Abstract:The rotating detonation engine (RDE) is a kind of new-concept engines for ultra-high-efficiency propulsion and power generation. In this work we simulate the three-dimensional (3D) flow fields in the hydrogen-air RDE to discuss the mechanism, possible control, and performance effect of the operation mode regarding the detonation wave number, i.e., how many rotating detonation waves (RDWs) exist inside the RDE combustor. Different ignition number along with some auxiliary control operations are implemented to obtain RDEs with 1, 2, and 4 RDWs, respectively. Further control operations are conducted on the injection stagnation pressure and injection area ratio to explore various flow behaviors corresponding to different operation modes of the RDE. Different control operations correspond to self-regulating processes with different amplitudes of fluctuations. The increase in injection stagnation pressure brings about the most violent self-regulating process with significant fluctuations whilst it is very smooth when injection area ratio is augmented. The operation mode of an RDE can be changed by employing control operations. Control operations involving changes in the injection stagnation pressure and injection area ratio, along with subsequent self-regulating processes, facilitate the initiation of a new detonation front by providing favorable conditions for reactant accumulation and shock wave origination. It is confirmed that detonation velocity decreases as detonation wave number increases. Furthermore, it is observed that detonation velocity deficit and specific impulse increases as detonation wave number increases. Detonation velocity decreases while thrust and the specific impulse increases. The commonly held belief that the detonation wave speed and engine performance are tightly coupled and increase or decrease together is challenged. Moreover, the injection area ratio is found to be a key factor for the RDE to achieve a positive pressure gain. Besides, a new concept called unconfined rate is proposed to help discussing the criterion of height value for the RDW. Based on it the critical height value of an RDW is adjusted. These adjusted criteria accommodate experimental results that are inconsistent with the old critical value. A new equivalent available pressure (EAP) evaluation method EAPh based on the total enthalpy is also introduced and is preliminarily discussed in this work.
