Abstract:Porous three-dimensional electrochromic films composed of orthorhombic WO3 center dot H2O, hexagonal WO3, and rutile TiO2 array (h-WO3/o-WO3 center dot H2O/r-TiO2, WWT) were controllably synthesized by a facile two-step hydrothermal technique. Due to the hydrophilicity and array structure of TiO2, the generation of high-quality o-WO3 center dot H2O was significantly promoted, which can reduce the energy barrier to ion diffusion and increase the ion flux by introducing structural water in the interlayer region of WO3. The formation of porous 3-dimensional structure and WO3-TiO2 heterojunction increases the effective contact area, alters the distribution of energy bands, and promotes charge transport, resulting in significantly improved electrochromic properties. An impressive dual -band electrochromic performance with high optical modulation of 68.4% at 633 nm and 59.8% at 1600 nm was achieved in WWT film, respectively, with a fast switching speed (11s/3.3 s at 633 nm and 3 s/9.4 s at 1600 nm for coloring/bleaching), high coloration efficiency (46 cm2 C-1 at 633 nm and 136.8 cm2 C-1 at 1600 nm), and a satisfactory cycling stability at the same time.

Abstract:Electrochromic smart devices with controllable optical property are the most promising alternative to traditional windows and curtains. State of the art preparation and commercialization of large-scale electrochromic films are mainly based on vapor phase deposition, but massive application is limited by high price (due to complex preparation process). Here, an all-solution technology is developed for large-area low-cost preparation of electrochromic films. A WO3/ITO dispersion was successfully developed; high electrical conductivity ITO nanoparticle networks along with ITO coating on glass can serve as extended 3-dimensional electrode, which can form microelectrical field and act as the pathways for electron diffusion to WO3 nanorods. In fact, experiment results show that the surface resistance of WO3/ITO nanocomposite film decreased to 32% of the pure WO3. In other words, the optimum WO3/ITO nanocomposite films in this study with "distributed conductive structure" and submicrometer-sized voids morphology have improved the electrochromic properties remarkably. Our optimized WO3/ITO films exhibit higher optical modulation than pristine WO3 (Delta T = 81.7% vs 62.5% at 630 nm) and a faster switching speed (t(b) = 6 s vs 22 s).

Abstract:Electrochromic WO3 films with size controlled nanorods were successfully fabricated by a wet chemistry method. The structure and electrochromic properties of tungsten oxide nanorods and films were studied by High resolution transmission electron microscope, Scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods. The average length and diameter of the monodispersed tungsten oxide nanorods increase from 38 x 3.2 nm to 89 x 4.5 nm with help from surfactants. The results show that the electrochromic response time of WO3 nanorod films are strongly dependent on the size of the nanorods. By simply changing the size of the nanorods, the response time of the nanorod films can be regulated nearly by about five times. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy study showed that such trend can be attributed to the size effect of WO3 nanorods upon the dynamics of H ions diffusion. At the same time, all the nanorod films showed good electrochemical stability as there were no significant performance declines after 1000 cycles. The electrochromic modulations of transmittance at 633 nm were around 22%-49%. The above stated results demonstrate that, by controlling the size of WO3 nanorods, the electrochromic properties can be easily adjusted, especially the response time, indicating potential values for different response time required at different occasions. Abstract:Self-organized macroporous tungsten trioxide (WO3) films are obtained by anodic oxidation of DC-sputtered tungsten (W) layers on 10mm×25mm indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass. Under optimized experimental conditions, uniformly macroporous WO3 films with a thickness of ca. 350nm are formed. The film shows a connected network with average pore size of 100nm and a pore wall thickness of approximately 30nm. The anodized film becomes transparent after annealing without significant change in macroporous structure. In 0.1M H2SO4, the macroporous WO3 films show enhanced electrochromic properties with a coloration efficiency of 58cm2C−1. Large modulation of transmittance (∼50% at 632.8nm) and a switching speed of about 8s are also achieved with this macroporous film.

