Abstract:A potential approach for following turbulent flow in pipe is presented. In this approach, the sub-laws for the different mechanisms are first established then integrated into a variational criterion for the whole process. As an illustration, the variational criterion dominating the fluid velocity profile in turbulent flow in pipe is examined. The individual extremum tendencies for both viscous and inertial effects as well as their interrelation are analyzed.

Abstract:Simultaneous development of the laminar flow and heat transfer in helical square ducts was numerically studied. The governing equations were written in an orthogonal helical coordinate system and fully parabolized in the axial direction. Results were found out over a wide range of the governing parameters. Two axial velocity entries were taken into account. The development of secondary flow, axial velocity and temperature distribution for the large Dean number were examined in detail and the effects of different governing parameters on the friction factor and the Nusselt number were annlyzee. Many new and interesting conclusions were reached. The present results reveal the nature of fluid flow and heat transfer in the developing region of helical square ducts.

Abstract:A finite volume method (FVM) base on the SIMPLE algorithm as the pressure correction strategy and the traditional staggered mesh is used to investigate steady, fully developed flow of Oldroyd-3-constant fluids through a duct with square cross-section. Both effects of the two viscoelastic material parameters, We and mu, on pattern and strength of the secondary flow are investigated. An amusing sixteen vortices pattern of the secondary flow, which has never been reported, is shown in the present work. The reason for the changes of the pattern and strength of the secondary flow is discussed carefully. We found that it is variation of second normal stress difference that causes the changes of the pattern and strength of the secondary flow.

Abstract:Euler-Lagrange variational principle is used to obtain analytical and numerical flow relations in cylindrical tubes. The method is based on minimizing the total stress in the flow duct using the fluid constitutive relation between stress and rate of strain. Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid models; which include power law, Bingham, Herschel-Bulkley, Carreau and Cross; are used for demonstration.

Abstract:Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to point out a paradox in variational theory for viscous flows. Chien (1984) claimed that a variational principle of maximum power loses for viscous fluids was established, however, it violated the well-known Helmholtz’s principle. Design/methodology/approach – Restricted variables are introduced in the derivation, the first order and the second order of variation of the restricted variables are zero. Findings – An approximate variational principle of minimum power loses is established, which agrees with the Helmholtz’s principle, and the paradox is solved. Research limitations/implications – This paper focusses on incompressible viscose flows, and the theory can be extended to compressible one and other viscose flows. It is still difficult to obtain a variational formulation for Navier-Stokes equations. Practical implications – The variational principle of minimum power loses can be directly used for numerical methods and analytical analysis. Originality/value – It is proved that Chien’s variational principle is a minimum principle.
Variational approach for resolving the flow of generalized Newtonian fluids in circular pipes and plane slits

Abstract:In this paper, we use a generic and general variational method to obtain solutions to the flow of generalized Newtonian fluids through circular pipes and plane slits. The new method is not based on the use of the Euler-Lagrange variational principle and hence it is totally independent of our previous approach which is based on this principle. Instead, the method applies a very generic and general optimization approach which can be justified by the Dirichlet principle although this is not the only possible theoretical justification. The results that were obtained from the new method using nine types of fluid are in total agreement, within certain restrictions, with the results obtained from the traditional methods of fluid mechanics as well as the results obtained from the previous variational approach. In addition to being a useful method in its own for resolving the flow field in circular pipes and plane slits, the new variational method lends more support to the old variational method as well as for the use of variational principles in general to resolve the flow of generalized Newtonian fluids and obtain all the quantities of the flow field which include shear stress, local viscosity, rate of strain, speed profile and volumetric flow rate. The theoretical basis of the new variational method, which rests on the use of the Dirichlet principle, also provides theoretical support to the former variational method.

