Abstract:A series of Ag/titanium oxide composite films with Ag atom concentration of 28%-82% were prepared by cosputtering technique. The scanning electron microscopy and the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies reveal that metallic Ag nanoparticles with a size of 20-50 nm disperse in titanium oxide. The plasmon resonance absorption peak of the embedded Ag nanoparticles shifts to about 860 nm at Ag atom concentration of 42%, the nonlinear absorption coefficient beta(eff) and the nonlinear refractive index gamma are -1.4x10(5) cm/GW and 3.8 cm(2)/GW, respectively, which were measured by the Z-scan technique at 790 nm with a peak irradiance of 1.8 GW/cm(2). The corresponding third-order susceptibility chi((3)) is about 4.7x10(-7) esu. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.
Adjusting Third-Order Nonlinear Properties in Silicon Triply Resonant Nanobeam Cavities

Abstract:We propose the use of triply resonant silicon photonic structures, based on a set of three coupled silicon nanobeam cavities, to engineer third-order nonlinearities. We show that a judicious selection of the opto-geometrical parameters allows a nearly independent tuning of the linear and nonlinear properties of the system. We demonstrate that longitudinally shifting the central cavity weakly affects the system nonlinear properties while strongly changing its resonance wavelengths. In contrast, longitudinally shifting one of the side cavities leads to a significant variation of the self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, and four-wave mixing nonlinear overlaps, while the linear properties of the three-cavity photonic molecule are then only moderately tuned. This geometrical control of the nonlinear properties of photonic molecules opens new degrees of freedom for the realization of small footprint and efficient optical switching and frequency conversion devices.

Abstract:The third order optical nonlinearities of SnO 2 nanoparticles were studied in a nonresonant region by Z scan technique with 18 ns, 0.53 μm pulses from a Q switched Nd∶YAG laser. The sign and magnitude of the third order nonlinear susceptibility χ (3)  and two photon absorption coefficient β, et al., of SnO 2 nanoparticles with different size were obtained. The experimental results were discussed in terms of the quantum confined effect.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles are cost-effective plasmonic materials for the nonlinear optics, but the applications suffer incompatibility with the matrices. This study explores the in situ formation of silver nanoparticles within the crystalline matrix of labradorite minerals. The methodology involves a high-temperature diffusion process, enabling the nucleation and growth of silver nanoparticles directly within the labradorite crystal lattice. Characterization through spectroscopic and microscopic techniques reveals the successful formation of silver nanoparticles with a diameter of 8.40 ± 4.32 nm, exhibiting notable surface plasmonic resonances absorption at 414 nm. Additionally, the nonlinear optical property of the resulting material is investigated through Z-scan experiments. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility β at 400 nm was estimated to be 5.0 × 10 −12 m/W. This research not only advances our understanding of nanoscale phenomena within mineral crystals but also underscores their potential applications in nonlinear optical devices and related fields.

Off-Resonant Third-Order Optical Nonlinearity of an Ag:TiO 2 Composite Film

Abstract:Using the femtosecond time-resolved optical Kerr effect technique, we investigate the off-resonant nonlinear optical response of an Ag:Ti02 composite film prepared by a vacuum magnetron sputtering method. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of the composite film with silver nanoparticle size of about 3Ohm is estimated to be 1.9×10^-10 esu at the incident laser wavelength of 80Ohm. When the photon energy of the incident beam is lower than that for surface plasmon or the interband transition of silver nanoparticles, the observed third-order optical nonlinearity is attributed to the intraband transition of the free electrons. Based on the linear limit of the electric field within micro-spherical model, we assign this large optical nonlinearity to the local field enhancement of the third-order nonlinearity.

Abstract:Large third-order optical nonlinearity is observed in single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) films that are directly synthesized by CVD method rather than post-deposited from solution. Through z-scan method, the third-order nonlinear susceptibility (chi((3))) is measured, and the vertical bar Im chi((3))vertical bar is 1.8 x 10(-7) esu at 1064 nm, which is among the highest reported values for optical nonlinear materials. Combined with their transparent morphology and ultrafast carrier relaxation time, our results indicate the promising prospect of directly synthesized SWNT films as saturable absorbers using in mode-lock lasers or ultrafast switching materials in optical telecommunications.

Abstract:In order to elucidate the relationship for third-order nonlinear optical properties of anisotropic metal nanoparticles between the incident laser wavelength and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) wavelength, gold nanorods (GNRs) with a tuned longitudinal SPR mode in frequency were prepared by seed-mediated methods with two different surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and benzyldimethylammonium chloride (BDAC). The real and imaginary parts of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities χ(3) were examined by near-infrared (800 nm) femtosecond Z-scan and I-scan techniques for various gold sols with SPR wavelengths of 530 nm (spheres), 800 nm (nanorods) and 1000 nm (nanorods), named as 530GNSs, 800GNRs and 1000GNRs, respectively. All the samples showed intrinsically third-order nonlinear optical refractive responses. However, as for the real part of χ(3) for one particle, 800GNRs whose plasmon peak was tuned to the incident laser wavelength exhibited a Reχ(3) value 45 times stronger than 530GNSs. More interestingly, the imaginary part of χ(3) was more greatly influenced at the tuned SPR wavelength. Here we first demonstrate that 800GNRs showed plasmon-enhanced saturable absorption (SA) due to a longitudinal SPR tuned to the incident laser wavelength.