Abstract:Electrochromic materials exhibit promising applications in energy-saving fields for their ability to control heat from outdoors. Nanostructured W18O49 has drawn attention for its one-dimensional structure to transfer charge efficiently as a remarkable electrochromic material. W18O49 bi-layer films were fabricated through a facile one-step solvothermal process with citric acid as a chelating agent. The addition of citric acid improved the deposition on the substance, and a nanostructured film with a denser layer at the bottom and a tussock-like upper layer was obtained. The bi-layer film exhibited an enhanced optical modulation of 68.7%, a coloration efficiency of 82.1 cm(2)/C with stability over 400 cycles, and fast response times (1.4 s and 2.3 s for bleaching and coloring), with expectation to be applied in the electrochromic field. Abstract:Amorphous and crystalline electrochromic WO3 films exhibit quite different optical properties during coloration process. In the present work, amorphous and crystalline electrochromic WO3 films prepared by a solution method were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope techniques. A double-layer model with sharp interfaces was established for the fitting of the ellipsometry parameters. The results show that the proton favors amorphous films more than crystalline WO3 films. The refractive indices of both amorphous and polycrystalline WO3 films decrease while extinction coefficients increase with the inserting of H+ during the coloration process. But the optical parameters of the latter are much more sensitive to the H+ ions injected compared to the amorphous WO3 during the coloration process. That is the refractive index modulation of the crystalline WO3 films is about 53% at 633 nm while that of the amorphous films about 15% at the same wavelength. The Drude-like free electron model for crystalline WO3 and hopping mechanism of small polaron for amorphous WO3 are used to explain the difference in detail. These results are very helpful for the better understanding of the coloration process and for the design of electrochromic devices. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The electrochromic films featuring the well dispersed ITO nanocrystal (about 10 nm) in amorphous WO3 (ITO@WO3) have been successfully fabricated with a solution process. The structure and electrochromic properties of the as-prepared films were studied by high resolution transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods. The measured coloration/bleach time decreases from 10.5/27.8 s to 5.7/0.9 s with the increasing of ITO/AMT ratio indicating that embedded ITO nanocrystals induce the nanocrystal/glassy interface effect remarkably improving the ion diffusion coefficient and electrochemical activity. The optimal Delta T at 633 nm of 0.1 ITO@WO3 films is about 53.80% much higher than that of pure WO3 (about 42.09%). But in near-infrared (NIR) range the pure WO3 films show the best transmittance modulation rather than the composite films. The above stated results are indicative that the interface effects of embedded ITO nanocrystals play the key role while its plasmon-induced electrochromic effects are limited because of not only excellent NIR modulation capability of amorphous WO3 itself but also the relative large size of ITO nanocrystals used, demonstrating that smaller nanocrystal size (similar to 5 nm) are required for better electrochromic performance of the composite films. Abstract:We report on a layer-controlled fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) WO3 ordered nanoporous films via a step-by-step template-assisted strategy. For this purpose, a polystyrene sphere monolayer colloidal crystal (MCC), capable of intact transfer, is adopted as the fabrication template. WO3 nanoporous films with a monolayer (L1), bilayer (L2) and trilayer (L3) were typically constructed and technical analysis illustrates that each layer is composed of fully crystalline monoclinic WO3 nanoparticles and aggregated skeletons possessing hexagonally ordered arrangements at long range. Electrochromic characterization reveals that the ITO-based WO3 nanoporous films have long cycling stability over time and improved cation insertion/extraction capacities with increasing film layer. The inserted/extracted cations of the L2 film are nearly twice that of L1, while slightly inferior to that of L3. For the L3 film, the excessive layer thickness results in longer cation diffusion path lengths, leading to relatively poor charge reversibility. Therefore, the WO3 nanoporous bilayer films prepared in our work show optimum electrochromic properties after comprehensive characterization. Additionally, the uniform nanoporous film prepared by the proposed strategy can be successfully constructed onto a curved ceramic substrate with rough surfaces, which is still a challenge for traditional spin-or dip-coating methods. This substrate-compatible feature will facilitate construction of specific functional devices and layer-controlled fabrication by a low-cost strategy could find promising applications in chemical sensors, electrochromic windows, and so on.

Abstract:WO3 thin films fabricated by glancing angle deposition (GLAD) are proposed as excellent electrochromic coatings with favorable ion diffusion. A similar to 500-nm film prepared by GLAD had a relatively large transmittance modulation. The crystallization structure, surface morphology, chemical state, optical and electrochromic properties of WO3 thin films were systematically characterized upon annealing treatment. Compared with annealed WO3 porous nanostructured films, the amorphous as-deposited films exhibited a high coloration efficiency and stable reversibility. Furthermore, the GLAD WO3 films exhibit the tunable angular selectivity under illumination with p-polarized light because of the birefringence, which could extend the application range of nanostructured films in the electrochromic field. Abstract:Innovative WO3·2H2O/PEDOT films with strong adhesion of the electrochromic layer and the substrate were fabricated. A WO3·2H2O/PEDOT electrochromic layer can be firmly fixed to an ethylene vinyl acetate/polyethylene terephthalate (EVA/PET) electrode using Ag as the conductive layer by a transient heating method. The electrochromic film is mechanically robust and can be twisted, folded and crumpled without performance degeneration. Improved performance has been realized by WO3·2H2O/PEDOT films compared with WO3·2H2O films due to the excellent electrical conductivity of PEDOT, including a higher of Li-ion diffusion coefficient (1.1×10−9cm2s−1), faster response time (2.6s for bleaching time and 4.4s for coloration time), higher color efficiency (180.2cm2C−1) and larger transmittance modulation (63.1%) at 956nm. The results are very promising for the next generation of deformable or implantable hidden message displays and wearable smart clothes applications.
Transmittance Correlated Real-Time Resistivity Modulation and Insulator-Metal Transition of Electrochromic WO3 Thin Films