Abstract:We consider entire solutions $u$ of the equations describing the stationary flow of a generalized Newtonian fluid in 2D concentrating on the question, if a Liouville-type result holds in the sense that the boundedness of $u$ implies its constancy. A positive answer is true for $p$-fluids in the case $p>1$ (including the classical Navier-Stokes system for the choice $p=2$), and recently we established this Liouville property for the Prandtl-Eyring fluid model, for which the dissipative potential has nearly linear growth. Here we finally discuss the case of perfectly plastic fluids whose flow is governed by a von Mises-type stress-strain relation formally corresponding to the case $p=1$. it turns out that, for dissipative potentials of linear growth, the condition of $\mu$-ellipticity with exponent $\mu<2$ is sufficient for proving the Liouville theorem.

Abstract:The work reported in this paper is a systematic experimental and numerical study of friction and heat transfer characteristics of divergent/convergent square ducts with an inclination angle of 1 ∘ in the two direction at cross section. The ratio of duct length to average hydraulic diameter is 10. For the comparison purpose, measurement and simulation are also conducted for a square duct with constant cross section area, which equals to the average cross section area of the convergent/divergent duct. In the numerical simulation the flow is modeled as being three-dimensional and fully elliptic by using the body-fitted finite volume method and the k ɛ turbulence model. The uniform heat flux boundary condition is specified to simulate the electrical heating used in the experiments. The heat transfer performance of the divergent/convergent ducts is compared with the duct with uniform cross section under three constraints (identical mass flow rate, pumping power and pressure drop). The agreement of the experimental and numerical results is quite good except at the duct inlet. Results show that for the three ducts studied there is a weak secondary flow at the cross section, and the circumference distribution of the local heat transfer coefficient is not uniform, with an appreciable reduction in the four corner regions. In addition, the acceleration/deceleration caused by the cross section variation has a profound effect on the turbulent heat transfer: compared with the duct of constant cross section area, the divergent duct generally shows enhanced heat transfer behavior, while the convergent duct has an appreciable reduction in heat transfer performance.

A mixed variational discretization for non-isothermal compressible flow in pipelines

Abstract:We consider the non-isothermal flow of a compressible fluid through pipes. Starting from the full set of Euler equations, we propose a variational characterization of solutions that encodes the conservation of mass, energy, and entropy in a very direct manner. This variational principle is suitable for a conforming Galerkin approximation in space which automatically inherits the basic physical conservation laws. Three different spaces are used for approximation of density, mass flux, and temperature, and we consider a mixed finite element method as one possible choice of suitable approximation spaces. We also investigate the subsequent discretization in time by a problem adapted implicit time stepping scheme for which exact conservation of mass as well as a slight dissipation of energy and increase of entropy are proven which are due to the numerical dissipation of the implicit time discretization. The main arguments of our analysis are rather general and allow us to extend the approach with minor modification to more general boundary conditions and flow models taking into account friction, viscosity, heat conduction, and heat exchange with the surrounding medium.

Abstract:In 2005 it was reported that the boundary-layer flows over an impermeable stretching plate have a new branch of solutions. In this short communication, the corresponding heat transfer problem is considered, and a new branch of temperature distribution is obtained. It is found that the new branch of temperature distributions is mostly rather close to the known branch of solutions, except in case of small Prandtl number. Thus, it is practically rather hard to distinguish the two branches of temperature distributions.
A Theoretical Closure for Turbulent Flows Near Walls

