Abstract:We report a comparative study of two silica-based ionogel electrolytes for electrochemical cycling applications. The ionogels considered represent two classes of gel networks, a covalently formed network generated by the polymerization of tetramethoxysilane catalyzed by formic acid, and a network formed by weak intermolecular forces obtained by mixing fumed silica nanopowder with ionic liquid. In both cases, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide is utilized as the ion conductor in the gel network. With increasing temperature it is shown that the electrochemical stability window is reduced, the conductivity of the electrolyte is increased, and the double layer capacitance is increased for both types of ionogels. Long-term stability of the two ionogels is excellent, with 90% capacitance retained after 10,000 repetitive CV cycles at 100 degrees C. Our results indicate that both of these ionogel electrolytes are promising for application in solid-state electrochemical systems at high temperature. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Ultra‐Tough and Recyclable Ionogels Constructed by Coordinated Supramolecular Solvents

Abstract:AbstractThe mechanical properties of most hydrogels (ionogels) are considerably affected by covalently cross‐linked networks. However, the interactions between solvent/solvent molecules and solvent/polymer chains are usually ignored. Herein, a series of ultra‐tough ionogels were prepared via a supramolecular solvent, halometallate ionic liquid, in which cations and coordinating anions form a 3D supramolecular network. The linear polymer chains are physically cross‐linked with supramolecular solvents synergistically enhancing the strength (14.3 MPa), toughness (78 MJ m−3), and Young's modulus (55 MPa) of ionogels, effectively dispersing the stress concentration under load, and obtaining better fatigue resistance and higher fracture energy (198 kJ m−2). Furthermore, the reversible cross‐linking enables green recovery and recycling of ionogels, simply by water. This strategy shows broad applicability based on a variety of supramolecular solvents and coordinatable polymers.
High-performance Double-Network Ionogels Enabled by Electrostatic Interaction

Abstract:Production of highly conductive and mechanically robust ionogels is urgently needed for the development of diverse flexible electrical devices, but it remains challenging. Herein, we report a facile strategy to prepare high-performance ionogels (ionic conductivity of 1.9 S m-1, fracture strain of 170%) via electrostatic interaction between mechanically robust charged gel double networks and conductive ionic liquids. Ionogels based on charged polymer networks (with electrostatic interaction) exhibit obvious higher optical transmittance, ionic conductivity, and better mechanical properties compared with those based on neutral polymer networks (without electrostatic interaction). Ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of the ionogels can also be regulated by the double-network structure of the gels. We further develop an ionic skin sensor with the high-performance ionogels used as ionic conductors, which can exhibit excellent sensing performance even under harsh conditions. We envision that this new class of high-performance ionogels would be an attractive alternative to traditional hydrogels, and would extend the applications of ionic conductors to extreme environments.

Abstract:Common natural and synthetic high‐strength materials (such as rubber, plastics, ceramics, and metals) undergo the occurrence of poor deformability. Achieving high strength and large deformation simultaneously is a huge challenge. Herein, we developed high‐strength ionogels through the synergy of force‐induced crystallization and halometallate ionic liquid created supramolecular ionic networks. The prepared polyvinyl alcohol/halometallate ionic liquid ionogels show the excellent mechanical properties, including ultimate fracture stress (63.1 ± 2.1 MPa), strain (5248 ± 113%), and unprecedented toughness (1947 ± 52 MJ m−3) which is much higher than that of most metals and alloys. Furthermore, the ionogels can achieve reversibility by water to realize green recovery and restoration of damaged mechanical properties. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:A strong and tough ion‐gel is developed. Specifically, polyacrylamide (PAM) is inserted into cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs) clusters by in‐situ polymerization, constructing hydrogel with micro/nanoscale entangled networks. Then the metal halide ionic liquid ([BMIm]ZnxCly) replaces the water in the hydrogel, forming an ion hybrid network with supramolecular interactions. Such collaborative mechanisms of micro‐nano scale entanglement network and ion hybridization are strategically used to address the challenges posed by the balance of strength and toughness. Ion‐gels, with inherent flexibility, tunable conductivity, and multi‐stimulus response, have attracted significant attention in flexible/wearable electronics. However, the design of ion‐gels that exhibit both strength and toughness is challenging. In this study, a novel ion‐gel design is proposed that mimics the hierarchical meshing structure of leaves in combination with ion hybridization. Polyacrylamide (PAM) is incorporated in TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs) clusters by in situ polymerization, generating a hydrogel with micro/nanoscale entangled networks. Replacement of water by a metal halide ionic liquid ([BMIm]ZnxCly) in the hydrogel resulted in the formation of an ion hybrid network with supramolecular interactions. The integration of the PAM/TOCNF polymer network with [BMIm]ZnxCly resulted in ion‐gels with high strength (5.9 MPa), toughness (22 MJ m−3), and enhanced elastic modulus (30 MPa) combined with non‐flammability, heat and cold resistance. While having fast responsiveness (36 ms) of sensing signal and stability of power supply even at 4000 cycle collisions. Stable signal output even at high (200 °C) /sub‐zero temperatures. The proposed strategy offers a new approach to the material design of flexible/wearable electronics.

