Abstract:TiO2-ZrO2 (Ti-Zr) carrier was prepared by a co-precipitation method and 1 wt. % V2O5 and 0.2 CeO2 (the Mole ratio of Ce to Ti-Zr) was impregnated to obtain the V2O5-CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3. The transient activity tests and the in situ DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) analyses were employed to explore the NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction) mechanism systematically, and by designing various conditions of single or mixing feeding gas and pre-treatment ways, a possible pathway of NOx reduction was proposed. It was found that NH3 exhibited a competitive advantage over NO in its adsorption on the catalyst surface, and could form an active intermediate substance of -NH2. More acid sites and intermediate reaction species (-NH2), at lower temperatures, significantly promoted the SCR activity of the V2O5-0.2CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst. The presence of O2 could promote the conversion of NO to NO2, while NO2 was easier to reduce. The co-existence of NH3 and O2 resulted in the NH3 adsorption strength being lower, as compared to tests without O2, since O2 could occupy a part of the active site. Due to CeO2’s excellent oxygen storage-release capacity, NH3 adsorption was weakened, in comparison to the 1 wt. % V2O5-0.2CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst. If NOx were to be pre-adsorbed in the catalyst, the formation of nitrate and nitro species would be difficult to desorb, which would greatly hinder the SCR reaction. All the findings concluded that NH3-SCR worked mainly through the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism.
DRIFT Study on Cerium−Tungsten/Titiania Catalyst for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with NH3

Abstract:CeO2/TiO2 and CeO2−WO3/TiO2 catalysts prepared by impregnation method assisted with ultrasonic energy were investigated on the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx (NO and NO2) by NH3. The catalytic activity of 10% CeO2/TiO2 (CeTi) was greatly enhanced by the addition of 6% WO3 in the broad temperature range of 200−500 °C, the promotion mechanism was proposed on basis of the results of in situ diffuse reflectance infrared transform spectroscopy (DRIFT). When NH3 was introduced into both catalysts preadsorbed with NO + O2, SCR would not proceed except for the reaction between NO2 and ammonia. For CeO2/TiO2 catalysts, coordinated NH3 linked to Lewis acid sites were the main adsorbed ammonia species. When NO + O2 was introduced, all the ammonia species consumed rapidly, indicating that these species could react with NOx effectively. Two different reaction routes, L-H mechanism at low temperature (<200 °C) and E-R mechanism at high temperatures (>200 °C), were presented for SCR reaction over CeO2/TiO2 catalyst. For CeO2−WO3/TiO2 catalysts, the Lewis acid sites on Ce4+ state could be converted to Brønsted acid sites due to the unsaturated coordination of Cen+ and Wn+ ions. When NO + O2 was introduced, the reaction proceeded more quickly than that on CeO2/TiO2. The reaction route mainly followed E-R mechanism in the temperature range investigated (150−350 °C) over CeO2−WO3/TiO2 catalysts. Tungstation was beneficial for the formation of Ce3+, which would influence the active sites of the catalyst and further change the mechanisms of SCR reaction. In this way, the cooperation of tungstation and the presence of Ce3+ state resulted in the better activity of CeO2−WO3/TiO2 compared to that of CeO2/TiO2.

Abstract:The reaction mechanism of selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3 on Ce-doped HBEA catalysts was investigated using in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The results illustrated that the amide species adsorbed on Lewis acid sites (AlO)(+) and NH4+ species adsorbed on Bronsted acid sites (Al-OH-Si) were main intermediates on HBEA. Only Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism was presented over HBEA catalyst. By contrast, both E-R and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism were presented over Ce(7.0)HBEA and the E-R mechanism was the dominated reaction mechanism. NH4+ adspecies and nitrate adspecies were primary intermediates on Ce(7.0)HBEA. Meanwhile, the presence of Ce3+ could lead to the increase of surface oxygen concentration, which could actively take part in the activation process of ammonia adspecies and NOx adspecies and then facilitated the NH3-SCR reaction. Hence, the NOx conversion of Ce(7.0)HBEA was much higher than that of HBEA. In addition, the surface oxygen vacancy derived from ceria on Ce(7.0)HBEA could inhibit the formation of N2O. As a result, the N-2 selectivity of Ce(7.0)HBEA is higher than that of HBEA. The above results are useful for guiding the way to develop Ce-containing SCR catalysts.

