Shear Design Method for Non-Prismatic Concrete Beams Reinforced Using W-FRP

Abstract:Flexible fabric formworks and bespoke Wound Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (W-FRP) cages have been proposed to address the difficulties of constructing geometrically optimised concrete structures with minimised material consumptions. However, the existing codes of practice for FRP reinforced concrete structures are not able to provide accurate shear behaviour predictions, resulting in potential premature anchorage failure. This paper presents a revised shear design approach for non-prismatic beams reinforced with W-FRP based on the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT), which considers the non-prismatic geometries, geometrical nonlinearity and internal load redistributions. The revised shear design approach is calibrated against previous fabric-formed T beam tests and parametric analyses are conducted to minimise the material usage of the previous T-beams. The validity of the shear design approach is further confirmed with a new T-beam test. The new test shows that the T beam designed with the MCFT based approach failed in the expected flexural failure mode with an ultimate capacity of 245 kN applied load. The predictions can effectively model the bar force development of the inclined flexural reinforcement with a Normalised Root Mean Square Error (NRSME) of 4.4%. The proposed shear design method improved the prediction accuracy of flexural bar force at ultimate capacity by 40% compared to the codified shear design method. By addressing the shear contributions of inclined flexural reinforcement and required anchorage strength, further applications of this novel flexibly formed beams with optimised geometries are expected to achieve material consumption reduction and hence lower carbon emissions from concrete structures.

Abstract:The paper experimentally investigates the effects of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening arrangements on the failure mechanisms of CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams without stirrups under impact loading, as well as the fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) contribution to shear strength. Five beams were tested under static loads and 10 beams under impact loads. The failure modes and the shear mechanism of CFRP-strengthened RC beams under impact loading were obtained. The failure process can be divided into two stages: the shear failure of the local part of the beams adjacent to the midspan section under impact loading; and the subsequent shear failure of the near-support section under reaction force. The test results showed that the arrangement and amount of CFRP as well as impact energy played an important role in the beam dynamic behavior: The CFRP contribution to shear strength at the first stage was discussed and verified by the experimental shear strength considering the strain rate and stress wave propagation effects. A dynamic failure criterion of RC beams was eventually proposed to assess the failure of FRP-strengthened RC beams under impact loading.

Abstract:Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites, Ahead of Print. Hybrid reinforcement of steel and fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars can provide a balanced performance between strength, ductility, and durability for the concrete structures. Thus, this study evaluates the shear performance of hybrid Basalt-FRP/steel-RC beams without shear reinforcement. A total of twelve RC beams were cast and tested under four-point loading to study the influence of reinforcement type, reinforcement ratio of longitudinal bars and axial stiffness between FRP and steel ratio, [math] on the shear performance of the concrete beams. The test results were analyzed in terms of crack patterns, load-midspan deflection, load-crack width relationships, and shear strength of the tested beams. In addition, the experimental results were compared with the theoretical results obtained from various design codes and guidelines. Moreover, a finite element (FE) model was created, and the experimental results were used for validation of the FE model. The test results revealed that the beam specimens designed with similar effective reinforcement ratio exhibits comparable shear strength nevertheless the tensile reinforcement used. Experimental test results demonstrated that using hybrid bars increased the shear capacity of the beams by 11% compared to steel bars. Furthermore, the energy absorption of the hybrid-RC beams was enhanced by 16% compared to FRP-RC beams. By elevating the [math] ratio from 1.25 to 2.44, both the shear strength and energy absorption improved by approximately 10%. Notably, there was a significant decrease in the deflection and crack width of the hybrid-RC beams in comparison to the FRP-RC beams. The design codes ACI440.11-22 and CSA S806-12 displayed accurate enough estimates of the shear strength, while JSCE-1997 showed a conservative result.

