Abstract:A superhydrophobic copper mesh was prepared by a quick and straightforward two-step soaking operation to form the micro-nano coralline-like rough structure for oil/water separation. The modified copper mesh was characterized by SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, XPS, and WCAs. The obtained superhydrophobic copper mesh (WCA = 158.7°) showed excellent mechanical and chemical stability. The modified copper mesh also showed good self-cleaning ability and antifouling performance. The modified copper mesh showed excellent oil/water separation performance as reflected from its separation efficiency, separation flux, and reusability for colza oil, diesel oil, ethyl acetate, chloroform, and hexane oil/water mixtures with above 95% separation efficiency after 20 cycles of reuse. Due to low cost, time-saving, easy-to-prepare, and excellent separation performance, the superhydrophobic copper mesh would have a broad application prospect in oil/water separation.

Abstract:Oil contaminated water is a common problem in the world, thus to effectively separate water and oil is an urgent task for us to resolve. By control of surface wettability of a solid substrate, both superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity on a film can be realized, which is necessary for water and oil separation. Here we report a stable superhydrophobic and superoleophilic ZnO-coated stainless steel mesh film with special hierarchical micro/nanostructures that can be used to separate a water and oil mixture effectively. Namely, the film is superhydrophobic and water cannot penetrate the mesh film because of the large negative capillary effect, while the film is superoleophilic and liquid paraffin oil can spread out quickly and permeate the mesh film spontaneously due to the capillary effect. A detailed investigation indicates that microscale and nanoscale hierarchical structures and the appropriate size of the microscale mesh pores on the mesh films play an important role in obtaining the excellent water and oil separation property. This work provides an alternative to current separation meshes and is promising in various important applications such as separation and filtration, lab-on-a-chip devices and micro/nanofluidic devices.

Abstract:Through the low-temperature hydrothermal route, one kind of two-dimensional (2D) ZnO nanoflakes was grown on the stainless steel mesh coated by Al. After being modified by stearic acid (SA), the coated mesh was found to be superhydrophobic and superoleophilic simultaneously, and the water contact angle can reach to 156.3±2.1°. It could separate a variety of water and oil mixture. The separation efficiency was up to 95%. It was found that the oil with larger surface tension can be easier to penetrate the coated mesh, and then the separate efficiency increased. Besides, a detailed investigation showed that the special hierarchical micro/nanostructures and appropriate size of the mesh played an important role in obtaining the superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. The coated mesh might be practically employed in oil pollution.

Abstract:The nanostructure-based surface texturing can be used to improve the materials wettability. Regarding oil–water separation, designing a surface with special wettability is as an important approach to improve the separation efficiency. Herein, a ZnO nanostructure was prepared by a two-step process for sol–gel process and crystal growth from the liquid phase to achieve both a superhydrophobicity in oil and a superoleophobic property in water. It is found that the filter material with nanostructures presented an excellent wettability. ZnO-coated stainless-steel metal fiber felt had a static underwater oil contact angle of 151.4° ± 0.8° and an underoil water contact angle of 152.7° ± 0.6°. Furthermore, to achieve water/oil separation, the emulsified impurities in both water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsion were effectively intercepted. Our filter materials with a small pore (~5 μm diameter) could separate diverse water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions with a high efficiency (>98%). Finally, the efficacy of filtering quantity on separation performance was also investigated. Our preliminary results showed that the filtration flux decreased with the collection of emulsified impurities. However, the filtration flux could restore after cleaning and drying, suggesting the recyclable nature of our method. Our nanostructured filter material is a promising candidate for both water-in-oil and oil-in-water separation in industry.

Abstract:Recently, there is an urgent demand to remove oil and organic solvents with low surface tension from oily wastewater, which promotes the application of interface biomimetic materials in oil/water separation. In our work, a novel NiAl LDHs coated superhydrophobic and superoleophilic stainless steel mesh (SS-SSM) with efficient oil/water separation performance was successfully prepared. The 3D flower-like structure intercalated by LDHs monocrystalline flakes was anchored on metallic wires in urea solution by a hydrothermal method and decorated with low surface energy molecules. The as-prepared mesh exhibited perfect superhydrophobicity with water contact angle of 156° and sliding angle of 5°, thus achieving self-cleaning property. In addition, the separation efficiency for a series of oil/water mixtures of the coated mesh was studied, which was up to 98% for most sample oils. More importantly, even treated under severer conditions such as ultrasonic, abrasion and chemical etching solution, the as-prepared meshes possessed good reproducibility in terms of contact angles and separation efficiencies. It is expected that the designed mesh could provide a b brand-new method for superhydrophobic surface coating, making it a potential functional material for self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, fluid drag reduction and oil/water separation.
Study on Oil-water Separation of Selective-wettability Meshes with Different Micro/Nano Structures

