Abstract:As the world's factory, China has enjoyed huge economic benefits from international export but also suffered severe environmental consequences. Most studies investigating unequal environmental exchange associated with trade took China as a homogeneous entity ignoring considerable inequality and outsourcing of pollution within China. This paper traces the regional mismatch of export-induced economic benefits and environmental costs along national supply chains by using the latest multiregional input-output model and emission inventory for 2012. The results indicate that approximately 56% of the national GDP induced by exports has been received by developed coastal regions, while about 72% of air pollution embodied in national exports, measured as aggregated atmospheric pollutant equivalents (APE), has been mainly incurred by less developed central and western regions. For each yuan of export-induced GDP, developed regions only incurred 0.4-0.6 g APE emissions, whereas less developed regions from western or central China had to suffer 4-8 times the amount of emissions. This is due to poorer regions providing lower value added and higher emission-intensive inputs and having lower environmental standards and less efficient technologies. Our results may pave a way to mitigate the unequal relationship between developed and less developed regions from the perspective of environment-economy nexus.
Climate Change Exposure and Stock Liquidity Commonality: International Evidence

Abstract:Using a large international sample from 40 countries spanning the period of 2002 to 2022, this paper provides evidence of a significant and positive relationship between firm-level climate change exposure and stock liquidity commonality. We identify two channels through which this impact occurs: the financial constraints channel and the operational risk channel. Additionally, this paper reveals that the positive effect of climate change exposure on stock liquidity commonality is stronger for firms with higher levels of information asymmetry or weaker corporate governance. Furthermore, this study finds that country-level climate risk also contributes to higher stock liquidity commonality and that country-level climate risk and firm-level climate change exposure risk act as substitutes in increasing stock liquidity commonality. After addressing endogeneity concerns and conducting various robustness checks, our main findings remain unchanged.

Abstract:This study provides evidence that trade expansion has contributed to the degradation of air pollution in China. On the basis of different responses of counties’ trade to China's World Trade Organization accession at the end of 2001, we exploit air pollution data from NASA to construct a difference‐in‐differences predicted trade as an instrument for our identification. We document statistically significant and robust evidence on trade expansion, which accounts for approximately 60% and 20% for the increase of PM and SO, respectively, in China. Findings on trade pollution relation are robust to various tests. Deterioration in the environment is mainly driven by scale and trade in polluting sectors.
Do Export Demand Shocks Affect the Export Quality of Multi‐product Firms? Evidence from China

Abstract:We extend the theoretical model of Antoniades (2015, Heterogeneous Firms, quality, and trade. Journal of International Economics, 95(2), 263-273) to analyze the impact of export demand shocks on the quality of multi-product firms. Using Chinese micro-data, we find that positive export demand shocks significantly promote the export quality of multi-product firms, but the impact decreases as firm productivity increases. In addition to the scale effect and the competition effect, the intensified competition caused by the expansion of export demand will induce firms to skew their export sales towards the best performing products. Our findings elucidate the importance of the resource reallocation effect in the study of trade-induced export performance.

Abstract:Constrained by data availability and challenges in causality identification, the relationship between trade and the environment remains theoretically ambiguous. This paper constructs a novel Chinese manufacturing firms' CO 2 emission intensity dataset by converting different types of firms' energy consumption. Using disaggregated transaction data and the Shift-Share design, this paper exploits the effects of foreign demand shocks on firms' CO 2 emission intensity from 2007 to 2014. We document that a 10% increase in foreign demand leads to a 0.28% reduction in firms' CO 2 emission intensity. We find that multi-product exporters can benefit more from foreign demand shocks, and further prove the absence of CO 2 leakage due to the EU ETS. This paper demonstrates that firms can be beneficiaries of foreign demand shocks, unmasking the trade-environment nexus by providing micro evidence from the largest developing country.

Abstract:In this paper, we study how weather shocks affect firm-level exports in low and middle income countries. While the impacts are negative on average, we find that large firms are significantly less affected. This feature is robust across sub-samples, specifications and confounding factors. We then examine the aggregate implications of these firm-level effects by studying changes in total exports under different climate scenarios by the end of the century. Results show that the overall trade-deterring effect of future weather conditions would be lower if there were more large firms in low and middle income countries. It suggests that the existing firm-size distribution may increase the aggregate cost of climate change.

Abstract:Using a multi-product trade model, this study investigates the impact of temperature on firms' diversification in the export market. Using export and meteorological data of Chinese firms from 2000 to 2016, the empirical results confirm an inverted U-shaped relationship, implying that extreme temperatures significantly reduce firms' export product diversification. The analysis shows that extreme temperatures primarily reduce the variety of both new and existing products, with a less robust effect on product exit strategies. General trade firms are more adaptable to extreme temperatures than processing trade firms, and are likely to maintain diversified strategies. Stronger regional financial markets and higher energy consumption increase the adaptability of local firms to extreme temperatures. Firms have not yet adapted to local climatic norms. Furthermore, extreme temperatures also partly inhibit diversification of export destinations and relationships. The results of the study show that as climate change intensifies, leading to more frequent extreme temperatures, firms will face significant hurdles in pursuing diversified development strategies, pointing to increasing challenges ahead.