Abstract:Debonding failure is the main failure mode in flexurally strengthened reinforced concrete beams by externally bonded or near surface mounted fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. It is believed that FRP debonding will be initiated if the shear stress on the concrete-FRP interface reaches the tensile strength of concrete. However, it was found through experimental and analytical studies that the debonding mechanism of FRP composites has the potential of shear failure in combination with debonding failure. Moreover, the shear failure probably influences the debonding failure. Presently, there are very little experimental and analytical studies to investigate the influence of shear resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) beam on FRP debonding failure. The current study investigates and analyzes the effect of shear resistance on FRP debonding failure based on test results. The analytical results show that the shear resistance of RC beam has a great effect on flexural debonding load-carrying capacity of FRP-strengthened RC beam. The influence of shear resistance on flexural debonding load-carrying capacity must be fully considered in flexural strengthening design of RC beams.

Abstract:The paper proposes a new type of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) shear reinforcements for reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The specimens are shear reinforced with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer mesh fabric (CFRP-MF) configuration rather than traditional steel stirrups. The shear behaviors of the 15 concrete beams reinforced in shear with CFRP-MF configuration or with/without steel stirrups (as control specimens) was investigated in this paper. The variables of the investigation include shear span-depth ratio (a/d = 1.0, 2.5 and 3.5) and the shear reinforcement ratio of CFRP-MF composites (0.036%, 0.067% and 0.097%). The experimental results indicate that the concrete beams reinforced in shear with the CFRP-MF configuration have similar shear behaviors to the corresponding RC control beams reinforced in shear with steel stirrups especially in overall load-deflection relationship, shear strength, and the crack pattern of ultimate state. The predictions of the specimens? shear strength by using shear design provisions in ACI 440.1R-15, CSA S6-14 and CSA S806-12 are examined and compared.

Abstract:AbstractThis paper presents an experimental study on the shear behavior of RC members fully wrapped with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, which are a new type of FRP material characterized by a much larger rupture strain (LRS) compared with conventional FRPs (i.e., made of carbon, glass, and aramid fibers). A total of 10 PET fully-wrapped RC beams, which were designed to fail in shear and with different shear-span to effective-depth ratios, transverse reinforcement ratios and shear strengthening ratios, were tested under 4-point bending loads. The overall load-deflection responses and the shear deformation of the beams as well as the strain development of the transverse steel reinforcement and the FRP jackets were carefully observed. Abstract:The objective of this study is to propose a new model to predict the ultimate shear strength of RC members with and without FRP jacketing. This paper shows that the proposed model can predict the shear strength in the pre-flexural yielding range. The proposed model considers the confinement effect and the stiffness of reinforcement on the shear strength. The enhancement of shear strength by the confinement effect of FRP jacketing and the application of jacketing with a high fracture strain fiber can be predicted by the model. The proposed model shows a good agreement with the testing results.

Abstract:Inheriting excellent corrosion resistance of FRP bars, steel-FRP composite bar (SFCB) has better elastic modulus and ductility, promising to be longitudinal reinforcement for concrete structures in harsh environments. While previous research primarily focused on the flexural behavior of hybrid longitudinal SFCB and FRP stirrups reinforced concrete (hybrid-RC) beams, the study about shear behavior has rarely been reported and valuable experimental observations are limited. The unique mechanical properties of SFCB causes the inapplicability of existing shear design method and the risk of brittle shear failure. Here, a simplified shear design method is proposed for hybrid-RC beams by analytical investigation and the shear behavior of hybrid-RC beams is inves-tigated experimentally. Results show that SFCB exhibits similar transverse shear behavior to steel bar. Compared with steel bars reinforced concrete beams, hybrid-RC beams based on the proposed design method have better shear performance including same failure modes, similar deflection, narrower shear crack, and higher shear capacity, due to the post-yielding stiffness of SFCB. Furthermore, a modified calculation method of the shear capacity for hybrid-RC beams is proposed, exhibiting great feasibility and accuracy. These results can provide valuable experimental observations of shear behavior and promote the development of shear design tactics for hybrid-RC beams.

