Abstract:Vermiculites were intercalated by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide through stirring in hot water, milling in a ball mill, boiling in a Soxhlet extractor and stirring in a twist moment rheometer mixer. The microstructures and properties of organic vermiculites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier infrared spectra and thermal gravimetric analysis. The results indicate different intercalation techniques cause the variation of the interlayer spacing and microstructures of organic vermiculites, and the content of organic molecules in the silicate interlayer increases with the expansion of interlayer spacing.

Abstract:The vermiculites were intercalated by hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA·Br) through stirring in hot water, ball milling, boiling and stirring in HAAKE mixer. The microstructures and properties of organic vermiculites were characterized by means of XRD. The results indicate that the configurations of HDTMA+ refer to paraffin type monolayer, paraffin type bilayer and lateral bilayer, and that the configuration types decrease while the values of interlayer spaces increase with the rising of temperature and intensifying of mechanical force in different intercalation means.

Abstract:In order to understand the microscopic properties of alkylammonium-intercalated vermiculites, molecular dynamics simulations employing the clayff-CVFF force field were performed to obtain the interlayer structures and dynamics. The layering behavior of alkyl chains was uncovered. With the model used in the present study (1.2 e per unit cell), the alkyl chains formed monolayers with carbon-chain lengths of C 6 , bilayers from C 7 to C 10 , and pseudo-trimolecular layers from C 15 to C 18 . Intermediate states also existed between bilayer and pseudo-trimolecular layer states from C 11 to C 14 . The ammonium groups had two locations: most ammonium groups were located over the six-member rings (~90%), and the rest above the substitution sites (~10%). The ammonium groups interacted with the vermiculite surface through H bonds between ammonium H atoms and surface O atoms. The ammonium groups were fixed firmly on surfaces and, therefore, had very low mobility. The alkyl chains were slightly more mobile. The similarities and differences between alkylammonium-intercalated vermiculites and smectites were revealed. The layering behaviors of alkyl chains were similar in alkylammonium-intercalated vermiculites and smectites: the alkyl chain behavior was controlled by both the amount of layer charge and the carbon chain length. The distributions of ammonium groups, however, were different, caused by the layer-charge distribution in vermiculites being different from that in smectites. The atomic-level results derived in the present study will be useful for future research into and the applications of organo-vermiculites.

Abstract:Crude vermiculite is used as raw materials, heat-treated for activation, leached with a complexing acid, exchanged with sodium solution, following contacted with polyhydroxyl aluminium solution. The Al-intercalated vermiculites are prepared by ion exchange. The phase and microstructure of the composite material are analyzed by means of XRD, TEM, TG-DSC, et al. The results reveal that the basal spacing of vermiculite expanded by intercalation of Al-species, and the interlayer of vermiculite inlaid with a large amount of nanometer Al-species particles.

Abstract:Organically modified clays exhibit adsorption capacities for cations, anions, and nonpolar organic compounds, which make them valuable for various environmental technical applications. Research into organic molecule modified montmorillonite should place importance on studying the mechanism of the intercalation process. Herein a new kind of green and steady ionic liquid, 1-Hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride monohydrate (C16mimCl) has been chosen as the intercalant agent. We have investigated the process that C16mimCl is intercalated into Na-montmorillonite in aqueous solution under batch studies and molecular simulations. The C16mimCl intercalation has been found relatively fast with a large rate constant. The intercalation is driven by both cations exchange and negative charge on the layer surface. The process is affected by the initial concentration and pH value of the solution; the basal spacing is increased to 2.88nm after intercalation. Molecular dynamic simulation further reveals that the initial concentration of C16mimCl can influence its configuration in the interlayer, causing the change of interlayer spacing. Apart from the electrostatic interaction, the hydrophobicity of the organic molecule also plays an important role in the intercalation process. Overall, ionic liquid intercalated montmorillonite is a promising environmental composite material with broad application potentials such as chemical fiber and aviation.