Abstract:This paper explores the impact of extremely hot days on firm-level exports at monthly frequency. We find robust evidence that firm-level exports decline gradually following a heat strike and do not recover within twenty-four months. Specifically, export losses are negligible in the first three months and accumulates to substantial amount eventually: an additional >30°C day in a given month generates cumulative losses up to 1.67% of a firm’s annual exports twenty-four months later. Negative impact of extreme heat on exports is magnified in private-owned firms and agricultural products. The substantial cumulative effect indicates that exporters may bear productivity losses under heat strikes and full adaptation is infeasible within two years. Our findings have significant implications for economic development and climate change policies.

Abstract:Recent research has concluded that foreign trade is a key factor shaping the urbanization process in developing countries. Yet the empirical evidence is still in its infancy. This paper seeks to fill this gap by using the Financial Crisis of 2008 as a quasi-experiment to examine how trade shocks have affected urbanization in China. We find that such shocks have reduced the change in the urbanization rate by 0.4%. These results are robust after controlling for other factors that affect urbanization. We explore the underlying mechanisms and find that trade shocks reduce the urban - rural income gap by lowering the income of urban residents and slowing down the urbanization process.
An Empirical Analysis of Influence from Measures Addressing Climate Change to Trade Competitiveness

Abstract:With greenhouse gas(GHGs) emissions caused by increasing human activities,global climate becomes warmer,and negative effects become more prominent.Addressing climate change has become a world-wide consensus.Global climate change and globalization are intertwined,bringing a revolution in the field of trade.What measures government should take to address climate change,and how these measures will affect the country's trade competitiveness have become a major issue to all countries.OECD countries address climate change and develop low carbon economy more positive,earlier,also more effective,so considering their response to climate change and the impact on trade competitiveness,has an important reference on the role of China.Based on the analysis of measures to address climate change by OECD countries,we expanded the classical gravity trade model,regressed panel data of OECD countries' exports between 1991 and 2008,and then analyzed the impact of typical measures such as carbon taxes and energy efficiency standards on trade competitiveness.The results showed that carbon taxes and energy efficiency standards have a reaction for trade flows,and therefore affect trade competitiveness.However,the impact of carbon tax is not as strong as theoretical expectations.Because in the case that there is a government subsidy or exemption,the reaction may be offset,and trade may increase sometimes.Finally the issue of China's carbon tax was discussed.
Exploring the Impact of International Trade on Carbon Emissions: New Evidence from China’s 282 Cities

Abstract:Carbon emissions (CE) reduction has been an important measure to control global warming. With the deepening of internationalization, the import and export trade can have a significant influence on CE. In this study, the panel data of 282 cities in China from 2003 to 2016 were employed, and linear regression analysis with fixed effects, feasible generalized least squares and Driscoll–Kraay estimators were performed to assess the separate impacts of import and export trade on CE. The results show that there is a positive correlation between imports and CE, while the relationship is contrary for exports. The panel threshold regression method was further used for regression, and it found that there was one threshold value for gross domestic product (GDP) and two threshold values for gross industrial output (GIO) in the model. According to the division of threshold value, the impact of import trade on CE will turn from positive to negative, while the impact of export trade on reducing CE will be further enhanced. The structure of China’s import and export trade are used to illustrate the underlying mechanism of the different effects. For controlling CE in international trade, China should import more high-tech products to upgrade high-emission industries, and reduce the proportion of labor-intensive products exported.

Product Adjustments of Multi-Product Exporters: Evidence from Us-China Trade War

Abstract:The unexpected and unprecedented trade war between the United States and China presents an ideal natural experiment to evaluate the impacts of trade protectionist policies on exporters. This study will explore how multi-product firms adjust their exports in response to the U.S. tariff escalations during the US-China trade war by using firm-level customs trade data of Chinese exporters from January 2018 to June 2019. We find strong evidence of a destruction effect on tariffed products and a chilling effect on non-tariffed products in affected firms, both of which are more pronounced for core products. We also observe an increasing product scope and an increasingly even product-mix distribution for affected exporters.
Short-term impact of climate change on labor market in China: Quantitative spatial analysis based on an oligopsony model

Abstract:Assessing the impact of climate change on the economy is an important issue for designing climate policy. By constructing an oligopsony model to depict the incompleteness of the labor market and using the quantitative spatial model analysis method, we quantitatively estimated the short-term impact of climate change on the labor market in China. Then, to control climate change, the optimal climate change governance intensities (CCGI) of multi-governments satisfying CD preferences and Stackelberg game are designed and solved. The results show that climate change leads to a decrease in wages and labor supply in labor market equilibrium and a loss of market aggregate income and labor scale. Climate change has led to a shift in labor from the agricultural and dirty sectors to the clean sector. The regional labor distribution is also being "disrupted" due to climate change. Moreover, declining migration costs and increased subsidies help to reduce the negative impacts of climate change. The optimal CCGI of the central government is higher than that of the provincial government. The optimal CCGI is higher in the eastern provinces than in the central and western regions. Implementing CCGI would mitigate the negative climate change shocks to the labor market in China and increase welfare. The conclusions of this paper provide strong support for preventing climate change risks and actively participating in global climate change governance.