Abstract:This paper investigated the shear behavior of carbon/glass hybrid fiber reinforced polymer (HFRP) bars reinforced concrete beams without stirrups. Seven beams with different span-to-depth ratios were tested under four-point loading. Results showed that the span-to-depth ratio had a significant effect on the shear behavior of the beams. According to the test data in this study and published relevant literature, a database containing 468 specimens was established to conduct an in-depth study of the factors that affect the shear capacity of FRP reinforced concrete members without stirrups. By comparing the predicted shear capacity of specimens according to the existing specifications and models with the experimental results in the database, it was found that the predicted results were relatively discrete. The factors influencing shear capacity considered by the specifications and proposed models are inconsistent, and the influence of the span-to-depth ratio was not taken into account. On this basis, a more comprehensive calculation method that considers the influence of span-to-depth ratio was proposed to predict the shear capacity of FRP reinforced concrete beams and presented better prediction results within the experimental.

Abstract:In order to solve the defect of insufficient performance of the single fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) bars. The basalt fibers and glass fibers are prepared into the basalt-glass fibers hybrid FRP composite bars (B/G hybrid FRP bars) in this paper. The failure mechanism of basalt-glass fibers hybrid FRP composite bars is analyzed by the finite element method. The main failure factors include not only fiber breakage but also the separation of the interface between the two fibers. The mechanical properties of basalt-glass fibers hybrid FRP composite bars in the alkaline environment are predicted by simulation. The tensile properties, elongation properties, pseudo ductility stage length, and yield stress reduction of basalt-glass fibers hybrid FRP composite bars under different fiber volume ratios are investigated by tensile tests. The results show that when the volume ratio of glass fiber to basalt fiber is 7:3, the ultimate strain reaches 2.57%. When the volume ratio of glass fiber to basalt fiber is 9:1, the ultimate strain reaches 3.06%, with a difference of 0.49%. In addition, the yield stress reduction stage in basalt-glass fibers hybrid FRP composite bars is also affected by the volume ratio of hybrid fibers. When the volume ratio of glass fibers to basalt fibers is 9:1 and 7:3, the difference in ultimate tensile strength and the difference in yield stress reduction stage of the two are 185.85 MPa and 145.09 MPa, respectively. In addition, the optimal volume ratio range suitable for different situations is summarized in the study. When glass fiber accounts for 68.9–100% of the total integral number of basalt-glass fibers hybrid FRP composite bars, the tensile and extension properties of basalt-glass fibers hybrid FRP composite bars have different degrees of change.

Abstract:In practice, the prestressing is difficult to apply to achieve shear reinforcement of reinforced concrete (RC) beams due to the limited operating space used for installing mechanical tensioning equipment. So, how to efficiently introduce prestressing into RC beams is a practical problem. In this study, the authors utilized the recovery effect of shape memory alloys (SMA) wires to successfully introduce prestressing into RC beams and externally bonded with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets, forming a FRP/SMA composite shear reinforcement technology. After that, shear behavior of RC beams strengthened with FRP/SMA composites was investigated by a series of experiments. In order to further illustrate the effect of FRP/SMA composite shear reinforcement on RC beams, other reinforcement materials, such as SMA wires and FRP sheets, have also been separately applied in shear reinforcement experiments. Moreover, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) are respectively applied to prepare FRP/SMA composites. For beams strengthened with FRP/SMA composites, the prestressing generated by the recovery effect of SMA wires can effectively suppress the formation of diagonal cracks in RC beams. The ultimate load and the corresponding displacement of strengthened beams significantly increased due to the constraint effect of FRP on the propagation of shear cracks. The shear capacity of CFRP/SMA composites strengthening beams was higher than that of BFRP/SMA composites strengthening beams, as CFRP/SMA composites better limited the propagation of cracks. Based on the test results, an analytical model has been proposed to predict the shear capacity of strengthened beams, and its effectiveness has been confirmed through comparison with experimental results.

