Abstract:The exact solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation of a two-dimensional hydrogen molecular ion (2D HMI), expressed in confocal elliptic coordinates, are obtained. Calculated results show that the binding energy and equilibrium distance of the ground state of a 2D HMI are, respectively, much larger and shorter than those of a 3D HMI, and that the behavior of a low-dimensional electron is similar to that of a more massive charged particle. This may be useful for understanding new physical phenomena.
Quantum Levels and Zeeman Splitting for Two-Dimensional Hydrogenic Donor States in a Magnetic Field.

Abstract:We have presented exact solutions for two-dimensional (2D) hydrogenic donor states in a magnetic field and a study of quantum levels and Zeeman bifurcation of 2D donor states in different strength of magnetic field. The quadratic effect of the magnetic field partly lifts the degeneracy of 2D donor states in the pure Coulomb potential and results in an increase of all quantum levels. Then, the first-order term of a magnetic field, i.e., the Zeeman term, completely lifts the degeneracy. At strong magnetic field, the degeneracy of Landau levels is lifted by the Coulomb potential. As the magnetic field decreases, all of the values of the energies decrease linearly until the hybridization between Landau and Coulomb levels occurs. In addition, based on the comparison between energies of 2D and 3D states, we conclude that there are smaller diamagnetic shifts for 2D donor states than those for the corresponding 3D donor states.

Abstract:A negatively charged donor center D- (i.e., a neutral shallow donor D0 that binds a second electron) in a spherical quantum dot is studied by use of a variational approach. A trial function which includes electron-correlation effects and approaches the Chandrasekhar-type function in the limit of zero barrier height is used. The well-radius and barrier-height dependence of the "binding energy" of the D- center is obtained. The dimensional characteristics are clearly demonstrated not only for the "binding energy" and its maximum of the D- center but also for the ratio of D- to D0 "binding energy" and the electron-correlation effect.

Abstract:In d0 magnetism, the delocalization nature enables strong coupling, i.e., exchange coupling and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction, and thereby the stability of skyrmions in a wide range of temperature. Meanwhile, the small magnetic moment d0 renders skyrmions relatively robust in terms of perturbations raised by magnetic field. Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected chiral spin textures that hold great promise for information storage and processing. The current research efforts on magnetic skyrmions are exclusively based on d‐orbital magnetism, which restricts their existence in a narrow window of temperature‐external magnetic field (T‐B) phase diagram. Herein, employing first‐principles and Monte‐Carlo simulations, the work reports the identification of d0 magnetic skyrmions in 2D lattice of Tl2NO2. Arising from inversion asymmetry and strong spin‐orbit coupling compensated by ligand of heavy element, large Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction is obtained in monolayer Tl2NO2. This, competed with p‐orbital exchange interaction, leads to the d0 skyrmion physics under external magnetic field. Importantly, different from d‐orbital topological magnetism, the d0 magnetic skyrmions can be stabilized in a wide window of T‐B phase diagram. The underlying physics is related to the small magnetic moment and delocalization character of d0 magnetism. Furthermore, the work also demonstrates that the d0 magnetic skyrmions are strongly coupled with ferroelectricity. These findings open a new direction for magnetic skyrmion research.

Abstract:The binding energies ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{B}}$(${\mathit{D}}^{0}$) and ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{B}}$(${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) of neutral and negative donor (${\mathit{D}}^{0}$ and ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) centers in quantum dots (QD's) with different dimensionality and potential shape have been obtained by a variational approach with a trial function, which consists of the exact solutions of ${\mathit{D}}^{0}$-like ground states in the dots, includes the electron-correlation effect, and approaches the Chandrasekhar-type trial function at zero barrier height. The dimensionality and potential-shape effects of QD's on ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{B}}$(${\mathit{D}}^{0}$) and ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{B}}$(${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) have been studied in detail. It has been found that the electron-correlation effect on ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{B}}$(${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) depends on the dimensionality and decreases with increasing confinement. The ratio \ensuremath{\sigma} of ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{B}}$(${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$) to ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{B}}$(${\mathit{D}}^{0}$) approaches a constant value in the limit of strong confinement. It has been shown that the ratio \ensuremath{\sigma} and the electron-correlation effect are strongly dependent on the dimensionality of QD's and weakly dependent on the potential shape. Using the value of the \ensuremath{\sigma} obtained, calculated results of different quantum-well structures can be checked and compared with others.

Abstract:The lowest four states of two-dimensional (2D) hydrogen molecule H-2 and the lowest two states of its ions H-2(+) and H-2(-) are calculated with an applicable 2D hydrogen anion wave function properly chosen. The results are compared with their three-dimensional correspondents. It becomes possible to calculate transitions between states of clusters containing two shallow impurities in semiconductor thin films.

