Abstract:To realize type selection and optimum configuration of grading functional units for numerical control (NC) machine tools, a modular configuration design method for NC machine tools based on multi-domain mutual-use (MDMU) is put forward. The modules are defined by mechanical-electrical-hydraulic characteristics pool of the functional units of the machine tools. The product partial order templates are constructed by the membership and gradation relations of the modules. The key module, related module, virtual module are defined to represent the priority and significance of various modules. The instantiation rules of the modules are defined by type selection and optimum configuration constraints of components and parts. The correlation between two modules is reckoned by fuzzy membership of comparable characteristics. The key modules are selected by Karhunen-Loeve transformation. The product tree is reconstructed by multi-class support vector machine (SVM). The module instantiation is enhanced by layout design. The mutual-use of parts which are difficult to be reused directly is realized by part structure variation. The modular configuration design based on MDMU is finally accomplished by getting modular bill of material (MBOM) and assembly from the design requirements. The modular configuration design prototype is developed and applied to the design of the HMS series horizontal machining center. The test results proves that the current design of NC machine tools is extended to "layout domain-adapting domain-part variation domain" MDMU modular configuration design by "characteristics-modules-templates" hierarchy mapping, so it expands the mutual-use scope, decreases the ratio of non-standard parts between the product families with different layouts. It helps to improve efficiency and quality of NC machine tools design. © 2011 Journal of Mechanical Engineering.

Abstract:A BOM description language DBDL(Dynamic Bill of Material Description Language) is presented to form the dynamic BOM for mass customized products.Application of dynamic BOM in integration of PDM and ERP systems in mass customized enterprise is described and some interfaces of developed system based on PDM are illustrated.The result from demonstration case shows that dynamic BOM can efficiently integrate the PDM and ERP systems in mass customized enterprise and promote the application level of enterprise information tools.

Finally, three methods of the modular design of mechanical products are summarized.

Abstract:In a high-mix low volume production environment, time to market is a key factor. However, one bottleneck lies in the often times manual parametrization of machines for new or modified designs. A truly flexible manufacturing environment therefore requires a continuous data flow from the design stages to the shop floor. This paper presents a concept for the automated parameterization of machines at a large automotive plant. Therefore, this paper initially discusses the results of a stakeholder analysis. The stakeholders comprise of different departments related to the product design and manufacturing processes. The requirements resulting from the interviews conducted with the stakeholders are grouped and ordered by priority. Secondly a general architecture for the control interface is presented. It includes multiple submodules, which model the continuous data flow between the departments and the production systems. The first main step of the data flow is the transformation of the information which is presented in various styles depending on the source departments to structured and standardized data. Thereafter machine parameters are generated automatically by a submodule using the structured input data and inference rules. Finally, the architecture supports the automatic transfer of the machine readable output data to the assembly line. To test the architecture a prototype comprising of more than 100 robots in a live production environment is implemented. It allows for a continuous data flow from the design and productions planning department to the robots. This enables a flexible process control, which up to today has supported the fast roll out of more than 100 new product variants. In contrast to the conventional manual setup of the machines for operation, the prototype was able to show that the monetary and time expenditure could be reduced by 95 percent.

Abstract:According to the state-of-the-arts in informatization of automobile manufacturing enterprises,a BOM data management information system was designed and implemented.The business model was proposed focusing on integrating,managing,controlling,sharing and utilizing the core data based on the product BOM.A multi-view BOM for the automobile manufacturing process was constructed using the business model.After analyzing the product configuration management and construction of the multi-view BOM,the general technical scheme was designed and the system was implemented.The application of the system in the Dongfeng Motor Corporation shows good effects,such as integrating the BOM management platforms distributed in different departments,improving the products development efficiency,satisfying the individuating demands of customers and solving the key problems in the life cycle of products.

Abstract:：Product modularization is one of the key technologies to realize mass customization, and it is also the foundation of industry 4.0, which can effectively support intelligent manufacturing.The traditional method of product modularization relies on experienced designers and takes a lot of time.And with the increasing number of customized products, the product changes faster and faster, this traditional method is more and more difficult to adapt for the development needs of the current situation.To solve these problems, some intelligent methods in product modularization are proposed, including: product name ontology establishment, product module partition optimization, module generalization and standardization, product main structure establishment etc.By using new generation of artificial intelligence technologies such as swarm intelligence, big data analysis and man-machine coordination, a large number of product module data, user order data and designers' behavior data of using product module are analyzed.By mining the similarity and relevance information such as product name relationship and module relationship hidden in the data, product name ontology, product module division, product common module, module main model and product main structure are determined.As a result, rapid large-scale product modularization is achieved, and the cost and time of product modularization are reduced.Key words：product modularity；modular design；intelligent manufacturing；intelligent modular design；a new generation of artificial intelligence

Abstract:To solve the problem of BOM management among mechanical product design, manufacturing and stock of correlative chains in the computer integrated manufacturing system, the characteristic and evolvement process of design BOM, manufacturing BOM and stock BOM was analyzed, and he data sharing and information integration were also studied. According to the structure characteristic of three kinds of BOM the mechanical product BOM management model was established, and the realization method of BOM management was given. Taking injection moulding machine for an example, its BOM management system was developed, and the fast conversation of the all kinds of BOM were realized, proving the correctness of management method and the practicability of BOM conversation technology.

Abstract:A product family comprises some products similar in function, structure or technology. Generic Bills of Materials(GBOM) describes the composing of the configurable and modularized product family including all standard parts and components. GBOM was used and extended as a unified framework for qualitatively representing the structure of its supply chain. Based on this qualitative model, by setting the different weights on the cost and time for simulating the actual production policy, and defining the total costs and Lead Time of the supply chain as optimization target, the mathematical model was built to optimize the supply chain. Further, the optimization model was denoted by the directed weighted graph. Then, the method of dynamical planning was used to obtain the supply chain optimal solution. In the end, an instance was provided for illustrating the model's feasibility and validity.

