Yin Lingquan(SP9), Yang Lingquan(GB34), Liang Qiu(ST34), and Xue Hai (SP10). Meanwhile, fixed acupoints are used in group B, that is Xi Yan (EX-LE5) and He Ding (EX-LE2). The conventional drug group treats with intra-articular Sodium Hyaluronate injection. The outcome measures above will be assessed before the treatment, the 30 days of the last moxibustion session and 6 months after the last moxibustion session. Discussion This trial will utilize high quality trial methodologies in accordance with CONSORT guidelines. It will provide evidence for the effectiveness of moxibustion as a treatment for moderate and severe knee osteoarthritis. Moreover, the result will clarify the rules of heat-sensitive moxibustion location to improve the therapeutic effect with suspended moxibustion, and propose a new concept and a new theory of moxibustion to guide clinical practices. Trial Registration The trial is registered at Controlled Clinical Trials: ChiCTR-TRC-00000600.
[Comparative Research of Moxibustion and Infrared Method in Testing Heat-Sensitive State at Xiaguan (ST 7) in Primary Trigeminal Neuralgia].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To explore the possibility of the infrared objective displaying of heat-sensitive state of acupoint.METHODS:Fifty-four qualified subjects were enrolled. In the natural state, thermal tomography (TTM) was adopted to shoot the thermograms on the face. After the thermograms collection, the thermo-sensitive detection with moxibustion was applied. The suspending moxibustion with moxa stick was used at Xiaguan (ST 7, affected side) for 10 mm. The cases with heat extension and transmission at the acupoint were recorded at the end of moxibustion. In following, the second infrared radiation detection was done so as to record the changes in the infrared images on the face before and after moxibustion and compare the difference in the heat-sensitive state at Xiaguan (ST 7, affected side) in the subjects between two detection methods.RESULTS:Before moxibustion, the infrared radiation intensity at Xiaguan (ST 7, affected side) in the patients displayed mostly low temperature feature and its sensibility (true positive rate) was 65.6%, the specificity (true negative rate) was 68.2% and the accuracy was 66.7%. After moxibustion at Xiaguan (ST 7, affected side), there was an obvious block-diffused increment area of infrared radation along the cheek and its sensitivity (true positive rate) was 81.8%, the specificity (true negative rate) was 81.0% and the accuracy was 81.5% as compared with the moxibustion detection.CONCLUSION:(1) The heat-sensitive state at Xiaguan (ST 7, affected side) in the patients of primary trigeminal neuralgia can be objectively displayed by infrared imaging to a certain extent. (2) The acupoint heat-sensitization produced by moxibustion is not only the subjective sensation of the subjects, but also can be objectively displayed by infrared imaging to a certain extent.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the temperature field distribution and variation rules during treatment with mild moxibustion and sparrow-pecking moxibustion of TCM. Methods: Six healthy subjects were selected. Mild moxibustion and sparrow-pecking moxibustion were exerted at Zusanli (ST 36) respectively, for 25 min. Using infrared thermal imaging instrument, the temperature field distribution was measured during moxibustion at Zusanli (ST 36). The simulated thermometer was adopted to measure the temperature field distribution during moxibustion at the imitated cortex. At 20 min of mild moxibustion and sparrow-pecking moxibustion, the temperature field distribution generated by moxibustion was observed at the imitated cortex and Zusanli (ST 36) separately. The temperature values were collected at the sites 0.7, 2.1 and 3.5 cm far from the center of the moxibustion-exerted places successively, and then the characteristics of temperature field distribution and variation rules were compared between different moxibustion methods at the imitated cortex and Zusanli (ST 36). Results: At 20 min of mild moxibustion and sparrow-pecking moxibustion at Zusanli (ST 36), the temperature field distribution focused on the center of moxibustion-exerted site and the temperature was reduced to all directions and illustrated as a curved surface graph, whereas, the temperature field distribution at the imitated cortex was consistent with that at Zusanli (ST 36). With mild moxibustion, the temperature field was distributed uniformly along the longitudinal temperature gradient; whereas, with sparrow-pecking moxibustion, the longitudinal temperature of the temperature field was greatly different, in which, the maximum temperature and the average temperature were higher than those with mild moxibustion respectively and the first time up to the peak value of sparrow-pecking moxibustion was shorter than that with mild moxibustion. The thermal transfer was presented at the non-moxibustion exerted areas during the moxibustion experiment at Zusanli (ST 36). Conclusion: A distance feature is presented in the temperature field measured by simulated thermometer and generated under suspension moxibustion at Zusanli (ST 36). The warm stimulation effect of sparrow-pecking moxibustion is much more obvious at the moxibustion-exerted center as compared with mild moxibustion and the area of warm stimulation generated by sparrow-pecking moxibustion is more concentrated as compared with mild moxibustion. The radiation energy produced by suspension moxibustion is scattered and attenuated in skin tissue, resulting in a certain temperature gradient in the temperature field. The warm stimulation generated at skin surface by moxibustion has a warming-dredging effect.
The thermal performance of biological tissue under moxibustion therapy

