Abstract:ABSTRACT There is an implicit assumption in most work that the parameters calibrated based on observations remain valid for future climatic conditions. However, this might not be true due to parameter instability. This paper investigates the uncertainty and transferability of parameters in a hydrological model under climate change. Parameter transferability is investigated with three parameter sets identified for different climatic conditions, which are: wet, intermediate and dry. A parameter set based on the baseline period (1961–1990) is also investigated for comparison. For uncertainty analysis, a k-simulation set approach is proposed instead of employing the traditional optimization method which uses a single best-fit parameter set. The results show that the parameter set from the wet sub-period performs the best when transferred into wet climate condition, while the parameter set from the baseline period is the most appropriate when transferred into dry climate condition. The largest uncertainty of simulated daily high flows for 2011–2040 is from the parameter set trained in the dry sub-period, while that of simulated daily medium and low flows lies in the parameter set from the intermediate calibration sub-period. For annual changes in the future period, the uncertainty with the parameter set from the intermediate sub-period is the largest, followed by the wet sub-period and dry sub-period. Compared with high and medium flows/runoffs, the uncertainty of low flows/runoffs is much smaller for both simulated daily flows and annual runoffs. For seasonal runoffs, the largest uncertainty is from the intermediate sub-period, while the smallest is from the dry sub-period. Apart from that, the largest uncertainty can be observed for spring runoffs and the lowest one for autumn runoffs. Compared with the traditional optimization method, the k-simulation set approach shows many more advantages, particularly being able to provide uncertainty information to decision support for watershed management under climate change. Abstract:Abstract. Projections of streamflow, particularly of extreme flows under climate change are essential for future water resources management and development of adaptation strategies to floods and droughts. However, these projections are subject to uncertainties originating from different sources. In this study, we explore the possible changes in future streamflow, particularly for high and low flows, under climate change in the Qu River basin, East China. ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) is employed to quantify the contribution of different uncertainty sources from RCPs (Representative Concentration Pathways), GCMs (Global Climate Models) and internal climate variability, using an ensemble of four RCP scenarios, nine GCMs and 1,000 simulated realizations of each model-scenario combination by SDRM-MCREM (a stochastic daily rainfall model coupling a Markov chain model with a rainfall event model). The results show that annual mean flow and high flows are projected to increase and low flows will probably decrease in 2041–2070 (2050s) and 2071–2100 (2080s) relative to the historical period 1971–2000, suggesting a higher risk of floods and droughts in the future in the Qu River basin, especially for the late 21st century. Uncertainty in mean flows is mostly attributed to GCM uncertainty. For high flows and low flows, internal climate variability and GCM uncertainty are two major uncertainty sources for the 2050s and 2080s, while for the 2080s, the effect of RCP uncertainty is becoming more pronounced, particularly for low flows. The findings in this study can help water managers to get a better knowledge and understanding of streamflow projections and support decision making on adaptions to changing climate under uncertainty in the Qu River basin.

Abstract:This paper aims to investigate the uncertainty in simulated extreme low and high flows originating from hydrological model structure and parameters. To this end, three different rainfall-runoff models, namely GR4J, HBV and Xinanjiang, are applied to two subbasins of Qiantang River basin, eastern China. The Generalised Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation approach is used for estimating the uncertainty of the three models due to parameter values, henceforth referred as parameter uncertainty. Uncertainty in simulated extreme flows is evaluated by means of the annual maximum discharge and mean annual 7-day minimum discharge. The results show that although the models have good performance for the daily flows, the uncertainty in the extreme flows could not be neglected. The uncertainty originating from parameters is larger than uncertainty due to model structure. The parameter uncertainty of the extreme flows increases with the observed discharge. The parameter uncertainty in both the extreme high flows and the extreme low flows is the largest for the HBV model and the smallest for the Xinanjiang model. It is noted that the extreme low flows are mostly underestimated by all models with optimum parameter sets for both subbasins. The largest underestimation is from Xinanjiang model. Therefore it is not reliable enough to use only one set of the parameters to make the prediction and carrying out the uncertainty study in the extreme discharge simulation could give an overall picture for the planners.
Impact of climate change on hydrology of upper reaches of Qiantang River Basin, East China