Abstract:Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is of particular interest as it plays a primary role in stabilizing topo-logical chiral magnetism such as skyrmions and has been intensively studied due to its potential applications for next-generation information storage technologies. For two-dimensional (2D) magnets, although Janus structure offers a paradigm to realize strong DMI, further studies are confined by the strict fabrication and the necessity of heavy atoms. Here, using first-principles calculations, we propose a strategy beyond this limit, where Li atoms are absorbed on the surface of a 2D magnet, resulting in a strong DMI through the Rashba effect by introducing an effective electric field generated by the perpendicular electronic polarization due to the charge transfer after the absorption. Furthermore, taking MnSe2 monolayer as an example, we predict the various phase transitions of skyrmions under strain manipulations and external magnetic fields. Our findings pave a road toward obtaining topological chiral magnetism.
On the Competition Between the Kondo Effect and the Exchange Interaction in a Parallel Double Quantum Dot System

Abstract:We study the competition between the Kondo effect and the exchange interaction in the parallel double quantum dot (DQD) system within an effective action field theory. The strong on-site Coulomb interactions in DQDs are treated by using the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation and the introduction of scalar potential fields. We show that a self-consistent perturbation approach, which takes into account the statistical properties of the potential fields acting on electrons in DQDs, describes well the crossover from the Kondo regime to the spin-singlet state in this system. The linear conductance and the intradot/interdot spin excitation spectra of this system are obtained.

Abstract:We study the bound states of a two dimensional free electron gas (2DEG) subjected to a perpendicular inhomogeneous magnetic field. An analytical transfer matrix (ATM) based exact quantization formula is derived for magnetic fields that vary (arbitrarily) along one spatial direction. As illustrative examples, we consider (1) a class of symmetric power law magnetic fields confined within a strip, followed by the problem of a (2) 2DEG placed under a thin ferromagnetic film, which are hitherto unexplored. The exact Landau levels for either cases are obtained. Also, the role of the fringing magnetic field (present in the second example) on these levels is discussed.

Abstract:Variational calculations are performed for the ground and first excited states of D0 off centre and the lowest singlet and triplet states of D- off centre in quantum wells in a magnetic field. It is found that the off-centre effect on the binding energies increases with increasing magnetic field. The binding energy of the triplet state can be larger than that of the corresponding singlet one if the magnetic field is strong enough.

Abstract:We study the two-body bound states of a model Hamiltonian that describes the interaction between two field-oriented dipole moments. This model has been used extensively in many-body physics of ultracold polar molecules and magnetic atoms, but its few-body physics has been explored less fully. With a hard-wall short-range boundary condition, the dipole-dipole bound states are universal and exhibit a complicated pattern of avoided crossings between states of different character. For more realistic Lennard-Jones short-range interactions, we consider parameters representative of magnetic atoms and polar molecules. For magnetic atoms, the bound states are dominated by the Lennard-Jones potential, and the perturbative dipole-dipole interaction is suppressed by the special structure of van der Waals bound states. For polar molecules, we find a dense manifold of dipole-dipole bound states with many avoided crossings as a function of induced dipole or applied field, similar to those for hard-wall boundary conditions. This universal pattern of states may be observable spectroscopically for pairs of ultracold polar molecules.

Abstract:In this research paper, we investigate the impact of the confinement nature on a neutral hydrogenic donor impurity ( D 0 ) in a quantum dot (QD). To investigate the system, we employ the exponential power potential in the presence of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions, and an external magnetic field. Using the variational method, we calculated the ground state and first excited state energies. We obtained the corresponding binding energies, stable temperatures, transition energy, magnetic susceptibilities, and oscillator strength as a function of various QD parameters and potential shapes. Our findings demonstrate intriguing behavior in response to changes in potential shape, quantum dot parameters, and spin-orbit coupling strengths. These findings provide important insights into the fundamental physics of QDs and impurities, and they may help in designing and optimizing QD-based technologies like sensors and detectors.

Abstract:The dielectric and magnetic properties of a dinuclear Co(II) double-stranded helicate containing hydrogen bridging bond have been investigated. Magnetic properties, HF-EPR spectra and dielectric properties all indicate that this intramolecular hydrogen bond plays an important role in the magnetic exchange interactions and dielectric properties. Ab initio calculations provide further support for above conclusions.

Abstract:We report on a theoretical study of a D− system in noncircular quantum dots by an exact diagonalization method. The stability diagram of the D− center is obtained in the presence of perpendicular magnetic fields. At zero magnetic field, it is found that the D− system would disintegrate if the distance between the donor and the edges of the dot is smaller than one effective Bohr radius. In a finite field, the system is always binding when the donor is localized in the center of the dot. As the donor moves away from the center to the edges of the dot, it is seen that the magnetic field would account for the disintegration of the system. The result reveals the interplay between the electron-impurity and electron-electron interactions, quantum confinement, and external magnetic fields in a few-electron system in quantum dots.

Abstract:Using a variational method, we have calculated the ground-state energy, binding energy and equilibrium distance of hydrogen molecular ions (HMIs) in quantum-well structures. The crossover from three-dimensional to two-dimensional behavior of HMIs is shown clearly. This dimensionality effect may be useful for understanding new physical phenomena in microstructures.