Abstract:An understanding of the thermal performance of biological tissue under moxibustion with ash cleaning and distance adjustment (ACDA) is helpful for the optimization and standardization of moxibustion clinical treatment. This study compared surface temperature distribution of burning moxa stick with and without ash cleaning. The experimental of moxibustion treatment on in-vitro tissue and human abdomen were conducted and corresponding numerical models were developed. The effect of ACDA on thermal performance of biological tissue under moxibustion therapy were analyzed. The results show that the surface temperature of burning moxa stick with ash cleaning maintained at a higher range compared to that without ash cleaning. During moxibustion with ACDA process in in-vitro tissue experiment, the temperature increase (ΔT) at skin surface almost fluctuated in the same temperature range, and the ΔT in subcutaneous tissue (>11 mm) kept increasing. Relatively, these ΔT under moxibustion treatment without ACDA showed different trends and these values were all much smaller than those with ACDA. In addition, the position of maximum temperature of tissue under moxibustion with and without ACDA was fixed on treatment acupoint and moved away from treatment acupoint, respectively. Besides, the surface temperature of human abdomen tissue under moxibustion treatment with ACDA can be maintained at 46 °C-50 °C for a longer time compared to that under moxbustion without ACDA. In conclusion, moxibustion with ACDA can create a larger and more durable thermal effect on biological tissue. The results also suggest that ACDA may be helpful to improve moxibustion therapy efficacy in clinic treatments.
An infrared radiation study of the biophysical characteristics of traditional moxibustion

Abstract:Objectives: Moxibustion has been a part of acupuncture practice for thousands of years. Traditionally, it includes direct moxibustion, in which moxa sticks are burned at acupuncture points on the skin, and indirect moxibustion, in which monkshood cakes or ginger or garlic slices are used to insulate the skin from burning moxa cones. Recently randomised clinical trials and clinical observations suggest that moxibustion can enhance physiological and immune functions, but there has been little investigation of the scientific basis of these traditional techniques. The present study compared the infrared radiation caused by these techniques to that of non-specific controls and to that of the human body surface at an acupuncture point. Methods: A highly sensitive, infrared-spectrum detection device was used to compare the spectra of traditional moxibustion materials (n = 4/group) with those of control materials (n = 4/group) and to the spectrum at the surface of an acupuncture point LI 4 (Hegu) in healthy volunteers (n = 7). Results: The infrared radiation intensity produced by a traditional moxa stick was 43300.41 mV, with a peak on the infrared spectrum of 3.5 microm, while the respective radiation intensities of two controls, a smokeless moxa stick and a 555 cigarette, were 31.15 mV and 37.03 mV with peaks of 7 microm and 3.5 microm. The infrared radiation intensities of the three traditional media of indirect moxibustion, monkshood cake, ginger slices and garlic slices, were 520.27 mV, 594.79 mV and 681.87 mV, respectively, all with peaks around 7.5 microm and similar spectra. In contrast, the infrared radiation intensities of slices of cucumber and carrot, used as control media for indirect moxibustion, were 274.47 mV and 50.53 mV, respectively, substantially different from those of the traditional media. Infrared radiation at LI 4 (Hegu) was 20.40 mV, and peaked on the infrared spectrum at about 7.5 microm. The experiment showed that the thermal action of the traditional moxa stick was more potent than that of indirect moxibustion and its radiation peak was different from that at the acupuncture point on the human body. In contrast, the thermal action of traditional indirect moxibustion was modest and its radiation peak matched that at the acupuncture point. Conclusion: Direct moxibustion with a traditional moxa stick may produce its potent therapeutic effects by thermal action, while traditional indirect moxibustion may act by producing modest thermal action and a sympathetic vibration at the skin surface. Non-traditional thermal materials and media may not be suitable substitutes for traditional materials. The data provide a scientific, biophysical rationale for traditional moxibustion.
The Effect Of Ash Cleaning Cycles On Thermal Characteristics Of Moxibustion Therapy