Abstract:An environmentally benign WO3 wrapped cubic CeO2 core–shell catalyst (Ce@W) was developed for the selective catalytic reduction of NO x with NH3. Compared with CeW particles prepared via the conventional co-precipitation method, this core–shell catalyst not only displays higher tolerance to SO2 and H2O, but also exhibits a wider activity temperature window of 250–450 °C, in which NO x conversion and N2 selectivity reaches 100%. The improved performance of Ce@W catalysts can be contributed to the strong interactions between CeO2 (100) and WO3, which generates more Ce3+ and surface chemisorbed oxygen. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTs) reveal that the more thermally stable Brønsted acid sites on Ce@W lead to its excellent high-temperature activity.

Abstract:In this study, we systematically investigated the interaction between NH4HSO4 and WO3-promoted V2O5/TiO2 catalysts in the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3, along with the promotion effect of WO3 on the decomposition and reactivity of NH4HSO4 with NO. In the NH4HSO4-deposited samples, WO3 addition increased the electron cloud density around the S atoms in SO42-, which was beneficial for the reduction of S atoms with +6 formal oxidation number, as in NH4HSO4, to those in the +4 oxidation state, as in SO2. Consequently, WO3-doping led to an increase in the amount of SO2 released at low-temperature regions during the heating process as well as an obvious enhancement in the decomposition behavior of NH4HSO4, as illustrated by decreases in temperatures attributed to the weight loss peaks. Meanwhile, the introduced WO3 had a slight promotion effect on the reactivity of NH4HSO4 with NO, together with an inhibitory effect on the production of N2O during the reaction process. Finally, WO3-promoted catalysts exhibited enhanced SO2-resistance.
Unraveling Alkali-Tolerance Role of Zeolite Coupling CeWOx Catalyst for NOx Reduction

Abstract:The deactivation of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts in the presence of alkali metal is still un-solved to date, there is no fully effective strategy to remedy it. Herein, a series of novel zeolite coupling CeWOx catalysts (CeWOx@ZSM-5) with core-shell structures was synthesized by a simple method. The proposed CeWOx@ZSM-5 catalyst exhibited superior deNOx performance and K-poisoning resistance, which are attributed to the synergy between the shell and active components. The zeolite shell with abundant acid sites can act as a sacrificial agent to preferentially bind to K, thereby decelerating/inhibiting the alkali metal poisoning process of the catalyst. Even after loading 1 wt% K, the NOx conversion remained as high as > 80% at 300-500 degrees C over the CeWOx@ZSM-5 catalyst under humid conditions. The novel zeolite coupling CeWOx catalyst may serve as a workable reference for new, efficient, and highly poisoning-resistant SCR catalysts for practical application.

Abstract:The mechanism of NH3-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) over a CeO2-WO3 catalyst was investigated by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) analysis and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The active sites were on CeO2, while WO3 greatly enhanced the amount and strength of the surface Bronsted acid sites and the NO oxidation ability. Both NH4+ and coordinated NH3 contributed to the SCR reaction. Bridging nitrate and monodentate nitrate were confirmed as the reactive nitrate species. Under SCR reaction conditions, surface NH4NO3 was formed, which played the role of an important intermediate species. Two different pathways for the SCR reaction were suggested for the CeO2-WO3 catalyst.
Influence of CeO2 morphology on WO3/CeO2 catalyzed NO selective catalytic reduction by NH3