Abstract:For decades, it has remained an open question, whether two dopants in the $t$--$J$ model bind in the strongly correlated regime of small spin couplings versus hopping, $J \ll t$. Here, we investigate this problem in Bethe lattice structures with Ising coupling $J_z$, and mainly focus on the case of a coordination number equal to 4. The special geometry circumvents subtle effects in regular lattices, but importantly still contains the non-trivial dependency on the rotational symmetry and particle statistics. It, furthermore, allows us to reach numerical convergence, and we conclusively answer whether binding occurs or not. In particular, we find that the rotationally symmetric $s$ waves unbind below $J_z \simeq 0.3 t$, which we unveil is tied to Pauli blocking of symmetrical hole configurations. This is further substantiated by the fact that holes in a bosonic spin environment shows strong -- superlinear -- binding at low $J_z / t$. Additionally, higher rotational fermionic $p$ and $d$ waves partially overcome the blocking, are perfectly degenerate, and bind for all $J_z / t$. In the strongly correlated regime of $J_z \ll t$, this binding occurs sublinearly with scaling $\sim t (J_z / t)^{3/2}$.

Valence bond distribution and correlation in bipartite Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Abstract:Every singlet state of a quantum spin 1/2 system can be decomposed into a linear combination of valence bond basis states. The range of valence bonds within this linear combination as well as the correlations between them can reveal the nature of the singlet state, and are key ingredients in variational calculations. In this work, we study the bipartite valence bond distributions and their correlations within the ground state of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on bipartite lattices. In terms of field theory, this problem can be mapped to correlation functions near a boundary. In dimension d >= 2, a non-linear sigma model analysis reveals that at long distances the probability distribution P(r) of valence bond lengths decays as |r|^(-d-1) and that valence bonds are uncorrelated. By a bosonization analysis, we also obtain P(r) proportional to |r|^(-d-1) in d=1 despite the different mechanism. On the other hand, we find that correlations between valence bonds are important even at large distances in d=1, in stark contrast to d >= 2. The analytical results are confirmed by high-precision quantum Monte Carlo simulations in d=1, 2, and 3. We develop a single-projection loop variant of the valence bond projection algorithm, which is well-designed to compute valence bond probabilities and for which we provide algorithmic details.

Density Functional Study on the Structures and Thermodynamic Properties of Small Ions Around Polyanionic DNA

Abstract:A density functional theory (DFT) is presented for describing the distributions of small ions around an isolated infinitely long polyanionic DNA molecule in the framework of the restricted primitive model. The hard-sphere contribution to the excess Helmholtz energy functional is derived from the modified fundamental measure theory, and the electrostatic interaction is evaluated through a quadratic functional Taylor expansion. The predictions from the DFT are compared with integral equation theory (IET), the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation, and computer simulation data for the ionic density profiles, electrostatic potentials, and charge compensation functions at varieties of solution conditions. Good agreement between the DFT and computer simulations is achieved. The charge inversion phenomena of DNA are observed in a moderately concentrated solution of 2:1 and 2:2 electrolytes using the DFT, IET, and computer simulation, but can never be predicted from the PB equation. The predictions of charge inversion from the DFT prove to be more accurate than those from the IET when compared with computer simulation data. The preferential interaction coefficients from the DFT are also compared with those from the PB equation and Monte Carlo simulation, and it is shown that the DFT is superior to the PB equation.

Abstract:We present a 2D lattice model of water to study the effects of ion hydration on the properties of water. We map the water molecules as lattice particles consisting of a single Oxygen at the center of a site and two Hydrogen atoms on each side. The internal state of the system, such as the dipole moment at a site, is defined with respect to the location of the Hydrogen atoms at the site depending on their role in Hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) being a donor or an acceptor. We study the influence of the charge and the radius of the ion on the insertion energy and on the H-bonds in the first and second hydration layers around the ion and in the bulk. In particular we analyze how the competing interactions of the short-ranged H-bonds and the long-ranged electrostatics influence the hydration properties. The role of the ion both as a source of the electrostatic interactions as well as a defect is also discussed. Our model also shows the well known fact that the polarizability of the water molecules destroys the hydrogen bond network and increases the dipole moment of the molecules near the ion.
Anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction protected by D 2d crystal symmetry in two-dimensional ternary compounds

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions, topologically protected chiral spin swirling quasiparticles, have attracted great attention in fundamental physics and applications. Recently, the discovery of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets have aroused great interest due to their appealing physical properties. Moreover, both experimental and theoretical works have revealed that isotropic Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) can be achieved in 2D magnets or ferromagnet-based heterostructures. However, 2D magnets with anisotropic DMI haven’t been reported yet. Here, via using first-principles calculations, we unveil that anisotropic DMI protected by D 2d crystal symmetry can exist in 2D ternary compounds M Cu X 2 ( M : 3d transition metal (TM), X : group VIA). Interestingly, by using micromagnetic simulations, we demonstrate that ferromagnetic (FM) antiskyrmions, FM bimerons, antiferromagnetic (AFM) antiskyrmions, and AFM bimerons can be realized in the M Cu X 2 family. Our discovery opens up an avenue to creating antiskyrmions and bimerons with anisotropic DMI protected by D 2d crystal symmetry in 2D magnets.