Abstract:The hydrological cycle has been substantially influenced by climate change and human activities. It is therefore of utmost importance to analyze the impact of climate change on hydrology, particularly on a regional scale, in order to understand potential future changes of water resources and water-related disaster, and provide support for regional water management. However, during the evaluation of climate change impact on hydrology or water resources, large uncertainty exists. In this paper, the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model is used to investigate the potential impact of climate change on hydrology of the upper reaches of Qiantang River Basin, East China, for the future period 2011-2100. The uncertainty is considered by employing upgraded reliability ensemble averaged GCM climate projections under three emission scenarios A1B, A2 and B1 for three different stages of the future period. These projections are downscaled and used in the hydrological model. Impact of climate change on precipitation, potential evapotranspiraton and river runoff is then investigated. The model calibration and validation outcomes show reasonable performance of the SWAT model. The final results suggest that annual river runoff will likely decrease almost under all emission scenarios and time stages of the future period. Particularly, at Jinhua Station, substantial decrease of annual river runoff can be noticed, indicating less water resource possibly available for the region in future. Simulated monthly patterns show that the largest decrease will likely occur in winter while increases will occur in summer, implying possible more water-related disasters in this region. However, it is also noticed that the change signs/amount could be different under different emission scenarios and time stages, indicating large uncertainty involved in the impact analysis. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Uncertainties in high flows originating from greenhouse gas emissions scenarios, hydrological model structures, and their parameters for the Jinhua River basin, China, were assessed. The baseline (1961-90) and future (2011-40) climates for A1B, A2, and B2 scenarios were downscaled from the general circulation model (GCM) using the Providing Regional Climates for Impacts Studies (PRECIS) regional climate model with a spatial resolution of 50 km x 50 km. Bias-correction methods were applied to the PRECIS-derived temperature and precipitation. The bias-corrected precipitation and temperature were used as inputs for three hydrological models [modele du Genie Rural a 4 parametres Journalier (GR4J), Hydrologiska Byrans Vattenbalansavdelning (HBV), and Xinanjiang] to simulate high flows. The parameter uncertainty was considered and quantified in the hydrological model calibration by means of the generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE) method for each hydrological model for the three emissions scenarios. It was found that, compared with the high flows in the baseline period, the high flows in the future tended to decrease under scenarios A1B, A2, and B2. The largest uncertainty was observed in HBV, and GR4J had the smallest uncertainty. It was found that the major source of uncertainty in this study was from parameters, followed by the uncertainties from the hydrological model structure, and the emissions scenarios have the smallest uncertainty contribution to high flows in this study.
Improved Simulation of Peak Flows under Climate Change: Postprocessing or Composite Objective Calibration?