Abstract:A quantitative relationship between optical and electrical properties of crystalline WO3 films during Li+ insertion has been established in this work. Detailly, the exponential relationship between transmittance and resistivity of crystalline WO3 thin films in visible and near-infrared wavebands is determined, and the real-time characterization of the resistivity of WO3 thin films during electrochromic process is realized. The experimental results show the resistivity of WO3 film can be regulated in the range of 0.078-0.98 Omega m with rapid response (similar to 6 s) when applied +/- 1 V voltage for 30 s. By analyzing the fitted resistivity-transmittance curve of WO3 thin film, a high-efficiency optical modulation of WO3 film in near-infrared 1000 nm can be achieved. Combining the IMT phenomenon during Li+ insertion, when x of LixWO(3) changes from 0.08 to 0.13, the WO3 film is in a transition state from the insulating state to the metallic state with the tetragonal crystalline phase. The symmetry structural evolution of crystalline WO3 thin films during the Li+ insertion is further demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These results contribute to the development of WO3 based optoelectronic bifunctional electrochromic devices.
Enhanced electrochromic and mechanical properties of WO 3 film by substrate effect

Abstract:In the present study, the electrochromic and mechanical properties of sputtered tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) films deposited on substrates with different surface roughness were systematically investigated. The experimental results demonstrate that tungsten oxide films, which were deposited on fluorine-doped tin oxide with a surface roughness of 21.4 nm, exhibited superior electrochromic properties. The film's optical contrast reached 77.1% not only at 700 nm. Further, the colouring and bleaching speeds were 5.7 s and 5.9 s, respectively, while the coloration efficiency reached 157.9 cm 2 C −1 . In addition, the peak current density of F Ra21 was reduced by only about 5.6% from 4.23 mA/cm2 to 3.99 mA/cm2 after about 4000 cycles, and the coloured state transmittance reduced by only 28% without power supply during a 3600 s duration. The mechanical test results show that the elastic modulus was 79.7 ± 3.82 GPa, which was lower than the others. The finite element method was applied to explore the generation and propagation of lumps and cracks observed in SEM, and the film was found to have a greater ability to resist deformation. The present study can provide a reference for improvement of electrochromic properties especially for flexible electrochromic devices.

Preparation of WO 3 Films with Controllable Crystallinity for Improved Near-Infrared Electrochromic Performances

Abstract:In this study, a WO3 film with controllable crystallinity has been prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The WO3 film with about 400 nm thickness and controllable crystallinity not only has the advantages of amorphous WO3 with large transmittance modulation and short switching response time but also has the outstanding cyclic stability of crystalline WO3. Therefore, this WO3 film exhibits superior electrochromic performances including large transmittance modulation in the near infrared regime (72.5% at λ = 1000 nm), short coloration/bleaching switching response time (5.3 s for coloration and 3.0 s for bleaching), high coloration efficiency at λ = 1000 nm (80.5 cm2 C–1), and excellent cycle stability. Abstract:In this study, we demonstrate the enhancement of the electrochromic performance of tungsten oxide (WO3) by crystal network topology modification. This is achieved by constructing various crystalline morphologies and patterns of the films. Different mesoscopic crystalline networks of WO3 were acquired on transparent conducting fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) by a crystal-seed-assisted hydrothermal process. The modification of the crystal network topology and crystal growth habit of WO3 films was achieved by adding different concentrations of oxalic acid and HCl, and controlling the growth time. The influence of the topological patterns on the corresponding electrochromic performance of WO3 films was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and in situ reflectance spectroscopy. It follows that four different topological patterns of WO3 microstructures, namely random "rocks" of the seed layers, micro-urchin, small peony, and blooming peony were obtained by adding different concentrations of oxalic acid and hydrochloric acid. It is found that pH and oxalic acid are both the key modifying factors of the habit and topology of the crystal networks. Consequently, the urchin-like pattern gives rise to a high efficiency in optical modulation and coloration due to its similarity to micro-sized antennas, which may facilitate the emission and absorption of charged particles and electrochemical reactions at the WO3 surfaces.