Abstract:We report the fabrication, structure, and heteropolyanion structure effect of polyoxometalate (POM)/ionic liquid (IL) supramolecular gels. These supramolecular gels exhibit ordered structures, as a result of their excellent reversible self-assembly, and they show various physicochemical properties, determined by the heteropolyanion structure effect of POM anions. Specifically, the formation of POM/IL supramolecular gels results in a highly ordered layer-shape structure, which has been calculated using X-ray powder diffraction patterns and proven by transmission electron microscopy images for the first time. When these POM/IL supramolecular gels are heated, they become viscous liquid sols, with melting isotropic drops and even flowerlike structures on microscopic scales, while it undergoes a reversible gel-sol phase transformation from gel to sol. The heteropolyanion structure effect in these two IL gels, [TBTP](5)PW10V2O40 and [TBTP](8)P2W16V2O62, on their physicochemical properties is demonstrated. The POM structures have a strong structure effect on the physicochemical properties. As the size of heteropolyanions increases, there is a significant improvement in the conductivity, thermal performance, and oxidizability, with a lower phase inversion temperature, which means that the Dawson-type compound, [TBTP](8)P2W16V2O62, has a higher conductivity, lower melting point, stronger oxidizability, and better thermal performance than the Keggin-type compound, [TBTP](5)PW10V2O40, under the same conditions.

Abstract:Novel bionanocomposite ionogels consisting of an ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIMAc), microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and nano-silica (nano-SiO2) particles with high tensile strength and high ionic conductivity have been successfully prepared. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements reveal a homogeneous dispersion of nano-SiO2 in the MCC/nano-SiO2/EMIMAc bionanocomposite ionogels. In order to clarify the influences of added nano-SiO2 on the sol–gel transition process and liquid crystalline phase transition for the MCC/nano-SiO2/EMIMAc systems, the complexes were investigated by dynamic rheological measurements, mechanical tensile property tests and polarized optical microscope (POM) observations. The rheological results indicate that the introduction of nano-SiO2 can induce and accelerate the gelation for the MCC/nano-SiO2/EMIMAc solutions. By adjusting the MCC and nano-SiO2 concentrations, the gel-sol transition temperature and elastic modulus can be well controlled and the optimized values reach 125 °C and 7 × 105 Pa, respectively. The POM results reveal that the addition of nano-SiO2 significantly suppresses the liquid crystalline behavior of ionogels. A more significant result is that the bionanocomposite ionogels exhibit high ionic conductivity in the order of 10−3 S cm−1 at 30 °C. The ionic conductivity of the ionogels increases with increasing temperature and decreasing MCC concentration. The above results demonstrate that the novel bionanocomposite ionogels with high tensile strength are promising for the application as gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) in electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Binary ionic liquids are used to prepare two thermostable and highly conductive gel electrolytes (A and B). Quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells using these electrolytes show high power conversion efficiencies of up to 5.8 % at 20 °C and work well over a wide temperature range (20–80 °C), as shown by plots of photocurrent density versus voltage (see picture), and remain in the gel state even at 80 °C (inset).

