Abstract:P-arsanilic acid (p-ASA), as a widely used feed additive, is potentially toxic to aquatic organisms and seriously affects the water environment. Therefore, the development of an intelligent multi-functional material for selective simultaneous detection and removal of p-ASA in water has become a top priority. Here, we report one case of novel nitrogen-rich two-dimensional metal-organic framework, Cu(I)-tpp (Htpp = 1-(4-(tetrazol-5-yl))3(pyrzin-2-yl) pyrazol), which has outstanding fluorescence emission at 655 nm; and nitrogen-rich sites exposed on the surface make it an excellent self-assembly template to induce the formation of heterostructures. According to the target requirements, ZIF-8 is selected to construct the Cu(I)-tpp@ZIF-8 heterostructure by liquid-phase epitaxy ignoring the lattice mismatch problem. And the electronic structure of the Cu(I)-tpp framework is analyzed by electrostatic potential (ESP) to determine the nucleation site of ZIF-8. The prepared Cu(I)-tpp@ZIF8 heterostructure assembles adsorption and fluorescence sensing properties, exhibiting significant adsorption (qmax = 303.0 mg g-1) and fluorescence quenching response (LOD = 0.4 mu gL- 1) for p-ASA. Notably, Cu(I)tpp@ZIF-8 achieves a special response to p-ASA that is different from other organic arsenic acids, especially compared with its isomer (o-ASA) and roxarsone (ROX). As a smart multifunctional material, Cu(I)-tpp@ZIF-8 realizes the specificity in the simultaneous detection and removal of p-ASA, presenting excellent application prospects in water quality monitoring.

Abstract:The adsorption of thiocyanate (SCN-) from water is a challenging and urgent task. In this work, a cationic metal-organic framework [Ag-4, 4'-bipy(+)] [NO3-] (SBN) was successfully synthesized for the highly efficient removal of SCN-. A series of characterization results show that SBN has good hydrolytic stability and thermal stability. SBN shows higher adsorption capacity (174.2 mg g(-1)) for SCN- than any other previous adsorbents. Kinetic study shows that adsorption equilibrium can be achieved within 10 min. SBN has good stability in the range of pH 2-10, and the adsorption capacity is immobile with the change of pH. In addition, SBN has a good selectivity for SCN- in the presence of other ions. The increased concentration of NO3- during the adsorption verified that the mechanism of SBN for SCN- removal is ion exchange, which formed [Ag-4, 4'-bipy(+)] [SCN-] (SBS). The low Gibb's energy (Delta rG(T)) indicates that the ion exchange process is thermodynamically spontaneous. Elution experiments showed that no anions could successfully elute SCN-. This work used a metal-organic framework for the adsorption of SCN- for the first time, revealing a new method for the adsorption and immobilization of SCN- in aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Many environmental pollutants inherently exist in their anionic forms and are therefore highly mobile in natural water systems. Cationic framework materials that can capture those pollutants are highly desirable but scarcely reported. Here we present a mesoporous cationic thorium-based MOF (SCU-8) containing channels with a large inner diameter of 2.2 nm and possessing a high surface area of 1360 m 2 g −1 . The anion-exchange properties of SCU-8 were explored with many anions including small oxo anions like ReO 4 − and Cr 2 O 7 2− as well as anionic organic dyes like methyl blue and the persistent organic pollutant, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Both fast uptake kinetics and great sorption selectivity toward PFOS are observed. The underlying sorption mechanism was probed using quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics simulations. These computational results reveal that PFOS anions are immobilized in SCU-8 by driving forces including electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and van der Waals interactions at different adsorption stages.