Abstract:The design of FRP profile-concrete composite sections, including beams and decks, is usually governed by the shear strength of the FRP profiles. However, analytical methods that can precisely predict the shear capacity of the composite sections have not been well developed, because there is lack of knowledge of the FRP-concrete composite action and distribution of shear stress along the FRP. This paper investigates the shear behaviors of FRP-concrete composite sections and develops formulae to predict the shear capacity of the composite sections. First, flexural tests of three FRP-concrete composite beams were conducted to investigate the shear failure mode and interface behaviors. All the beams failed in FRP shear fracture along horizontal direction. Then, push-out tests were used to determine the slip property for the FRP-concrete interface which reveals that FRP stay-in-place form and steel bolts can ensure full and partial composite action, respectively. Based on the experimental study, closed-form equations to compute the maximum shear stress are derived and validated against experimental data in this paper and literature. Finally, simple yet reliable equations of shear capacity are derived and recommended for engineers to design the FRP-concrete composite sections.

Abstract:Interlaminar shear behaviour has been investigated for basalt-, glass- and carbon fibre reinforced polymer (BFRP/GFRP/GFRP) bars in seawater and sea sand concrete (SWSSC), using an accelerated test. The investigation includes the influence of different short beam shear test methods and the effect of test span-to-diameter ratios on interlaminar shear strength. The degradation mechanism of FRP bars in SWSSC solutions has been characterised using moisture absorption and desorption tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Abstract:To study the shear behaviors of jointed rocks reinforced by basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars and steel–FRP composite bars (SFCBs), we conduct laboratory tests and numerical simulations to analyze the shear strength, shear stiffness, energy dissipation, and bolt failure modes. Our results show that the shear stiffness of the BFRP bolted specimen is lower than that of the specimens bolted by steel bars and SFCBs, but the residual shear strength is higher. SFCB-reinforced jointed rock has the highest peak shear strength, and its residual strength is similar to that of the steel bar bolted specimen. The total energy absorbed by the BFRP bolted specimen is comparable to that absorbed by the steel bolted specimen. When the bolt inclination angle is 60°, the shear strength of the BFRP bar bolted specimens is higher than that of the steel reinforced one. The failure characteristics of BFRP bar bolted rocks can be categorized as resin matrix fracture, resin matrix and fiber shear, and fracture of resin matrix and rocks. The failure modes of the SFCB divided into surface FRP failure and steel bending. Based on numerical results, BFRP bars have larger axial force than conventional bolts, but lower shear stress. The axial stress of the BFRP bar increases as the bolt inclination angle decreases. Moreover, the BFRP bar is more likely to cause shear cracks at the interface between the rock and the bolt.

Abstract:Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinfrocement has been proposed to be reinforcement in ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) so as to mitigate/avoid the post-peak strain softening behavior of UHPC under tension and to reduce the fiber dosage used in UHPC. In this paper, tubular beams based on FRP grid-reinforced UHPC composites (referred to as FRP-UHPC compoistes or simply FUC) have been proposed and ten FUC tubular beams were tested under shear. Effects of the shear span ratio, the fiber type (polyethylene (PE) fibers and steel fibers) on the shear behavior of FUC tubular beams were investigated. Results reveal that the proposed FUC tubular beams have excellent ultimate strength and a ductile behavior under shear. A theoretical model based on the truss-arch theory is proposed for predicting the shear capacity FUC tubular beams, and its accuracy is verified against the test results.

Abstract:This paper presents the experimental data and model's predictions on the shear performance of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP)-reinforced concrete (FC) beams with E-glass FRP (GFRP) longitudinal bars and carbon FRP mesh fabric (CFRP-MF) transverse stirrups. One reinforced concrete (RC) beam and six FC beams with various CFRP stirrup arrangements were designed and loaded to shear failure in a four-point loading mode with two shear-span to depth ratios (λ = 1.5 and 2.5). The shear bearing capacity of CFRP-MF stirrups in the beam was comparatively analyzed and predicted with some existing specification formulas. The results show that the FC beams have equivalent shear resistance to the RC beam with equal strength stirrups, and that the shear contribution of CFRP-MF stirrups to FC beam's shear capacity is 37.8 % higher than that of steel stirrups in RC beam under λ = 1.5. Comparing with the FC beam with CFRP strip fabric (CFRP-SF) stirrups, the FC beams with CFRP-MF stirrups have better abilities to suppress the development of diagonal cracks and the joint reinforcement in CFRP-MF can further increase the beam's shear capacity. The shear strengths provided by CFRP-MF stirrups in FC beams were derived from experimental data and compared with the predictions calculated by code formulas. Finally, considering the differences between the experimental and calculated results, a modified shear capacity model based on the formula in GB 50608–2020 was constructed by taking the influences of crack inclination angle and longitudinal connection CFRP strips into account. The effectiveness of the proposed new model in predicting the shear capacity of GFRP-reinforced concrete beams with CFRP-MF stirrups is verified using the test data from this paper and some existing studies.