Abstract:It is well known that the intercalation of montmorillonite (Mt) with organic cations is a fast process. During the intercalation, the interaction between the original cations and the structure layer of Mt keeps changing, and the basal spacing of Mt keeps increasing until an organic environment has been built in the interlayer. Many properties of Mt also change during the intercalation, such as hydrophobic or hydrophilic property and thermal stability. In this research, the impact of intercalation on the properties of Mt was studied by investigating the change in basal spacing and energy that coordinates the interlayer cations during the intercalation of Mt with organic cations. The interaction between interlayer cations and the layers in the Mt structure and the change in the system energy were obtained by using molecular dynamics simulation. All the experiment and calculation results provide a theoretical proof in organic intercalation mechanism.

Abstract:This study employs molecular dynamics modeling to examine the interlayer microstructures of montmorillonite intercalated with different chains of CnmimCl montmorillonites with varying chain lengths, intercalation amount, arrangement and energy. C4mim+ and C8mim+ arrange themselves in monolayers, while C12mim+ and C16mim+ in parallel bilayers or tilt aligning. The basal spacing of montmorillonite and the corresponding energy increased as the chain length of organic cations is increased. It is indicated that no bond has been formed for N+O due to the minimum distances of no less than 3.1Å and angles of 35°–45° between N+ in Cnmim+ and silicon–oxygen tetrahedron. These modeling results provide insights into the understanding of synthesized Cnmim+-montmorillonite microstructure and guidelines for relevant engineering applications.

Abstract:Vermiculite is a layer silicate with an interlayer spacing about 1-2nm. The interlayer of inorganic-pillared vermiculite inlaid with a large amount of nanometer particles and micropores. It isn't suitable to characterize the structure of inorganic-pillared vermiculite by SEM and TEM. In this paper, the microstructure of inorganic-pillared vermiculites obtained at different steps is characterized by XRD method. The interlayer spacing of inorganic-pillared vermiculite is obtained by analyzing the diffraction peak position and intensity in XRD patterns. The results show that the inorganic component is successfully inserted into the interlayer of vermiculite. Pillared vermiculite show higher intrinsic thermal stability and intensity than crude vermiculite.

Abstract:The inorganic montmorillonite was modified with Gemini quaternary ammonium salt, hexadecyl dimethyl betaine and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide which were used as organic reagents of montmorillonite.Then these montmorillonites treated by the three organic reagents were intercalated by a viscoelastic macromolecule.The modified montmorillonites and viscoelastic macromolecule intercalating the three kinds of organic montmorillonites were analyzed by X-ray diffraction.The results illustrate that the best organic reagents of montmorillonite is Gemini quaternary ammonium salt and the optimum intercalating content of viscoelastic macromolecule is the system with organic montmorillonite modified with Gemini quaternary ammonium salt.

Abstract:Illite particles were exfoliated from the illite-organics intercalation precursor in the ultrasound process. Four intercalating agents (glycerol, hydrazine hydrate, dimethyl sulfoxide, and urea) were selected to study the intercalation reaction for purified illite, thermal activated illite, and acidified illite and to prepare different illite-organics intercalation complexes. The resulting intercalation complexes and exfoliated illite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the zeta potential test, the particle size test and thermogravimetry analysis (TG). XRD results showed that the thermal activation and subsequent acidification treatment to exchange K+ in the interlayer of illite with H+ is a necessary condition for organic intercalation. FTIR and TG analysis confirmed the intercalation of four intercalating agents into the interlayer of illite. During the high-temperature ultrasonic treatment, the organic molecules were deintercalated from the interlayers of illite-organics intercalation complexes, leading to the separation of the illite layers. The d001 diffraction of illite in XRD patterns became broad and weak after ultrasonic treatment; this indicated the random orientation of illite platelets. Particle size analysis showed the exfoliated illite (IUE) from the illite-urea intercalation complex possessed the smaller particle diameter. SEM and TEM observation showed the particle size of IUE is 0.5–4 μm with a layer thickness of approximately 200–300 nm. Moreover, the exfoliation of illite layers exposed more internal layers with negative charge, leading to the decrease of zeta potential.