Few photons probe third-order nonlinear properties of nanomaterials in a plasmonic nanocavity

Abstract:Quantification of nonlinear optical properties is required for nano-optical devices, but they are challenging to measure on a nanomaterial. Here, we harness enhanced optical fields inside a plasmonic nanocavity to mediate efficient nonlinear interactions with the nanomaterials. We performed reflection Z-scan technique at intensity levels of kWcm^2, reaching down to two photons per pulse, in contrast to GWcm^2 in conventional methods. The few photons are sufficient to extract the nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient of different nanomaterials, including perovskite and Au nano-objects and a molecular monolayer. This work is of great interest for investigating nonlinear optical interactions on the nanoscale and characterizing nanomaterials, including fragile biomolecules.

Abstract:The third-order nonlinearities of PbS nano-dot and nano-belts have been investigated using the Z-Scan technique with nanosecond laser pulses at 532nm. The effect of the PbS semiconductor nanometer-size and spatial forms on the third-order optical nonlinearities and optical limiting properties would be discussed when the nanometer-size were larger than the exciton size. The optical limiting mechanism of materials was discussed in the nanosecond time domain.

Abstract:Over the last three decades, plasmonics using metallic nanostructures has become central to nanophotonics research. Recently, its targets have been extended to nonlinear optical phenomena. In a nonlinear regime, quantum mechanical effects, as exemplified by electron spill-out on the surface of nanostructures, significantly influence the optical response. Quantum hydrodynamic theory (QHT) is a promising basis for the analysis of nonlinear optical responses involving such quantum mechanical effects. Herein, QHT was applied to calculate the third-order optical nonlinearity of a spherical metallic nanostructure. Enhanced third-order nonlinear optical properties of ZnO@C-N composite microspheres

Abstract:We report the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of ZnO@C-N composite microspheres and pure ZnO which have been investigated with the Z-scan technique under continuous wave laser. ZnO@C-N composite microspheres have been hydrothermally synthesized at two different precursor concentrations to have structures at different impurity levels. Moreover, pure ZnO is prepared under the annealing process. The nonlinear optical absorption of samples was measured by using the open-aperture Z-scan technique and was evaluated relating to the two-photon absorption (TPA) mechanism. Moreover, both ZnO@C-N and ZnO microstructures exhibited a negative nonlinear refractive index (NLR) referring to the self-defocusing effect. The order of the (NLR) value, is about 10-10(cm2/W) and, the NLA coefficients of specimens are in the order of 10-5(cm/W). The NLA coefficient has a similar behavior as the NLR versus increasing incident intensity of the laser. The results show that the nonlinearity response of ZnO@C-N composites is higher than the pure ZnO and ZnO@C-N at higher precursor concentrations exhibits the maximum amount of NLA and NLR coefficients compared to other samples. This observation which is attributed to the change in optical and structural properties of material due to impurity presence, underscores the presence of impurity for engineering materials to improve the nonlinearity properties.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical properties of PbS nanoparticles were studied by the Z-scan technique with 50 ps pulse width, 530 nm and 1060 nm wavelengths from a mode-locked Nd: YAG laser. It is found that the sample shows a saturation absorption at 530 nm, and a two-photon absorption at 1060 nm. The optical limiting properties of PbS nanoparticles at these two wavelengths were also studied.

Abstract:A type of Ag/SiO2 /Ag triangular nanoprism was presented and its optical properties and sensing performance were investigated. The calculation results by finite difference time domain ( FDTD) numerical method show that the peak wavelength of the extinction spectra with various dielectric thicknesses has remarkable redshift compared with single-material-composed nanoprism,and the refractive index sensitivity increases. When the thickness of SiO2 dielectric layer increases,the plasmon coupling between the top and the bottom silver layers becomes weaker and the redshift speed becomes slower. When the thickness of SiO2 reaches 60 nm,the coupling disappeared; the extinction spectra and refractive index sensitivity are immovable. For the nanoprisms with truncated vertices in experiment,SiO2 dielectric layer also shows good adjustments to its optical properties and sensing performance.