Abstract:WO3/CeO2 catalysts with different support morphologies were fabricated by incipient wetness technique and applied to selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3 (NH3-SCR). WO3/CeO2 rod (WCR) displayed higher catalytic activity and resistance to SO2 and H2O compared with WO3/CeO2 polyhedron (WCP) and WO3/CeO2 cube (WCC). N2-BET, XRD, Raman, H2-TPR, TEM, HRTEM, NH3-TPD, XPS and in situ DRIFTS were conducted to investigate the physicochemical properties of the catalysts and the adsorption of NH3 and NOx species on the catalytic surface. These characterization results demonstrated that the larger BET surface area, the smaller CeO2 particle size, the higher surface acidity, the more oxygen defects, the better redox performance, and the higher Ce3+ and Oα ratios of the catalysts played critical functions in obtaining more outstanding NH3-SCR catalytic performance. All of these characterization results were also closely related to the CeO2 morphology. The results of the in situ DRIFTS showed that the WCR had the highest intensities of the adsorbed NOx and NH3 species among these three catalysts. The reactions between adsorbed species attributed to NOx and NH3 on the catalyst surface can also be a key factor in the NH3-SCR catalytic performance enhancement.

Abstract:A series of H3PW12O40 (HPW)-modified Fe2O3 catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 (NH3-SCR) were synthesized via impregnation of HPW on Fe2O3 micro-flowers followed calcination. The optimum HPW/Fe2O3-350-0.5 catalyst exhibits nearly 100% of NO conversion at 240–460 °C as well as excellent SO2 resistance. The number of Brønsted acid sites and Lewis acid sites increases significantly after HPW modification, which promotes the adsorption of NH3. Moreover, the incorporation of HPW decreases the oxidation ability of Fe2O3 catalysts, which effectively inhibits the overoxidization of NH3, resulting in excellent catalytic activity and N2 selectivity. In-situ DRIFTS results indicate that the NH3-SCR reaction on HPW/Fe2O3-350-0.5 catalyst mainly follows Eley–Rideal (E-R) mechanism, in addition, the adsorption and oxidization of SO2 on the surface of HPW/Fe2O3-350-0.5 catalyst are suppressed due to high surface acidity and the decrease of oxidation ability, leading to the enhancement of SO2 tolerance of HPW-modified Fe2O3 catalysts.

Abstract:The effect of synthesis methods on the activity of V/Ce/WTi catalysts was investigated for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by NH3. V/Ce/WTi-DP (deposition precipitation) catalyst showed excellent NH3-SCR performance, especially the better medium-temperature activity and the less N2O formation than V/Ce/WTi-IMP (impregnation). These catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brumauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), and in situ DRIFTS techniques. The XPS and H-2-TPR results revealed that V/Ce/WTi-DP exhibited more surface Ce species, higher level of O-alpha and higher reducibility of Ce species. Reflected by in situ DRIFTS results, the deposition precipitation method (DP) contributed to a greater amount of weakly adsorbed NO2, monodentate nitrate and NH3 species with better reactive activity. Meanwhile, the cis-N2O22- species, an intermediate for N2O formation, was very limited. As a result, these advantages brought about the superior SCR activity and N-2 selectivity for V/Ce/WTi-DP.

Abstract:H3PW12O40-modified MnOx catalysts (denoted as Mn-HPW) were used for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 (NH3-SCR). The optimal Mn-HPW0.02 catalyst exhibited over 90% NOx conversion at 90-270 °C. The physicochemical properties of related catalysts were investigated by various characterization techniques. It was found that the addition of HPW not only enhanced the amount of Lewis acid sites for adsorbing NH3, but also accelerated the reaction between the adsorbed NH3 species and gas-phase NOx, thus facilitating low-temperature NH3-SCR. The redox abilities of the catalysts were decreased due to the addition of HPW, mitigating the overoxidation of adsorbed NH3 species. Thus, NOx conversion in the high-temperature region was improved and the formation of N2O during NH3-SCR was restrained greatly. In-situ DRIFT results revealed that the NH3 substances adsorbed on Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, and bridged nitrate and bidentate nitrate are important active intermediates. NH3-SCR on the Mn and Mn-HPW0.02 catalysts obeyed the Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanisms simultaneously at 120 °C.

