Abstract:A simple division of close-aperture Z-scan curve by open-aperture Z-scan is conveniently used to obtain the nonlinear refractive index. It usually causes an error, which even reaches up to over 50% for Z-scan measurements with a pinhole or a medium with a high nonlinear absorption. Here the influence of nonlinear absorption on the determination of nonlinear refraction by Z-scan is analysed. We suggest that the error can be reduced greatly by a simple analysis of the symmetric features (symmetric method) of Z-scan curves from the closed-aperture Z-scan curve. As an example, experiments were carried out on CS2 solution of C60 derivative, symmetric method agrees well with exact simulation.

Abstract:Characterizing the nonlinear optical properties of various materials plays a prerequisite role in nonlinear optics. Among different methods, the well-known Z-scan technique and the modified versions have been recognized as a simple and accurate method for measuring both the real and imaginary parts of the nonlinear refractive index. However, all the Z-scan methods based on detecting small beam variations put forward a severe restriction on the roughness of materials. Therefore, measuring nonlinear optical properties of highly scattering media still remain challenging. Inspired by the innovation of conventional Z-scan method that converting the wavefront phase shift to the easily measurable spatial pattern in far-field, the alternative spectral domain Z-scan technique was presented in this paper. It has a great potential for highly scattering medium, based on the scattering efficiency is insensitive to the wavelength for Mie scattering as the wavelengths are far smaller than the roughness. Moreover, to demonstrate the advantages of spectral domain Z-scan technique, the nonlinear refraction of polished slides and frosted slides was measured, which agrees well with previous reports.

Abstract:The Z-scan technique is a popular method for measuring optical nonlinearities using a single laser beam. We describe a simplified second Z-scan technique for cases where nonlinear refraction is accompanied by nonlinear absorption to separately evaluate the nonlinear refraction and the nonlinear absorption by performing straightforward measurement with the aperture removed. We divide the normalized transmittance of the closed aperture (S < 1) Z-scan by that of the open-aperture (S = 1) Z-scan. It is found that not only the ratio rho of the imaginary part chi(I)((3)) to the real part chi(R)((3)) of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility chi((3)) but also the linear transmittance S of the aperture has a great influence on the performance of the second Z-scan. Some useful results, which determine whether a second Z-scan can be performed or not, have been obtained for the rho dependence of the critical linear transmittance S-c of the aperture and S dependence of the critical ratio rho(c). These results may be applied to timely adjusted experimental conditions in order to obtain highly accurate data. We demonstrate this method on a CH3OH solution of Co2L3 with 7 ns laser pulses.

Abstract:The Z-scan technique is a popular method for measuring degenerate optical nonlinearities using a single laser beam. Abstract:We suggest an accurate method for extracting nonlinear refraction from the closed aperture Z-scan transmittance curve with the aid of the open aperture Z-scan transmittance curve; this method possesses very high accuracy, especially, in the presence of nonlinear absorption and/or for the larger linear transmittance of the aperture. The relative error of the results given by our method is only weakly dependent on the intensity of the incident light; which is a significant advantage over other methods. This method is also demonstrated experimentally on a solution of Ni(mpo)(2) complex.

Abstract:We describe a modified Z-scan technique for the case when nonlinear refraction is accompanied by nonlinear absorption to separately evaluate the nonlinear refraction and the nonlinear absorption by performing straightforward measurements with the aperture removed. We divide the closed aperture (S < 1) normalized Z-scan by a scan with an open aperture (S = 1). With nanosecond scale at a 532 nm wavelength, we first measured the nonlinear optical absorption and refraction coefficients of a solution of Ni(Ac)2[N-(8-quinolyl) pyridine-2-carboxamide] · 4H2O by using the modified Z-scan technique. The nonlinear absorption originates from the near resonant two-photon absorption while the mechanism of the nonlinear refraction is the near resonant two-photon absorption transition enhancement. The linear increasing dependences of the optical nonlinearities on the incident irradiance arise from the population redistribution due to the near resonant two-photon absorption.