Abstract:A network‐structured supramolecular gel is constructed through host‐guest interactions between conjugated ligands and metal ions, leading to enhanced mechanical properties and excellent electrical conductivity. This overcomes the problem of insufficient conductance due to the presence of solvent in the interstitial region of the supramolecular gel. Supramolecular gels can undergo reversible sol‐gel transitions by controlling the pH or temperature of the system. In addition, a method has been developed to determine the specific binding ratio of host‐guest molecules by conductivity tests, and has been used to verify the specific binding ratio of crown ether to potassium ions. To explain the high conductivity of supramolecular metallic gels, DFT and SEM have been employed to elucidate their conductivity mechanism.

Abstract:De quervain disease, or stenosing tenosynovitis of the first dorsal compartment of the wrist, is a common wrist pathology. Pain results from resisted gliding of the abductor pollicis longus and the extensor pollicis brevis tendons in the fibro-osseus canal. de Quervain tenosynovitis of the wrist is more common in women than men. Diagnosis may be made on physical examination. Radiographs are helpful in ruling out offending bony pathology. Nonsurgical management, consisting of corticosteroid injections and supportive thumb spica splinting, is usually successful. In resistant cases, surgical release of the first dorsal compartment is done, taking care to protect the radial sensory nerve and identify all accessory compartments. Repair of the extensor retinaculum by step-cut lengthening or other techniques is rarely required.

Abstract:Ionogels for lithium metal batteries are usually obtained by immobilization of lithium salt-containing ionic liquids using linear polymers as gelator, which are thermally unstable and lack of adhesion. Meanwhile, the two-cation (ionic liquid cation and lithium ion) competition results in low lithium-ion transference number. In this work, we designed novel ionogels by in situ UV radiation-induced chemically crosslinked polymerization of butyl acrylate in a solvate ionic liquid ([Li(G4)][TFSI]) without additional lithium salt. The obtained ionogels (IG-m/n, m/n is the weight ratio between butyl acrylate and solvate ionic liquid) exhibit nonflammability, favorable thermal and mechanical features, high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, and interestingly adhesive ability that provides an intimate contact with the Li anode. Consequently, one of the ionogels, IG-1/2, owing to its optimized adhesion, ionic conductivity, and mechanical property, could endow the as-fabricated Li|IG-1/2|LiFePO4 cells with high cyclability and Coulombic efficiency at room temperature, 90 °C, and 150 °C.

Abstract:Moisture-sensitive gels with recyclable and switchable mechanics hold great promise for electronic generation. However, the volume, mechanical, electrical stability of gels during repeated hydration-dehydration remain a big challenge. In this study, we have developed a high-strength ionogel by incorporating a polyacrylic acid (PAA) network with multiple hydrogen bonds into the polyzwitterion-ionic liquid (PVBIPS-VEIMBF 4 ) network. The resulting ionogel exhibits an exceptional breaking strength of 67 MPa and significant water-induced softening (2600-fold modulus decrease) with the elongation of approximately 708%. Moreover, it remains stable over 7 rehydration processes without volume deformation, simultaneously exhibits excellent water/heat induced shape memory behavior. Additionally, due to the protonation ability of polyelectrolytes and the exceptional hydration ability of zwitterions, a single gel-based MEG can consistently produce a high voltage of 1.17 V at 85% outdoor humidity. With diverse applications in different states, this excellent ionogel demonstrates enormous potential for sustainable development of green materials.

Abstract:Monolithic ionogel electrolyte membranes (IGEMs) based on gelling scaffolds and ionic liquids have aroused intensive interest because of their broad processing compatibility, nonflammability, and favorable thermal and electrochemical features. However, the absence of functional scaffolds that concurrently enable high mechanical strength and Li+ transportability of IGEMs constrains the battery power and safety. Herein, a task‐specific IGEM monolith featuring high Li+ conductivity and outstanding thermal stability is demonstrated, whereby electrospun positively charged poly(ionic liquid) nanofibers serve as a thermotolerant scaffold for the IGEM. Regulating the Li+ environment in the IGEM enables the shift from the sluggish vehicular to fast structural Li‐ion transport mode. With the unique IGEM, the solid‐state Li||LiFePO4 cells achieve improved rate capability and good cyclability in a wide temperature range from 0 to 90 °C. Furthermore, practical solid‐state Li||LiFePO4 pouch cells with a cathode capacity of ≈2 mAh cm−2 have also been demonstrated. Regulating the Li+ environment via task‐specific scaffolds enables ionogel electrolytes with fast structural Li+ mobility. An unusual monolithic ionogel electrolyte membrane (IGEM) based on poly(ionic liquid) nanofibers with a high Li‐ion transference number is demonstrated. Practical solid‐state Li|IGEM|LiFePO4 cells achieve outstanding rate capability in a wide temperature range from 0 to 90 °C.