Abstract:In order to study the oil-water separation ability of meshes with selective-wettability, three types of meshes with micro-flower structure, nano-needles structure and the composite structure of micro flowers and nano-needles were successfully fabricated by in situ displacement and oxidative modification methods. The effects of microstructure, surface wettability and the liquid components on the separation performance, permeation pressure and liquid flux of meshes were then experimental studied. The experimental results showed that the efficiencies of the three meshes for separating various oil-water mixtures reached more than 99.8%, but the separation efficiency of the Cu(OH)2-CS (Cu(OH)2 on the Copper Substrate) mesh and Cu(OH)2-SSS (Cu(OH)2 on Stainless Steel Substrate) mesh were obviously higher than the Cu-SSS (Cu on Stainless Steel Substrate) mesh after 10 times separation because of the better mechanical strength of the rough structures. By comparison, it was found that the separation efficiency of the Cu(OH)2-CS mesh was slightly higher than that of the Cu(OH)2-SSS mesh. But in turn, the Cu(OH)2-SSS mesh presented a higher permeation pressure and higher liquid than other two meshes owing to the combined effects of micro-nano structure and surface wettability. Moreover, the results of separation for multi-component oil-water mixture indicated that the TOC values of Cu-SSS and Cu(OH)2-CS meshes were 21.4% and 31.2% higher than the mean values of the two oils, but TOC value of Cu(OH)2-SSS mesh is about 4.3% lower than the mean value. However, all the fabricated meshes still maintained very high separation efficiencies. In short, all these good performances demonstrate that the prepared meshes, especially Cu(OH)2-SSS mesh with micro-nano structure, have a very broad application prospects.

Abstract:Oil/water separation is widely studied because of the growing discharge of industrial and domestic oily water, as well as frequent petroleum spills; however, on-demand and continuous oil/water separation has seldom been reported. For this purpose, we prepared opposite wetting nickel meshes by creating FeNiOx(OH)(y) micro-/nanostructures on the surface and further modification. The surface morphology, chemical composition, and the wetting property were investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD, Raman spectrum, XPS, and contact angle measurement. The as-prepared superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic and superhydrophobic/superoleophilic meshes could be used for reusable on-demand oil/water separation with high efficiency. Additionally, continuous oil/water separation was realized by integrating the opposite meshes. The current work will be beneficial for the design and development of materials with special wettabilities and the practical application of oil/water separation.

Abstract:Oil leakage and the discharge of industrial oil/water mixtures have posed a serious threat to the water environment and ecosystem. With the purpose of tackling this issue, a Ni3S2 coated mesh with switchable wettability was fabricated for efficient oil-water separation. Surface morphology and chemical compositions of the coated mesh were characterized to analyze the formation mechanism and their influence on surface wettability. The reversible transition between superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity allows the coated mesh to selectively separate heavy or light oil under gravity, respectively. A T-shaped tube with a superhydrophobic mesh and an underwater superoleophobic mesh was proposed to overcome the limitation of oil density and the conventionally necessary intrusion pressure to achieve continuous and efficient separation. This system functioned well in separating complex mixtures including oil-hot water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions. Therefore, this Ni3S2 nanorods grown on stainless steel mesh present a promising solution towards oily water treatment.

Abstract:High flux superwetting material has reverse wettability to oil or water phase, which plays an important part in oil–water separation and is one of the current research hotspots. Herein, we reported a ZIF-67@Cu(OH)2 nanowire array-coated metal mesh prepared using self-assembly and chemical oxidation method. These freshly prepared copper meshes with micro-/nanosecondary rough structure exhibit excellent underwater superoleophobicity and superhydrophilicity. Thus, the as-prepared mesh membrane has an excellent separation capability and can be used for oil–water separation. It shows extremely high efficiency oil–water separation function (99%), excellent cycling ability and high permeation flux (23,854 L m−2 h−1) in several typical oil–water separation processes. The mesh membrane also shows excellent underwater superoleophobicity in different pH values conditions. Besides, the as-prepared mesh membrane shows excellent durability and stability. Consequently, this work provides an economical and effective method for modification on metal substrate to prepare a underwater superoleophobicity/superhydrophilicity material to realize efficient separation of oil–water mixtures.

Multifunctional Zinc Oxide-coated Mesh for Oil/Water Separation and Pollutant Degradation

Abstract:With an operation of low-temperature hydrothermal treatment, a steel mesh was coated with hexagon-shaped nanorods of zinc oxide. The as-prepared mesh shows good wettability of underwater superoleophobicity to the droplet of 1,2-dichloroethane, making it possible for the use in oil/water separation. Mixture of water with various kinds of oil such as gasoline, diesel and petroleum ether can be separated rapidly with a high separation efficiency of 98%. The mesh could suffer an oil pressure of 1.4 kPa, with the oil thickness of 21 cm. Depending on the UV-response property of zinc oxide, the mesh can also be used in the degradation of methylene blue, which makes it a multifunctional material for water treatment.