Abstract:We report the theoretical investigation of the Z-scan technique for characterizing the instantaneous Kerr non-linearity of an optically thin multiphoton absorber. Based on the Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral method, we study the characteristics of the closed-aperture Z-scan traces. Most importantly, we present the analytical formulae of the closed-aperture Z-scan transmittance with simultaneous Kerr effect and n-photon absorption. Besides, we demonstrate that the determination of the third-order nonlinear refractive index in multiphoton absorbers becomes timesaving yet unambiguously by the presented theory. Abstract:The features of the closed-aperture (CA) Z-scan transmittance curves have been studied in detail when the third-order nonlinear refraction and absorption, both of which can be independently positive or negative, are simultaneously present. We found that whether the peak–valley or valley–peak structure exists or not, depends on the ratio ρ of the imaginary part χI(3) to the real part χR(3) of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) which are caused by nonlinear refraction and absorption respectively. This communication also gives the ρ dependences of the distance between the peak position and valley position, the difference between peak transmittance and the valley transmittance, the ratio of peak height to the valley depth for CA Z-scan, and especially the exact critical value ρc which determines whether the peak–valley or valley–peak structure exists or not, with Gaussian beams for the first time to our knowledge.

Abstract:We report a theoretical study of the Z-scan technique by using quasi-one-dimensional slit beams for characterizing third-order optical nonlinearity. We verify that the sensitivity of this Z-scan scheme is roughly the same level as top-hat beams and is greatly higher than Gaussian beams by a factor of approximately 2.5. This scheme should have the capability to measure less than a lambda/500 wave-front distortion at least. Numerical formulas obtained in theory allow direct estimation of nonlinear refraction and absorption coefficients from the normalized peak-valley transmittance difference measured. Some salient features are also discussed. This Z-scan scheme is also demonstrated experimentally. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The modified Z-scan technique using the quasi-one-dimensional slit (QODS) beam for characterizing the third-order optical nonlinearity has been reported recently. In the present work, we investigate the effect of the finite length of the slit in the QODS beam Z-scan for the practical experimental conditions, and then give an empirical expression that allows the direct estimation of nonlinear refraction coefficient from the measured normalized peak-valley transmittance difference. In particular, we explore relatively in detail the influences of the sample imperfection on the Z-scan traces, such as the hollow hole of the sample and the nonuniform nonlinearity. Compared with the other Z-scan techniques, such as the top-hat and Gaussian-beam Z-scans, we find that the QODS beam Z-scan has the great improvement for the sample imperfections. The results suggest that the QODS beam Z-scan is a more promising and useful technique for characterizing the optical nonlinearity of an imperfect sample.

Abstract:The influence of thermally induced optical nonlinearities on Z-scan measurements with a nanosecond pulse laser is investigated theoretically. The results demonstrate that thermal effect plays an important role in certain circumstance. As an example, the optical nonlinearities of CS2 with an adjustable linear absorption coefficient which is used to alter the magnitude of thermally induced optical nonlinearities are analysed, and the results show that thermal effect even makes the change of the sign of optical nonlinearities.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study on the Z-scan characteristics of thin nonlinear optical media with simultaneous two- and three-photon absorption, a situation that exists, for example, in polydiacetylenes. With the introduction of a coupling function between two- and three-photon absorption, we find a quasi-analytic expression for open aperture Z-scan traces. We make a comparison of the analytic solutions with numerical solutions in detail, showing that they are in good agreement. This theoretical result allows us to easily identify and determine simultaneously the two- and three-photon absorption coefficients from the open aperture Z-scan traces.