Abstract:Fe-based catalysts have a great potential to be used for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x with NH3 reaction due to their low cost, nontoxicity and excellent catalytic activity. The aim of this paper is to investigate Ce doping effect on activity of NH3-SCR over the FeO x /TiO2 catalyst. In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform (DRIFT) technology was utilized to verify the adsorbed species on the surface of FeO x /TiO2 and FeO x -CeO2/TiO2 catalysts. With respect to the obtained results, among the four catalysts studied, the FeO x -CeO2/TiO2 with the FeO x/CeO2 ratio of 3/8 shows the best NO conversion more than 98% in the temperature range of 230–350 °C. The active centers for NH3 adsorption and activation are assigned to Lewis acid sites over the FeO x -CeO2/TiO2 and monodentate nitrates can act as the key intermediate in the NH3-SCR. Moreover, both of Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Eley-Rideal mechanisms are observed over the FeO x -CeO2/TiO2 catalysts in the SCR.

Abstract:H3PW12O40-modified MnOx catalysts (denoted as Mn-HPW) were used for NOx elimination with co-fed NH3. The optimal Mn-HPW0.02 catalyst exhibited over 90% NOx conversion at 90–270 °C. The incorporation of HPW increased the amount of Lewis acid sites of the catalyst for adsorbing NH3, and accelerated the reaction between the adsorbed NH3 species and gas-phase NOx, thus, increasing the low-temperature catalytic activity. The oxidation ability of the Mn catalyst was decreased due to the addition of HPW, thus, mitigating the overoxidation of the adsorbed NH3 species and improving the de-NOx activity and N2 selectivity in the high-temperature region. Abstract:A novel flower-like 0.1%WO3/CeO2(f) catalyst with high-efficiency was fabricated for the selective reduction of NOx by NH3. In contrast to traditional WO3/CeO2, this catalyst exhibited a significant SCR performance of 90% NOx conversion and 95% N2 selectivity within a wide temperature range of 175-450.C and great H2O and/or SO2 resistance under a high GHSV of 177,000 h 1. A variety of analytical techniques including SEM, XRD, XPS, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR and in situ DRIFTS-MS were employed for the catalysts characterization to fully understand the reaction mechanism over WO3/CeO2 catalysts. It was found that the flower-like structure promoted a more uniform dispersion of tungsten species on the support and a stronger interaction between WO3 and CeO2, thereby increasing the acid sites and surface vacancies. Moreover, more chemical active oxygen and trivalent cerium species were presented on 0.1% WO3/CeO2(f). In situ DRIFTS-MS and H2-TPR revealed that the reducibility was optimized for 0.1% WO3/CeO2(f). Then NH3 oxidation species could react with gaseous or adsorbed NOx during Eley-Rideal (E-R) pathway for 0.1%WO3/CeO2(f) at a high temperature (300. C). Meanwhile, NOx was reduced into more active bridged nitrates participating in the reaction via Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) route, contributing to its superior deNOx performance. In comparison, the formation of inert adsorbed NH3 oxidization/ deformation species and bridged nitrates suppressed the SCR reaction over 0.1%WO3/CeO2, resulting in its inferior deNOx activity. This study not only provides a new strategy for developing high-efficiency ceria supported NH3-SCR catalyst, but also lays a foundation for investigating the reaction mechanism of cerium-based catalyst for further practical applications.

Abstract:CeO2-WO3 (CW) catalysts were prepared by situ self-assembly method for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3. With the increasing content of WO3, the interaction between WO3 and CeO2 improved, resulting in the formation of more acid sites, CeO2-WO3 solid solution and excellent redox ability, which could enhance the catalytic activity. Furthermore, an excess of WO3 over CW catalysts could decrease the SCR activity due to the attenuation of interaction. Hence, CW-20 (WO3 was 20 wt% over CeO2-WO3) possessed the widest active temperature window and nearly 100% NOx conversion was obtained at 225–400 °C, which relied on the contents of WO3.