Abstract:The utilization of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) rods to strengthen concrete beam structures can enhance their ultimate load-carrying capacity and mitigate steel reinforcement corrosion damage. However, a prominent issue with BFRP (Basalt FRP) rod reinforcement in flexural members is its lack of yielding behavior, which can lead to catastrophic brittle failure without any preventive measures. Therefore, this study aims to enhance the ductility of concrete by introducing a specific quantity of basalt fiber, thereby reducing the hazards associated with the brittle failure of this composite structure. This experiment focuses on two main variables: the inclusion rate of basalt fiber and the type of longitudinal reinforcement and conducts four-point static bending tests on four BFRP bar BFRC (Basalt-Fiber-Reinforced Concrete) beams. Results showed that the inclusion of fibers resulted in a delayed initiation of vertical cracks and a reduction in the severity of beam failure, thereby enhancing structural safety and reliability. When the basalt fiber inclusion rate was 0.2%, the cracking load and ultimate load of the beam increased by 18.42% and 8.27%, respectively. Furthermore, compared to traditional RC beams, BFRP bar BFRC beams showed a 58.27% increase in ultimate load capacity. A cracking moment calculation model for BFRP beams is proposed and subsequently validated through the utilization of existing experimental data.

Abstract:A recent innovation in shear strengthening of reinforced concrete beams is to externally bond fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Many studies have been undertaken on this strengthening technique. These studies have established clearly that such strengthened beams fail in shear mainly in one of the two modes: FRP rupture and FRP debonding, and have led to preliminary design proposals. This paper is concerned with the development of a simple, accurate, and rational design proposal for the shear capacity of FRP-strengthened beams which fail by FRP rupture. To this end, existing design proposals are reviewed, and their efficiencies highlighted. A new strength model is then developed, which recognizes the fundamental characteristics of FRP. The model is validated against experimental data collected from the existing literature. Finally, a new design proposal is presented.

Abstract:Steel corrosion is a significant threat to the durability of traditional reinforced concrete (RC) members. An effective method of counteracting steel corrosion is replacing steel reinforcement bars in concrete with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars. However, the FRP bar resists being bent into a stirrup because of its in-situ manufacturing techniques. Moreover, the tensile strength of the bent portion of an FRP stirrup is significantly lower than that of the longer straight bar because of stress concentration. This paper presents an experimental and analytical study on the shear behavior of concrete beams reinforced with a carbon FRP mesh fabric (CFRP-MF) as shear reinforcement for RC members. A new CFRP-MF, which was woven in vertical and parallel directions, as an alternative to the traditional methods used for shear reinforcement, was investigated. Six concrete beams were cast with CFRP-MF as the shear reinforcements, and three concrete beams were cast as controls to investigate the shear behavior of the novel composite beams. The configuration of CFRP-MF and the overlapping condition of the intersection point were the research variables. The test results indicated that these novel composite beams have similar shear capacities and ductilities to traditional concrete beams with steel stirrups. The predictions of the shear strength of the specimens using shear design provisions in ACI 440.1R-15, CSA S6-19 and CSA S806-12 are examined and compared. The finite element method was used to compare the experimental results with numerical values, and the percentage error in all scenarios was lower than 8%.

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) were used for the strengthening. Both strain and deformation were measured. Concrete crack development, crack distance and crack width were observed as well. The results show that RC beams strengthened by CFRP or GFRP can increase the shear bearing capacity of the beams, but has little effect on the beam stiffness.