Abstract:Climate change is expected to have large impacts on peak flows. However, there may be bias in the simulation of peak flows by hydrological models. This study aims to improve the simulation of peak flows under climate change in Lanjiang catchment, east China, by comparing two approaches: postprocessing of peak flows and composite objective calibration. Two hydrological models [Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and modele du Genie Rural a 4 parametres Journalier (GR4J)] are employed to simulate the daily flows, and the peaks-over-threshold method is used to extract peak flows from the simulated daily flows. Three postprocessing methods, namely, the quantile mapping method and two generalized linear models, are set up to correct the biases in the simulated raw peak flows. A composite objective calibration of the GR4J model by taking the peak flows into account in the calibration process is also carried out. The regional climate model Providing Regional Climates for Impacts Studies (PRECIS) with boundary forcing from two GCMs (HadCM3 and ECHAM5) under greenhouse gas emission scenario A1B is applied to produce the climate data for the baseline period and the future period 2011-40. The results show that the postprocessing methods, particularly quantile mapping method, can correct the biases in the raw peak flows effectively. The composite objective calibration also resulted in a good simulation performance of peak flows. The final estimated peak flows in the future period show an obvious increase compared with those in the baseline period, indicating there will probably be more frequent floods in Lanjiang catchment in the future.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of climate change on low flows in Xiangjiang River Basin in central China. Projections from four global climate models (GCMs) under representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP8.5 are used to drive the hydrological models. An ensemble prediction in the future period (2021-2050) from three competing hydrological models is generated using the Bayesian model averaging (BMA) method. Though hydrological models do well in simulating daily discharges, all underestimate the observed low flows to some extent. Such underestimation of low flows could be compensated by application of the BMA method. Uncertainty from GCMs is a predominating source for monthly mean discharges. An increase in intensity of 7Q10, 7Q20, and 7Q30 is found under both RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 for most cases. The increase of 7Q10, 7Q20, and 7Q30 could be more related to minimum monthly precipitation rather than the amount of monthly mean precipitation. The magnitude of the increase is smaller under RCP8.5 than RCP4.5, which could be explained by the higher temperature increase under RCP8.5. (C) 2017 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract:With the increase of both magnitude and frequency of hydrological extreme events such as drought and flooding, the significance of adequately modeling hydrological extreme events is fully recognized. Estimation of extreme rainfall/flood for various return periods is of prime importance for hydrological design or risk assessment. However, due to knowledge and data limitation, uncertainty involved in extrapolating beyond available data is huge. In this paper, different sources of uncertainty in statistical modeling of extreme hydrological events are studied in a systematic way. This is done by focusing on several key uncertainty sources using three different case studies. The chosen case studies highlight a number of projects where there have been questions regarding the uncertainty in extreme rainfall/flood estimation. The results show that the uncertainty originated from the methodology is the largest and could be >40% for a return period of 200 years, while the uncertainty caused by ignoring the dependence among multiple hydrological variables seems the smallest. In the end, it is highly recommended that uncertainty in modeling extreme hydrological events be fully recognized and incorporated into a formal hydrological extreme analysis.
Simulation of Monthly Runoff Considering Flow Components in Yarlung Zangbo River

Abstract:The semi-distributed hydrological model SWAT was built for the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin.After calibration (1989-1998) and validation (1999-2005),the monthly runoffwas simulated at three hydrological stations (Nugesha,Yangcun,Nuxia).We selected two sets of parameters to analyze the performance of SWAT model dhrough Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NS),determination coefficient (R2) and relative error (PBIAS).The results show that for Parameter Set 1,R2 at three stations were as high as 0.9,NS were 0.9,0.92 and 0.72,PBIA S were 7.1％,18.5％ and 34.2％respectively during the calibration.However,the simulations of runoff components are unrealistic.For Parameter Set 2,although the evaluation indexes were not very high,its runoff components are reasonable.This is the same case during the validation.Therefore,it is recommended that the simulation skills of runoff components be considered during model calibration and validation.
Impact Assessment of Multiple Uncertainty Sources on High Flows under Climate Change

Abstract:This paper aims to investigate the uncertainty ranges of high flows under climate change in Jinhua River basin, eastern China. Four representative concentration pathways (RCPs), three global climate models (GCMs), 10 downscaling parameter sets and three hydrologic models are applied to simulate future discharges. Changes of annual maximum discharges are assessed for the baseline period (1961–1990) and future period (2011–2040). The uncertainties of annual maximum discharges are calculated for each uncertainty source and compared with different combinations of them. The minimum temperature will probably increase all year round in the future period and maximum temperature would increase in most cases. The changes of precipitation showed different directions by different models and emission scenarios. The annual maximum discharges would decrease for all RCPs. The order of uncertainty ranges of high flows due to different uncertainty sources from high to low is: hydrologic models, GCMs, parameter sets in the downscaling method and emission scenarios. It must be noted that the small uncertainty contribution from different emission scenarios is due to the study period when the differences in increase of radiative forcing and greenhouse gas concentration are less obvious between different RCPs compared to the second half of the 21st century.
Uncertainty in Simulation of Land-Use Change Impacts on Catchment Runoff with Multi-Timescales Based on the Comparison of the HSPF and SWAT Models