Abstract:A series of long-chain n-alkylamine-intercalated layered V2O5 materials were synthesized through a simple and quick route. X-ray diffraction (XRD), framework FT-IR and diffuse reflectance UV-visible spectroscopy (DR UV-Vis) were employed to investigate the structure of the obtained products. An excellent linear relationship between the basal interlayer distances of the n-alkylamine-intercalated V2O5 and the number of carbon atoms in the n-alkyl chain (d(001)=0.l60n(c)+0.731 mn) with an exception for n-hexadecanamine was presented. n-Hexadecanamine-intercalated V2O5 was composed of two guest-intercalated layered phases, and the basal interlayer distances (d(001)) of the two phases were 4.01 and 3.20 mu, respectively. The intercalation behavior of titanium(IV) (triethanolaminato)-isopropoxide (TEAIP) in layered V2O5 was also investigated, and the TEAIP intercalated layered V2O5 product was obtained.

Abstract:Isothermal-isobaric (NPT) molecular dynamics simulation has been performed to investigate the layering behavior and structure of nanoconfined quaternary alkylammoniums in organoclays. This work is focused on systems consisting of two clay layers and a number of alkylammoniums, and involves the use of modified Dreiding force field. The simulated basal spacings of organoclays agree satisfactorily with the experimental results in the literature. The atomic density profiles in the direction normal to the clay surface indicate that the alkyl chains within the interlayer space of montmorillonite exhibit an obvious layering behavior. The headgroups of long alkyl chains are distributed within two layers close to the clay surface, whereas the distributions of methyl and methylene groups are strongly dependent on the alkyl chain length and clay layer charge. Monolayer, bilayer, and pseudo-trilayer structures are found in organoclays modified with single long alkyl chains, which are identical to the structural models based on the measured basal spacings. A pseudo-quadrilayer structure, for the first time to our knowledge, is also identified in organoclays with double long alkyl chains. In the mixture structure of paraffin-type and multilayer, alkyl chains do not lie flat within a single layer but interlace, and also jump to the next layer in pseudo-trilayer as well as next nearest layer in pseudo-quadrilayer.
An Experimental Study on the Modification of Kaolinite with Organic Compounds

Abstract:The study on intercalation or adsorption of some organic compounds in kaolinite or its surfaces and its stability is made in this paper. The organic compounds include dimethyl sulphoxide, acrylamide and silane coupling agents. The c-axis spacing in kaolinite expands to a large value of 1.1454 nm as a result of intercalation of polar compound into kaolinite. Acrylamide can be intercalated into kaolinite by virtue of dimethyl sulphoxide and is stable in kaolinite after being heated. Adsorption of silane coupling agents onto kaolinite surfaces is also stable and results in the formation of organic kaolinite.

Abstract:Intercalated sericite was prepared by intercalation of cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) into activated sericite through ion exchange with the following two steps: the activation of sericite by thermal modification, acid activation and sodium modification; the ion exchange intercalation of CTA+into activated sericite. Effects of reaction time, reaction temperature, CTAB quantity, kinds of medium, and aqueous pH on the intercalation of activated sericite were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated that the CTA+entered sericite interlayers and anchored in the aluminosilicate interlayers through strong electrostatic attraction. The arrangement of CTA+in sericite interlayers was that alkyl chain of CTA+mainly tilted at an angle about 60° (paraffin-type bilayer) and 38° (paraffin-type monolayer) with aluminosilicate layers. The largest interlayer space was enlarged from 0.9 nm to 5.2 nm. The intercalated sericite could be used as an excellent layer silicate to prepare clay-polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract:In situ two-dimensional NMR and fluorescence emission spectroscopy were employed to investigate the cooperative structure-direction effect of organic amine such as morpholine in the synthesis of aluminophosphate molecular sieves in ionic liquids. In situ rotating frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectra (ROESY) together with fluorescence measurements demonstrate that the aggregates between imidazolium cations and morpholines through intermolecular hydrogen bonds can be formed in the gel during the crystallization of molecular sieves. Combining with the characterizations of the solid products by solid-state NMR, it is verified that different aggregates of organic amines with imidazolium cations, which is similar to self-assembled supramolecular analogues, could act as the structure-directing agents for selective tuning of the framework topologies such as AEL, AFI and LTA in the final solid products.