Abstract:CeO2 supported on TiO2 nanoparticle synthesized using hydrothermal method was tested for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO.In comparison with the catalyst prepared using commercial P25 support,CeO2/TiO2-nanoparticle catalyst presented better NO conversion in the whole temperature region.At 250 ℃,Eley-Rideal mechanism contributed mostly for the reaction,in which NH3 coordinated on Lewis acid site reacted with gaseous NO to produce N2 and H2O.The reduced Ce3+ species were re-oxidized to Ce4+ by gaseous O2.
Brønsted Acid Enhanced Hexagonal Cerium Phosphate for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3: in Situ DRIFTS and DFT Investigation.

Abstract:The possible effect of optimized acid sites on NH3-SCR performance and the fundamental mechanism are barely illustrated. In this work, we report two model catalysts of hexagonal (h-CPO) and monoclinic (m-CPO) cerium phosphate with disparate acidity that show different NH3-SCR activities under the same reaction conditions. Bronsted acid sites were found to be crucial for NH3-SCR performance at both low and high temperature. The electron localization discrepancy of h-CPO was more pronounced as compared with m-CPO, leading to the enrichment of P-OH (Bronsted acid site) which could strongly absorb NH3 and then generate NH4+ to participate in fast SCR via Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, resulting in good activity at low temperature. The zeolitic water stored in the open channels of h-CPO could be released as supplement for P-OH sites which prevent the depletion and non-selective oxidation of NH3 thus maintaining its high activity at high temperature via the EleyRideal mechanism. Meanwhile, as DFT calculation revealed, cerium is the electron deficient center which can easily fix NO and NO2 from the intake, generating active NO2(ad) or nitrites and facilitating fast SCR by reacting with NH4+ species. Hence, the superior protonation ability to form P-OH and low energy barrier to generate active nitrites of h-CPO led its T80 NOx conversion to a broaden temperature of 150-450 oC under high GHSV of 177,000 h-1. Furthermore, experimental and DFT calculation also demonstrated that the enriched Bronsted acid sites over h-CPO have largely suppressed SO2 adsorption, thus significantly reducing the formation of metal sulfates and achieving great SO2 resistance. The ammonium sulfate deposits can be storage of NH3, supplying additional reductant to promote high temperature activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Manganese-based catalysts have shown excellent low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity for NOx removal. However, they would always produce a high amount of more toxic byproduct, N2O. Ca modification has been reported to be able to promote N-2 selectivity for SCR catalysts, but the mechanism is still not clear. In this study, a series of Ca-modified Ce0.02Mn0.4/TiO2 SCR catalysts were utilized for mechanism study. In terms of DRIFT analysis, the addition of Ca had significantly reduced the formation of NH on catalyst surface, which limited its reaction with NO to form N2O. Furthermore, Ca addition had also caused a deceased formation of NO2, reducing its reaction with NH3 to form N2O, further increasing the N-2 selectivity of the catalysts. The results present herein could be beneficial to the development of efficient low-temperature SCR catalysts, particularly for Mn-based SCR catalysts.

Abstract:Chromium oxides supported on TiO2 showed good activity for the selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3. The catalytic activity of Cr2O3-SO4 2−/TiO2 catalyst was greatly enhanced by the addition of SO4 2− into TiO2 support. The catalyst surface properties were characterized with NH3-TPD(temperature programmed desorption) and H2-TPR(temperature programmed reduction). The sulphate on the catalyst surface could enhance the acidity and redox of the catalyst obviously. The reaction mechanism on this catalyst was researched in detail by in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscope. Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism existed simultaneously for selective catalytic reduction(SCR) reaction of NO over Cr2O3-SO4 2−/TiO2 catalyst.