Abstract:Hydrological modeling has provided key insights into the mechanisms of land-use change impacts on runoff. However, the uncertainty of this impact is poorly understood. This paper examines the uncertainty originated from hydrological models' parameters and structure in simulating hydrological responses to land use change on daily, monthly and annual time scales. Two hydrological models, SWAT and HSPF, were applied to simulate the runoff response in the Xitiaoxi basin of eastern China. The effects of three land use scenarios (in 1985, 2002 and 2014) were analyzed with respect to the expansion of urban areas and reduction of cropland and forests. The changes in streamflow with multi-timescales between two models were compared at the whole basin and the sub-basin scales. The parameter uncertainty was estimated based on a sequential uncertainty analysis method (SUFI-2). The results indicate that the two models (SWAT and HSPF) could reproduce the observed daily and seasonal flows well, but they cannot accurately reconstruct the extreme flows (such as annual 7-day minimum discharge, R_7dMIN). The effect of parameter uncertainty on streamflow varies over time scales. The simulated annual and monthly runoff change values show large discrepancies but with same trends. The simulated changes for annual maximum discharge (R_1dMAX) and R_7dMIN often show different signs. The average width of the predictive interval in the relative change of different flow characteristics exceeded 100% of the average relative changes for both models. HSPF tends to present larger relative changes for the annual and monthly runoffs compared to SWAT. Moreover, the model choice could affect the direction change in R_1dMAX and R_7dMIN. However, when land use change was significant to a certain degree, both models simulated increased R_ldMAX and decreased R_7dMIN, but with different significance levels. The study suggests that the model structure represents an additional uncertainty, which should be accounted for in the land-use change impact assessment.
Quantifying uncertainty sources in extreme flow projections for three watersheds with different climate features in China

Abstract:<p>Extreme flow projections are of considerable necessity for flood and drought disaster prevention and sustainable water resources management to adapt to future climate change. However, these projections are usually associated with large uncertainties arising from different sources. A numerical modeling system including three emission scenarios (ESs), four climate models (CMs), four statistical downscaling (SD) methods, four hydrological modeling (HM) schemes, and four probability distribution (PD) functions was established in this study to project future extreme flow changes at basin scales. This modeling system was employed in the following three watersheds with different climatic and topographical characteristics in China: The Upper Ganjiang River basin (UGRB) in the humid region, the Laoha River basin (LRB) in the semi-arid region, and the Yellow River source region (YRSR) in the semi-humid region. Subsequently, the analysis of variance approach (ANOVA) was used to quantify the contribution of different uncertainty sources in extreme flow projections. Results show that extreme high flow was projected to increase in all basins. By contrast, extreme low flow would decrease in UGRB, and inconsistent change signals were found in LRB and YRSR. The ANOVA-based assessment reveals that CM is generally the dominant uncertainty source for mean monthly streamflow and extreme low flow projections. ES explains a large proportion of total uncertainty for extreme low flow projection in the 2060s in UGRB because of the large difference in non-precipitation frequency projected under different ESs. SD is the main uncertainty source in extreme high flow projection in UGRB where extreme precipitation events frequently occur. Compared with other basins, HM produces relatively high uncertainty in LRB due to its inferior performance in historical streamflow simulations. PD contributes a low percentage of uncertainty in extreme flow projections. Interactions among uncertainty sources even produce larger uncertainties than most individual sources. Although future extreme flow projections are associated with non-negligible uncertainties, the projected remarkable changes in extreme high and low flows indicate that stakeholders should take certain measures to mitigate flood risks in the three basins and alleviate drought risks in UGRB</p>

A Review of SWAT Applications, Performance and Future Needs for Simulation of Hydro-Climatic Extremes