Abstract:Conductive ionogels with high processability and mechanical robustness are fabricated by self‐assembly of a triblock copolymer, PS‐PEO‐PS, in mixed ionic liquids, [VBBIm]NTf2, and [EMIm]NTf2, and subsequent in situ chemical cross‐linking of [VBBIm]NTf2. This fabrication route is compatible with inkjet printing, spray coating and 3D printing, which will broaden the applications of ionogels. Currently, the increasing needs of conductive ionogels with intricate shapes and high processability by individual requirements of next‐generation flexible electronics constitute significant challenges. Here, the design of highly processable ionogels is reported with mechanical robustness by self‐assembly of a common triblock copolymer into a precursor in functional mixed ionic liquids (ILs) containing conductivity‐enhancing and polymerizable strength‐enhancing components. The subsequent in situ polymerization of the precursor forms physical‐co‐chemical cross‐linked networks, in which the entanglement between physical and chemical cross‐linked networks and microphase separation give rise to mechanical robustness of as‐fabricated ionogel. The viscosity of the self‐assembled precursor can be rationally tuned, which makes the fabrication process compatible with diverse technologies including inkjet printing, spray coating, and 3D printing. By virtue of highly processable capability of the designed ionogels, an auxetic‐structured ionogel can be easily generated using 3D printing, which exhibits greatly improved sensitivity and thus is able to monitor tiny deformations. This study that relies on designing functional mixed ILs as the dispersion phase rather than focusing on synthesizing new‐type polymers establishes a new route for versatile and programmable fabrication of high‐performance ionogels for broader applications.

Abstract:Modern electrochemical and electronic devices require advanced electrolytes. Liquid crystals have emerged as promising electrolyte candidates due to their good fluidity and long-range order. However, the mesophase of liquid crystals is variable upon heating, which limits their applications as high-temperature electrolytes, e.g., implementing anhydrous proton conduction above 100 °C. Here, we report a highly stable thermotropic liquid-crystalline electrolyte based on the electrostatic self-assembly of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters and zwitterionic polymer ligands. These electrolytes can form a well-ordered mesophase with sub-10 nm POM-based columnar domains, attributed to the dynamic rearrangement of polymer ligands on POM surfaces. Notably, POMs can serve as both electrostatic cross-linkers and high proton conductors, which enable the columnar domains to be high-temperature-stable channels for anhydrous proton conduction. These nanochannels can maintain constant columnar structures in a wide temperature range from 90 to 160 °C. This work demonstrates the unique role of POMs in developing high-performance liquid-crystalline electrolytes, which can provide a new route to design advanced ion transport systems for energy and electronic applications.

Abstract:Flexible electrolytes with solid self‐supporting properties are highly desired in the fields of energy and electronics. However, traditional flexible electrolytes prepared by doping ionic liquids or salt solutions into a polymer matrix pose a risk of liquid component leakage during device operation. In this work, we report the development of supramolecular ionic network electrolytes using polyoxometalate nanoclusters as supramolecular crosslinkers to solidify bola‐type zwitterionic liquids. The resulting self‐supporting electrolytes possess semi‐solid features and show a high proton conductivity of 8.2×10−4 S cm−1 at low humidity (RH = 30%). Additionally, the electrolytes exhibit a typical plateau region in rheological tests, indicating that their dynamic network structures can contribute mechanical behavior similar to the entangled networks in covalent polymer materials. This work introduces a new paradigm for designing flexible solid electrolytes and expands the concept of reticular chemistry to noncrystalline systems. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Flexible and conductive gels are promising materials as intelligent and wearable electronics.