Abstract:Objective: In clinical treatment, ash cleaning is an effective way to enhance the thermal efficiency of moxibustion. Understanding the thermal characteristics of moxibustion therapy with ash cleaning is necessary to improve its clinical efficiency. Method: Temperature distributions of burning moxa sticks were measured with an infrared camera. The moxa burning duration was set at 20min with different ash cleaning cycles (3min, 4min, 5min and no ash cleaning). A moxa stick burning model with ash cleaning was built to analyze the detailed burning discipline and compared with experimental results. In addition, temperature distributions of in-vitro tissue during moxibustion with different ash cleaning cycles were obtained using thermocouples and infrared camera. Results: Ash cleaning has effectively extended the high-temperature areas of moxa sticks and accelerated the burning velocity. Shorter ash cleaning cycle led to higher average temperature of moxa sticks. The simulated results agreed well with experimental data, which indicates that the moxa stick burning model with ash cleaning is reliable to reveal the burning discipline of moxa sticks. For in-vitro tissue, ash cleaning induced obvious temperature rise at tissue surface and slight rise in deep tissue. Compared with 3 min and 5 min, the ash cleaning cycle of 4 min is the recommended value.

Abstract:Moxibustion has a history of thousands of years. Umbilical moxibustion achieves prevention and treatment of diseases through moxibustion at the golden section of the human body-the umbilicus. It has enough clinical practice experience. Traditional treatment methods have problems such as irritating smoke, uncontrollable temperature, experience-based, and difficult to quantify. Based on the principle of traditional umbilical moxibustion, a structural design of an electronic smokeless umbilical moxibustion instrument is proposed, which belongs to indirect moxibustion and has the advantages of smokeless, electric heating, portability, temperature monitoring and controllability. The internal heat transfer process of the moxibustion instrument is mainly heat convection and heat radiation. Based on ANSYS software, the internal temperature field of the moxibustion instrument is analyzed, and the steady-state temperature distribution and the temperature change characteristic curve of different positions with time are obtained to verify the rationality of the structural design. At the same time, lay a research foundation for the measurable and quantifiable effects of moxibustion on umbilical therapy.
Experimental observation of effects of acupoints, cone numbers and durations of moxibustion with different moxibustion methods on skin surface and inside temperature

Abstract:ObjectiveTo observe the effects of acupoints, cone numbers and durations of moxibustion with different moxibustion methods on skin surface and inside temperature, and to provide references for the clinical standardization of moxibustion amount.MethodsThe 42 big-ear white rabbits were divided into 6 groups according to the random number table method, a 1-cone direct moxibustion group, a 2-cone direct moxibustion group, a 3-cone direct moxibustion group, a 1-cone herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group, a 2-cone herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group, and a 3-cone herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group, with 7 rabbits in each group. Shenque (CV 8), Shenshu (BL 23) and Zusanli (ST 36) were used in each group, but the moxibustion methods, cone numbers and durations of moxibustion were different. Rabbits in each group received moxibustion once every other day for 5 times in total. During the intervention, a thermoelectricity coupled probe and a temperature recorder were used to record the real-time acupoint skin temperature and the temperature at different time points, so as to observe, analyze and process the real-time changes in the temperature difference between the surface and inside of acupoint skin.ResultsFor herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion, the best temperature for cone changing was (46.38±0.51) °C when the highest surface temperature was (49.20±0.52) °C; the multi-factor comparison of acupoint × cone number × time and acupoint × moxibustion method × time showed that time × acupoint, time × moxibustion method and cone number × acupoint had interactive effects (all P<0.05). Comparing skin temperature differences between different cone numbers at the same acupoint, Shenque (CV 8) on the 1st and the 5th days, Shenshu (BL 23) on the 3rd and the 7th days, Zusanli (ST 36) on the 1st and the 9th days of experiment showed statistically significant differences (all P<0.05). The skin temperature comparison of different moxibustion methods at the same acupoint all had statistical differences (all P<0.05), except for Shenque (CV 8) before moxibustion, Shenshu (BL 23) before moxibustion and on the 5th day; Zusanli (ST 36) only showed statistical differences on the 5th and 7th days (both P<0.05). The skin temperature differences of different acupoints after moxibustion in the 1-cone, 2-cone and 3-cone groups were statistically different (all P<0.05); direct moxibustion and herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion at different acupoints were all statistically different (all P<0.05).ConclusionCone changing temperature under the same specifications of herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion was confirmed. Temperature difference between surface and inside of different acupoint skin at the same maximum temperature was significantly different due to the cone numbers and moxibustion methods, which showed the highest at Shenshu (BL 23), the second at Shenque (CV 8), and the lowest at Zusanli (ST 36). The influence of acupoint factor should be considered to determine the quantitative indicators of moxibustion.