Abstract:Hydro-climatic extremes, such as droughts and floods, have most likely increased due to climatic change and could lead to severe impacts on socio-economic, structural and environmental sectors. With nearly 4000 publications, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is clearly one of the most extensively used ecohydrological models worldwide. The model has been widely used for projecting the impacts of future hydro-climatic changes, but application for extreme streamflow conditions is still rarely reported. To date, SWAT application reviews have focused on compilations of SWAT studies for specific or relatively new applications such as eco-hydrological modelling, ecosystem services, sub-daily simulations, and pesticide fate and transport simulations. However, no existing SWAT review studies have focused on simulation of hydro-climatic extremes. Therefore, this research aims to bridge this gap by compiling and reviewing the findings of studies reporting SWAT hydro-climatic extremes including highlighting the performance and future research needs. A total of 111 articles have been identified since 1999; most of these studies were conducted in the United States and China. These articles can be divided into extreme flow assessments, drought studies, flood studies, drought and flood studies, SWAT coupling with other models, and SWAT improvements. Most of the extreme performance assessment studies reported "satisfactory" performance, with a particular emphasis on peak flow comparisons. Future research needs regarding this topic include: (1) a unified SWAT extreme performance assessment framework; (2) SWAT improvements that result in improved replication of peak and low flows; (3) reliability assessment of global and satellite products for SWAT extreme simulations; (4) bias correction of CMIP6 and regional climate projections; (5) comparison of SWAT+ and SWAT for extreme flow simulations in different types of basins; (6) development of an extreme flow module within an overall SWAT modelling system; and (7) integration of artificial intelligence within SWAT modelling.
Do Model Parameters Change under Changing Climate and Land Use in the Upstream of the Lancang River Basin, China?

Abstract:Hydrological model parameters may vary under the impacts of climate and land-use change. This study proposes a hydrological modelling framework based on the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to investigate the variability of model parameters in three different experiments and to assess the impacts of climate and/or land-use change on these parameters in the upstream of the Lancang River Basin, China. In Experiment 1 (E1), most parameters show clear temporal trends under changing climate and land use, implying that model parameters are strongly influenced by their combined effects. Experiments 2 (E2) and 3 (E3) investigate the separate impacts of land-use change and climate change, respectively. Due to the almost invisible changes in land use in E2, there is no change detected in the model parameters. Temporal trends are found in most parameters in E3 and over half of them show consistent trends with E1, which indicates that climate change has greater impacts on model parameter variability. The simulated extreme streamflow and sediment fluxes vary substantially with time-variant parameters, implying that the variations in model parameters do matter for hydrological prediction.
Effects of Climate Change on Extreme Streamflow in Flood Season in the Upper and Middle Basin of the Huaihe River by SWAT Simulation

Abstract:Consecutive rainstorm events are a main flash⁃flood⁃producing phenomenon on a basin scale, and an extreme consecutive rainstorm is more likely to cause catastrophic floods in the Huaihe River Basin. We constructed a SWAT model for the upper and middle basin of the Huaihe River and the drove model using the RegCM3 outputs under SRES A2 Greenhouse Gas Emission Scenarios, during the period from January 1, 2071 to December 31, 2100, to investigate the extreme streamflow response to the climate change during the flood seasons. First, we analyzed the relationship between the maximum 3—13 day precipitation amount and the maximum 3—13 day mean streamflow and determined the maximum 9 day precipitation amount as an indicator of the extreme consecutive rainstorm and the maximum 9⁃day mean streamflow as an indicator of the extreme streamflow in the flood season. Second, we constructed a SWAT model for the upper and middle basin of the Huaihe River to simulate the maximum 9⁃day mean streamflow in the flood season. Thirdly, we drove the model using the RegCM3 outputs and simulated the maximum 9⁃day mean streamflow during the period from January 1, 2071 to htt p:/ /w ww .ec olo gic a.c n http: / / www.ecologica.cn December 31, 2100, under SRES A2 Greenhouse Gas Emission Scenarios and the period from January 1,1961 to December 31, 1990 (reference period) respectively. Finally, we compared the results of the maximum 9⁃day mean streamflow in the flood season under two climate scenarios, and investigated the response of the extreme flow to climate change from the perspective of the probability characteristics. The SWAT model constructed for the upper and middle basin of the Huaihe River simulated monthly streamflow accurately based on the observational data during the period from 1958 to 2009. Simultaneously, the simulation results also reproduced the prominent characteristics of the maximum 9⁃day mean streamflow in the flood season. The results indicated that, under SRES A2 Scenarios, during the period from January 1, 2071 to December 31, 2100: (1) RegCM3 predicted that annual mean temperature will rise, annual precipitation amount will increase, and the spatial contrast of precipitation will increase in the upper and middle basin of the Huaihe River. However, the annual precipitation amount decreased in the middle basin of the Yinghe River and showed a warming and drying trend. Simultaneously, extreme consecutive precipitation in the flood season increased, especially in the southern basin of the lower reaches. (2) The extreme streamflow in the flood season increased more remarkably, and the maximum 9⁃day mean streamflow in the flood season increased more than 20% on average in five hydrological gauges. ( 3) The probability distribution of extreme streamflow was more concentrated and the frequency of the extreme streamflow was much higher, with much higher flood risk in the middle and lower basin. ( 4) The probability of extreme streamflow in the lower basin responded more sensitively to the extreme streamflow changes, which means flood risks increase owing to climate change. These conclusions have practical significance for flood risk management and control in the Huaihe River Basin under the climate change scenario.