Abstract:A 3D porous anionic MOF, {[CH3)(2)NH2][Zn-6(mu(3)-OH)(mu(4)-O)(NSBPDC)(5)(H2O)(2)]center dot DMF center dot 12H(2)O}(n) (Zn-1) (H2NSBPDC = 6-nitro-2,2'-sulfone-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid), has been synthesized and characterized. Zn-1 exhibits a rare 5-connected 'sqp' net and contains large 3D intersecting channels modified with functional groups. Notably, Zn-1 can adsorb cationic dyes selectively and effectively, even for large molecules including Rhodamine B and Crystal Violet. The influences of the constant time and initial concentration of MB on the adsorption capacity of Zn-1 have been studied in detail. Furthermore, the kinetic research indicates that the adsorption of MB matches well with the pseudo second-order model. Abstract:The selective removal and recovery of silver ions from an aqueous solution is necessary, owing to the toxicity, persistency, and recoverable value. Herein, we first reported that silver ions could be selectively removed from an acidic solution by utilizing redox-active covalent organic framework (COF) materials as an adsorbent, resulting in the loading of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with a narrow size distribution onto the framework simultaneously. The redox-active COF not only showed promising performance in adsorbing silver ions but also had a high selectivity at a low pH value. Subsequently, it was found that the N sites of amine groups within the framework took responsibility for the Ag NP generation after the systematic investigation on the redox adsorption mechanism. Furthermore, the recycled Ag@COF materials could be further used as new adsorbents to remove Hg(II) ions from water via NPs as a "bridge", exhibiting ultrahigh atomic utilization (>100%). Accordingly, this work not only provides a novel insight for the use of redox-active COF in the removal of metal ions but also opens a new field for designing of functionalized COF for their potential application in diverse areas.

Abstract:The emerging global water crisis necessitates the development of solid adsorbents for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater. Herein, we develop an anionic sulfonate-functionalized covalent organic framework (COF), termed TpStb-SO 3 Na, by the Schiff-base condensation between 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 4,4′-diaminostilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid (Stb-SO 3 H) under solvothermal conditions in the presence of sodium acetate. Thanks to the dense sulfonate groups in the periodic one-dimensional channels, the negatively charged TpStb-SO 3 Na displayed rapid kinetics (average ∼ 99% uptake in merely 10 min) and ultrahigh adsorption capacities for multiple cationic dyes including methylene blue (MB, 1078 mg g −1 ), crystal violet (CV, 1861 mg g −1 ), malachite green (MG, 5857 mg g −1 ) and janus green B (JGB, 1339 mg g −1 ) at room temperature. Noteworthy, the adsorption capacities of TpStb-SO 3 Na toward CV, MG, and JGB were the record-high values among the documented COFs, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and other benchmark adsorbents. In addition, the adsorption behaviors of MB, CV, MG, and JGB on TpStb-SO 3 Na obeyed the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model. On the contrary, TpStb-SO 3 Na presented low adsorption capacity for anionic dyes like methyl orange (MO) and fluorescein sodium (FS), rendering it a promising sorbent for the separation of cationic and anionic dyes based on charge difference. Furthermore, TpStb-SO 3 Na was easily regenerated and reused for five cycles with no obvious loss in its adsorption performance. This work uncovers the vast potential of anionic COFs for the effective removal of organic dye pollutants in wastewater.

Abstract:Lead ions are highly toxic heavy metal ions and Pb(II) in wastewater threatened seriously human health and environment. Therefore, an effective adsorbent must be developed to remove lead ions from wastewater. In this study, a polycrystalline amidoxime covalent organic framework (DBCC-NHOH) is synthesized by a post-modification method for the elimination of Pb(II) from wastewater. The successful preparation of adsorbent (DBCC-NHOH) is demonstrated by the oxygen appearance in SEM-EDS pattern and conversion of -C≡N to C=N-O and C-N in the FT-IR pattern. DBCC-NHOH is a crystalline porous material and its pore size, specific surface area and pore volume are 3.419 nm, 28.154 m 2 /g and 4.2x10 −8 m 3 /g respectively. The optimum conditions for the adsorption of Pb(II) by DBCC-NHOH are temperature 298 K, time 180 min, and pH 5. The maximum adsorption of DBCC-NHOH was 221.37 mg/g. Kinetic and thermodynamic investigations indicate that adsorption of Pb(II) by DBCC-NHOH is a monolayer chemisorption and exothermic process. Selectivity experiments indicate that DBCC-NHOH can adsorb Pb(II) efficiently and selectively in complex multi-ion systems. In addition, the adsorption percentage of DBCC-NHOH remained up to 83.20 % after five adsorption-desorption experiments. The XPS and FT-IR analyses and DFT results indicated that DBCC-NHOH utilized amidoxime function group to realize the high efficiency of Pb(II) adsorption by electrostatic attraction and chelation.