Abstract:Moxibustion and laser irradiation are perceived to achieve satisfactory therapeutic effects by inducing photo thermal effects on biological tissue. Understanding the photon transport and heat transfer process is an effective way to reveal their underlying mechanism. The temperature distribution of in-vitro tissue under gentle moxibustion and 808 nm laser irradiation were measured experimentally. Photon transport was simulated by Monte Carlo models. Heat transfer models on in-vitro tissue with convolved Monte Carlo results as heat sources were developed. During moxibustion, photons emitted from burning moxa stick with long-wavelength deposited in skin layer, which induced a maximum temperature on tissue surface. While for 808 nm laser irradiation, most photons penetrated through skin, which resulted in the highest temperature in fat tissue. Laser irradiation with big beam radius could induce a wide and relatively uniform thermal effect. During moxibustion and laser irradiation, the wavelength and beam radius have a significant influence on photons distribution as well as temperature profile in biological tissue. Laser irradiation with suitable parameters can be proposed as a substitution of moxibustion in terms of photothermal effect. This work would provide valuable guidance for understanding the photothermal mechanism of moxibustion and laser irradiation in the combined view of photon transport and heat transfer.

[On the Considerations About Heating Materials and Temperature of Moxibustion in Clinical Practice]

Abstract:Moxibustion, one of the traditional Chinese medicine therapy, plays an important role in the treatment of a variety of clinical conditions, particularly the chronic and deficiency problems. In the present paper, the author reviewed the history of development of moxibustion therapy, and the related materials and heating temperature in ancient China, and also reviewed the history of heating therapy (similar to moxibustion) appearing in ancient Egypt, Greek, Libya, India, Europe, etc. The author thinks that the efficacy of moxibustion intervention mainly depends on the heating temperature and the heated area of the skin (not the heating materials) according to his own research group's experimental outcomes. Some problems of moxibustion should be noted, for example, the ignited moxa-smoke induced environmental contamination which may lead to chronic injury particularly to the health of the related practitioners. The author forecasts that some succedaneous materials of mugwort as physical heating energy (mechanical, electrical, microelectronic, solar energy), chemical, biological and medical heating reagents (acupoint receptor-activator), etc., high technique medical devices are probably developed in the future, minimizing some defects of moxa and expanding clinical application of moxibustion therapy.
The Mechanism of Moxibustion: Ancient Theory and Modern Research

Abstract:The moxibustion has a dual effect of tonification and purgation in TCM theories, which are based on two aspects: the actions of the meridian system and the roles of moxa and fire. Modern research works of the moxibustion mechanism mainly relate to the thermal effects, radiation effects, and pharmacological actions of moxa and its combustion products. Experimental results showed that moxibustion thermal stimulation affects both shallow and deep tissues of the skin, and the warm-heat effects of moxibustion have a close relation to the warm receptors or/and the polymodal receptor. The burning moxa radiation spectrum ranges from 0.8 to 5.6 μ m; peak is nearby 1.5 μ m, lying within the near infrared portion. There is an amazing consistency in the infrared spectrums of three types of indirect moxibustion and the unified spectrum of acupoints; all have their peaks of radiation near 10 μ m. Lots of ingredients had been identified from mugwort leaves and moxa smoke, which have a variety of biological activities; they were considered to participate in the comprehensive effects of moxibustion. Although lots of research works have been carried out and made some progress, there is still a great distance from fully understanding the mechanism of moxibustion.