Abstract:The present study analyzed sensitivity of flow parameters using SWAT and effect of climate change on surface water resources, considering uncertainty with Monte Carlo. For this purpose, output of nine-model related to fifth-climate change-report during baseline period 1971–2000 was weighted. Using Monte Carlo, 100 samples of probabilistic distribution of basin temperature and rainfall were generated. LARS-WG model was used for downscaling, then temperature and precipitation were calculated under RCP2.6 and RCP8.5 for future periods 2040–2069 and 2070–2099. SWAT was calibrated using observational-data and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) (NCEP CFSR) global climate datasets and sensitivity of parameters affecting flow was analyzed. Results showed that observed-data had better performance than NCEP CFSR. Finally, future runoff was calculated under RCP2.6 and RCP8.5 for 2040–2069 and 2070–2099. Results showed that average annual runoff decreased by 84, 80, 82 and 80%, for 2040–2069 (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5) and for 2070–2099 (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5) relative to baseline, respectively.
Coupling SWAT and Bi-LSTM for improving daily-scale hydro-climatic simulation and climate change impact assessment in a tropical river basin

Abstract:Global climate change has led to an increase in both the frequency and magnitude of extreme events around the world, the risk of which is especially imminent in tropical regions. Developing hydrological models with better capabilities to simulate streamflow, especially peak flow, is urgently needed to facilitate water resource planning and management as well as climate change mitigation efforts in the tropics. In view of the need, this paper explores the feasibility of improving streamflow simulation performance in the tropical Kelantan River Basin (KRB) of Peninsular Malaysia through coupling a conceptual process-based hydrological model - Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) with a deep learning model - Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) in two ways. All SWAT parameters were set as their default values in one hybrid model (SWAT-D-LSTM), whereas three most sensitive SWAT parameters were calibrated in the other hybrid model (SWAT-T-LSTM). Comparison of daily streamflow simulation results have shown that SWAT-T-LSTM consistently performs better than SWAT-D-LSTM as well as the stand-alone SWAT and Bi-LSTM model throughout the simulation period. Particularly, SWAT-T-LSTM performs considerably better than the other three models in simulating daily peak flow. Based on the latest projection results of five GCMs from the Sixth Phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) under three emission scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP5-8.5), the best-performed SWAT-T-LSTM was run to assess the potential impacts of climate change on streamflow in the KRB. Ensemble assessment results have concluded that both average and extreme streamflow is much likely to increase considerably in the already wet northeast monsoon season from November to January, which has surely raised the alarm for more frequent flood occurrence in the KRB.