Abstract:This paper proposes a simple new closure principle for turbulent shear flows. The turbulent flow field is divided into an outer and an inner region. The inner region is made up of a log-law region and a wall layer. The wall layer is viewed in terms of the well known inrush-sweep-burst sequence observed since 1967. It is modelled as a transient laminar sub-boundary layer, which obeys the Stokes solution for an impulsively started flat plate. The wall layer may also be modelled with a steady state solution by adding a damping function to the log-law. Closure is achieved by matching the unsteady and steady state solutions at the edge of the wall layer. This procedure in effect feeds information about the transient coherent structures back into the time-averaged solution and determines theoretically the numerical coefficient of the logarithmic law of the wall The method gives a new technique for writing accurate wall functions, valid for all Reynolds numbers, in computer fluid dynamics (CFD) programmes. Abstract:This paper presents symmetry reduction for material stochastic Lagrangian systems with advected quantities whose configuration space is a Lie group. Such variational principles yield deterministic as well as stochastic constrained variational principles for dissipative equations of motion in spatial representation. The general theory is presented for the finite-dimensional situation. In infinite dimensions we obtain partial differential equations and stochastic partial differential equations. When the Lie group is, for example, a diffeomorphism group, the general result is not directly applicable but the setup and method suggest rigorous proofs valid in infinite dimensions which lead to similar results. We apply this technique to the compressible Navier–Stokes equation and to magnetohydrodynamics for charged viscous compressible fluids. A stochastic Kelvin–Noether theorem is presented. We derive, among others, the classical deterministic dissipative equations from purely variational and stochastic principles, without any appeal to thermodynamics.

Abstract:A variational principle is presented for the Navier-Stokes equations in the case of a contained boundary-driven, homogeneous, incompressible, viscous fluid. Based upon making the fluid's total viscous dissipation over a given time interval stationary subject to the constraint of the Navier-Stokes equations, the variational problem looks overconstrained and intractable. However, introducing a nonunique velocity decomposition, u(x,t)=phi(x,t) + nu(x,t), "opens up" the variational problem so that what is presumed a single allowable point over the velocity domain u corresponding to the unique solution of the Navier-Stokes equations becomes a surface with a saddle point over the extended domain (phi,nu). Complementary or dual variational problems can then be constructed to estimate this saddle point value strictly from above as part of a minimization process or below via a maximization procedure. One of these reduced variational principles is the natural and ultimate generalization of the upper bounding problem developed by Doering and Constantin. The other corresponds to the ultimate Busse problem which now acts to lower bound the true dissipation. Crucially, these reduced variational problems require only the solution of a series of linear problems to produce bounds even though their unique intersection is conjectured to correspond to a solution of the nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations.

Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a discrete duality finite volume (DDFV) scheme for the incompressible quasi‐Newtonian Stokes equation. The DDFV method is based on the use of discrete differential operators which satisfy some duality properties analogous to their continuous counterparts in a discrete sense. The DDFV method has a great ability to handle general geometries and meshes. In addition, every component of the velocity gradient can be reconstructed directly, which makes it suitable to deal with the nonlinear terms in the quasi‐Newtonian Stokes equation. We prove that the proposed DDFV scheme is uniquely solvable and of first‐order convergence in the discrete L 2 ‐norms for the velocity, the strain rate tensor, and the pressure, respectively. Ample numerical tests are provided to highlight the performance of the proposed DDFV scheme and to validate the theoretical error analysis, in particular on locally refined nonconforming and polygonal meshes.
Variational structure and two-dimensional subsonic jet flows for compressible Euler system with general incoming flows

Abstract:In this paper, we proved the well-posedness theory of compressible subsonic jet flows for two-dimensional steady Euler system with {\it general} incoming horizontal velocity as long as the flux is larger than a critical value. One of the key observations is that the stream function formulation for two-dimensional compressible steady Euler system enjoys a variational structure even when the flows have nontrivial vorticity, so that the jet problem can be reformulated as a domain variation problem. This variational structure helps to adapt the framework developed by Alt, Caffarelli, and Friedman to study {the jet problem, which is a Bernoulli type free boundary problem. A major technical point to analyze the jet flows is that the inhomogeneous terms in the rescaled equation near the free boundary are always small, even when the vorticity of the flows is big.

Abstract:The work described here shows that the known variational principle for the Navier-Stokes equations and the adjoint system can be modified to produce a set of Euler-Lagrange variational equations which have the same order and same solution as the Navier-Stokes equations provided the adjoint system has a unique solution, and provided in the steady state case, that the Reynolds number remains finite.