Abstract:We present a precise data processing method, in the Z-scan experiments using a Gaussian beam and trimmed Airy beam, for directly extracting nonlinear refraction from the closed aperture Z-scan trace with the aid of the open aperture Z-scan trace when the materials exhibit nonlinear refraction and nonlinear absorption simultaneously. This method is still applicable when the nonlinear absorption is dominant and the closed aperture Z-scan curve degenerates into a single valley configuration, which is a salient advantage over other methods. In addition, we give gracefully empirical formulas with very high precision, which have good practicability for characterizing the optical nonlinearities of materials by use of the Gaussian beam and trimmed Airy beam Z-scan technique, respectively.

Abstract:For the nonlinear materials, not only the ratio ρ of the imaginary to the real part of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility but also the finite aperture size S exert a great influence upon the appearance of a peak on the Z-scan transmittance curve. This article investigates the ρ dependence of the critical aperture size Sc, which determines whether a transmittance peak occurs or not, and the dependence of the critical value ρc on the parameter S for the thin-sample and low irradiance limits with a Gaussian beam. These results may be applied to the adjustment of experimental conditions at all times and the assessment of the correctness of data analysis. The experiment with CS 2 seeking the critical value Sc has verified above results.

Abstract:By treating laser-induced optical Kerr nonlinearity as a noninstantaneous decaying process, we present the pulse-duration-dependent Z-scan analytical expressions for an arbitrary aperture and an arbitrary nonlinear magnitude. This theory has the capacity to characterize the third-order nonlinear refraction induced by a laser pulse with its temporal duration being much longer than or comparable to the recovery time of the nonlinear effect. Through Z-scan measurements at different pulse durations, the nonlinear refractive coefficient and the recovery time could be determined unambiguously and simultaneously. Furthermore, the theory can be utilized to confirm whether the measured optical Kerr nonlinearity is instantaneous or noninstantaneous with respect to the given pulse duration. Abstract:The nc-Si/SiNx multi-quantum well(MQW)was prepared by RF magnetron sputtering technique and thermal annealing.The sample was tested by low-angle XRD,Raman spectrometry and absorption spectrometry,and its structure and optical properties were studyed.Nonlinear optical properties of nc-Si/SiNx MQW were probed by a Z-Scan Technique.The experimental results show that the nonlinear refractive index of the sample is a negative value and the nonlinear absorption is two-photon absorption.After calculating,it is obtained that χ(3) of the sample is 7.50 10-8esu,the value of nc-Si/SiNx MQW is 4 orders of magnitude higher than that of bulk Silicon.The nonlinear mechanism of the material was discussed.The enhancement of nonlinear refractive index is mainly attributed to the enhancement of quantum confinement.

Abstract:In this article, a novel measurement approach of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) with bi-beam was presented in order to improve the sensitivity and anti-disturbance capability of intensity-modulated SPR sensor. The relation curves between reflected light intensity and sample refractive index were established at different incident angles and gold film thickness, based on theoretical calculation and numerical simulation of this new method. Compared with the traditional intensity-modulated technology, studies indicates that bi-beam approach has better sensitivity and broader measuring range when the incident angle difference of the two beams is equal to 5 degree and gold film thickness is in the range of 40 to 50 nm. The noiseproof feature and stability of the sensor system are greatly improved with the application of light intensity difference technology.

Abstract:By using the Adomian decomposition method, we present the transmitted optical intensity of a nonlinear medium with the concurrence of saturable absorption (SA) and two-photon absorption (TPA) processes. We obtain the analytical expression of the open-aperture Z-scan and investigate the interplay between SA and TPA in the Z-scan trace. Through Z-scan measurements at different levels of laser intensities, both the saturable intensity and TPA coefficient could be obtained quickly yet unambiguously.

Abstract:The third order optical nonlinearities of SnO 2 nanoparticles were studied in a nonresonant region by Z scan technique with 18 ns, 0.53 μm pulses from a Q switched Nd∶YAG laser. The sign and magnitude of the third order nonlinear susceptibility χ (3)  and two photon absorption coefficient β, et al., of SnO 2 nanoparticles with different size were obtained. The experimental results were discussed in terms of the quantum confined effect.