Abstract:Abstract Thus far, reanalysis-based meteorological products have drawn little attention to the influence of meteorological elements of products on hydrological modeling. This study aims to evaluate the hydrological application potential of the precipitation, temperature, and solar radiation of the China Meteorological Assimilation Driving Datasets for the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model (CMADS) and Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) in an alpine basin. The precipitation, temperature, and solar radiation of the gauge-observed meteorological dataset (GD), CFSR, and CMADS were cross-combined, and 20 scenarios were constructed to drive the SWAT model. From the comprehensive comparisons of all scenarios, we drew the following conclusions: (1) among the three meteorological elements, precipitation has the greatest impact on the simulation results, and using GD precipitation from sparse stations yielded better performance than CMADS and CFSR; (2) although the SWAT modeling driven by CMADS and CFSR performed poorly, with CMADS underestimation and CFSR overestimation, the temperature and solar radiation of CMADS and CFSR can be an alternative data source for streamflow simulation; (3) models using GD precipitation, CFSR temperature, and CFSR solar radiation as input yielded the best performance in streamflow simulation, suggesting that these data sources can be applied to this data-scarce alpine region.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of accelerated global climate change and urbanization, the frequency and severity of flood disasters have been increasing. In recent years, influenced by climate change, the Hai-River Basin (HRB) has experienced multiple large-scale flood disasters. During the widespread extraordinary flood event from July 28th to August 1st, 2023, eight rivers witnessed their largest floods on record. These events caused significant damage and impact on economic and social development. The development of hydrological models with better performance can help researchers understand the impacts of climate change, provide risk information on different disaster events within watersheds, support decision-makers in formulating adaptive measures, urban planning, and improve flood defense mechanisms to address the ever-changing climate environment. This study examines the potential for enhancing streamflow simulation accuracy in the HRB located in Northeast China by combining the physically-based hydrological model with the data-driven model. Three hybrid models, SWAT-D-BiLSTM, SWAT-C-BiLSTM and SWAT-C-BiLSTM with SinoLC-1, were constructed in this study, in which SWAT was used as a transfer function to simulate the base flow and quick flow generation process based on weather data and spatial features, and BiLSTM was used to directly predict the streamflow according to the base flow and quick flow. In the SWAT-C-BiLSTM model, SWAT parameters with P values less than 0.4 in each hydrological station-controlled watershed were calibrated, while the SWAT-D-BiLSTM model did not undergo calibration. Additionally, this study utilizes both 30 m resolution land use and land cover (LULC) map and the first 1 m resolution LULC map SinoLC-1 as input data for the models to explore the impact on streamflow simulation performance. Among five models, the NSE of SWAT-C-BiLSTM with SinoLC-1 reached 0.93 and the R 2 reached 0.95 during the calibration period, and both of them stayed at 0.92 even in the validation period, while the NSE and R 2 of the other four models were all below 0.90 in the validation period. The potential impact of climate change on streamflow in the HRB was evaluated by using predicted data from five global climate models from CMIP6 as input for the best-performing SWAT-C-BiLSTM with SinoLC-1. The results indicate that climate change exacerbates the uneven distribution of streamflow in the HRB, particularly during the concentrated heavy rainfall months of July and August. It is projected that the monthly streamflow in these two months will increase by 34% and 49% respectively in the middle of this century. Furthermore, it is expected that the annual streamflow will increase by 5.6% to 9.1% during the mid-century and by 6.7% to 9.3% by the end of the century. Both average streamflow and peak streamflow are likely to significantly increase, raising concerns about more frequent urban flooding in the capital economic region within the HRB.

Abstract:This study examines the influence of climate change on hydrological processes, particularly runoff, and how it affects managing water resources and ecosystem sustainability. It uses CMIP6 data to analyze changes in runoff patterns under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP). This study also uses a Deep belief network (DBN) and a Modified Sparrow Search Optimizer (MSSO) to enhance the runoff forecasting capabilities of the SWAT model. DBN can learn complex patterns in the data and improve the accuracy of runoff forecasting. The meta-heuristic algorithm optimizes the models through iterative search processes and finds the optimal parameter configuration in the SWAT model. The Optimal SWAT Model accurately predicts runoff patterns, with high precision in capturing variability, a strong connection between projected and actual data, and minimal inaccuracy in its predictions, as indicated by an ENS score of 0.7152 and an R 2 coefficient of determination of 0.8012. The outcomes of the forecasts illustrated that the runoff will decrease in the coming years, which could threaten the water source. Therefore, managers should manage water resources with awareness of these conditions.