Experimental research on combustion of modification Yangquan coal

Abstract:The combustibility of modified coal powder was tested by self-made combustion device and thermal analysis device, and then compared to original samples. With the help of self-made combustion device, the combustion ratio can be measured. With the help of thermal analysis device, the combustibility of coal powder at different temperatures can be precisely and thoroughly studied. Through the comparision of modified and original coal powder, it can be concluded that the coal powder combustion achieved improvement. When the modified-power is 264 watts, the best modified-time of Yangquan anthracite is 40 seconds. The combustion ratio of the best modified coal powder increases by 10.4%. In order to thoroughly study the combustibility of coal powder, the reactivity of coal powder with CO2 was analyzed by thermal analysis device. The results indicated that the reactivity between modified Yangquan anthracite powder and CO2 between 450° and 650° was slightly worse than original coal powder, while same or nearly same at other temperatures. In order to study the mechanism of modification on coal powder, morphology and chemical compositions of coal powder before and after modification were studied by utilizing scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The photos took by SEM showed that the air holes on the surface of coal particles increased as the extension of time. But when time exceeded some ranges, the air holes morphology seemed to be destroyed. The combustion ratio reached the peak when air holes morphology was at the best condition. The results of X-ray diffraction indicated that the chemical composition of coal powder barely changed with the modification of low power and short time. It can be concluded that microwave modification has no effect on the chemical composition of coal powder. © 2011 IEEE.
[Design and development of a multifunctional moxibustion treatment machine based on heat-sensitive moxibustion therapy]

Abstract:A multifunctional moxibustion treatment machine is designed and developed to assist the heat-sensitive moxibustion therapy. Through the motion control of the stepping motor by programmable logic controller (PLC), the automatic control is obtained for the acupoint detection of heat-sensitive moxibustion therapy and the manual operation of moxibustion. The skin temperature is monitored in real-time, using infrared non-contact temperature measurement technology. Based on the deviation of the temperature set value and the monitoring one, the distance between the moxibustion device and the exerted region is adjusted automatically by PLC so that the temperature is controlled practically. The multifunctional moxibustion treatment machine based on the heat-sensitive moxibustion therapy is capable of the operation control of mild moxibustion, circling moxibustion, sparrow-pecking moxibustion and along-meridian moxibustion techniques, as well as real-time monitoring of skin temperature. The temperature change curve of this machine is coincident with that obtained by the manual operation of heat-sensitive moxibustion. This multifunctional moxibustion treatment machine assists the delivery of heat-sensitive moxibustion therapy and it is satisfactory in temperature control and precise in operation.
Experimental Study on Temperature Variation in a Porous Inert Media Burner for Premixed Methane Air Combustion

Abstract:The detailed axial temperature variations of the porous media burner during startup and switch-off processes were experimentally measured and analyzed for the premixed methane air combustion. A tubular burner filled by alumina pellets with diameters of 10 mm and 43 mm, respectively, was used as the porous media burner to study the effect of the burner inlet gas flow rate, equivalence ratio, and diameter of alumina pellets on the combustion temperature distribution along the burner axis and the combustion wave velocity. The results showed that the superadiabatic combustion could be achieved for the combustion wave velocity greater than zero, and the critical equivalence ratio corresponding to the superadiabatic combustion was bigger for the smaller pellet diameter or higher inlet air flow rate. This study can provide the useful information for the design and operation of the porous media burner, and is significant to understand the combustion phenomena in the porous media burner. Abstract:Moxibustion therapy has a long history with remarkable effect,but its effect mechanism is still unkown.Now,the researches are mainly focused on infrared physical characteristic of moxibustion.This article summarized the researches of infrared physical characteristic of moxibustion in terms of the infrared radiation spectrum of direct moxibustion,indirect moxibustion and that of meridians and acupoints.It is the most important way to research moxibustion and improve its curative effect to explore the material base of moxibustion effect mechanism and the biological effect after moxibustion on acupoints by interdisciplinary and modern technology.It makes moxibustion towards a scientific modern way.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the quality of the temperature-time curve of indirect moxibustion and explore its clinical significance.Methods A curve of temperature change was recorded when clinically commonly used Aconite cake-separated or ginger-separated moxibustion was performed.The curve was compared with that recorded when clinically seldom used Scutellariae cake-separated moxibustion was performed.Results The maximum value of temperature was significantly higher during Scutellariae cake-separated moxibustion than during Aconite cake-separated moxibustion and during ginger-separated moxibustion.There was also a larger difference in temperature-time curve.The maximum value of temperature was basically the same during Aconite cake-separated moxibustion as during ginger-separated moxibustion,but the rising segment of temperature was steeper than during ginger-separated moxibustion.Conclusion Although the maximum temperature values of Aconite cake-separated moxibustion and ginger-separated moxibustion are basically the same,patients feel a pain more easily during ginger-separated moxibustion.Scutellariae cake-separated moxibustion is not suitable for clinical application from its quality of temperature-time curve.