Abstract:Purpose– The impacts of climate change on agricultural production in the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) are significant, and differ across regions and crops. The substantial regional differences will induce changes in agricultural interregional trade pattern. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the climate change impacts on China’s agricultural interregional trade pattern.Design/methodology/approach– The paper will use the computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to assess the impacts of climate change on the PRC’s agricultural interregional trade flows. The CGE model consists of seven Chinese regions and the rest of the world and six commodities.Findings– The results indicate that northwest, south, central, and northeast PRC will see increases in the outflows of agricultural products in 2030 and 2050. Conversely, outflows from east, north, and southwest PRC will decrease. Agricultural products handling and transportation facilities need to be repositioned to address the changes in agricultural trade flows.Originality/value– Studies on the impacts of climate change on the PRC’s agriculture have been increasing. To the best of our knowledge, however, no previous studies have assessed the impacts of climate change on the PRC’s agricultural interregional trade flows. This paper aims to fill this gap in the literature.

Abstract:We investigate whether climate change affects the efficiency of monetary policy. We use temperature shocks, calculated as temperature deviations from historical average temperatures, to proxy climate change, and utilize a threshold vector autoregression model (TVAR) to estimate the impact of expansionary and tight monetary shocks on economic output under high and low regimes of temperature shocks. Our results characterize a climate change regime-dependent monetary policy. Expansionary monetary policy is less efficient and the negative impact of tight monetary policy is enhanced, when climate change is severe. The results can be explained by the climate-induced credit constraint of commercial banks. Higher temperature shocks lead to increases in banks' non-performing loan ratios, which results in larger credit constraints of banks. Banks tend to be more prudent in credit expansion, and the bank credit channel of monetary policy transmissions is weakened.

Abstract:An extensive number of studies investigate the effects of political relations on trade by estimating a gravity model using annual (or quarterly) data. We argue that the use of low-frequency data introduces an aggregation bias because the cycle of moderate political shocks is much shorter (measured in weeks). Using monthly data from 1990 through 2013 for China, we estimate a model of political relations and conclude that political shocks are short-lived. Narrative evidence from two case studies illustrates the transitory nature of these shocks. A VAR model shows that although political shocks influence exports to China, the effects largely vanish within two months. A comparison of the monthly- and annual-frequency gravity equation regressions illustrates the effects of temporal aggregation.

Abstract:We constructed an Extreme Weather Index to measure extreme weather risks in China. Analyzing macroeconomic data through a structural vector auto-regression model suggests that a negative weather shock leads to persistently low GDP and credit obtained by non-financial firms. In our regression analysis of a panel of firms listed in China, the negative effects of weather shocks on firm level loans were statistically and practically significant. Further analysis suggests that credit risk and expectations are two important impact channels. A high existing credit risk or low confidence among firm managers, amplifies the negative effects of extreme weather on loans.

Abstract:China's economy has achieved significant success by integrating itself into the globalized production system over an extended period. However, it is crucial to address the environmental consequences that accompany rapid economic progress. The correlation between trade and environmental pollution is still controversial in the existing literature, with a lack of research specifically investigating this relationship using detailed data at the firm level. Based on the quasi-natural experiment of China's accession to the WTO, this study uses the DID method to evaluate the causal relationship between trade and the environment experimentally. It is found that trade liberalization significantly increases firms' industrial wastewater emissions, and the empirical results remain robust after parallel trend tests, placebo tests, and replacement variables. The mechanism of action suggests that trade expansion enhances corporate pollution emissions through two channels: attracting foreign investment into the country and intensifying energy consumption. A heterogeneity analysis reveals that the pollution-enhancing effect of trade expansion on enterprises is mainly concentrated in export-oriented enterprises, labor-intensive industries, and coastal regions. Additionally, further analysis shows that trade liberalization not only has local impacts but also spatial spillover effects on enterprise pollution. It is found that enhancing environmental governance and reducing corruption can effectively mitigate the adverse environmental consequences caused by trade liberalization.

Abstract:Shocks to international trade conditions, such as imposing tariffs, not only affects the global economy but also has substantial implications for carbon emissions. However, it is unclear whether the impact of changes in trade on carbon emissions will be consistent or change over time, as both trade patterns and emission intensity are dynamic in nature. Here, we simulated the economy and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in four representative years from 2004 to 2014 under a free trade scenario and a trade restriction scenario. Our simulations show that trade restrictions would have decreased global emissions by 6.0%, 5.7%, 5.2%, and 4.7% in 2004, 2007, 2011 and 2014; however, restrictions also drove a relative increase in emission intensity for all years. Although more pressure to emit was placed on developing regions with trade development over the study period, the impacts of trade restrictions on CO2 emissions weakened due to an absolute decrease in emission intensity across regions over time, especially for developing regions. Enabling continued improvements in emission intensity in developing regions by enhancing financial assistance, knowledge sharing, and technology exchange with trade is therefore critical to ensure win-win situations for both economic development and global carbon mitigation.