Abstract:The Z -scan method is used to analyze the nonlinear optical response in mixtures of colloidal Ag 2 S quantum dots with a diameter of 2.5 nm, passivated with thioglycolic acid, and spherical silver nanoparticles with a diameter of 6 nm, passivated with sodium citrate, in the field of 10 ns pulses of the second harmonic (532 nm) of an Nd 3+ :YAG laser. An enhancement of nonlinear absorption in mixtures of Ag 2 S quantum dots with silver nanoparticles is established against the background of suppression of nonlinear refraction. Quenching and acceleration of the luminescence kinetics of Ag 2 S quantum dots in the presence of silver nanoparticles indicates an interaction between the mixture components. The observed patterns in the nonlinear optical response are explained by changes in the probabilities of optical transitions involving local levels of structural defects of Ag 2 S colloidal quantum dots under the polarizing effect of plasmonic spherical silver nanoparticles.

Abstract:The multi-armed CdS nanorods were synthesized by aqueous chemical growth route at room temperature. The nonlinear optical properties of CdS nanorods dispersed in ethanol solution were investigated using the Z-scan method at a wavelength of 532nm with pulse duration of 25ps. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, χ(3), was determined to be 1.6×10−13esu. Accounting for the CdS concentration and the effect of the dielectric confinement, χ(3) was extrapolated to be ∼10−9esu, which is over one order of magnitude larger than that of bulk material.

Abstract:In heavily doped semiconductor nanocrystal systems, high-order nonlinearities including third-order nonlinearity and fifth-order nonlinearity can be tailored to manipulate light on the nanoscale due to the semiconductor intrinsic absorption and localized surface plasmon resonances. Here, by exploiting the nonlinear optical properties of broadly infrared plasmons in solution-processed aluminum-doped ZnO nanocrystals (AZO NCs) with a wide band-gap, we demonstrate that the competition between plasma ground-state bleaching (third-order nonlinearity) and three-photon absorption (fifth-order nonlinearity) is responsible for the transition between saturable absorption and reverse saturable absorption. Upon increasing the pump intensity, the third-order nonlinear coefficient decreases from −5.85 × 102 cm GW−1 to −7.89 × 10−10 cm GW−1, while the fifth-order nonlinear coefficient increases from 3.08 × 10−9 cm3 GW−2 to 15.8 cm3 GW−2. With aluminum-doped ZnO nanocrystals as a Q-switch, a pulsed fiber laser operating at the C band (optical communication band) was constructed. Furthermore, the relatively small temperature fluctuations (7.13 K) of the Q-switch indicate its application prospects in all-optical systems. Investigations on the intrinsic mechanism between high-order nonlinearity and the nonlinear absorption can promote the further development and applications of heavily doped oxide semiconductors in advanced nanophotonics.

Abstract:The third-order optical nonlinear susceptibilities of Bi2O3 nanoparticles coated by a layer of stearic acid in toluene sol and bare in hydrosol were measured by the Z-scan technique. The nonlinear susceptibility of the coated Bi2O3 nanoparticles was found to be two orders of magnitude greater than that of the bulk Bi2O3. For the coated Bi2O3 nanoparticles, the figures of merit related to linear loss and two-photon absorption were determined.

Abstract:Fabrication and performance of ZnS/Ag2S nanocomposites as an optical material for efficient Kerr nonlinearities have been described in this study. The formation and composition of samples were verified using combined techniques such as XRD, FTIR, FESEM, EDS and HRTEM. Spectrophotometer methodologies including UV–Vis DRS and PL spectroscopy were employed to analyze the linear optical characteristics. A red shift towards visible light absorption wavelengths was detected in the band-gap energy of ZnS/Ag2S nanocomposites as compared to the sole ZnS sample. The coupling process between ZnS and Ag2S confirmed a promoted charge-carrier separation at the interface of composite structures, supported by PL results. The nonlinear optical studies were performed using standard single-beam Z-scan technique under a 1064 nm Nd-YVO4 laser with 50 ns pulse width and 10 kHz repetition rate as an excitation source. The composite structure effect resulted in an enhanced Kerr-type optical susceptibility of about 52.9 × 10–6 esu, which was eight orders of magnitude higher than that of ZnS structures (7.1 × 10–6 esu).

Abstract:The Au–Ag core–shell nanorods with asymmetric transverse cross section are synthesized, and their tunable linear and nonlinear optical responses are investigated. After the overgrowth of the asymmetric Ag shell on the Au nanorods, (i) a strong transverse octupole (TO) plasmon resonance at 390 nm is observed; (ii) the nonlinear refractive index γ at the TO resonance wavelength significantly increases from −0.15 × 10–4 to −0.85 × 10–4 cm2/GW, and the γ at the longitudinal dipole (LD) resonance wavelength slightly increases from −0.42 × 10–4 to −0.58 × 10–4 cm2/GW; (iii) but the nonlinear absorption coefficient β induced by the TO resonance is approximately 1 order of magnitude smaller than the one induced by the LD resonance. Consequently, the asymmetric Au–Ag core–shell nanorods at the TO resonance wavelength demonstrate a very large nonlinear refractive index as well as excellent nonlinear figures of merit (W = 4.4 > 1 and T = 0.14 < 1), which satisfy the demands for waveguide all-optical switching.