Abstract:Water contamination arising oil spill and industrial oily wastewater discharge has posed a severe threat to ecological environment and human health. To address the issues, the metal meshes with superwetting performance for selective oil/water separation have received extensive attention. But, it is still a great challenge to fabricate durable meshes with special wettability and high liquid intrusion pressure, which can be utilized for oil/water separation under harsh environments. Herein, two types of MnO2 nanocrystal coated meshes with inverse wettability, namely superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity, were fabricated via a single hydrothermal strategy or combining dipping modification. The resulting superhydrophobic mesh and underwater superoleophobic mesh are suitable for removing heavy oil and light oil from water, respectively. The oil/water separation efficiencies of greater than 96.2% are achieved for the two meshes. Importantly, both meshes exhibit quick separation rate for the permeable liquid and high intrusion pressure (> 1.38 kPa) for the intercepted liquid, and can maintain excellent superwetting performance and high oil/water separation efficiency under harsh environments (acidic, alkakine and high-concentration salt solutions). We believe the asfabricated meshes are promising and effective filters for purifying oil-polluted water.

Abstract:Development of electrospun nanofiber membranes with the selective wettability characteristics for effectively separating oil–water mixtures is an extremely advisable strategy. In this study, a superhydrophobic electrospinning carbon nanofiber (F/ZnO/CNF) membrane was successfully prepared by electrospinning and in-situ growth of ZnO, and subsequent fluorination reaction with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (POTS). Benefiting from the influence of needle-like nanostructure and low surface energy, the as-prepared F/ZnO/CNF membrane shows excellent superhydrophobicity. When the growth duration of ZnO is 3 h, the obtained F/ZnO/CNF-3 membrane possesses outstanding water contact angle (WCA, 159.7°) and splendid oil–water separation efficiency (>99 %). Meanwhile, due to its the superior environmental stability the obtained F/ZnO/CNF-3 membrane exhibits excellent low and high temperature resistance, and enhanced resistance to various organic solvents in the face of a series of harsh environments.

Abstract:Oil-water separations are helping with urgent issues due to increasing industrial oily wastewater, as well as frequent oil spill accidents. Membrane-based materials with special wettability are desired to separate oils from water. However, fabrication of energy-efficient and stable membranes that are suitable for practical oil-water separation remains challenging. Zeolite films have attracted intense research interest due to their unique pore character, excellent chemical, thermal and mechanical stability, etc. Here we first demonstrate zeolite-coated mesh films for gravity-driven oil-water separation. High separation efficiency of various oils can be achieved based on the excellent superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity of the zeolite surface. Flux and intrusion pressure are tunable by simply changing the pore size, dependent on the crystallization time of the zeolite crystals, of the zeolite meshes. More importantly, such films are corrosion-resistant in the presence of corrosive media, which gives them promise as candidates in practical applications of oil-water separation.

Abstract:A novel micro/nanoscale rough structured superhydrophilic hybrid-coated mesh that shows underwater superoleophobic behavior is fabricated by spray casting or dipping nanoparticle–polymer suspensions on stainless steel mesh substrates. Water droplets can spread over the mesh completely; meanwhile, oil droplets can roll off the mesh at low tilt angles without any penetration. Besides overcoming the oil-fouling problem of many superhydrophilic coatings, this superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic mesh can be used to separate oil and water. The simple method used here to prepare the organic–inorganic hybrid coatings successfully produced controllable micro-nano binary roughness and also achieved a rough topography of micro-nano binary structure by controlling the content of inorganic particles. The mechanism of oil–water separation by the superhydrophilic and superoleophobic membrane is rationalized by considering capillary mechanics. Tetraethyl orathosilicate (TEOS) as a base was used to prepare the nano-SiO2 solution as a nano-dopant through a sol-gel process, while polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as the film binder and glutaraldehyde as the cross-linking agent; the mixture was dip-coated on the surface of 300-mesh stainless steel mesh to form superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic film. Properties of nano-SiO2 represented by infrared spectroscopy and surface topography of the film observed under scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicated that the film surface had a coarse micro–nano binary structure; the effect of nano-SiO2 doping amount on the film’s surface topography and the effect of such surface topography on hydrophilicity of the film were studied; contact angle of water on such surface was tested as 0° by the surface contact angle tester and spread quickly; the underwater contact angle to oil was 158°, showing superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties. The effect of the dosing amount of cross-linking agent to the waterproof swelling property and the permeate flux of the film were studied; the oil–water separation effect of the film to oil–water suspension and oil–water emulsion was studied too, and in both cases the separation efficiency reached 99%, which finally reduced the oil content to be lower than 50 mg/L. The effect of filtration times to permeate flux was studied, and it was found that the more hydrophilic the film was, the stronger the stain resistance would be, and the permeate flux would gradually decrease along with the increase of filtration times.