Abstract:As an advanced manufacturing model, cloud manufacturing(CMfg) has made great progress in recent years. The concept of CMfg has been introduced to many industries. With the growing diversity of products, the complexity of cloud manufacturing service encapsulation is also increasing. To solve the problem of product-oriented service standardized encapsulation, the Bills of Standard Manufacturing Service(BOSS) has been proposed. It can systematically solve the problem of deployment, registration and management of cloud manufacturing services in the whole product life cycle. In this paper, based on the service ontology model, we proposed an automatic perfecting service information method of BOSS using the focused crawler technology. Combined with the case study, we verified the feasibility and effectiveness of this method. Finally, the application framework of BOSS in the cloud manufacturing system is further discussed.

Abstract:To satisfy a rapidly changing market and various requirements of customer demand, many automotive assembly systems are designed to increase flexibility. One way to achieve this is to have a system making multiple products through split and merge. This paper presents an iterative approach to model such a kind of. flexible manufacturing system with common lines and dedicated branches to process different products. The mathematical procedures, associated with the justification of convergence and accuracy, are provided. A case study is presented to illustrate the applicability of the method.

Abstract:The various needs of a wide variety of users result in a wide variety of forms and definitions of a bill of material (BOM). A flexible definition of BOM based on dynamic modeling was used to analyze its data and characteristics and the two-dimensional relativity between product data and the BOM. An object model flexibly defining BOM was built using the object-oriented method. A specific object model of BOM was dynamically built by describing the entity classes and relationship classes for various user conditions with five meta-classes. The method has been implemented in a project. The result shows that the method can satisfactorily meet the users' customization and dynamic modification requirements for the definition of the BOM.

Abstract:Bill of Material(BOM)was the key of integrating PDM with ERP. Due to the features of mass customization in automobile part company, there are many obstacles in the integration of PDM and ERP. The mapping principles of BOM was summarized and the specializations of BOM for mass customized products were discussed in detail. Based on these theories, Dynamic Bill of Material Description Language(DBDL) was presented to describe BOM for mass customized products. Applications of dynamic BOM in integration of PDM and ERP were described in relation to a typical mass customized product. The results shows that this method can integrate the PDM and ERP of the automobile part company efficiently.

Abstract:One of the toughest challenges for production management and logistics control for Chinese manufacture is how to remove the information gap between planning and manufacturing control/execution, which may cause order commit delay or too much inventory. The objective of the research is to design the production logistics system by integrating Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP-II)/PUSH and Just in Time (JIT)/PULL control strategy in a Chinese automobile accessory manufacturing system. Firstly, the business process of the production logistics is reengineered and the Bill of Material (BOM) is designed based on the analysis of automobile accessory production characteristics. Then a hybrid PUSH/PULL control strategy based on BOM is put forward to design the production logistics system, where its overall architecture are given out. Thirdly, three layers framework of a production logistics system is designed and implemented with the computer technology. The implementation of this system at a Chinese automobile accessory manufacture shows that, it can simplify the production plan; balance the shop floor production and Work-in-Process (WIP), so as to raise the production logistics management level.

Abstract:In order to develop the information system that meets the requirements of ISO/TS16949:2002 quality control system,the reference models of typical processes in TS16949 quality control system were established and analyzed from a information-technology perspective,the process modules were established according to the similarity in and between the processes,and then the connection methods among them were discussed.A software development methodology based on process modules was proposed where the DFD modules,ERD views and reusable software modules were designed to relate to process modules,and how to assembly reusable software modules was also discussed.The process modularization approach with supporting software development was given.An information system supporting TS16949 was successfully realized in a quick and standardized way with the method,and it effectively helps to run the quality control system of an automobile motor manufacturer.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to present a measuring approach of process flexibility under bill of material (BOM) constraints. For the manufacturing system that consists of multiple assembly lines, this paper differentiates process flexibility under BOM constraints into two hierarchical and highly interrelated levels: the assembly line level and the system level. By interpreting process flexibility as the ability to shift capacity among different parts or product types in the face of external and/or internal changes, approaches for measuring process flexibility on the two levels are proposed. Results of simulation experiments illustrate that the developed measures are effective and widely applicable to real manufacturing systems. Since the proposed measures synthesise the multiple capabilities of the manufacturing system and the impacts of BOM constraints of products, they lay the foundation of developing general guidelines for improving flexibility of the manufacturing system.

Abstract:For the manufacturing system that consists of multiple assembly lines, this paper investigates the method of improving its process flexibility under bill of material (BOM) constraints. Based on the flexibility measurement developed in part I, generic characteristics of the capability configuration of assembly lines that ensure it more flexible are first investigated on two hierarchical and highly interrelated levels: the assembly line level and the system level. These characteristics are termed 'structural properties' of process flexibility under BOM constraints, which are valuable because they provide an effective way of improving flexibility of the manufacturing system through investing in limited operational flexibility of machines in the assembly lines. According to the obtained structural properties, guidelines for improving process flexibility on the two levels are then developed. The proposed guidelines can help the manager of a manufacturing system to make effective decisions on flexibility improvement without much computation effort. Results of simulation experiments illustrate that the proposed structural properties and guidelines are effective and widely applicable to real manufacturing systems.

Abstract:In the view of the mass customization several manufacturing systems including the modular production system are compared in this paper. The characteristics, design method and application foreground of the modular production system are analysed. The research results showed that the modular production system with higher productivity and better flexibility, lower investment and higher benefit is much suitable to the Chinese situation.