Abstract:Kaolinite intercalation compounds were prepared by intercalating fatty acids and quaternary ammonium salts into kaolinite layers, using methanol-grafted kaolinite as the precursor. Meanwhile, massive lamellas were exfoliated during the intercalation process. The interlayer structure, chemical bonding and morphology of kaolinite before and after intercalation were characterized in detail. As the alkyl chain length increases, the basal spacing of kaolinite increases gradually. The morphology analysis indicated that the ionic type of intercalation agent has a more important influence on the morphology change of kaolinite than their alkyl chain length. The initial kaolinite layers were mostly transformed into nanoscrolls in the product intercalated with stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (STAC). The present study demonstrates the arrangement model of intercalated molecules between kaolinite layers using X-ray diffraction (XRD) in conjunction with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and stereochemical calculation. On the basis of a probed arrangement model, the mechanism of effect of the alkyl chain length and ionic type of intercalation agent on the morphology of exfoliated kaolinite is suggested.

Abstract:A series of organic-vermiculite/polyimide (OVMT/PI) hybrid films were successfully prepared by in situ polymerization using hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) modified vermiculite (VMT) as filler. XRD analysis showed the OVMT were exfoliated in the polymeric matrix below 1.5wt%. The tensile strength and elongation at break increased with the addition of OVMT and up to maximum at 1.5 wt%. The Tgs of the films were nearly 400°C indicating that the incorporation of OVMT did not obviously affect the thermal stability of PI films.

Abstract:The Mg-vermiculite (MVerm) with the nano-layered structure was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method at 300 degrees C. The concentration of NaOH solution was found to be the most important factor for the formation of layered MVerm, and the optimal concentration was 2.05 mol/L. The structure, morphology and chemical composition of MVerm with layered structure were demonstrated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The basal spacing among interlayers of the MVerm material characterized by XRD was 1.169 nm. XRF results showed that the chemical composition of the as-synthesized MVerm was closest to the NVerm when the molar ratio of Si/Na was adjusted to 1/2.5. Furthermore, TG-DSC results indicated the as-synthesized MVerm exhibited similar thermal properties with other layered silicate materials. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic superlattices are a class of artificial structures of significant scientific and technological importance. Forming these hybrid materials can be achieved via controlled intercalation of organic molecules into inorganic layered hosts, which is a complex course involving multiple physicochemical processes. In solution phase, it is further complicated by interaction of solvent molecules with the intercalant and/or host. Here we describe an intercalation system exhibiting strong solvent-dependent kinetics and phase evolution. In revisiting intercalation of ferrocene into layered VOPO4·2H2O material by taking into account the influence of solvent, we are able to unravel molecular configurations of ferrocene molecules. An exclusive orientation of ferrocene but different arrangements among the layers are concluded in two model solvents. Resolving this complicated structure is possible thanks to a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Our study provides new insights into understanding molecular configurations and controlling intercalation kinetics in creating organic-inorganic superlattices, which may offer unprecedented properties beyond conventional materials.
Organo-Vermiculites Modified by Aza-Containing Gemini Surfactants: Efficient Uptake of 2-Naphthol and Bromophenol Blue

Abstract:To explore the effect of spacer structure on the adsorption capability of organo-vermiculites (organo-Vts), a series of aza-containing gemini surfactants (5N, 7N and 8N) are applied to modify Na-vermiculite (Na-Vt). Large interlayer spacing, strong binding strength and high modifier availability are observed in organo-Vts, which endow them with superiority for the adsorption of 2-naphthol (2-NP) and bromophenol blue (BPB). The maximum adsorption capacities of 5N-Vt, 7N-Vt and 8N-Vt toward 2-NP/BPB are 142.08/364.49, 156.61/372.65 and 146.50/287.90 mg/g, respectively, with the adsorption processes well fit by the PSO model and Freundlich isotherm. The quicker adsorption equilibrium of 2-NP than BPB is due to the easier diffusion of smaller 2-NP molecules into the interlayer space of organo-Vts. Moreover, stable regeneration of 7N-Vt is verified, with feasibility in the binary-component system that is demonstrated. A combination of theoretical simulation and characterization is conducted to reveal the adsorption mechanism; the adsorption processes are mainly through partition processes, electrostatic interaction and functional interactions, in which the spacer structure affects the interlayer environment and adsorptive site distribution, whereas the adsorbate structure plays a role in the diffusion process and secondary intermolecular interactions. The results of this study demonstrate the versatile applicability of aza-based organo-Vts targeted at the removal of phenols and dyes as well as provide theoretical guidance for the structural optimization and mechanistic exploration of organo-Vt adsorbents.