Abstract:Stimulus-responsive surface wettability, especially photoresponsive surface wettability, has been intensively studied. Meanwhile, multifunctional surfaces, especially for the treatment of oil contaminated water, have aroused worldwide attention. Recently, pH-responsive surfaces with controllable oil-water separation have also been reported. However, photoresponsive water-oil separation is still a challenge. Here we report photo-induced water-oil separation based on the switchable superhydrophobicity-superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity of aligned ZnO nanorod array-coated mesh films, which shows excellent controllability and high separation efficiency of different types of water-oil mixtures in an oil-water-solid three-phase system. The underwater superoleophobicity of the aligned ZnO nanorod array-coated stainless steel mesh film can effectively prevent the mesh film from being polluted by oils. This work is promising in photo-induced water-oil mixture treatments such as water-removal from a micro-reaction system and controllable filtration, and may also provide interesting insight into the design of novel functional devices based on controllable surface wettability.
A robust and high-throughput superhydrophobic-superoleophilic Zn/Ni composite coating prepared on stainless steel mesh for oil-water separation

Abstract:Frequent oil spills and the discharge of oily wastewater have adverse effects on the environment and ecosystems. Against the backdrop of escalating environmental concerns, developing high-performing and eco-friendly oil-water separation techniques is crucial. In this study, we successfully created a PFOTS-Zn/Ni superhydrophobic-superoleophilic coating, abbreviated as PZNM, by electroplating Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ on the stainless steel mesh, followed by modification with perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane-ethanol solution. The wettability test results show that the water contact angle (WCA) reaches 161.3°, with a water sliding angle (WSA) of 2°, and the oil contact angle (OCA) is approximately 0°. Subsequently, the PZNM samples were subjected to tests including blade scratching combined with sandpaper abrasion, tape peeling, bending tests, submerging in acidic and alkaline solutions, high-temperature gradient exposure, and electrochemical corrosion to verify their outstanding long-term durability. Most importantly, it can be shaped into a practical continuous oil-water separation device. In the oil-water separation test, it was found that the superhydrophobic-superoleophilic PZNM achieves highly efficient oil-water separation, with a water/n-hexadecane separation efficiency of up to 93.2 % and a water-chloroform separation flux of 6450±30 L·m −2 ·h −1 . The preparation process is straightforward and green, providing an economical solution. This design holds considerable prospects for applications in the domain of oil-water separation.

Abstract:<p>Special wettability material is an important material for oily wastewater treatment. Among various wettability materials, the metal mesh material showed great advantages, such as high mechanical strength, high separation efficiency, and self-cleaning properties based on recent studies. This review article firstly describes the basic mechanism of surface wettability, including the contact angle in the air (e.g. Young's mode, Wenzel's mode, and Cassie-Baxter's mode), the contact angle hysteresis, and the rolling angle. The special wettability including superhydrophobic-oleophilic, hydrophilic-oleophobic, hydrophilic-underwater oleophobic, and switchable wettability and characteristic of the fabrication method and are discussed in this paper. The properties of the various metals that can be used for oil-water separation are summarized. Abstract:Functional materials based on the special wettability of the surface have always been the focus of scientific research, which are of great significance in the treatment of oily sewage and oil spill cleaning. The easily achievable hydrophobic/oleophilic and hydrophilic/underwater oleophobic surfaces cannot fully meet the needs of oil-water separation, while the ideal hydrophilic/oleophobic separation nets are less studied due to their "abnormal" wetting properties. In this study, a kind of hydrophilic/oleophobic copper mesh was prepared, which has hydrophobic-hydrophilic switching/oleophobic wetting properties, can separate immiscible oil and water, and has good recycling, water resistance, Frictional stability.

Abstract:Large-area ZnO nanorod arrays were synthesized successfully on the stainless steel mesh through chemical vapor deposition route. The coated mesh shows good water permeability after ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, while it is impermeable to water after dark storage. This repeatable process suggests that the wettability transition of the rough surface is complete reversible. Besides, the special hierarchical nanostructures and the suitable size of the original mesh play an important role in smart controllability of the water permeability. The reversible transition of surface wettability has potential applications in many aspects, such as microchips, micro-fluidic devices, and biotechnology.