Abstract:Abstract The removal of arsenic compounds from water is classified as an urgent concern by the World Health Organization, since many of these species are hazardous to human health. However, the conventional water treatments are not able to extract them, which makes the development of new methodologies of arsenic removal noteworthy. The application of metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbents to attend this purpose is very promising, because these materials can be intelligently built for the desired application. In this work, the performance of common subunits usually found in MOFs were individually evaluated for the adsorption of some arsenic species through computer simulations based on density functional theory (DFT). Thus, important information at molecular level was obtained, which can assist the design of an optimized adsorbent. Three factors were identified to strengthen the adsorption: ionic coordinate bond, hydrogen bonds, and cycle formation. Furthermore, the evaluated subunits showed to be proper for the removal of HAsO 2 , once the change in the Gibbs free energy was up to −30.8 kcal mol −1 . The comparison with possible coexistent species showed that Cl − , , and can interfere with adsorptive process depending on the MOF composition and on the arsenic species to be removed from water.

Preparation of a Novel Zn(II)-Imidazole Framework as an Efficient and Regenerative Adsorbent for Pb, Hg, and As Ion Removal From Water

Abstract:An outstanding metal–organic framework sorbent (Zn-MOF) was prepared using Zn<sup>2+</sup> and 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole to eliminate toxic metal ions from water. Zn-MOF was detected via using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Zn-MOF is stable and has a very large surface area. The uptake properties of Zn-MOF were investigated. The maximum uptake capacity of Zn-MOF for Pb, Hg, and As ions was 1097, 32, and 718 mg/g, respectively. This was obtained at pH = 4, 5, and 6, respectively. The adsorption data is in good agreement with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order rate models, indicating that the uptake process of Zn-MOF for toxic metal ions was a single layer uptake on a uniform surface via exchange of valence electrons. Thermodynamics shows that the uptake process is autogenic and endothermic. Zn-MOF can be reused at least 6 times. Mercury and lead strongly coordinated with Zn-MOF. The interaction between arsenic and Zn-MOF is weak chemical coordination and ion exchange. Abstract:Recovery of silver from wastewater is a promising alternative from the economic and environmental perspective. Herein, we present an ultrastable ionic covalent organic framework (COF) as a recyclable adsorbent for Ag(I) recovery. The COF exhibits a large surface area, regular pores, and extremely high chemical stability combined with the confined ionic interface, which makes it an excellent material for silver adsorption with fast adsorption kinetics, excellent selectivity, and high saturated adsorption capacity (up to 349.6 mg/g). The superb uptake performance of the cationic COF is attributed to the in-situ precipitation of AgBr and adsorption as well as the coordination of O atoms on the framework to silver.

Abstract:Arsenic in water environment can present significant threats to human health, and eliminating arsenic pollutants from wastewater is crucial. Based on our previously reported work, this study delved into the adsorption behavior and mechanism of different arsenic contaminants (p-ASA, ROX, As(V), and DMA) on the activated Fe-based metal-organic framework (activated MIL-88A). The results show that activated MIL-88A exhibits exceptional adsorption capabilities toward diverse arsenic pollutants. The adsorption process is endothermic, spontaneous, and viable, and chemical adsorption plays a leading role. The remarkable adsorption capacity of activated MIL-88A to various arsenic pollutants is primarily attributed to coordination, while hydrogen bonding also assumes a significant role in the elimination of p-ASA and ROX. Additionally, we investigated the impact of arsenic molecule shape and size, solution pH, and the existence of specific anions and dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the adsorption of different arsenic pollutants. This study can provide valuable insights for further exploring the selective adsorption of different kinds of arsenic species by Fe-based MOF materials and improving the adsorption efficiency of MOFs.

Abstract:A MOF named [(CH3)NH2] [H2N(CH3)(2)][ZnTNC4A] center dot 4H(2)O (ZnTNC4A) was synthesized by a resorcinol[4]arene functionalized tetracarboxylic acid ligand (TNC4A=2,8,14,20-tetra-1-naphthalene-6,12,18,24-tetramethoxy-4,10,16,22- tetracarboxyl-methoxy-resorin[4]arene). The three-dimensional framework with one-dimensional channels of ZnTNC4A was characterized by elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, UV-vis diffuse reflection spectrum, infrared spectrum and N-2 adsorption analyse. In addition, ZnTNC4A shows the ability of selective adsorption of methylene blue with a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The selective adsorption kinetics of a series of dyes showed that the ion exchanged separation process was related to the size and charge of organic dyes.