Amorphous/ordered porous crystalline stacked WO3 films fabricated by electrodeposition-assisted sol–gel and its application to electrochromic devices

Abstract:WO3 is currently the most widely used and promising electrochromic material, but the preparation of WO3 thin films with excellent optoelectronic properties is a formidable challenge. The amorphous WO3/ordered porous crystalline WO3 stacked films (a-WO3/OP-c-WO3) were prepared by electrodeposition-assisted sol–gel method with polystyrene (PS) spheres as the templates. The microstructure and properties of a-WO3/OP-c-WO3 films were significantly influenced by electrodeposition time (150 s ∼ 300 s). The optimized a-WO3/OP-c-WO3 films exhibited even better electrochromic properties (at 633 nm) with high cycling stability, superior optical modulation (53.9 %), fast response time (3.9 s/6.1 s for bleaching /coloration), and especially high coloration efficiency (51.3 cm2/C), compared with OP-c-WO3 film (25.1 cm2/C) and a-WO3 film (35.2 cm2/C), which is unique synergistic effect between the top layer of a-WO3 and the bottom layer of OP-c-WO3 film. The ordered porous structure allows the film to fully contact with the electrolyte, thereby providing a greater specific surface area and more active sites for the electrochemical reaction. Preparation of WO3 Films with Controllable Crystallinity for Improved Near-Infrared Electrochromic Performances

Abstract:In this study, a WO3 film with controllable crystallinity has been prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The WO3 film with about 400 nm thickness and controllable crystallinity not only has the advantages of amorphous WO3 with large transmittance modulation and short switching response time but also has the outstanding cyclic stability of crystalline WO3. Therefore, this WO3 film exhibits superior electrochromic performances including large transmittance modulation in the near infrared regime (72.5% at lambda = 1000 nm), short coloration/bleaching switching response time (5.3 s for coloration and 3.0 s for bleaching), high coloration efficiency at lambda = 1000 nm (80.5 cm(2) C-1), and excellent cycle stability. The strategy of preparing a WO3 film with controllable crystallinity by a simple magnetron sputtering method presents an innovative direction to obtain high-performance WO3 electrochromic materials applied in the fields of smart windows, spacecraft thermal control, and infrared camouflage.

Abstract:Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-modified silicon dioxide (SiO2)-doped crystalline tungsten trioxide (WO3) films for use as electrochromic layers were prepared on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass by the sol–gel spin coating technique. The effects of the PEO template and SiO2 on the electrochromic transmittance modulation ability of crystalline WO3 films were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra analysis indicated that PEO was decomposed after annealing at 500 °C for 3 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern analysis showed that both SiO2 and PEO helped reduce the crystalline grain size of the WO3 films. Atomic force microscope (AFM) images showed that the combined action of SiO2 and PEO was helpful for achieving high surface roughness and a macroporous structure. An electrochromic test indicated that PEO-modified SiO2-doped crystalline WO3 films intercalated more charges (0.0165 C/cm2) than pure WO3 crystalline films (0.0095 C/cm2). The above effects resulted in a good transmittance modulation ability (63.2% at 628 nm) of PEO-modified SiO2-doped crystalline WO3 films, which was higher than that of pure WO3 crystalline films (9.4% at 628 nm).

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3) electrochromic devices are obtaining increasing interest due to their color change and thermal regulation. However, most previous work focuses on the absorption or transmission spectra of materials, rather than the optical parameters evolution in full spectrum in the electrochromic processes. Herein, we developed a systematic protocol of ex situ methods to clarify the evolutions of subtle structure changes, Raman vibration modes, and optical parameters of WO3 thin films in electrochromic processes as stimulated by dosage-dependent Li+ insertion. We obtained the below information by ex situ spectroscopic ellipsometry. (1) Layer-by-layer Li+ embedding mechanism demonstrated by individual film thickness analysis. (2) The details of its optical leap in the Brillouin zone in the full spectral. (3) The optical constants varied with the Li+ insertion in the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared bands, demonstrating the potential for applications in chip fabrication, deep-sea exploration, and optical measurements. (4) Simulated angular modulation laws of WO3 films for full spectra in different Li+ insertion states. This ex situ method to study the optical properties of electrochromic devices are important for monitoring phase transition kinetics, the analysis of optical leaps, and the study of ion diffusion mechanisms and the stoichiometry-dependent changes in optical constants over the full spectral. This work shows that electrochromic films in Li+ surface permeation can be applied in the field of zoom lenses, optical phase modulators, and other precision optical components. Our work provides a new solution for the development of zoom lenses and a new application scenario for the application of electrochromic devices.