Abstract:A three-dimensional water-stable cationic metal-organic framework (MOF) pillared by a neutral ligand and with Ni(II) metal nodes has been synthesized employing a rational design approach. Owing to the ordered arrangement of the uncoordinated tetrahedral sulfate (SO4 (2-) ) ions in the channels, the compound has been employed for aqueous-phase ion-exchange applications. The compound exhibits rapid and colorimetric aqueous-phase capture of environmentally toxic oxoanions (with similar geometries) in a selective manner. This system is the first example of a MOF-based system which absorbs both dichromate (Cr2 O7 (2-) ) and permanganate (MnO4 (-) ) ions, with the latter acting as a model for the radioactive contaminant pertechnetate (TcO4 (-) ).

Abstract:The selenite ion widely exists in water streams and can impose significant impact on human health owing to its high toxicity at higher concentrations. Selective and efficient removal of the selenite ion is a highly desirable and challenging task because of the weak interaction of the selenite ion with general adsorbents. Herein, we report a cationic metal-organic framework (HIT-100) possessing triangular channels with excellent selectivity and reusability for selenite removal from water. The constructed HIT-100 exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 223 mg(-1) and ultrafast removal kinetics of similar to 91 % for the selenite ions within 10 min. An insightful adsorption mechanism was scrutinized and presented through the single-crystal structure of selenite-loaded HIT-100 and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to visualize the ion-capture site for accommodating selenite ion in the framework of HIT-100. Moreover, DFT calculations further shed light on the removal mechanism of selenite by revealing the stronger interactions between the selenite ion and HIT-100. In nutshell, this study provides a comprehensive molecular-level understanding of designing advanced porous materials for removing anionic pollutants from water.

Abstract:137 Cs + is strongly radioactive, and has extremely high environmental mobility. It is thus a highly hazardous pollutant; meanwhile, it is also a useful resource in medical therapy processes. The technology for the adsorption of 137 Cs + from water is of great significance in terms of both environmental remediation and resource recovery. Development of advanced materials with low-cost and high efficiency is critical for the efficient removal of Cs + from water. Herein, an anionic lamellar carbon nitride framework (CN–Na) is constructed, and it exhibits remarkable performance in selective removal of Cs + in water via an ion-exchange mechanism. The adsorption isothermal plots are fitted well with Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm models, and the maximum ion-exchange capacity reaches a high value of 278.20 mg g −1 . Replacement of Na + by Cs + from the CN–Na framework gradually decreases the crystallinity; it is worth noting that the crystalline structure could be restored during the regeneration with Na + . The reversibility of the structure ensures a remarkable durability of the ion-exchange materials, as verified by a long-term test of 450 h in an ion-exchange column. The work herein sheds light on the potential application of CN frameworks as a platform to realize efficient and cost-effective Cs + removal.

Spiroborate-Based Three Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework for Effective Adsorption and Separation of Organic Dyes

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are undergoing a period of rapid development of novel structures and diverse functions. Ionic COFs have been applied in environmental engineering due to their porous, robust and charged skeleton, making it necessary to expand the family of ionic frameworks. Based on an in-situ functionalization strategy, we report a new 3D anionic COF constructed by the linker 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP), linkage spiroborate (SPB) and counter cation [n-Bu2NH2]+ (DBA). Anionic spiroborate centers are distributed in a 4-fold interpenetrated network of srs topology, constituting a stable crystalline structure. The framework has been used for adsorption of charged dyes and present rapid cationic dyes removal(over 99 % within 10 min), effective adsorption capacities for methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), and malachite green (MG) (maximum values of 892 mg g-1, 1632 mg g-1 and 457 mg g-1, respectively), impressive molecular sieving selectivity (little absorption of anionic dyes) and good recycle performance (no removal loss for at least 5 cycles). In addition, the adsorption behaviors of isotherm and kinetic are discussed. This study not only reveals a new strategy for constructing ionic 3D COFs, but also contributes to their development for environmental engineering related applications.
